And today a patchwork coat is a style statement, just like Dolly Parton herself. I loved her as she corrected a patronizing Barbara Walters during an interview. It's on YT, worth a watch.
For someone who brags about being "trashy", she sure has a LOT of class. That whole crowd is going to have a story as great to them as that story about her coat is to her. And the guy on guitar was perfect, too, and he'll remember that day for the rest of his life.
No auto tune, no lip sync, no fancy electronic adjustments. Just a gal with a voice and a style to please the ears. True music the way it used to happen! ❤❤❤❤
31 years after the video was filmed and 7 years after it has been posted here on UA-cam, Dolly's kindness and professionalism (even while on vacation) shines through. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you for the clarification, I haven’t referenced any of the celebrities except Dolly, but I caught a few gists of your explanation. They named a sheep Dolly that was genetically cloned, in neighbouring Scotland I believe. Anyway, the turning of the speaker behind her increased the volume of her song. I worried for her that her song choice put off some people. What song choice would you have chosen? Dolly has so many amazing songs.
Dolly is one of the world's greatest treasures. There are guys living in caves in Afghanistan who haven't seen the sun for a decade but they know who Dolly is. Hahahahaha
The Irish are just like her people back in butcher holler. And the folk music of Ireland and Scotland forms the basis of country music from Appalachia and, like jazz, uniquely American. Dolly is among her people and they understand her. That song, written about her severely impoverished childhood in Appalachia, could have easily been written about childhood memories of Ireland. Perfect alignment among singer and her audience, expressing essential values of maternal love, gratitude and humility. Sentiments both very real and transcendent. Dolly and the Irish bless us.
In all fairness Steve Cooney could play with anybody ! He’s one of the most versatile musicians in the world. But what a performance from Dolly in an Irish country pub, no sound man, a mediocre PA system ,no ego and a lone guitarist ! It shows how good both of them really are! Fantastic performance.
This pub is as Irish as it gets..It's in the heart of an area in Kerry where Irish is spoken as the first language..Also some of greatest and best Irish Traditional Musicians, Singers & Dancers come from the area..The guy who owned the pub Paudi O She's ( also a famous Irish Gaelic Footballer) died suddenly a few years ago..Imagine someone of the calibre of Dolly Parton walking into your local pub..being asked to sing with musicians she had never heard of..She sure is a beautiful lady in heart & soul..
She's so confident, so poised... and she's very conscious of EVERY performance no matter how big or small. She's up there with Elvis, really. Only way more with it than Elvis ever was!
now lets not forget to give credit to that very dedicated speaker turning man, he deserves every bit of it for understanding what was causing that feedback screech and intervening to solve it the best he could
I love how Dolly appreciated Steve's playing, like one musician recognising and enjoying the talent of another. It helped her sing the song in an unusual environment. I love how music is a collaborative experience that connects people from the heart.
I have to find the interview but I believe the second "blonde" reference is that she was insinuating that she is not an "Airhead" blonde. Replace the "and" with ";", separate the sentences. Dolly is certainly not a dumb person.
@@corvetteshorts4670 Dolly Parton is a self made multi multimillionaire from what used to be a hole in the wall mountain town, which because of her is actually a respectable tourist destination. So you're 100 percent right dolly isnt dumb she is a business genius and very talented musician and writer.
@@ewhyte8059 One of the reasons why Dolly is so wonderful is that she didn't model herself on anyone else, she is just truly herself. I think that's a good lesson for everybody - be truly yourself.
She was right at home. I pass by a mural of her portrait everyday so she’s always on my mind. She used to make late night talk show hosts blush! It’s always great to hear any great talent in a reduced, raw mode. Cheers
From what I can gather, the place Dolly comes from is exactly where our Irish and Scottish forefathers settled when they left Ireland for the new world, and the appalachian people are mostly Irish and Scottish descendants anyway. Bluegrass and country music both found their way to appalachian communities through iroshband Scottish emigrants who took celtic music with them, and it should come as no surprise for any appalachians to hear that bluegrass and country music are very popular here in Ireland. We are the same people. We love the same music. God bless our appalachian brothers and sisters, and I always give a shout to our newfie brothers and sisters too. Good people, all of you.
Loretta Lynn was from Butchers Holler Kentucky. Dolly is from around Sevierville, Tennessee. Both are small towns in the Appalachia Mountains. Dolly has done so much for her home state and her home county. When fire swept through the Smokey Mountains, Dolly helped so many people build their businesses and homes back. She has given so much to the education of children and the economy of Tennessee! Recently Tennessee wanted to put a statue of her in Nashville in the state capital and Dolly very humbly declined the honor. That is just how she is, a generous soul who gives and gives but so many of her contributions are done privately because she does it out of the goodness of her heart not for any fame or glory. Speaking as a Tennessean myself, I can think of no one else who is as respected and loved in our state as Dolly Parton. What a true blessing to the world she is.
She also gave books to so many poor children that she drastically raised the literacy rate in tennessee. And she recently donated a TON to covid research. She’s literally one of the only people on earth I think is deserving of being called a saint. She has done nothing but help people around her. Even people who had wronged her. She still helped them in their times of need. I’m not religious, but I honestly believe she’s the closest thing to jesus we’ve gotten.

