If you actually read the scriptures, it is written by Moses himself that the trip from Egypt to Canaan would have taken two weeks. Thus, to say they had no sense of direction is inaccurate. They did have maps back then too you know. They spent 40 years in the wilderness as a form of discipline. Pick up the book and you may actually learn something.

You're right in pointing out that my comment was not to prove that the exodus is historical but to simply correct holy koolaid on his understanding on what was being said in the bible when it said they were in the wilderness for 40 years. I believe there is good reason to trust that the Exodus is historical based off of biblical profecies that have come true and the fact that Jesus himself affirmed biblical Exodus. If God really did raise Jesus from the dead (I have good reason to believe that he did) then I can say based off his authority alone that it was historical.
The story of the exodus is a myth and that's okay. Every culture has myths, epic's, saga's, poems and legends. It appears though that certain groups have a hard time accepting and appreciating that fact.

Not to my reading. The Ahmose 1 Stela describes the extreme weather conditions and rebuilding after the possible eruption of Thera of that time period in the 1630 - 1600 BC. I believe it in on view and not hidden away.

I come from a family that was very, very loosely Christian when I was a child, that gradually became totally Atheist as I got older. This morning, my mother and I heard something the radio discussing what the Jewish holiday of Passover was. I casually let out a comment of "it never happened", and my Mum was quick to tell me that I was wrong because it was one of the true stories in the Bible with lots of historical evidence. She's atheist, but still believes that there's a lot more truth in the Bible than there really is. And she didn't believe me when I protested that there wasn't any evidence other than the Bible itself. So I went and found this video (I've been following the channel for while) and we listened to it together. It was very enlightening for her! Thank you for teaching me this part of Bible history and then teaching my Mum about it too!

A couple years ago i had a talk with a guy who was convinced the bible was true, and when i challenged him to show evidence of Exodus he literally came at me with "they found chariot wheels in the Red Sea" which was a spoof headline from a joke website that somehow made it into creationist circles as actual evidence. He told me he eventually talked to his preacher who in private conversation confessed to him that the Exodus probably did not happen. I asked the guy "how many times from the pulpit did your preacher rely this information to his congregation?" to which of course the answer was "not once".
Cuz if they tell the truth, the collection plate money might be reduced. Sigh. How odd it must feel to be in the business promoting integrity and yet.... also claim that some things are just "too true" to share with the masses because they won't understand. Unfortunately that seems very unlikely since they are now dominantly having an Islamic-based culture. Same with the Turkic people. I love their Ancient Culture before most of them choosed Islam; they were Tengrists and Buddists and some of their culture was similiar to today's Tibetian culture; in modern world there are only about 5 or so Turkic groups who have kinda kept their Ancient Culture but their number is too low... From what I theorize from this video is that when Egypt conquered the land that will become Israel. Some of those people who stayed there had to make up some stories at some point on why and how they got there and why it was their land. And the narrative changed from a conquest to an exodus. The slaying of the local population stayed the same. Just the cause changed.

The Witnesses don't know much. It's amazing to me how little they know about their own organization, like the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, who do all the Witness-only books? Who are they? Are they scholars? How do they conduct the translations, from what source materials? Witnesses are not encouraged to ask these questions, but when you get out, you find yourself staring to wake up to a crapload of common sense questions that you've been kind of asked not to ask, but every other religion has these entities out front. And as a fellow former Witness, congratulations friend. You've taken the steps to start breaking the indoctrination and there's a brighter, more positive, more engaged would for you to participate in on the other side. Make friends, invest in causes you care snit, build communities on the values you actually have. If you actually read the scriptures, it is written by Moses himself that the trip from Egypt to Canaan would have taken two weeks. Thus, to say they had no sense of direction is inaccurate. They did have maps back then too you know. They spent 40 years in the wilderness as a form of discipline. Pick up the book and you may actually learn something.

I believe there is good reason to trust that the Exodus is historical based off of biblical profecies that have come true and the fact that Jesus himself affirmed biblical Exodus.
If God really did raise Jesus from the dead (I have good reason to believe that he did) then I can say based off his authority alone that it was historical.
The story of the exodus is a myth and that's okay. Every culture has myths, epic's, saga's, poems and legends. It appears though that certain groups have a hard time accepting and appreciating that fact.

I come from a family that was very, very loosely Christian when I was a child, that gradually became totally Atheist as I got older. This morning, my mother and I heard something the radio discussing what the Jewish holiday of Passover was. I casually let out a comment of "it never happened", and my Mum was quick to tell me that I was wrong because it was one of the true stories in the Bible with lots of historical evidence. She's atheist, but still believes that there's a lot more truth in the Bible than there really is. And she didn't believe me when I protested that there wasn't any evidence other than the Bible itself. So I went and found this video (I've been following the channel for while) and we listened to it together. It was very enlightening for her! Thank you for teaching me this part of Bible history and then teaching my Mum about it too!

