You ignored that Barbara Walters gave Dolly the opportunity to respond to the ugly jokes that were being made about her. That was the purpose of this interview. I suspect that you are attracted to Trump and fascism and this is your mini campaign against journalism.
Walters was so rude. I love Dolly- forever an optimist, smart, funny, talented beyond measure and a giver. Where is the original clip of this interview you said would be posted, please?
Amazing how Dolly handled such disrespectful and manipulative questions with unshakable poise and charm. She is a ninja in this interview. What an incredible human.
Barbara couldn't get out of her East Coast snob mode. She clearly didn't understand Dolly and consequently asked a lot of aggressively condescending questions. If it were me, I'd have walked away from the interview, but Dolly had the poise and dignity to rise above the cheap shots.
When I was working at The Stampede there in Branson: you *always* knew when she was there. Didn’t happen often, & nobody got crappy like you sometimes hear about when the boss comes- because I will tell you, I am certain Dolly would never have that. I was so young at the time but, the thing that stuck with me was it’s not just how she speaks. When she walks into a room, you know. You would have thought she was 10 feet tall: but we were both the shortest people in the room. I decided then & there that’s how I was going to be, too- just so unapologetically yourself.
The strong eye contact when she says “i like myself, I like who I am” was the kill shot in this interview. It exudes honesty and begs the question: do you like who you are?
It’s amazing also because how many times do we hear that from anyone, let alone someone in entertainment? Never! “Low self esteem” is the thing now. “I like who I am” “I’m sure of my talent” “I’m good where it counts, inside”. Spoken without a speck of haughtiness. Wow. What a well rounded person she is.
@@skippy9659 helped charities is an understatement. Around 2016 we had wildfires here in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina that devastated the area. Dolly stepped up and donated $1,000/month for six months to 900 displaced families, regardless of their income. So much money had been donated to her foundation during that time that they paid $5,000 the final month. On top of that, they went case by case and kicked in extra where needed based on the financial hardships various individuals were faced with and helped with cleanup of some of the properties. In all, I believe they said she donated $12.5 million. Perhaps the most touching, and to me telling detail about what type of a person she is, is when she made an official statement about the donations she stated that her managers of her businesses and theme parks were the ones making these donations, not her. She gave them credit for it even though it was her money. She’s an amazing person to say the least.
I love watching Barbra Walters’ face when she realizes she has been schooled and exposed as inferior by a ‘hillbilly’. ‘Yeah, I thought that’s what ya meant’ was my favorite line from Dolly. She’s pointing out how she wouldn’t be surprised at Walters’ low minded questions
Yep, she's talked about how businessmen underestimate her, and she's got something on all of them (not sure if it's this interview or 60 Minutes Australia I've just watched, one of the two. And Barbara fell into that trap...she's a very smart lady, and the image is misleading. Not malicious, but I think she enjoys how she looks but alos uses the fact that people think 'dumb blonde' when she very much is not.
“They weren’t very educated but they were very intelligent” I teared up when she said that. What a beautiful quote and something that more people need to understand.
I live on the other side of the world as an engineer, but when I visit my family back in the US coal mining country, their pragmatic intelligence often astounds me.
Actually Dolly smacked the living sh*t out of Walters, she talked about class and intelligence, while looking Walters straight in the face. Dolly is a treasure.
Dolly's body posture is incredible. She is at ease and leaning in with respect and interest. Without an ounce of meanness. She is a person who causes others expose their ugliness in her presence.
I'm 50+ yr old lady who met Dolly at a Woolworth in Mobile Alabama when I was a 5 yr old. I had saved up my allowance to buy her Jolene album, stand in line and get her to sign it. I was a very "hillbilly" little kid that cried and was petrified to stand in front of her to just ask for her signature. She treated me like a little princess and my parents had never been that kind to me. I have never forgotten it. She will always be the picture of "Class" to me. ❤️
I saw her in Greenville SC when I was 5 or 6 and I was mesmerized. She was larger than life. I shyly stood there with my mouth gaped open, and she came over, sat down on her heels and asked my name, and how I liked the show. All I could do was smile like a clown, couldnt even speak!! lol
@@csutton161 I understand. She was so pretty in person and so very sweet to me. I couldn't help but cry. She just held me close and said "it's alright honey". I don't think I said more than I bought your album with my allowance. She signed it with a big heart. It meant the world to me. I haven't ever asked for or wanted another autograph.
Well said! I didn't really know much about her until I moved to Nashville when I was 13, which was about 50 years ago. Was a tour guide at the Grand Ole Opry in college and met her a few times as well as some others and she was one of the very nicest people I've ever met in any walk of life. And interestingly, my great-niece who was only 23 and lives in New York City is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a performance artist and she loved Dolly! And she loved Porter Wagoner as well! So yes, she transcends generations and regions of the country and appeals to many people from all areas.
I recorded Dolly back in 2004. She's the most down to earth and completely professional person you will ever meet. She showed up an hour early for the 8:00am. session completely "Dolled up"and even apologized for being early and then offered to get me a cup of coffee. She is top class.
Saw an old pal t'other day. He worked for a company that did the load ins and outs for big concerts here in Liverpool /uk. A thankless task. At the Dolly date in 2011 he told me he and the lads were standing around on a break when suddenly they noticed this blond woman tottering over towards them. "Just want to thank you boys and let you know I appreciate the job you do" Dolly Parton ~ class act.
I grew up in East Tennessee near where Dolly is from. She has done more for her community than any politician can possibly imagine- she has brought jobs and prosperity, but more important, shes given east Tennessee something to be very proud of. She is a queen to us, and reading these comments it makes me happy that the rest of the world sees it too. Dolly forever!
I’ve been to Tennessee and I must say, she truly is a queen to y’all 🥰. I said, Lawd, it’s like she’s JC out here 😂🥰. How wonderful for Dolly to be so loved by your hometown and at the same time, she loved that it’s where she came from.
In the movie “finding forester” “those that are not your blood , can become your blood” . Dolly’s love has often become part of the life-blood of SO many people that she has met and influenced along the way . “Above all Love one another “ -Jesus
Master class in Southern charm. Her first answer about having Country class was a sweet but direct contrast to Barbara's utter classlessness. Her comment about how creating her own look takes a lot more thought than simply following fashion was a knock on fashionable people. Finally, emphasizing how much she likes who she is seemed to say, do you like who you are, Barbara? Bravo Miss Dolly!
I heard that, as well. Dolly had been looking at BW the whole time, no doubt reading her like a book. She was sweetly contrasting her self esteem with BW’s lack thereof very pointedly. Finest girl-fight ever. Most wholesome use of passive aggression ever. Brilliant woman.
It is now decades later, and Walters is probably still applying dressings to all the burns Dolly landed on her in this interview without her even knowing it.
