Thanks to everyone who's pointed out that Chris arranged this one! This pinned comment stands as a correction to me thinking it was Adam 👌 ====== Check out this reaction next! ua-cam.com/video/bs3NAQfVzBk/v-deo.html
Chris is the founder (with Brother Adam) and had enormous energy and talent in forming the musical style, harmonics and never grabbing front and center for being a creating / innovator mindset ... having said that his brother now has done a few arrangements .... where their Producer / Arranger Darren Rust did not - he is great as well. GBjj
When Home Free gives its all to 5-part harmony, they spare nothing. Those dissonances are part of their signature, especially when Adam is singing. In my opinion, their tight harmonies and timing are unsurpassed. You would no doubt enjoy their "Helplessly Hoping" and/or "Do You Hear What I Hear" -- both with phenomenal arrangements. Also, on Chris's channel you'll find his masterful arrangement of "What Child is This".
HOME FREE - DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR. Please! I would love to see your face on that incredible video and performance. Arranged by Adam Rupp and me listening to it six times so I can listen to each member in turn and then the group effort. Hmm... Beautiful.
As was commented in Singoff season 4 when they sang with Jewel in the final performance, they have some Jazz chops. I love how they get those chords to glisten with their perfect intonation.
Love listening to Home Free any time, but LOVE when they have the world's best, incomparable beatboxer sing too so we get the treasure that is their peerless 5-part harmonies❣️🎼🥰🎶♥️ #HomeFree #HomeFreeDoesChristmasBest #AdamRuppSinging
Rob Lunquist is one of the most beautiful tenors I have ever heard. He is also a trained opera singer. Thank you so much for explaining the music theory behind the songs. That is music to my ears as a musician myself.
I acknowledge the talent in Home Free, but as a person who has no real ear for country music, I don't usually listen to them. I'm here today for your reaction, which never disappoints, and more Christmas music, which is a genre of its own. Listening to your analysis of this beautiful arrangement... I may just have to give Home Free another kick at the can. Thank you for broadening my music awareness and appreciation!
Thanks, Kaye! Glad you tuned in 🎶 I have next to no knowledge of country music - have had basically 0 exposure to it - so I just go in with an open mind and see what's what! I'm sure there are many more gems out there, hopefully some of which I'll react to! 🙏
You'll find MANY Home Fries who don't like country music but LOVE Home Free's music. Country is only a small part of what they do. They do all genres: pop, doo wop, rock, folk, opera, blue grass...and their harmonies are bar none.
Chris arranged this one - Adam did Do You Hear. Chris often uses 'less than traditional/ expected' harmonies/progressions, but he said he used The Blenders as an influence for this one. The chords at the end are amazing. Your whole body waits for that resolution.
Oh My God. What an amazing reaction. I learned so much from you. Also, love your 'checky' comment. Your awe of their tight harmonies mirrors mine. They never disappoint and most often amaze. Tim's foundational notes are, as always the very backbone of this group. Their version of Mary Did You Know is just stunning. Please, even if you don't react to it, enjoy it for yourself. Also, let me hook you up with a totally different version of Angels We Have Heard on High --- A Brazilian Metal singer named Dan Vasc. He is a wonder to behold. Please treat yourself to this young man and his enormous talent.
I add my vote for you to check out Dan Vasc. Also Jonathan Young, and The Bass Gang. And of course more of Avi's (PTX's original Bass voice) solo work. I'm enjoying your reactions immensely. 😊
Please add my vote to the list. Dan Vasc. Yes please! He has 3 Christmas songs that are each unique and stunning in their own way. Is it too much to ask for all 3 to get onto next year’s Christmas list? He does one Christmas song per year. Oldest to newest is: Angels We have Heard on High, Adeste Fideles and O Holy Night. If you can only choose two I’d vote for the last two. Thanks for your consideration.
I just love your reactions informative, enjoyable and you make me smile with your reactions to the sounds. Home Free did a beautiful version of this song.
For me this is a cappella at the highest level. The harmony with all those layers is so great. In my opinion, in addition to singing beautifully, you also have to feel each other so well to make it sound like that. At our church they can still learn from it😉.
For another totally different rendition of a traditional carol watch the older, live video of "Joy to the World Hosannah" - i guarantee it's the most original you'll see. Thanks for playing this one & your analysis.