It shows clearly how incredible her voice is to sing like that with a single guitar played by a guy she never met. She is a gift to humanity in many ways.
Props to the man at 1:50 who adjusted the PA in reaction to the feedback a bit earlier. Little things like that make the whole performance much more enjoyable.
I think that's her very private partner. I could be very wong. However that's someone who would be looking out for her. That's my gut instinct. 😂 I noticed it too. Once he realizes he was being recorded he looked away and got out of there fast. Don't blame him one bit for wanting to be private.
I’m getting through the third years after daughter’s death using music. This is my song of the day for December 2, 2021. What a treat to have pure music like this from Seamus and Dolly. Thank you to them both and to the people in the pub in county Kerry for your unknowing support for a grieving mother. Much love 💕🐝💕🐞💕🇺🇸ps, Iv’e had 6 female family members die in the last 2-1/2 years including two last month. Louise (my mom), Laura (my only child), Barbara (a sister-in-law), Olga (my mother-in-law), Shirley (an aunt), and Kathi who is the sister of my heart (an “ex” sister-in-law). They took a piece of my heart, but left some of theirs behind to help soothe the world.
Sending love to you. ❤️ I also lost a daughter but she was a baby so I know it’s different. Dolly has a duet with Brad Paisley called “When I get where I’m going” that is very comforting when I hear it. It’s here on UA-cam if you ever want to check it out. If you have a song for each day planned I certainly don’t want to interfere with that. Just a suggestion for any other time. I like your song of the day routine.
I've loved Dolly since I was a little kid. She just beams. When she passes away, hopefully in the very distant future, she'll surely have a crowd of souls numbering in the millions, just waiting to welcome her in heaven.
She's one of the most genuinely good and decent people out there. Lived in Tennessee for a while and came to know a little more about her philanthropy and her life. Truly a remarkable woman. Loves to entertain and loves the limelight, but does a lot of good with no intention whatsoever of seeking praise or attention for it.
That was gold but my favorite is when the interviewer asked if she got upset when people said she was just a dumb blonde. She said no because I know I’m not dumb and I know I’m not blonde.
Her voice is amazing perfectly in tune and she's always ultra Professional , very few singers can just step up and sing and sound like they do in a studio live
It just goes to show how humble Dolly is, that she would be on a vacation in Ireland, and requested if she would sing a quick song, that she wouldn't refuse. She is one of a kind.
One advice from a non Irish: If you visit a pub somewhere in Ireland you better have your repertoire ready, no matter if you are famous or unknown and no matter if you are a good or bad musician.
Editing takes time and training and autotune is a fusion of electronic effects and the voice rather than somehow perfecting the natural voice... your gonna piss off 50% of all working musicians with this attitude
I don't think he's putting down editing and tuning. Even the greatest artists use them, including Dolly herself when she's in the studio I'm sure. The point was simply that Dolly sounds absolutely amazing even without it.
Editing and auto tune should add something, but there should be some substance there in the first place. Like you're losing the atmosphere and the warmth of a live performance, and some of the subtleties of tone etc... So you make up for it with some reverb. Maybe you tidy up a few little inconsistencies at the same time. But if you can't sing in tune, or produce a good, consistent tone, or just perform music properly, you've no business recording. And dolly is clearly a consummate professional. Quite aside from having something unique, which she does, she has the polish of someone who has been doing it for years.
Dolly sounds good singing live with nothing but a microphone and standard speaker. She happily got up during her vacation to spontaneously entertain a small group of people. Talented, kind, friendly, generous, what more could people want. Good guitar backups, too.
That was Steve Cooney from Australia who came to Ireland in early 80s to trace his Irish heritage.. He stayed.. He is an incredibly talented musician.. Dolly is an absolute legend.. That was in Paudie O Sheas pub in Dingle.. He was a famous footballer sadly no longer around
Not many of the country singers today could get up in front of a crowd with nothing more than a guitar and make music like that unrehearsed, good job Dolley, classy lady.
Come to Ireland. Break out the tunes anywhere. I was at a FUNERAL and my guitar was in my car after a sesiún (Irish music get together) and they got me to sing a few tunes then we went to their house and we had 7 people playing music and loads doing set and shean ós dancing and there were possibly a few drinks .. but Irish culture in my opinion is the most lively/ fun thing EVER !!!!
You are so right..because the voice you hear in a recording now days is not what you hear in real time. It just goes to show how classy this lady is..This is no ordinary Irish pub..The Irish/Gaelic language is spoken fluently in it..and the owner (who is now deceased) was a famous Gaelic Footballer with his native county...Kerry.
My wife and I spent 10 days in Ireland on vacation 3 years ago. The absolute BEST vacation either of us have ever had. We learned the Irish are a music loving people, and can play/sing with just about anyone. Saw a young lady walk into a pub, talk with the duet playing, and within 5 minutes had the entire bar singing along. Incredible place, Incredible people.
Exactly. My husband is Irish. On our visit to my in laws last year, few hours off the plane trip from Australia, we ducked around to the nearby GAA (sports club) for a drink and within 10 minutes we were being sent rounds from families of his childhood friends or old club members and coaches who’d spotted him. Within 20 minutes, five men with guitars strolled in for a drink and had begun a “session” - playing and singing together. Such a fantastic atmosphere. It’s just how it is there, spontaneous, not pre-planned.
She will perform on the spot, at the drop of a dime, in another country, with only a guitar player, and deliver a fine performance, she is a real treasure.❤