The View that Barbara Walters started like 25 years ago, Those women on there now, need to watch this interview. They could learn a lesson in how to behave like a LADY, from Dolly!
I think body language was a huge part of this interview as well. Dolly exuded confidence, leaning in to the interview, holding eye contact, a non-stop smile, and never once having to think about her answers. Baba Wawa just seemed like a petty, jealous, old hag who just had her ass handed to her in the prettiest, sweetest Southern accent.
"Hag?" How about we not demean women by using slurs? There is no time in a woman's life where society doesn't express extreme hatred for them. Do better.
I sort of met Dolly years ago while laying over at an airport in Tennessee. I saw her walking with her high-high heels on and two young teenage boys ran over to her to give her a hug and she was so sweet and kind and smiled at all of us and hugged those two boys! She was and IS a class act!!! She treats people with kindness and respect and I have a lot of respect for her!!
I'd rather spend my time with "Dolly's People " than "Barbara's People " any day. Dolly has always been a LADY. She has compassion for others and obviously she's always been talented as a writer and singer. Definitely a class act!
@@mariantreber8055 I don't think so. Dolly is a class act. However, Walters details are the ones that will shake out...and no one will be surprised. This interview exposed her true colors.
Dolly is and always has been a very intelligent woman and she always handles herself perfectly in interviews. *It's a common attitude to underestimate people who are born in the south and/or born into poor families. We are stereotyped...just as Walters tried to do here with Dolly.* But instead, Walters came off as rude and insulting. *Great job Dolly!*
As a southern woman, I totally agree. Southerners are often viewed by non-southerners as ignorant and classless people and that simply isn't true. Sure, there are some who are ignorant and classless. But there are ignorant and classless people all over the world. Not just in the south. Most southerners aren't though. Dolly is a prime example of that.
I think Dolly was wearing what she was wearing to play around with the stereotypes. She was ironic and hipster before those words and ideas even existed.
Dolly Parton was about 32 years old here in 1977. For someone with minimal education she gave the most impressive answers to Barbara Walters. Even if the top public relationship firm were given these questions in advance they could not have answered them more eloquently than Dolly. Wow!
Every single time I hear her sing coat of many colors I get choked up, nothing Barbara Walter's has ever said has moved me like that. Much less 40 years later.
True! Here Barbara looks like a malicious passive-aggressive older aunt, full of envy and stinging remarks. I admire Dolly's class, and I'd like to think I would have been equally poised if I was in her place, but I know I couldn't. I'd probably snap at Barbara.
What an amazing example of how classy Dolly Parton is, and highly intelligent too because she had Walters number from the start and effortlessly dealt with her ridiculous questioning. I’ve loved Dolly since I was a little girl, partly because I always felt she was so true to herself and despite such talent seemed down to earth and honest, and decent. She hasn’t changed from that, still the same gifted and beautiful soul.
One thing that I’ve always noticed about Dolly is that she has this Aw-shucks grin on her face, but there’s enough power, intelligence, beauty and confidence behind it that throws people off. She seems to enjoy herself when she dodges these questions, she has a quick wit and it appears that she’s really having fun.
Well, she knew how to get attention. Thankfully, enough people over the years have hung around for a few extra minutes to learn that she has more substance than most people do beneath the flashy exterior.
I had the good fortune to see Dolly perform to a small, intimate group of about 30 people. It was just her sitting on a stool with her acoustic guitar sinIging, chatting and telling stories and jokes. It's one of my most cherished memories. Two of the funniest things she said I'll never forget. One was, "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap" and the other was "I can't believe how windy it was in Tampa today. When I got off of the plane the wind blew my hair all over the place. I had to chase it half way down the runway before I caught up with it!" And Barbara thought she would insult Dolly by asking if she worried that people think she's a joke. Underestimate Dolly at your own peril. She is the queen of the, "Well, bless your heart" technique.
"She is the queen of the, "Well, bless your heart" technique." I never even knew what that was for the longest time - but if I ever needed a definition, this interview would be that :) Thanks for the chuckle, Markus.
Dolly Parton is the epitome of smart, Southern females steeped in elegant manners since babyhood and well versed in techniques of NOT being catty. She cannot be snubbed (relegated to inferior status) by anyone.
Maybe I'm just not as soft as most. Walters asked questions, that "everybody" wanted to know about. I really don't see them as insults. And - just like with Jordan Peterson - it surprises me, when people are amazed, that they can answer polite and calmly - who cares? It's just some random "fool" asking - sometimes very stoopid - questions. Don't you teach your kids "Sticks and stones.. aso" any more? Grow the freak up.. "Would have pulled a knife"? Dang loonies..
Barbara Walter’s interviewed Billy Graham on the front porch of his home in North Carolina. She started the insults with a comment about his humble home. Mr Graham that he and his wife were very comfortable in their home . The next insult came when Barbara Walter’s mentioned that the car Mr Graham drove was 10 years old, she really could not believe that anyone would drive a 10 year old car. Mr Graham replied, with a smile on his face, that his car was in good working order, that it got him where he needed to go. The interview revealed a lot about Barbara Walters and her shallow life and how kind Billy Graham really was. Thanks for reviewing the Dolly interview. It revealed that Barbara Walter’s needed to pay attention to these “Hillbillies “ , that she could have learned to be gracious instead of rude. Dolly with a smile put Barbara in her place, not even a raised eyebrow.
“I’d never stoop so low as to be fashionable that’s the easiest thing in the world to do” was a very clever shot at Barbara Walker’s especially considering Barbara has always been very fashionable. I felt it was beautifully and intelligently executed.
"your kind of people" is just a terrible, ignorant phrase, I can't believe Walters could use phrases like this in a professional interview and not be ashamed of herself.
@Lifeafter40 I'm so sorry to hear that you've been subjected to such rude and hurtful remarks. I am absolutely appalled that anyone thinks that way, much less speaks out. I've never been on the receiving end of a remark like that, but it infuriates me whenever I hear it directed at anyone. Dolly not only handled it with grace as you said, but she showed how much class she has. Very intelligent and classy lady!
It may be cliché to say, but Dolly really is a National Treasure. She's one of the most talented, savvy artists in the music industry, a humanitarian and philanthropist, and one of the smartest, witty, well-spoken celebrities I've ever seen. Well done.
"...because I am secure." The eyebrow raise there speaks VOLUMES. Really, her body language throughout the interview could be its own video. Dolly knew exactly what she was doing/saying, and I love her all the more for it.
I’ve always been curious as to how Dolly learned to handle herself so well? She’s never been involved in any type of scandal, nobody’s had anything negative to say about her, and decades later she’s still always confident, funny, & poised!!
She's just that classy a woman. Fun fact, when Dolly Parton goes out in public not for show she doesn't look or dress anything like that so she's not recognized. The "look" is just that, a look.