I know exactly what you mean. Religious beliefs are deep-set and hard to move on from. In the case of me and my mother here however, it wasn't about lingering religios beliefs but more just total mis-information. Like when people say you need to wash chicken before cooking it. That's not true at, but people learn that at some point and then to be told otherwise is shocking. She had been or that some of the Bible stories were true and that this was one of them.
(For anyone curious, please don't wash raw chicken or any other meats. The bacteria is all killed during cooking, and it lives throughout the entire piece of meat rather than just in the surface. If you wash it, all you're doing is spreading the bacteria around and creating a moist environment in which it can proliferate.)

A couple years ago i had a talk with a guy who was convinced the bible was true, and when i challenged him to show evidence of Exodus he literally came at me with "they found chariot wheels in the Red Sea" which was a spoof headline from a joke website that somehow made it into creationist circles as actual evidence. He told me he eventually talked to his preacher who in private conversation confessed to him that the Exodus probably did not happen. I asked the guy "how many times from the pulpit did your preacher rely this information to his congregation?" to which of course the answer was "not once".
At least the preacher isn't a hypocrite.
Cuz if they tell the truth, the collection plate money might be reduced. Sigh. How odd it must feel to be in the business promoting integrity and yet.... also claim that some things are just "too true" to share with the masses because they won't understand. Food for thought, this also used to be the excuse concerning why the Bible or Canon was only allowed to be read by the clergy.

And in the video the priest admits he does not believe everything in the bible to be true. When the atheist asked if the priest relies these thoughts to his congregation he says no, and that they would not be able to digest such information.

He acts like they are not being a Record in Egyptian archives, is this outstanding evidence against the exodus, when this really isn’t surprising, because it was very common in the ancient world for civilizations or nations to just simply not mention the persons name or anything about them if they didn’t like the person, mentioning the persons name was seen as you giving them light. This is not true for everything in ancient history obviously because we have the Bible mention the names of people liking Herod and Nero.

What fascinates me about the Exodus story was how it came about. Where did the myth come from? What inspired it? Was there some Egyptian historical figure the Israelites admired and adopted as one of their own? Is it related to Egypt’s brief dabbling in monotheism? The existence of this crazy story amazes me.

The Witnesses certainly didn't want you living a better life, they needed you preaching to others about a life they probably won't earn. It always angered me listening to my mother going out in "the Service" while simultaneously not being OF service to anyone. That faith has no interest in being exemplars of the ethics they preach.

@@DrVarner I do persue truth objectively. I don't have much time for scholarship and watching youtube is more for entertainment. As far as debunking the Bible I don't see the need to debunk mythology. I find all mythologies interesting, and the history of the sources of these mythologies. This video fits in well with what I already know and is well done.

Not to mention the bible doesn't even have the Pharaoh's name. It just says "Pharaoh".
Especially damning seeing as the Pharaohs were basically living gods. There would be few within a thousand miles who would not recognise a Pharaoh's name. Wouldn't be hard to slip in some facts.... if indeed they had any in the first place.

Actually if the early date for the Exodus (mid 15th century BC) is true it was normal Egyptian scribal procedure not to mention the names of defeated kings. If you read the Torah you'll notice that all kings are mentioned by name except the Pharaohs.

When I was a Southern Baptist churchgoer as a teenager, they would tell us that Moses wrote all of the Pentateuch but that one of his followers jotted down the last few post-Moses'-death chapters. Ironically it was one of the first things that got me to go "wait, based on what evidence?" and started me down the road to disbelief.

I've tried explaining how there's no evidence for any of this and the response I get is: "I don't believe you, you're a liar" followed by, "And any 'proofs' you show me, are also fake. You're either a liar or ignorant, or both." So I mean that's ultimately what I've seen people resort to when pressed. Also, love the choice of the Mel Brooks clip of Moses with the commandments. Well the Hebrews and the Jews were a real culture that existed and they definitely had some kind of influence on a lot of culture or a lot of culture influence to them either way the fact to say that there is no evidence that any of this happened is kind of ridiculous. Perhaps they were geographically incorrect and perhaps just called certain people Egyptian even though they might have not been Egyptian.

Whereas I often explain the nature of the evidence. The problem is one of *attribution* to what do we attribute the things everyone, or nearly everyone, can plainly see? Atheists tend to CREATE a God that probably does not exist because they (atheists) determine the test.

No. It can mean history OF the bible, which is a thing fairly well understood, or history IN the bible, which is about as variable as are the writers that contributed to it.