This is wonderful! Dolly is just a sweetie. The Irish love a good tune. Some years ago my sister and her husband, a well-known musician from the area we live in on Vancouver Island (Canada) went on a trip to Ireland. At one pub they got chatting with the fellows there who were providing the musical entertainment and it was revealed that they were down a man so could not do their regular set. My cheeky sister told them they could "borrow my man" and told them how many instruments he could play. So they did. They had a great time, and even let my brother-in-law sing. He ended up teaching them one of the songs HIS band plays all the time. Anyway, they stopped in that town longer than planned because they asked him to come back the next two nights as well - and they tried to pay him but he didn't take it, so they kept the pints flowing, and declared him "honorary band leader".😂 When my sister and her husband had to continue on their journey, and it was determined where their next several stops were, the fellows in the band gave him contacts for some other pubs along the way, and so he ended up playing in at least 3 more places. They had an absolute blast. Ireland is fabulous.
I am English and had a similar experience, I was alone as I was visiting my young son who lived with my ex-wife who had moved to Ireland. I wanted to see what it was like in a real Irish pub. There I was having a beer and got chatting. There were some guys playing and I just happened to mention that I played guitar. A guitar was produced as if out of nowhere and I spent the rest of the evening trying to keep up with the locals and this was not easy. I didn't have to buy a drink for the rest of night and got quite merry. Someone guided me back to the B & B I was staying in as all I could remember was the name of the Landlady. At breakfast the next morning the Landlady had heard all about it. A great nation.
Idk why, I saw the title and thought it was gonna be another bizarre memish video and was waiting some blooper to happen. Oh my surprise! Im almost in tears by that beautiful song and the lovely performance given
Utterly astounding. She can project with a full studio orchestral backing and just as well with an unrehearsed single guitar. She is big time but HAS NO big time. And WHAT a guitarist! His impromptu accompaniment sounded like he'd done a rehearsal session earlier in the day. One very capable and experienced working musician. Sorry I can't give it more than one thumbs-up!
That's Steve cooney. He is indeed a great guitarist. There's a lot of great pub musicians in Ireland. And when you do make it, as he did playing trad, the scene's small enough you'll probably be playing occasional gigs in pubs anyway. Unless you're just continually touring abroad. When it comes to tunes and ballads anyway. I've seen the likes of Andy Irvine and Donal lunny in pubs. Or Frankie Gavin or alec Finn. Big names, but they'll still take the odd small gig. Or maybe they'll just drop in for the craic if there's a session on anyway.
Although that looked completely off the cuff, she looked in full make up, guitarist knew what he was doing and a nice camera to film it. Nevertheless, the small setting with no gimmicks or effects is a setting every musician big or small should be able to perform in. Sadly not many can.
True. I'm not a country music fan, but I do appreciate Dolly has abundant talents. Enough that, you know, I'm watching a video with her in it, even though this ain't really my scene.
This has got to be the finest impromptu performance I ever saw; it’s the combination of Dolly’s immaculate rendition with that of Guitarist Steve Cooney - Dolly clearly has no idea who he is but no matter his accompaniment is superb. Thanks so much for posting. UA-cam at its best.
Imagine a person being on vacation and being asked, “Hey, can you come in and do some work today?”, and for that person to be smiling and happy and enjoys to do their work! What a fantastic moment to see captured on film! Thank you for this!
@@cameroncooper4175 it would have cost nothing for him to smile. I wonder if he told a tale of when some woman called Dolly got up and sang a song in the local bar and he was wanting the next act to star?
I was stationed in Alaska forty years ago. One day at work a friend told me I should have been at The Pines the night before. He said Hank Williams Jr. was up doing some hunting and he had stopped in. The band invited him up and he played a whole set.
She actually bought "dollywood" (her amusement park in Tenn.)so that area would have jobs. Now that's thinking about others, then making it happen. WOW
I know someone who works directly for her. I have been to her studio in Nashville. She is genuine and humble. She is a woman of faith. She provided me with an autographed picture for another friend of mine who has a special needs daughter with Rhetts syndrome ( a form of autism) that was a fan of hers. The girl couldn’t talk but loved Dolly’s music and the CD she also was given. I like her humor and she seems down to earth to me. I wish more so called celebrities would be more like her.
impromptu, one guitar, one PA, unique interpretation, great crowd that sings on key... and better than 99% of the big stars we have now. there are no words
Love her soul. The audience call for more. She says " I don't know any other ones." She recognizes it's their night. She doesn't want to steal the evening. Kindness never gets old.
Apparently that was Steve Cooney. A well renowned Irish musician around those parts He was proud to be playing along side Ms Parton but he was no slouch! She's always been a humble and gracious performer!
Standing just to her right was another famous person, and I think owner of the pub, was Paudie O'Shea, multiple Kerry All-Ireland football winner and a star i his own right. I think he was star struck by her too!
This was in Paídi Ó Sé’s pub in Ceann Trá (Ventry), Co. Kerry, Ireland. Steven Cooney, originally from Australia, is a superb musician and is one half of the celebrated duo, Begley and Cooney; I'm assuming the Seamus Dolly speaks to at the beginning of the clip is Seamus Begly, a superb accordionist with a very distinctive playing style, alas we don't get to hear him here. Steve Cooney is widely regarded as one of the best trad Irish guitarist, and is widely sought after by the top musicians to do session work, he is very used to rubbing shoulders with famous musicians. At 3:38 the man to Dolly's right is Paídi Ó Sé, the proprietor of the establishment, and who is famous in his own right, having won the All Ireland Gaelic Football Championship eight times as a player, and twice as a manager. There is an extended clip of this in which Paídi introduces Dolly (first in Irish, and then in English) and presents her with his football jersey which he wore when he captained Kerry to victory in 1985.