Correct! It's called being raised right. All parents should teach these lessons: Be humble. Be kind. Be respectful. Be generous. Don't lie, cheat or steal. Be the bigger person. Stand up for the weak or voiceless. Stand your ground & don't be taken advantage of. Always thank God for your blessings because there's always someone who's struggle is worse. When you can, give a hand up to those behind you who are trying - not a handout to those who refuse to work hard. Love fully.
I think it's because she's her authentic self, with everyone. She never pretends & she always has a kind generous heart. She's one of a kind in the entertainment world. *Much love & respect Dolly.*
I adore Dolly Parton. I'm moved to tears by her grace, kindness and strength. Growing up in the 70's, I remember Walters had a lot of respect as a female trail-blazing journalist. I'm scratching my head about this now. She is simply a "mean-girl" in this interview. She blew the opportunity to elevate another trail-blazing woman. There are many interesting inquiries about the challenges Dolly experienced instead of being demeaning. I wonder if Walters looked back at her approach with regret.
I saw Dolly Parton in concert in my hometown, Glasgow, Scotland, a few years ago, and she was stunningly brilliant. She’s so charming, and you know the charm is not fake. This is a woman who has been in the celebrity business for many, many years now, yet you can tell that nothing has changed in her personality or outlook in life. Some people would say she comes from humble beginnings, but she came from rich beginnings. Not rich by monetary meaning, but rich in the aspect of respect, decency, and love. And she’s never allowed celebrity to affect her. She’s an absolute diamond of a person.
Class, talent, intelligence, inner strength, kindness, self actualization, even temperament, and a healthy sense of self. Those are all words to describe some of characteristics of Dolly Parton. Yes she’s physically beautiful. But it’s her internal beauty that really shines the brightest. She handled this interview with so much grace and class, it’s a masterclass in how to handle uncomfortable situations; she is clearly someone who does not allow the negative opinions of others form her own self worth. We could all learn a thing or two from the incomparable Dolly Parton.
I've also met Dolly in the late 70's when I was a hotel clerk. She is a very sweet and gracious lady. Has more class than most people, especially Barbara Walters. Loved Dolly then, love her now!
Barbara sets the bar pretty low for respect... and ever so high for arrogance. How she made such a successful career speaks volumes about the American public.
That’s one of the most masterful single person interviews I’ve ever seen. At every low road Walters had taken, Dolly turned it around w/such ease, grace and charm. There’s also a naturalness that she has which shows the power one can have in coming from such a good & loving place.
When Barbara said “you don’t have to look like this”, Dolly’s response actually brought a tear to my eye. She is so genuinely good natured, her personality shines. She is so inspiring, how she doesn’t let people bring her down and she remains true to herself. Dolly Parton will always be one of the greatest American icons of all time. 💗
Oh, BS. She had a job to do, and she did it. That’s what she was paid to do. Dolly knew exactly what she was facing. No celeb went into a Barbara Walters interview unprepared. Dolly had people to coach her. And it tells you nothing about Walters’ character or personality off camera. Grow up.
I wouldn’t say true character, we don’t know that. She’s using interview techniques to try to get the juiciest interview possible. It’s an antagonistic style that was more popular at the time, not as much butt kissing back then. She clearly fell flat though and this is just an awful interview. She’s had shining moments but this was a low.
It takes guts and steel spine to stand up for yourself without falling into the trap of getting mad. She handle's this "mean girl" moment with poise and grace.
True AND after the interview, Barbara probably left there thinking they were on great terms. And because of how amazing Dolly is, they probably were. What a unique woman.
Dolly was ready for it. She was the butt of endless (stupid) jokes by every half-assed comedian, talk show host, reporter Etc. Dolly was used to everyone having an opinion on her breast’s for decades.
What intelligence, class, and heart Ms. Dolly Parton has! She responded to Barbara Walters’ condescensions with grace, confidence, frankness, elegance, and humility. Huge Respect to you, Ms. Dolly Parton! You are an admirable human being and a model for all girls and women.
"I am sure of myself as a person and I am sure of my talent". I got cold chills when she said this, even after being bombarded with those ridiculous questions. We can ALL learn a few things from Dolly Parton.
Dolly Parton is the best example of how to present yourself. No matter how hard Walters (who is a horrible manipulative journalist, had to say it never liked her much) tried Dolly refused to speak badly of her past or feel any of the shame that trying to be put on her. She is respectful, kind, and always a ray of sunshine even in the darkest of times. I'm so glad I got to live at the same time as Dolly Parton!!
I met Dolly Parton when I was very young, I believe I was 6. My grandparents took me to see her perform and she talked to us afterward. I was only 6, but that conversation stuck in my mind all of my life because such a famous person was the nicest person to me and I was nobody just a little girl. She talked to me as if in the moment she would rather be talking to me than moving on to everyone else waiting. She told me I had beautiful brown eyes. I wish I could have met her again but I never did. I am 46 now
Amazing. I truly believe Dolly Parton is the best American. I wish more of us could handle ourselves with honor and kindness and strength the way that Dolly does.
From the first time I heard her when I was a little girl, I've loved Dolly. I was around 7 years old, and I really believed that she was singing just for me. I have followed her as she moved forward in her career, but mostly, I am in awe of her charitable work. I love love love Dolly.
Dolly has always been so positive, polite, never aggressive, never argumentative, never falling for the bait when she’s being interviewed. She’s been asked about Trump, and she handled it so well, refusing to just do what almost everyone else does. This is one reason why she is so loved by most people because she gives no reasons to dislike her. She’s very loving and kind, and the world would be a better place if we could all be more like her.
Loved by everybody, too. I was so moved when the Highwomen called her out on stage with them at the Newport Folk Festival and the audience welcomed her with delerious happiness. She's a class act and top of the line singer/songwriter as well.
Barbara Walters was worth $170 million when she died. Dolly is worth $650 million. She knew how important it was to be kind to someone as disadvantaged as Barbara was. 😊
BINGO! BW here is clearly pissed because of Dolly's bank balance! From her background in NYC, BW was all about the $$$. Makes me wonder who the hillbilly is/was? :-)
Dolly is definitely our Queen in East Tennessee. I'm from a small town about 90 miles from Dolly's hometown. She has done so much for Sevierville and East Tennessee. Her business endeavors have created thousands of jobs, her Imagination Library first started here in East Tennessee and has spread to children nation wide, giving each participant a new, age appropriate book every month from birth to 5years. She also had several scholarship programs for the children of her hometown. When the area burned in a devastating forest fire she not only donated millions of her own money, she hosted a telethon urging others to give and raised millions more. And most recently, she donated millions to Vanderbilt University to find a vaccine for coronavirus. Not to mention, she is a beautiful person inside and out. She has always carried herself with class and humor. So yes, for these reasons and so many more, Dolly is our Queen and we love her!!
I was in the grocery store and some visitors from Massachusetts were excited to find her cake mixes on the shelf. And I turned to them and said, “She’s our queen.” And they immediately all said, “We love her!” She indeed is a role model in southern grace, charm, and class!