Im sure im the only one to suggest u react to home free “do you hear what i hear”. Take all your preconceived thoughts about that song and trash it lol. I love ur analyses of music def new subsriber🌹
Loving your analyses of #HomeFree and their wonderful harmonies, layering, dynamics, harmonics, etc. Please continue on, you've got so much more to discover just in their Christmas music alone. Can't wait for the next one! Home Free never disappoints!
Now, that type of break-down I can get with (a few others have done very similar!). Typically, a bass doesn't "move" like that (meaning Tim)... but man, so effortlessly. The "Sound" of these guys, the dynamics, never ever ceases to absolutely amaze me ....... and it's been 8+yrs for me. What these guys have is RARE!!! : ) Be Safe
I really enjoy your analysis of their music. I learn a lot about what's going on with what I’ve been enjoying all this time. I’d really love to hear your reaction to their very unusual and complex cover of “Do You Hear What I Hear,” which was arranged by their beatboxer, Adam Rupp and filmed at an Ice Castle in Minnesota.
Thank you very much for your great reaction and analysis to this lovely performance by Home Free! I keep this beautiful song in my heart (the Brazilian version of it) because it reminds of my beloved grandma during our Christmas celebrations among family in the past... very touching! When you mentioned the organ playing comparison I got curious to know what kind of instrument you play and if you plan to share some of your music/playing skill in the future here in the channel... Besides, I’d like to suggest something from Brazil for a possible future reaction: the instrumental composition 'Samba Pro Rapha' by Yamandu Costa (he is one of our greatest current musicians and he created this song to pay homage to Raphael Rabello, who is considered one of all-time best Brazilian classical guitarists). Thanks again! :)
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for your comment - that's nice to hear about what this song reminds you of 🙏 In some of my other vids I've put in little snippets of piano - but that doesn't necessarily prove I can play ;) Currently, I don't plan on sharing any of my music playing and imagine this channel mainly being for reactions/analyses. But things change so who knows! For now, I'm keeping info about me a secret 🤫 Thanks for the recommendation, too. It's immediately caught my eye (I won't say why) and I'd love to react to this asap 🎶

I believe Chris arranged this one. Adam arranged Do You Hear What I Hear, another great song. I love this one. So unexpected and those harmonies are wonderful. It’s one of my favorites. Good one SH! Love your analysis! 😍🥰

"If you can't feel it, you have NO business being in my this room" .... Thank you for bringing back that youthful love of music ❣️
One of the many, many things I love about Home Free is their ability to surprise us with amazing tweaks that can take a song from average to the sublime and they do this consistently. Thank you and wishing you a most wonderful Christmas Season.
Ah, yes. This is quite complex! Older, as Chris Rupp was still part of the group, but how wondrous! Not exactly Christmas or Holiday music, but another song they sing in beautiful 5 part harmony is Brothers in Arms. They somehow manage to make themselves sound like church organs, angels, ethereal beings? Try it as well as Do You Hear What I Hear. Just a small note, though. It is a definitely hard on the heart strings. I do believe we have a Home Fry in the making? I'm going to Sub you to see. Excellent reaction!
Haha thanks for these recommendations and for suggesting I may be on my way to Home Fry-ing 🍟I've only just started with HF so have pretty much their whole catalogue left to explore! Hopefully see you throughout this exploration
I really really enjoy how you explain what they are doing with the beautiful harmonies. I would be curious to see your reaction to Beautiful Star of Bethlehem Home Free and the Oak Ridge Boys and Jeffrey East all sing amazingly together. Thank you for a great and entertaining reaction.
I learn so much from your analyses! While I love music, I am not knowledgeable when it come to theory, and I always have a deeper appreciation of the performance after you have explained the technical aspects of what's happening. Thank you very much for what you do!
You're right, ridiculously good. And, yes, of course this was part of our choir's repertoire also. Nothing like playing with the acoustics in a lovely old Cathedral. [ St David's Cathedral in Hobart Tasmania ] 😊
This was, by far, the wildest harmonic arrangement I’ve probably ever heard. And yet, in my mind it doesn’t cross the line into the Avant Garde genre, it’s just very harmonically complex, so many dissonances 😮. Kudos to the ability to hold their own lines and remain in tune in such tight chords especially while moving. It seems to me they also purposely keep their vibrato to a minimum to accentuate these tight harmonies. I’ll be listening to this piece a number of times to take in and appreciate all these intricacies. Thanks for reacting to this piece! ❤
I love how we can literally see the wheels turning in your head as you watched this. Like every time you catch up with what they are doing, you just get thrown for a loop again 😂
When the dissonance hit at the beginning your face said it all with full truth! I knew that meant you loved it. The harmonies throughout just kind of hold you hostage in anticipation of the final resolving chord. Then you can take a breath and relax. So effective. I can't imagine how difficult it was to unlearn all the old song that we've heard since children in order to learn these complicated chords here. The moment a familiar passage would come up, I would find it challenging to let go of that and dive into the new unfamiliar stuff. A lesson in concentration! Really interesting arrangement and an excellent informative reaction yet again! Thank you.
