"Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally." - Abe Lincoln
This is a very good quote but I would not go quoting Lincoln in regards anti racism. He was a very staunch anti black and anti indigenous racist. He was, in short, a white nationalist.
@@mikahbeebeing a racist does not preclude you from being anti-slavery.
Signed, devil's advocate.
He also has been quoted as saying that if he could have resolved the issue without freeing the slaves, he would have. He did not believe in equality for black people. Unfortunately.
Did you know at 6’4” Abe Lincoln was not only America’s tallest president, but also much shorter than Erika, who is over 11 stories tall.
Liberals are so virtuous. I liked when they set up their snitch lines and forced people to take experimental injections because the government told them to. Also, paper and cloth masks are highly effective against airborne viruses.
Also, that quote about slavery being a loving intimate, healthy relationship? 🤢🤮 I'd like to see him volunteer to be on the slave end of that dynamic! He wouldn't last a day!
As a historian (not of the slave trade in America, though), I have to ask if the "intimate relationship" part is based on the romanticization of sexual relations between masters and the people they enslaved, which were neither consensual nor romantic.
@@elizabethmoore3529it's either that or just the romanticised and entirely incorrect view as slavery as a voluntary thing that black folk *chose* because they wanted to be civilised and it was better than being a free man in the barbarian wasteland of Africa.
Or both, could always be both
His idea of slavery sounds more like BDSM role play, not real slavery. That makes me think he is into things that many who listen to him would call "unchristian".
He wouldn't last a day in a loving, consensual BDSM relationship in any of the roles.
He'd find a way to 🤬 it up, regardless of the agreed upon dynamics.
The "happy slave" narrative that was pushed in "Song of the South"! How disgusting!
Saying you believe in "microevolution" but not "macroevolution" is a lot like saying you believe in centimeters but not kilometers.
Yeah, but have you ever seen a centimeter give birth to an inch? Huh? Have you?😂

Your neighbourhood Kenyan here. I hope you keep working in my country for a long time. I wish I had studied a bio major in uni that would land me in fieldwork around archeology or something like that so maybe I'd meet you irl someday but I had been successfully indoctrinated by my crappy education and belief system to think that evolution is the devil. Thank you for opening my eyes. You and Forrest made me realize how dumb I was when entrenched in the belief system of my religion. I still can't believe how entrenched that belief is in a country with so much evidence but oh well😅
Colonization and missionary work have done immeasurable harm to much of this (literally) Godforsaken planet. 😔
I'm glad you're no longer letting it control you. Good on you, bud.
Be safe bro 🙏 ❤
This is not feasible for everyone, but you can still get involved in archeology fieldwork through volunteering and you can go back to college at any time. Part of my personal philosophy is that age should not stop you from happiness. I was halfway through getting my accounting degree before I switched to biology. It cost money, but I’m overall much happier and passionate for the future.
You clearly weren't dumb when you were entrenched in your religious diseducatiom, because you found the truth and got out. Congratulations, welcome to a far more wondrous Universe.
You weren't dumb, you were indoctrinated. In fact, it takes quite a smart and strong person to break from indoctrination and to be willing to learn new things. As a rabbid anti-theist, I am very pessimistic about people waking up from such a state of mind, but seeing your comment gives me some hope. So thank you for posting this, seriously. 🙂
Hello Erika. Lovely to see you. I was raised a Christian Nationalist, now atheist. Love your content. I graduated high school but flunked out of college, mostly because I did not pass calculus. My parents insisted I take aeronautical engineering. They thought computer science was a passing fad, and that was the field I wanted to be in. I managed to make that my career even though I had no degree. Keep up the good work.
Imagine anyone at any point in the last 50 years thinking computer science was a passing fad.
@@exhumus tbf we are in a situation now where there are more computer scientists than there are job openings and many are getting very little pay for their jobs despite having a degree in the field... The field as a whole also has relatively high turnover rate
@@annaairahala9462 To be fair, a massive industry with an even larger skill pool is also not indicative of a passing fad. The high turnover to me indicates people that thought they were getting into it for money and job security but not for any kind of love or affinity for the field. I'm in my 40s, grew up with computers and am 20 years into my career. But, also, I passed calculus.