My mom's side of the family live in Morristown TN. I live in western NC about 2 hours away from Morristown. My youngest sister used to work at The Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge. I have a picture of her and the other Dixie Stampede girls with Dolly. She really does care about all of the people that work for her.
You stopped short of one of dolly’s most iconic quotes where Walters asks her about people calling her a dumb blonde, and dolly says she doesn’t mind because she’s not dumb and isn’t blonde either
This interview is proof that lack of education does not equate to stupidity, nor does a great education automatically bestow true class. Dolly outclassed Walters all the way!
This is why I've always loved Dolly. Underneath her image which some people are quick to judge is an incredibly intelligent woman with a pure heart. Barbara was foolish for underestimating her and probably regretted it afterwards.
This interviewed showed, not only how well mannered, and we'll composed Dolly can be under pressure (or under personal attack), but also how truly intelligent she is.
@@angelamary9493 y’know, even if the interview was fake, she was not prepared for the abrasive bullying she experienced. so considering how well she handled it, it proves just how much she actually loves and cares about herself. we’re all bullied, it’s how you stand back up that matters💜 don’t take it to heart hun
That is one of the most inspiring and teaching interviews I have ever seen. The way Dolly carries herself, her ease, wits, playfulness and self confidence are so inspiring! The effortless way in which she handled this truly ugly interview, Bravo!!! every single word and response... it was brilliant. Great lady to learn from.
Dolly Parton has always been a gem. This interview was as catty as it gets, yet Dolly handled it with her legendary wit, Southern charm, grace and honesty. Something never even closely exhibited on Walter's part.
Barbara Walters is a bag....she thought she was going to humiliate this grand lady ...I would have reminded her that people make fun of her all the time BABAH WAWA
I agree about Barbara Walter's. Even before you began to comment I was surprised to see that rude opening to the interview and continuing on. Good for Dolley. A woman full of grace and charm. An example to us all.
Barbara demonstrates the very same New York attitude I too have encountered of looking down on Southerners particularly harshly and not considering fly over states containing anybody worthy of their time or effort. I admonished a Bronx woman for labeling a Food Network show host in Oklahoma a hick. This cook has a degree from USC and her dad was a podiatric surgeon--not at all the stuff of which hicks are made in my book.
That quiet "I thought that was what you meant." was such a good thing to do, because it made it clear that Dolly DID understand Barbara was being rude, while also: A) showing the shot didn't hurt her B) lampshading that the question was rude while smiling politely C) leaving no room for false interpretation D) offering a chance for her interviewer to take back the weird question about how big her breasts were at 11 y.o. without sounding unwarrantedly aggressive or meek.
An interviewer once said, "Dolly, you are always so happy." Dolly replied, "No, I always act like I am happy because I have an image to uphold." Dolly likely wanted to snap at some people but she always maintained her composure. Dolly likely wanted to snap at Barbara but Dolly maintained her composure to uphold her positive image.
Yes exactly it just feels like talking to those annoying aunties. They are always gonna be toxic and manipulative openly but you just answer openly how u see ur life. Taking the high road is much calmed and helpful then one uping. Unless u are in a bad mood then it might happen.
THIS was the interview when I truly understood why Dolly is soo beloved by Every generation. Its not just the hair, the music, the body, the smile, the entertainment but a perfect reflection of a Great Person. There are very few actual Great People and when we spot one, everyone pretty much agrees like they have for Dolly.
I wish I had understood when I was younger. In the 80s all I heard about was her big boobs. She did seem like a joke. But i never much heard her music and barely know it now.
What Dolly did in this interview is the traditional southern way women used to be taught to react. You meet aggression/rudeness with being sickenly sweet. My grandma said "you know what really gets at people, when you don't let butter melt in your mouth". When a southern woman says "well bless your heart" or calls you honey or darlin it isn't them being sweet lol. She also used the other old hillbilly adage "they can't bother you if they don't know where your goats tied" which basically means that if they don't know what bothers you then they have no power over you.
So very true. My mother grew up in the Kentucky hollars & there's never been a person who could one up her or make her answer something in discomfort. People who grow up dirt poor financially are the most intelligent, thoughtful but definitely strong & with the warmest heart. Your answer was right on. Thanks!
My dad would always say "don't let them get your goat!" And I knew what he meant through context, and I never even asked if I had a goat. It was just normal like "duh dad they won't get my goat." But hearing it again like that highlights the weirdness of that phrase in my head
I love Dolly so much. She’s always so fun and intelligent in interviews. She’s done so much charity as well. I live in West Virginia and my kids received free books from her for years.
Exactly! when she told Dolly "you don't have to look like this" and then tried to soften the blow with "you're very beautiful", i was like "that's right, that's why you're envious of her and need to attack her appearance".
“I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable.” She DID one up Barbara, she just did it better so perhaps it escaped your radar. She then continues with a delicately veiled virtue signal of how she’s real on the inside, which subtly makes the jab that Barbara and people like her who cannot see past Dolly (and people like her)’s outer appearance are the truly ridiculous ones. She definitely got her shots in.
It’s almost like Walters feels threatened by Dolly Parton’s self assurance, genuineness, and freedom to play. She seems insecure in her own self in these questions. Dolly is an absolutely amazing human. She’s easily the most intelligent and well put together person in the conversation
Barbara is insecure, because Dolly is an astute businesswoman like Barbara , but musically talented to boot--oh but she's country. Hmm she's not supposed to be that voluptuous and smart. Barbara has never been a woman people fawn over. I sense internalized racism from Barbara
@@yorkiemom6144 I thought the same when I watched the interview!!!! Walters was projecting so baaaad, like who hurt her???? It definitely felt that colleagues or other people surrounding her made those kind of comments of either a pink skirt or a bow on her hair... "you're not going to be taken seriously like that! (looking feminine and not masculine)" so the shock of someone like Dolly being hyper feminine and incredibly successful shocked her 🙈 it's incredibly sad for me to know this still happens 😩
If you watch Walters' interviews through the years, you'll notice that she often used a soft focus on herself, and had flowers in the picture frame next to her. And how she treated the interviewee depended upon whether she liked the person or not --- you'll see this with her female interviewees, some got soft focus and flowers too, while others didn't.
I had the fortunate opportunity to work with her twice and she was and still is THE MODEL for southern grace, beauty, and confidence, her voice and tone is so soothing. She is an absolute NATIONAL TREASURE, and one of the nicest and kind person ever, period. LOVE DOLLY!!!!!! And thanks for the kudos on the suggestion for this video, it is my first UA-cam Shoutout lol. Great job brother, luv man- Joshua
I didn't realize she came through town when you were working. That's awesome. Thank you again for the suggestion. Great clip for a reaction. I had fun making it.