The emotions shown in the face are things that can't be hidden! It's an interesting point you raise about unlearning the original; when it comes to such arrangements (at least from my experience) I can imagine they're thought of in a different way - as a separate entity to the original version. It's the same song (story), but the harmonic progression/journey (the chapters) are different. The experience of practising and learning it, though, is very different to the experience of hearing it for the first time! Thanks for watching!
Your reactions are fantastic, thank you very much. Home Free is incredible and you do such a great job of explaining WHY they constantly knock my socks off! Please keep going with lots more Home Free analysis. Subscribed.
This reaction is pure gold! I can't help but click on it when it shows up in my feed. If UA-cam gave out awards for best reactions, this would hold 1st place. Thank you!
Do you hear what I hear is by far their best Christmas Song!!! It is, in my opinion, a complete MASTERPIECE!! It was arranged by Adam Rupp… need I say more?
Adoro músicas de Natal e sua reação a harmonia de vozes me emociona, sugiro um cantor Brasileiro que participou do AGT 23,tem uma voz extraordinária, desde já agradeço sua atenção abraços do Brasil 🇧🇷
I love 'disgusting filth' lol! As a preacher's daughter and someone who grew up partially in an actual religious commune (a group known as the Fisherfolk, who earned multiple gold records for their 1970's style folk Christian songs), I have a particular horror of the way hymns can get 'modernized' by people who don't trust their audience to 'get' them any other way (I don't think HF is doing this btw! I bring it up to gripe about the way some folks mess with hymns in a way that doesn't honor them). I come by it honestly-- that group I grew up in was deeply associated with hymn writers, most notably Carl Daw, Jr. who was my literal neighbor! He was a contributor to the Hymnal 1982. I also got to help tune the organ at our home church every year from age 12 onward. I totally agree with your assessment of the organ feel from Tim's line! This version sounds wonderful and is complex and glorious in all the right ways... but it doesn't thrill me. I'm married to a Methodist *and* have all this history with traditional hymns, so I think this is a 'me' problem and likely both an unpopular and rare opinion ;) The complexity of harmonies is superb though, and it's visually pleasing despite the fact that they're seated. I initially pictured them scattered through a congregation singing gloriously surrounded by everyone else with their various musical abilities, hehe. It might just be me missing that descant! In any case, your analysis is thorough and engaging, thanks so much for it!
@@nancyholter5646 Yeah, it's not even really a criticism, it's mostly about my relationship to traditional hymns, heh. It wouldn't have fit into the arrangement anyway! I liken it to someone who can't appreciate a Christmas tree without a star on the top-- plenty of people put angels or some other thing, and they're not 'wrong,' it's just a weird way our associations can ruin good things for us!
Interesting. As far as Austin goes, when you hear him singing 'May Day' he demonstrates he can do either head or chest voice on the high note. He did that to show off that he can do that at will. Thanks.
A song done long ago in this history now some twenty plus years old group ... Chris the FOUNDER, gone seven years now and his brother remaining does the ARRANGING when Darren Rust does not. the same outcome though, SUPERLATIVE SINGING, HARMONIES just this side of Heaven !!! Kudos, Boys ! God bless and keep 'em coming !!!!!!!!!!!!! jj
Great reaction! I particularly like that you show us the interesting chords on the piano. So many reactors just describe chords by “letter names” which doesn’t mean a lot to those of us who may have sung in choirs but never majored in music. I can read a musical score, and have some minor experience in sight-reading, and I have the “ear” for music, but can’t usually describe what’s going on with the harmonies and what makes them special. Subscribed tonight in hopes of hearing more of your great analysis of Home Free and Voiceplay as well.