It's bad enough that apologists constantly try linking evolution to racism, but on top of that, this one says slavery in the US _wasn't_ racist? Fuck that shit.
Not that apologists don't at least try defending biblical slavery, but this one is so mask off it hurts.

I didn't expect to find the most complete and palpable UA-cam explanation of human evolution and the ancient age of the Earth today.
Wonderful work, Gutsick. I sent this to my YEC mother. I appreciate the openness and kindness you express to their end. Citing faith and the age of the earth as separate is so helpful in sharing this with them. I wouldn't expect any Christian would take a second of their day to watch a video which insults them. So this helps explain the topics to those who'll be open to new information.
Seriously, thank you

I was unfortunately taught from a homeschool curriculum that was heavily influenced by Wilson growing up. Seeing more and more people talking about him in recent years has been surreal. He is a vile person, and though I know he has no remorse or embarrassment for the things he's done, it's good to see more and more people shedding a light on all the harm he has and continues to cause

I kinda think the section from 12:45 - 47:20 should have been its own video. It's a great summary of information, very important to the topics you usually cover, and can stand on its own merit outside of the context of dunking on Doug Wilson. Call it "The History of Creation and Evolution" or something like that.
Very much! Great evidence that the original presupposition was overturned in favour of the current assumptions.
Yes, this video is indeed a brilliant way to explain the origin and evolution of the scientific theory of evolution. Thank you Erica, I will save this.
It's honestly just a really cool video about the history of science and I love those.
I am Catholic and I love your videos. Glad you are about to get your PhD. Getting my degree in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. Arguing with Christian Nationalist is exhausting
Immunology is awesome, the Kurzgesagt book about the immune system really blew my mind and got me considering going into the field.
You cooked so hard on this one. This might be your best video imo. The level of depth and yet having such an extensive sense of pacing really made this more digestible to a more casual person or christian who comes across the video. Seriously, when you got to the end and started talking about part 2 I am hyped for it.

This is good, but you should see her "History of catastrophes" (not sure if that's the exact name). That one has epic production values. Also the domestication of dogs.
Finding out how connected to these CN leaders J.D. Vance is , is terrifying!
Don’t forget so is the current speaker of the house
'Proudly ignorant' is a fair description of too many theists 🙂
To be fair - and GG addressed this - many Christians do accept most science and make it fit in with their "faith" worldview. It's the Young Earth Creationists that really double down on the willful ignorance.
Your resume is wild, the craziest part is that you have time to run a full time UA-cam channel. Congratulations on all your success. Your an inspiration to anyone who doesn't think they have time to do something that is important, but feels like they dont have enough time. Your killing it!!!

As a Christian who accepts Evolution, thank you for the disclaimer and slapping your hands on the ground!
Doug Wilson was raised by an evangelist, and is the perfect example of religious indoctrination. He is walking evidence that religious indoctrination is not only effective, but can be dangerous.
A bit of history. For a couple of centuries it was usual for sons of upper-middle class families to follow a common pattern: the eldest would inherit the estate, others would enter the navy or army, and others would enter the Church of England. This latter would bring with it a home and a relatively stress-free life. Such vicars (etc.) often took on intense hobbies - writers, poets, artists, scientists of all sorts. William Buckland is an example, as might have been Charles Darwin, except that history intervened and he never became a vicar.
So - never assume that such people were any more deeply religious than others of that age.