Youngest of eight kids and our dad passed away from cancer when I was in third grade. He was of Irish descent and had the gift of gab, and a man's man yet full of affection. My mom, who is now passed, made sure we understood how much he loved each of us with all his heart. It amazes me how she kept our family going the way she did and feel part of the reason was my dad's spirit supported us along the way. She was the model of grace and dignity, and she didn't wallow in his loss. She spoke with intense gratitude when telling stories about him. Growing up it was clear we didn't have allot of money - e.g. going to school with patches on our jeans to make them last a little bit longer. But I felt rich in spirit and surrounded by love. Astonished to see negative comments. This lady is a giant in the world of country and western music and she was good enough to perform for a small group of people whilst on vacation. She's been around a long time and in my life I have never seen her play the prima donna or behave as if she's somewhat superior to the rest of us in spite of her unquestionable success and fame. She's probably one of the greatest ambassadors that the US has nowadays. Fair Play to you Dolly. Come back and see us any time!
Beyond country and western, she's a giant period. She also proved right here that music unites us all. Religion or politics can't unite us the way music does. Countries need an anthem and God needs a choir.
Supposedly she wouldn’t sing for them so the owner of the pub Paidi O Shea had to give her one of his jerseys from an all ireland final that he won just so that she would sing one song. Everything has a price.
Fair barter (if true) for such a sweet musical performance, though I am a bit surprised Dolly Parton would value or be particularly persuaded by such a thing.

