Rescuing a baby flying-fox on the ground: this is Déjà Vu

- Déjà Vu is the first rescued baby in Sydney this season, fully 3 weeks earlier than the babies usually come in. It was called in as a microbat, but I phoned the MOP (member of public) to ask the size, and he sent me a pic so the baby flying-fox, the first of the season, was all mine.
She's a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox. I named her Déjà Vu because I had a strong sense of Déjà Vu about heading into my 15th baby season.
Given that everything has been dying for so long, I decided to wait a few days before announcing her rescue. It's 10 days later now, and she's doing really well - I have moved her along to another carer but don't worry - I have some videos of her with Maggie and being a baby with me for a while. She's a total delight with a strong suck and coordinated sucking and swallowing. She just needs to be slowed down a bit otherwise she guzzles it and regurgitates.
She doesn't appear to have any injuries at all.

I can understand your trepidation after last baby season, but I feel like this one will be different, and she is proof of that. Yay!
My heart always aches when they're first rescued and crying for mom. Not to mention how insanely adorable and helpless they are. In the end I'm always happy with the positive outcome of having another chance to grow up and be a proper bat. They're in damn good hands with you all who care for them. I am grateful to you for your dedication to these beautiful creatures

Glad to hear she's been doing so well, and glad those guys found her so quickly! I just cannot imagine how disoriented and frightened she was, having that kind of adventure after only three days. I know she's in good hands with Meg and Maggie now 🦇

How adorable. Just love/hate to see the babies, love, because they are so cute, but hate because they really are better off being raised by mom I would think. But thankfully she was found in time and here's praying that her survival bodes well for the rest of baby season.

So tiny! I suppose the enormous bucket and three towels are necessary to protect such a tiny creature! Still very kind of the MOP to think of it.
It protected her from roaming cats, predatory birds and the direct sunlight and overheating, even though it was a cooler day. MOPs always think the bat needs to be protected from sunlight.

She's so tiny and beautiful. Babies are a lot of work, but worth the trouble. Since she was the first baby of the season, I was half expecting to see Maggie kicking in your door to get to Deja. Glad to her the baby made it.

Déjà vu is a beautiful little baby girl! And of course, I fell in love with her at first sight. This was an inspiring video to watch, and you were being so candid in the beginning as you were driving to her that I was greatly moved even before I laid eyes on her beautiful little self!

What a blast from the past! Between 30-40 years ago, I lived in Salisbury Rd, Liberty St, Trafalgar St and Alice St near the Golden Sheaf. You must have driven on or past all of those on this trip. Good result with the bat.

Aw! I think this is the youngest battie rescue I've seen, I think I started watching later into the baby season when they were more grown up... So great to have a survivor!!!
There are the occasional premmies as well which come into care. They're hard work.

One hopes so. The first 3 babies of the season have survived, 2 of them were my rescues. As we speak I have baby 2 quietly sucking away at her bottle.

Joanne Apple I agree with you totally. Although it is difficult and sometimes I even cry, if Meg can LIVE IT, and through it, which is far more intense, then I can put myself through it by watching it!
I will no longer avoid the harsher and sometimes grim realities of these videos!

We all feel this. For me, it's baby grey squirrels and lately (with warmer winters) they don't seem to stop coming. Winter used to be a break, but the weather keeps changing and storms ensure these tree babies keep falling year-round. Hugs for you, we know exactly how you feel.
Yes, this year the babies started coming in earlier, and they were larger/older when they should have been tiny babies.
My personal nightmare would be to have to run a creche all year round to release these babies. We don't have the person power to staff a release creche and chop all the fruit for them daily and do all the weekly catch up and checks. It's a huge job, and to run it year round would be a total nightmare.

I'm sitting here with happy tears and the biggest dumb grin, I can't begin to imagine what a delight it's got to be for you to have a little survivor after all the death you've had this past year. Seems like the MoPs were very lovely people as well and quite interested rather than scared or repulsed by bats. ❤️ Fingers crossed and wishing you a baby season that's not *too* insane so you can really enjoy the little ones!
