  • What is dyscalculia? Watch this video to learn more about this specific learning difference, common dyscalculia symptoms, and evaluation options.
Hear from Daniel Ansari, PhD, Professor and Development Cognitive Neuroscientist at Western University, as he explains dyscalculia in kids. “It is often diagnosed when children struggle in school. When they struggle with addition, subtraction, basic math concepts”, says Dr. Ansari. Kids with dyscalculia may struggle with which of two numbers is larger, for example.
Dr. Ansari describes a scenario where a group of six apples and a group of three oranges. Kids with dyscalculia may find it more to difficult to determine what group is larger than their peers, according to Dr. Ansari. Dyscalculia may sometimes be called “math dyslexia.”
Watch as Dr. Ansari discusses the challenges kids with dyscalculia may face and common dyscalculia symptoms.

I struggle with percent, money, and fractions too. And when math tests came I wouldn’t remember anything. I excelled in all other subjects and literally always cried and struggled in math 😭if anyone is feeling this you aren’t alone I understand how it feels to have boiling frustration and tears from just doing math 😭

YES,YES, YES. I want to go to college but I'm so convinced that an obligatory math class is going to be the end of any dreams I have.

I feel you. Most people don't understand. They just bully you for it. I was even kicked out of class by my special ed math teacher because i didn't understand her lesson. I even took notes. But something wasn't clicking. I was in tears when she kicked me out of her class. It happened on more than 1 occasion. 😞

Same! My mind would blank out and I would just feel stuck, then start stressing when I look around and everyone would be breezing through the work, and I’m still on number 2 of the test. Then ppl start flipping their papers over and I would stress out even more and sweat, feeling dumb. I was always the last one to finish, and sometimes I didn’t finish and time was up!

wish someone would talk about how this plays out for older kids. my child has a dyscalculia diagnosis but has no problems with anything talked about in the video. however, we hit huge problems once we got to memorizing multiplication facts, figuring out decimals, percents, fractions, and memorizing formulas. ps.. she completely understands advanced math concepts, just the calculating/ remembering that is challenging

I think there are varying degrees of dyscalculia.
I don't think I'll struggle with fraction, percents, multiplication with enough dedicated practice
But once they introduce the variables, formulas and stuff that's where I hit a huge wall of numbers and letters just strung by "+" or "-" and they just mash together in my mind in some desperate frantic attempt to find the value of "x" or "y" or whatever abritary number thrown at me.
It sucks because I really like science and wanted to do some kind of engineering

You should also speak to how this can manifest in other, non-mathematics related ways as well. For example, spacial relationships - deciphering left & right, telling time on an analog clock, reading maps. Something I struggle with as an adult with dyscalculia is reading numbers out loud: identifying how to read a number with many commas. The "greater than" and "less than" symbols were a huge point of confusion for me. I talk about dyscalculia as a difficulty understanding "number relationships," with resonates with me.

Hello Gianna Sollitto, Thanks for your suggestion. We will pass it on to the editorial team. You are correct that dyscalculia can affect many different things beyond just math. Thanks for your comment.

I feel like there's gotta be a spectrum for this. What about all the people who understand mathematical notation and quantity perfectly well, but struggle significantly more with things like basic arithmetic, let alone solving more advanced problems?

I'm happy for this conversation (which didn't exist when I was a child) but it's very, very important to explain that it goes way beyond numbers and mathematics.
A kid can be extremely bad at math but not be dyscalculiac.
Can they read an analogue clock easily? Do they still use their fingers to count? Can they follow written instructions (for boardgames etc)? Do they grasp verbal instructions quickly and easily? Are they easily able to spot the difference between things? Can they complete a basic task in clear order of sequence? Can they memorize basic information? Do they regularly overestimate or underestimate? Do they space out of conversation, giving a blank 'I don't understand' look? Can they follow the rules in sport? Do they have the ability to gauge time periods eg. how long their school term break lasts? Are they able to plan something? Can they easily learn the theory of something i.e music theory when learning an instrument. Are they forgetful of important things? Do they cry, get highly stressed or depressed when dealing with numbers/math? Do they ever get completely lost when trying to follow the plot of a movie? Do they forget what they've learned quickly? Do they completely grasp a subject only to later forget every single detail and you have to start from scratch again?
There's so much to dyscalculia. It's not just bad at math. It's like a type of mental block that won't shift. It's like those times when you know someone's name but it just won't come to mind. You get a block. That's what it's like all the time for dyscalculiacs.