She is a national treasure and well loved
Dolly is one of the world's greatest treasures. There are guys living in caves in Afghanistan who haven't seen the sun for a decade but they know who Dolly is. Hahahahaha
She's a beautiful woman inside and out. Please be nice to our Dolly, we love her so.

Yes she does, my father lives in Sevierville, and my nephew is going to college completely free thanks to Dolly!
💕💕💕
to this day you can sign your kids up for her monthly book club
She also gave books to so many poor children that she drastically raised the literacy rate in tennessee. And she recently donated a TON to covid research. She’s literally one of the only people on earth I think is deserving of being called a saint. She has done nothing but help people around her. Even people who had wronged her. She still helped them in their times of need. I’m not religious, but I honestly believe she’s the closest thing to jesus we’ve gotten.
Had to include this. With the money this lovely lass makes, she gives it back to our young children, the next generation via The Imagination Library. Free age appropriate books monthly to children from birth to 5 yrs in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland. Any caregiver can apply and receive said books in record time.
Would love to see other wealthy celebrities follow in her footsteps.
It shows clearly how incredible her voice is to sing like that with a single guitar played by a guy she never met. She is a gift to humanity in many ways.

Dolly Parton is authentically Dolly
A great singer, and a great songwriter!
Her voice is amazing perfectly in tune and she's always ultra Professional , very few singers can just step up and sing and sound like they do in a studio live
And theres Dolly Parton. Belting out a song about her family and thr Bible. For proud Irish who love her. Shes a blessing to this world. Praise God.
It just goes to show how humble Dolly is, that she would be on a vacation in Ireland, and requested if she would sing a quick song, that she wouldn't refuse. She is one of a kind.
But it’s because the Irish expect her to be Like that because they are
One advice from a non Irish: If you visit a pub somewhere in Ireland you better have your repertoire ready, no matter if you are famous or unknown and no matter if you are a good or bad musician.
No editing. No auto tune. Just old fashioned talent.
Editing takes time and training and autotune is a fusion of electronic effects and the voice rather than somehow perfecting the natural voice... your gonna piss off 50% of all working musicians with this attitude
@@guscox9651 Too bad. He made an honest comment. So the other 50% of working musicians agree with him on this.

She was home from home. Kindred spirits.
Steve looks like he's in Heaven :-)
Pretty sure she didn't need no microphone. She had massive lungs
I thought that’s what singing was
Singing with a microphone?

We learned the Irish are a music loving people, and can play/sing with just about anyone. Saw a young lady walk into a pub, talk with the duet playing, and within 5 minutes had the entire bar singing along. Incredible place, Incredible people.
Glad you enjoyed yourself, hope you come back again to visit us.... Greetings from the South of Ireland. 🍀🇮🇪🍺🍻

Anyway, they stopped in that town longer than planned because they asked him to come back the next two nights as well - and they tried to pay him but he didn't take it, so they kept the pints flowing, and declared him "honorary band leader".😂
When my sister and her husband had to continue on their journey, and it was determined where their next several stops were, the fellows in the band gave him contacts for some other pubs along the way, and so he ended up playing in at least 3 more places. They had an absolute blast.
Ireland is fabulous.
lovely story & yes, agree that Ireland is indeed fabulous!