I'm absolutely convinced that Dolly is a saint, if there ever was such a thing. She is one of the most intelligent, charming, classy, self-confident yet humble, kind and articulate people on the face of this earth. I adore everything about her.
She is a despicable SHILL....I threw put all my Dolly CDs when she publicly stilled for an experimental you know what, she got saline but wants you dead...disgusting and so obviously PAID...hasn't got enough money? She stilled to her own song Joelene...embarressing and LOW.....same with Ricky Gervais...since when do we see medical procedures on anyone except during this hoax? Wake up🤡
And a true genius; she writes music everyday of her life. She sells a lot of her music to others because she is so prolific. I love her as an artist, a Christian, as an aunt, entrepreneur, humanitarian and business woman long before her time. ❤️🎶🎤🎸
Dolly never drops her engaging smile the entire time. As long as she keeps smiling, not even a skilled interviewer like Walters can lay a glove on her.
Dolly's first answer makes me miss my West Virginia grandmother so so much. Eighth grade education, but not the least bit dumb. She had great class and a huge heart. She loved and accepted everyone. She gave everyone a chance. If you screwd her, or her loved ones over, you were OUT. But not until after she gave you an honest chance. Country class all the way. And, proudly called herself a hillbilly, but don't you call her that!
Baba wawa should’ve been fired asap . Most people who watched this were assuming she would be removed. To any media clowns that make a living from interviewing popular people, and think its ok to insult the “guests”: “thou shall NOT mock the flesh on which you feed” -the owners manual. Absolutely an embarrassment to human nature.
The fact that these people aren’t educated in the program centers is why they are so intelligent 😂 The programming centers produce full fledged idiots. You see what’s going on in the world today and that’s proof.
I wonder if Dolly left this interview, all those years ago, with a "well bless her heart" in her mind. I know 100% that any of the LADIES in my family here in lil hillbilly Kentucky would have. Not one _nasty_ word, but just "well, bless her heart!" ❤ I always said that our accent is very misleading to the wrong ones hearing it. They want to hear stupid but there's not a dummy in our bunch here. I bet your grandma was just as golden as mine was, a real one!! 💜💜💜
Dolly was so incredibly beautiful in this interview! *It's important to note that Dolly knew EXACTLY what Barbara was doing. Notice when she says her people aren't educated, but they are "very, very intelligent" and she looked at Barbara. That was a sign to Barbara that even though she wasn't educated, she recognized what Barbara was doing!* I loved that! It is so funny that UA-cam suggested your video to me! I was JUST having a conversation about this interview and how exceptionally WELL Dolly handled this interview! She was EXCEPTIONAL here! She turned every single one of Barbara's terrible questions around on her. Barbara tried 20 ways to Sunday to insult this woman and Dolly just sidestepped each and every question! Also, Barbara's jealousy and disdain for Dolly couldn't be covered up. It was clear that Barbara resented the success Dolly was having by using her looks, even though she is and was immensely talented. Dolly came across as so incredibly sweet, intelligent and down to earth. When I first saw this interview, some years back, I couldn't believe the misogynistic way Barbara handled Dolly, but I also was grateful to see the grace Dolly exercised with her. She gave a shining example of how to exercise self-control in an interview.
Dolly is so amazing that I don’t think she ever saw herself the way we do. She is Jolene. The woman every man wants, and the woman ever woman wants to be. I never *stop* talking about Dolly. I know she gets credit, but she’s owed more!
I'll be 66 next month, and as strange as it seems, Dolly taught me, as a young woman, one of the greatest lessons of my life. She was interviewed for an article in cosmo, and the reporter reached out and asked her if they could postpone because he had just gotten permission to interview Charles Manson. Dolly immediately said no. I don't want any connection, even speaking with anyone connected to him. It was then left to the reporter what he wanted to do, and he chose to keep the original interview date. It taught me to stand on my convictions, irrespective of what anyone else thought. It also taught me to make a judgment between right from wrong. Dolly is not only talented, she's one of the best business persons in the music industry, all inclusive. Thanks for posting your thoughts. Patricia
If Barbara Walters had interviewed Dolly like this in 'our' time, she would have been in a lot of trouble. How disrespectful and derogatory can you be? Just watch her do this interview! I have the utmost respect for Dolly... What a wonderful human being, always full of respect and dignity to other people. Bravo!!
So true! Barbara u should be ashamed of urself! Every sentence and question she put to Dolly was dripped with insult. Barbara should try asking such qstns in 2022 and see if she's not sacked or her show axed!
What are you talking about? Barbara walters still does this and will continue to do it. Because for Barbara, she is entitled to be rude and she is above the law.
Dolly is a national treasure. Her intelligence is next level. So many times an interviewer gets the impression that they got one up on her, only to find later that she completely schooled them. Her accomplishments in music, entertainment & business, not to mention her philanthropic work is really hard to comprehend. Those that have paid attentiion are awestruck by her and her genuine goodness.
“ iIt was country class but a great deal of class.” One of the best responses ever. Barbara had no idea who she was talking to ;Dolly, or that southern women can read more than words when people speak and aren’t intimidated by others no matter who they are or where they are from.We don’t try to hurt others or insult them, however we aren’t going to put up with any mess from anyone trying to put us down or play us as superficial. We are sure of ourselves while staying humble. I don’t want to be like anyone else but who I was created to be. I take inspiration from Dolly and many people but know I’m the only me and live accordingly. Being real where it counts is everything. I never minded telling a joke or letting others think whatever they want about me and not taking false opinions or liars to heart.
Dolly was ON point with that read. She saw straight through Barbara was was able to redirect her digs right back at her, this was absolutely masterful.
Seeing this all these years later and realizing how incredibly young she was at the time simply solidifies her place as the Queen and GOAT. It’s astounding the amount of grace she had at that age. We all expect it from her now but seeing this is absolute solid gold.
It was a different era. When you see some of the things journalists in the 70's asked ABBA or Maria Callas, you also wonder: "Why didn't they just leave?"
There's an old joke that goes something like: A southern woman goes to a finishing school where she learns to say "That's nice..." instead of "F you!"...🤣🤣
Dolly definitely put her ‘security’ out front and didn’t hesitate to be very blunt, but yet in her humble and sweet way - put Barbara in her place. Dolly is a treasure 🌸💗
The coolest part of this conversation is early on she says, "a lot of class, it's country class," and "not very educated but very intelligent,'" and then later on she absolutely demonstrates it.
I have so much respect for Dolly Parton's amazing efforts with childhood literacy. Each month my grandson receives a wonderful new book at no charge from her book program. Check into this, the smiles say it all! 📖
There is an old Southern "kill'em with kindness" thing we do in the old South that always works to our advantage. The bible describes it as "...heaping burning coals upon your enemies heads..." by being kind to them. It is meant to cause them to be ashamed. It is the way mature people act and react. Dolly has it down pat 😘
@@AD-eg9cw It’s a great way to realize you don’t need to react but rather respond:) also, the bible says God doesn’t like religious people. They prefer people who will love and respect Their word and one another💜