I am very bright and a fast learner. I will never get into university because of their obsession of wanting a good Math GCSE.
In my opinion, universities are discriminating in a way that should be illegal. It's not fair and they are damaging people's lives.

I have dyscalculia and I’m 27 now. It’s something that you learn to adapt to, so my maths skills are mainly struggling with memorising and associating mathematical problems with language like mean, median, mode and range as well as multiplications and mental maths as well as being able to tell the time on any clocks .
I honestly don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have my calculator!!! Despite any maths teacher telling you to never use a calculator and to be better at mental arrhythmia, I just can’t remember it or I get lost in my own maths and then I blank! In the real world, no one actually cares 😆 I was working as an auxiliary nurse for 6 years then moved into operating theatres where I can write numbers down, use a calculator and ask for the answers to questions before I get lost. I wish I was told at 15 that just because you couldn’t do something, or that you needed extra help with your maths, that it really doesn’t matter once exams are over. We adapt!

I have discalculia and every day at school I get support in class, sometimes my supporter would take me out of class or have me at lunch time to have a 1 on 1 session. It did help a lot (kind of).
    Exams/assessments:
When I have exams, my teacher would give me extra time, the average time for an assessment is 45 minutes. My teacher would give me 25% extra time.
That means the teacher would take me out of class and do my assessment with her (taking the 25% I have).
    Maths class:
In class, I am in the lowest group. Maths class is separated into 3 groups. The low group, the medium group and the high group.
Now, everysingle class is doing the same exact thing (lessons) but my class is going a but slower.

I'm 52 years old and I'm struggling with mathematics all through school, I'd always hated math because of the teacher's were teaching, they've gotten frustrated, and irritated, I'm struggling with money, percentages, and fractions as well. I'd felt alone because I was scared to ask for help and I'd really cried because it was very challenging for me. I really do understand how frustrating it really is.

I do not have trouble with yhe things you mentioned but the numbers keep jumping around in my head and get mixed- up. I can' t hold the numbers or number places in my mind at all. Percentages, fractions, decimals are a nightmare. So are word problems even though Ive never had ttouble reading; its the numbers

So would you also say that if a child needs more than three weeks to understand that minus is not just another form of plus it might have dyscalculia? I used to constantly repeat "Minus means less." and expected to have made things completely clear but she still didnt't get it, this might be a sign? Thank you.

I would attribute myself a dyscalculia affected adult, although I have had passed high school maths tests with incalculable efforts and psychological pressure. I still wonder how I did manage...
Despite my handicap for mathematical calculations , I am fond of physics subject. Yeah, I know it might sound awkward but it is how I am. I can learn foreign languages without attending specific courses but I get stumbled upon mathematics.

I quit community college two times specifically because I have anxiety but also the math courses they take for like low math skill range they make you do the first five chapters with out a calculator. And it drove me to tears. Embarrassment. And so much wasted paper trying to figure out 6X7.
I don’t think I have this. I won’t self diagnose. But if it’s possible for other people who struggle like that to find a way around it. I am very interested in finding a way to change my horrific math abilities and my childlike ability to read numbers greater than 99,999. the proper way not just reading the number kS out individually. Although critical thinking exercises, reading, and using a ruler were extremely easy for me to comprehend and do. Can’t spell or remember the proper punctuation unless I’m physically writing down the words.