One half of "Begley & Cooney"
Thanks for clarifying that. It seemed from other comments that Steven Cooney was known in his own right but l had no idea why.

That was the foundation my wife (who happens to be all Irish :) and I built a wonderful life together and raised three amazing children who all know they are loved deeply by us, and that we appreciate them for who they are. They've grown into strong independent young adults who are well-balanced and have solid moral compasses, and they are now starting families of their own. I have not been perfect - who is - but know my parents are proud of the man I became and the husband and father I am. I am grateful for their example and in some ways glad I didn't "have much" growing up. God Bless Dolly and the Irish - in all of us!
This is a beautiful comment - I have tears running down my cheeks! It sounds like both your parents and you did a great job! 🙏🏻 Much love from England. 🤗
When I was in elementary and middle school my grandmother and mother made all my clothes and everyone made fun of me I know how Dolly felt because I loved what they made for me. My mother loved Dolly and she made a skirt with different color strips of fabric that somewhat matched for me and herself.
I know how you and Dolly both felt because my Mom made some of my clothes and her best friend Rose, who was touring with us,made my other things. I would also be one of those who got made fun of in school because I wore hand made jeans, shirts and dresses. They may not have been as fine as store bought, but I liked em just fine. I was also always the new kid in school. We toured the entire Western half of the US,and I would only make half the semester and we'd be off again to another town. No home base,no friends.
All a long time ago,.......

I'm not a big Country fan, but that's a proper good jam session right there. Great job by the guitarist. And Dolly... 100% class, such a talented yet humble soul.
Wonderful clip, thanks for sharing it.
Edit: listening again and heard her say "I don't know another one..." at the end. Gracefully trying to get out of singing all night because she wants to go back to her friends. Lovely.
That guitarist had some skills... Up the Irish!
He is a very renowned Australian/Irish musician both in his own right and as a collaborator with famous artists...and was briefly married to Sinead O'Connor too ;)
Google "Begley & Cooney" - he's pretty famous in his own right.
Thank you! I look forward to the investigation 🙂

i once met a bloke who had worked with Dolly on a few concerts . he said "im not a religious man at all, but if there was a second coming , its a woman and she's here already ''
Slinky cowboy - I'm an old man who blessedly does not feel old . I grew up in an America that frequently hated me because of my skin color . That was during the 1950's when America was totally different . It was a time when local laws were so strict that there were no stores open on Sundays and no work done except cooking the Sunday meal . But, as the song says: that was "long long ago". I now live in a country where God has been placed in exile . A country where corruption and dishonesty are more common than their corollaries . So now, I too, have learned to be skeptical of what I see and hear . The "school of life" taught those things. Thus, when I read your comment about the bloke who used to work with Dolly, I was looking for a choice tidbit that would at last, disclose the "chink in her armor ". But, the bloke's true story showed me that she is a true angel . I was brought instantly to tears as I reminisced of a troubled young country that was, in those times , confused , addled , and hubristic , while simultaneously, being innocent , Constitutionally and Spiritually driven , and FREE …

She adapted her vocal style to compliment their playing style. A wonderful sense of ensemble and a great musician.
She was always friendly, charming and respectful of those around her, never offended. People should study how she behaved. No one dislikes Dolly.
Dolly Parton donated $1 million _OF HER OWN MONEY_ to Moderna to help in their development of a Covid-19 vaccine - before that skank in the W.H. bothered to even THINK of a vaccine, let alone hand out taxpayer's money to any pharmaceutical companies. Dolly is a woman who embodies a gentle kindness and compassion that is fading.
In April 2020 Dolly donated 1M to Covid-19 research. Her amusement park was about to remain closed for the 2020 season but that didn't stop Dolly's generosity.

i know many who would do it but the "stars" are very different here in Sweden my favorite band was on their way to a gig and had to stop and full up the tank so they had a little mini acoustic concert outside of the gas station. just one of many examples they are internationally unknown but they had people from Sabaton playing on their songs and they been on Sabatons live gigs

Beyond country and western, she's a giant period. She also proved right here that music unites us all. Religion or politics can't unite us the way music does. Countries need an anthem and God needs a choir.
Those people were really lucky for Dolly to sing for them. It's one of my favorite songs from her. It's just beautiful.
She seems really humble and gracious.
Yes, she actually is. She's very special.