I agree with you on this
You ignored that Barbara Walters gave Dolly the opportunity to respond to the ugly jokes that were being made about her. That was the purpose of this interview. I suspect that you are attracted to Trump and fascism and this is your mini campaign against journalism.
@@MalteseKat how did Trump get into this mix?
What a shameful display of callousness by Walters. 😳
Walters was so rude. I love Dolly- forever an optimist, smart, funny, talented beyond measure and a giver. Where is the original clip of this interview you said would be posted, please?
Dolly is the epitome of "killing them with kindness." She absolutely eviscerated Walters and never once had to speak an ill word of her.
Barbara Walters was too dimwitted to realize Dolly had eviscerated her.
I could feel the daggers going in as Dolly smiled and answered :)
Amazing how Dolly handled such disrespectful and manipulative questions with unshakable poise and charm. She is a ninja in this interview. What an incredible human.
Agreed!
Barbara couldn't get out of her East Coast snob mode. She clearly didn't understand Dolly and consequently asked a lot of aggressively condescending questions. If it were me, I'd have walked away from the interview, but Dolly had the poise and dignity to rise above the cheap shots.
I agree! Barbara Walters warped spirit lives on in her show "The View."
@@davemathews7890 Biden is a joke and an embarrassment. You should be ashamed if you voted for it.
Yep yep. Don’t fk w Dolly. Patriarchs we’re dismissive. She quietly earned millions, and then helped charities. Queen
Ooh. didn't see it that way but now I do
@@skippy9659 helped charities is an understatement.