(Hopefully i will complete the timestamps with future edits)
It's worth mentioning that the reason the eye is 'famously' not irreducibly complex is because it used to be the creationists favorite mic drop evidence of irreducible complexity. And so scientists were like "Hold my beer.", got to work, figured out how each step would be beneficial and matched each step to living organisms (as explained by Erika). And so most 'educated' creationists moved on to other examples...most of which then ALSO got disproven.
Well actually the explanation goes back to Darwin.
@@hedgehog3180 Exactly, he wrote a whole chapter on it, and creationists just quote the opening sentence.
The coffin of creationism is all nail. Genesis can go back to its intended use: as literature.
Genesis BELONGS TO THE JEWS. The Fundagelical Christians need to keep their mouths shut about what it says.
Kinda funny that the several 'Teaching Torahs/Tanakhs" I have in my religious library have footnotes/commentary EXACTLY POINTING OUT THE FACT GENESIS IS LITERATURE as 'official policy' as far as they are concerned.
It's not a coffin; it's a dying animal in the middle of retaliation.

my favorite response to the mouse trap problem is the pitcher plant, nature already did it, and the way it evolved is pretty well known, but the way nature does things is significantly different from the way engineers do things. the pitcher plant evolved since it could live and survive without the ability to catch prey, then evolved it as a secondary source of nutrients, and since became dependent on it, allowing it to survive in it's niche of low nutrient soil. this is actually very similar to the evolution of sex that was mentioned earlier, since there's a period where transitional species can do both sexual and asexual reproduction.
It took me a couple minutes to remember who Doug Wilson is, and, as always, I'm disappointed he exists. But I appreciate you covering him nonetheless. It's important to talk about these shitheads and I very much appreciate your hard work covering this horrid piece of work.

WHooo! More Gutsick Gibbon content to craft to!!!
Creationists cannot help pointing out things as counter arguments that are addressed in the first chapter of On the Origin of Species.
They're things that Darwin researched and covered extensively and used to argue for the conclusion he came to, and then creationists come along and go, "but what about...."
It is odd that people say they want truth, as long as the truth lines up with a book written in the iron age. Truth is the goal. The end.
The part they're talking about is actually bronze age, but yeah
It baffles me how people can rule “by faith” (by coping that when they die there is nothing through lying to themselves) in 2024 with all this easily accessible information. Even if you were brought into religion at a young age, you grow up and become an adult and still just decide to not question it? I hope people come to their senses.
@@mandtgrantnah, the events supposedly happened in the Stone/Bronze Age, but the Pentateuch was written pretty well into the Iron Age, probably being in its more or less current form around 500BCE or so. Likely none of the Hebrew Bible was written in the Bronze Age, maybe some oral traditions are that old but even that seems unlikely to me
@@BobbyHill26You’re right. The only parts of the Hebrew Bible definitely from the Bronze Age are a few parts of Psalms.

As an autodidact my advice is to fact check yourself constantly even if you have formal training or education in a field. The rate of advancement in some fields is constantly falsifying things we accept as given.
Of course.... I could be wrong.
@@BrianStevens-y6hlike calling an archbishop an arc-bishop or putting subtitles saying John Fell (Biship of Oxford) instead of bishop? 😂
Very little of the "science" I was taught in school has turned out to be accurate in the light of further discovery and research. From feathered dinosaurs to the complete debunking of the theory of race by modern genetics to how the electrical fields of eukaryotic cells work, modern scientific results are much more dependable, much more evidence based, and much less crude than what we were taught. There are still way too many assumptions in most scientific fields, but eventually the false assumptions will be replaced by actual facts and the assumptions that turn out to be true will be backed by valid evidence.
So yes, regularly check what you think you know - some of it will turn out to be false, supplanted by better and more careful research results.
@@nycbearff Usually the stuff in school is just a really simplified version of a significantly more complex topic anyway. It's more about giving you to the tools to know the concepts, so that you can later deepen those understandings and maybe even specialise.
@@nycbearff Properly taught, specifically to children through HS, science isn't about what is 'fact', it is about teaching the method of finding best fit explanations for observed phenomena based on evidence and experimentation. If you were taught that X was fact, then you had a bad teacher(s). Science has always been evidence based. I hope you meant to say that it is now informed by 'more evidence' instead of 'more evidence based' which is not the same thing at all.

