Thanks so much for the video and your unique perspective! But how can you unlearn to use your support as a singer with 10 years of classical singing experience transitioning into a metalhead? 😂

As someone with 10 years of theatre support under my belt before I started unlearning it, I can confirm it is possible. It will take a bit of time. I found it useful to do negative practice (so if you're used to moving the core inwards, actively move it outwards and vice versa). I'd also recommend never singing until the end of your breath for now because your body will go on autopilot. And I spent a lot of time singing individual pitches very slowly, making sure nothing was moving much and increasing the volume slowly... (I noticed that I would sometimes support before phonation started, so I had to stop that first)

Wow really interesting discussion, actually explains a lot! My puppy also watched a bit, his favourite part was the zzzZZZzzzZZZzzz noises 😅 (but now he's zzzZZZ as in asleep! 😴)

Thanks. I would like to know how to switch between growl and belting clean. I am specifically asking for the techinque used on the song called Handshake with hell from arch enemy. Cheers

Specifically for that song, the clean singing is going to be louder than the growl and it's also going to use a lot more air. It isn't that the clean singing needs a lot of air, but rather that the growl in that song is being done on a very low airflow, much closer to conversational/rapping than singing/belting. Don't waste time singing the song. Simple pick one line you can go easily, growl it and then jump straight into cleans. Switching from growls to cleans is just a matter of practice and balance.

Hi Aliki! As always, great video. Plowing through numerous videos of hyperactive folk claiming yet again that I've been doing something wrong all my life while stating that DIAPHRAGM is the key that opens all doors can become somewhat exhausting, so I thoroughly enjoy your calm narrative. On the topic of supporting, playing around I found out that a concious effort to support would often result in producing more volume and clarity, while noticeably limiting agility in navigating between the notes in the vocal range. Would that mean that more work is required to separate the mechanics of supporting from those associated with modulation?

It could mean many different things. It could mean that there is a bit too much support and it's limiting the agility of the body, it could be that there isn't isolation of different aspects of phonation (although, again, how isolated can any single body part or muscle truly be?). I would play around between supporting, and then intentionally speaking with more volume. If your body happens to support, that's interesting, but if it doesn't need to, maybe it doesn't need to... experiment!

    Hello Aliki! Hello everyone!🙌🏻
Thanks for the very interesting video on the topic!
Since I never had classical singing lessons, I didn't know that you could (also) make such a big difference with the so-called appoggio.
My singing teachers never taught me that I "shouldn't" use the support. Is it possible that this is not relevant to my voice? 🤔 I don't have a very loud voice.
Or is it simply because I never had classical singing lessons?
Thank you in advance for your assessment! ✨🙏🏻✨

Hi! My guess would be it's because of never having classical singing lessons :) If you're not looking to sing classically, or in a theatrical context, "supporting" is not very important. Most singing teachers are too scared to tell students not to support - there used to be an old belief system that support is necessary and that it makes singing "healthy", which is not true.

I used to think think that I didn't know how to support, but after watching the video and trying out the things you said, it now seems like I even use support when I speak. I was never a theatre kid but I did used to have asthma and really low lung capacity pre puberty, maybe that's where this came from but I'm not sure.
Now I'm confused about what to do. Should I try and do everything with and without support. I do have to do that negative thing to not support, which you recommended the other commenter who was classically trained, to not support as I'm always doing it by default.
I already feel like I can fry at a bit more volume then before but i may just tripping. Also the reason I started trying to learn harsh vocals was because my voice couldn't make any sort of distortion even if i tried. Even when i used to try to be very loud like other kids, there never used to be any distortion, just my throat hurting after some point..
I wanted to ask you what to even expect or practice as someone which this experience in life? Any specific area you think i should definitely explore if I had never really sang without support much at all ?

    • @AlikiKatriou

I always experiment with and without support, and I would recommend it. Even if it's just to keep the body agile and responsive, rather than "frozen" in one behavioural pattern. I can definitely get fry louder without support than with XD
It's difficult to guess what to expect or practice. With singing, I'd say "expect the unexpected!" and that is usually what happens. I would probably spend time on single pitches, increasing and decreasing the volume. It's always good for the vocal folds and the entire system. For distortions, experiment with various volumes. Different bodies prefer different volumes, so keep an open mind as to whether something is "too loud" or "too quiet" - it might just work!

    Hy Aliki.Thank you.
A question: I can't make false cord without support (hurts), you don't use it?

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  2 місяці тому +1

Hi Mariana :) No, I don't use support for my false vocal folds, I find it doesn't give my desired degree of control. Here's the magical question for you: can you engage your false vocal folds with support, and then sustain the sound (think for 2-3 beats) whilst disengaging the support?