That is what happens to educated snobs !!!

Yep, she's talked about how businessmen underestimate her, and she's got something on all of them (not sure if it's this interview or 60 Minutes Australia I've just watched, one of the two. Not malicious, but I think she enjoys how she looks but alos uses the fact that people think 'dumb blonde' when she very much is not.

Dolly and Barbra are almost wearing the same, Walter's is actually showing more skin...😂
“They weren’t very educated but they were very intelligent” I teared up when she said that. What a beautiful quote and something that more people need to understand.
Yea, they had Common Sense which many people, Educated or not , don't have. It's not really Common.
I live on the other side of the world as an engineer, but when I visit my family back in the US coal mining country, their pragmatic intelligence often astounds me.

Walters' tone sounds remarkably snobbish and pretentious. Dolly handles her brilliantly.
I totally agree! Dolly is a class act, totally genuine (under the wigs and makeup), whereas Walters is a superficial phony right to the bone.
When Dolly said on a talk show, "Do you know you much it costs to look this cheap?" I instantly fell in love with her, and I still am. What a woman.

And. "I'm not dumb. And I'm not blond either!" Barbra in this interview, was clearly on the wrong end of the IQ Teeter Totter.

All I could do was smile like a clown, couldnt even speak!! lol

Crazy how Dolly Parton has transcended each generation and how each generation still appreciates her. Genius tier.
I’m 33 and i started to see how special and real she was when i was 27
It’s that authentic, high vibrational energy she emits! She said it herself …she’s secure.