I saw the thumbnail and got a good laugh, but then I looked down and was shocked when I saw it wasn't a video from The Onion.
I was fortunate to have access to great public schools back in the 60s and 70s. Teachers would haul our butts to the Chicago Field Museum and Museum of Science and Industry. Graduated with degree in nuclear engineering. It's astounding to see the creationist skepticism surrounding radioactive decay and radiometric dating. The nuclear power plants I worked at could not have operated unless radioactive decay mechanism were thoroughly understood and predictable with mathematical models. This spills over to medical radiation therapies, atomic bombs, nuclear submarines, simple smoke detectors, and many other areas where radioactive isotopes are used to our benefit, including the benefit of creationists. We live in an odd world.
And yet there are NASA scientists who claim to be Christian.
I deeply appreciate you shining a light on this topic. The anti-science danger posed in the upcoming election cannot be overstated.
I just want to say that I learned a LOT from this video, and it was so interesting! I couldn't care less about Doug Wilson or creationism, but it was fun to hear about the findings and examples of evolution in a deeper way than I had before. :D

I had the good fortune to learn stratigraphy and the underlying principles of evolution from Dr. A.C. Scott, a palaeobotanist, a devout Christian an a man of intellectual integrity.
The problem lies not with Christians, but with insecure people whose 'beliefs' compensate for a collective inferiority complex of biblical proportions.

Just another Christian chiming in to say if you ever thought that you might never change anyone's mind about things like YEC, you definitely might. Personally, it led me to humanistic Christianity. And that move followed me to being much more liberal, overall. Not every deconstruction project lands in the same place, but it did move me away from a worldview that put benevolent atheists on the wrong side of morality and malignant Christians on the good side.
That Augustine idea that the 7th day is still in progress profoundly affected me.
Didn’t even know that was a possible interpretation.

My natural environment: A hospital, my bed in my home.
I don't seem to do so well outside either of these environments. I'm told that if I try to get anyone to take me somewhere else, I will die. It doesn't keep me from wishing. But holding a kitten is as much of a dream as coming face to face with an australopithecine. Both would be wonderful, and neither will ever happen. Still, I love life, and find it well worth living. I would also like to go to college and study one of the wealth of subjects they have to offer. That is also a dream, but I can try to learn as much as I can, by reading, and by learning from people who have had the fortune to study at university, such as Erika, the Gutsick Gibbon. I don't know that I understand it all, or even a reasonable tiny amount. But I'm trying. I know it makes a lot more sense than most of the world's religions do. Even the hospital holy men don't want anything to do with you if you don't have money, are not related to someone living who has money, and if a lot of your biology doesn't match up with what their ancient books tell them. That's the diference between the holy men and the men of science. That I don't match up with how their books say a person should be is makes me of great interest to them. They want to figure me out biologically, while the holy men just want to ignore my existance.

Thank you so much for referring to centuries as 1600s rather than nth century - that makes it do much easier to switch between specific years and ranges of years, IMO.
This drives me to distraction. Decades are referred to as 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, etc., using the same format to refer to centuries leads to endless confusion just for the sake of making it _seem_ a little simpler.
It's used rarely, but if you say the first decade of the 1900s or the 20th century, you would be referring to the 00s. It's just how the words work.
@Matt_The_Hugenot
I cannot remember having ever come across someone using "1900s" to refer to just the decade unless they were listing decades or specified "the decade of the 1900s".
Do you have examples you could share?
@@Matt_The_Hugenot It seems like it's very rare that someone says 1900s and specifically means 1900-1910. In that very rare scenario they go out of their way to say "the first decade of the 1900s" to avoid the obvious confusion with the period between 1900 and 1999. Or "the early 1900s" works too. When someone says the 18th century I have to stop and verify to myself that they actually mean the 1700s.

PS: Doug Wilson is an existentially more dangerous character than Ham or Hovind ever could be. But I am pretty sure you know this already.