I had to chase it half way down the runway before I caught up with it!" Maybe I'm just not as soft as most.
I’m a 57 year old man, and it brought a tear to my eye. What a wonderful person she is.

She is lovely. Dolly for president 💕
She’s never been involved in any type of scandal, nobody’s had anything negative to say about her, and decades later she’s still always confident, funny, & poised!!
that is how most Appalachian people behave ...they have a humbleness and cool demeanor...but if pushed and pushed watch out...
She's just that classy a woman. Fun fact, when Dolly Parton goes out in public not for show she doesn't look or dress anything like that so she's not recognized. The "look" is just that, a look.
Correct! It's called being raised right. All parents should teach these lessons:
Be humble.
Love fully.
she's definitely been wrapped up in drama, it's just been a very long time since it's been brought up
I think it's because she's her authentic self, with everyone.
I love the way you phrased this! I wholeheartedly agree!
Well said! Dolly is top class!!☑️☑️☑️
"One is only poor, only if they choose to be" ~ Dolly's "Coat of Many Colors"

Dolly has always been masterful at deflecting rudeness and asinine questions. A master class in class!
I love love love her too!
I think it's hilarious that Dolly is far more articulate than the NYC snob with the tiny bank balance comparatively.
I'm a black hillbilly and proud of it. Love me some Dolly Parton.
Plenty of us are out there
I love you!!
God bless Dolly. She has sent my children free books on a regular basis.

I would give anything to look like Dolly than BW. I think Barbara was jealous.
Would Blahbra say to Elvis or Liberace " you don't have to look like this"?
This goes beyond having a "bad" interview. This puts on full display of what Walter's true character was like.
Was like. 😝
Jealousy's a b*tch 😄
good point. which is also probably why her show the view is such a virus that wont die, lol
This is a sweet story!

Agreed! Dolly is a role model for humaneness.
This is how all celebrities used to be. Watch any classic star interview. They are charming and never speak on politics.
If only she had been this quiet about the vaccine too.

I love that Dolly never shy's away from looking Barbara in the eye as well as the camera. You can tell she's proud of what she's saying.
Right out of the gate, Dolly realizes she is far more articulate and quicker thinking than the NYC snob.
Dolly has so much confidence and so much emotional maturity. She's what I would call "an old soul."

I remember she was asked what people would say about her in 100 years time.
She said 'Damn, she looks good for her age!'
Except in 2020, when she advertised the shot.
That quiet "I thought that was what you meant." was such a good thing to do, because it made it clear that Dolly DID understand Barbara was being rude, while also:
A) showing the shot didn't hurt her
B) lampshading that the question was rude while smiling politely
C) leaving no room for false interpretation
D) offering a chance for her interviewer to take back the weird question about how big her breasts were at 11 y.o. without sounding unwarrantedly aggressive or meek.
Yes, agreed on all points!
Great breakdown!
Yes! Dolly should definitely teach a class on communication. I would definitely benefit from it. ❤
D = 🥇🏆
Dolly more than held her own. Lovely and smart
She acted more professional than Walters, IMO.
Much harder to not take the bait then to not realize you've been baited.
Yes exactly it just feels like talking to those annoying aunties. They are always gonna be toxic and manipulative openly but you just answer openly how u see ur life. Taking the high road is much calmed and helpful then one uping. Unless u are in a bad mood then it might happen.
How Walters became famous for being a journalist is beyond me. How Dolly became a Superstar has never came into question. God Bless you Dolly.
Spoken by a true southerner! Some of us was raised right! N we have our own language! God bless ya!
Well, love your heart, honey.
Straight up truth!
I love Dolly so much. She’s always so fun and intelligent in interviews. She’s done so much charity as well. I live in West Virginia and my kids received free books from her for years.
Walters froths at the mouth with jealousy and Dolly’s class shines through.
I couldn't argue against that view!
yup
Exactly! when she told Dolly "you don't have to look like this" and then tried to soften the blow with "you're very beautiful", i was like "that's right, that's why you're envious of her and need to attack her appearance".
Yea. Walters’ motives seemed bad.
This is such a great example of toxic feminism.
Yeeeeesssss!!! 👏🏻👏🏻Well-worded!! I was thinking along the same lines...
so smooth, so beautiful, shes a goddess
She also implied Barbara was NOT real on the inside.
But she did it in that southern class, "bless your heart" kind of way lol
Yes, she certainly did and in the sweetest and classiest way
It’s almost like Walters feels threatened by Dolly Parton’s self assurance, genuineness, and freedom to play.
@@erossinema8797 Barbara is envious because in her line of work she had to downplay her femininity. She didn't have the freedom that Dolly did.

Yesss. I love her.
Clearly Dolly is the most intelligent of the two and a class act with Southern manners and charm.
Reporters are just after fame with their interviews!
Baba wawa should’ve been fired asap . Most people who watched this were assuming she would be removed. To any media clowns that make a living from interviewing popular people, and think its ok to insult the “guests”: “thou shall NOT mock the flesh on which you feed” -the owners manual.
Not one _nasty_ word, but just "well, bless her heart!" ❤

Tbh Barbara treats all the women she interviews this way. Just obnoxious.
Patricia

I absolutely love how Dolly handled this interview. I learned a lot from her.

The coolest part of this conversation is early on she says, "a lot of class, it's country class," and "not very educated but very intelligent,'" and then later on she absolutely demonstrates it.