Thank you, I appreciate it! Unless you have perfect pitch, letter names really won't mean much to most people, so context is vital. I still use the letter names just so it's clear I'm talking about a different chord (e.g. G is different to D), but the context is still the most important thing Please feel free to check out my several previous Home Free reactions (in the first one - Ring of Fire - I include a transcription of the introduction)
You might hate the faces you make, but they're part of what made me subscribe just now! And of course your informative analysis & appreciation of their (filthy) style and talent 😉
It’s very contemporary in parallel with the traditional. Very complex; Chris is known for that. I enjoy it because I know each note is intentional. I felt that they were respectful of the original, even though they took liberties. I so love their harmonies and you seemed intrigued by their harmonies. Thank you for the analysis. I enjoy learning new things about music!
New subber! Excellent reaction! Have you heard Rob and Austin sing Nessun Dorma? It becomes quite obvious that Rob could’ve had quite a successful opera career! ❤ I agree- those dissonant harmonies and melodic layerings and fills are actually HEALING. Those chords have a healing resonance! ❤
Your facial expressions are the best part. Lol! I really enjoy your analyses because there's hardly any that go over their arangements. I find it very interesting because they always have such good arrangements. And yes, Austin does use his falsetto all the time. I don't know why someone would say that but some Home Fries can be very defensive. They have alot of hardcore fans.
I can't help them, my face has a mind of its own when it comes to music 😂 Thanks! I feel that these arrangement need the credit so deserve so I believe my part is explaining some of the bits that make them what they are!
I’ve subscribed since PTX and I really think voctave will blow your mind, also voiceplay is super fun and citizen queen is an all girl acapella group to top off my requests lol let me know if you’d prefer specific videos requested
Loved seeing your face react genuinely to what you were hearing. I can't wait to see you react to more acapella, particularly Voctave (an 11 member group) and more Home Free. And if you havent heard them, Voiceplay also has fun arrangements and an excellent bass singer.
I love this one. At one point in your reaction I thought you were going to hyperventilate. This arrangement will do that to you. Chris has said that it's his favorite of the arrangements he did for Home Free. He does have a video talking about the arrangement and the making of the video on his channel.
Haha me too! And Chris' video came up in my recommended yesterday so I watched it 👍I was surprised at how little detail he goes into re the arrangement itself, but I guess that wasn't the point of the video. Was still very cool to see
I love Home Free and this is some proper proper classical harmony. Now, if you appreciate more sophisticated harmonies, please do a reaction to Take 6's renditions of "Silent Night", "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "Joy To The World", "Sleigh Ride", and "Bless This House". Some solid 6-part harmony.
Good to hear! Ooft, I know a lot of Jacob Collier' stuff already so can't do reactions to them - and as for the analysis, we'd need hours 😅 And I'm certainly not worthy; he's a genius
If you love those juicy harmonies, you have got to review Home Free "Helplessly Hoping". I really like the way you break down the musicality of the performance. Most of the other industry reactors concentrate on the vocal techniques. It is interesting to have an industry professional actually break down the musical syntax and chord structure.
That one's on the list for the future! It's actually right now in an ongoing members' poll for my next Home Free reaction - let's see if it wins Thank you. I believe the music, at its core, is really what determines the overall feel of a piece of music, which is why I like to go into that side of things 🎶
Abraços do Brasil!!🙏🏻💛🙌🏻

I learn so much from your analyses! While I love music, I am not knowledgeable when it come to theory, and I always have a deeper appreciation of the performance after you have explained the technical aspects of what's happening. Thank you very much for what you do!
I truly enjoy your videos because you explain what makes the magic of the music! I've learned a lot about chords and how they work together.
Thank You…for your great reaction…..This one always gives me chills …for how they’ve done this one so Beautifully 🎄💗🎄
MERRY CHRISTMAS 🌲🎄❄️🎄🌲‼️
Merry Christmas!!
These glorious chord choices have a Take Six feel, which I absolutely love (as utilized in Take 6's version of "Star-Spangled Banner," for instance).
You're right, ridiculously good. And, yes, of course this was part of our choir's repertoire also. Nothing like playing with the acoustics in a lovely old Cathedral. [ St David's Cathedral in Hobart Tasmania ] 😊
Love your reactions and your breakdown is so good
Once the Christmas Season is over. I would love to see you react to Home Free's rendition of How Great Thou Art.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll whack it onto my list
This was, by far, the wildest harmonic arrangement I’ve probably ever heard. And yet, in my mind it doesn’t cross the line into the Avant Garde genre, it’s just very harmonically complex, so many dissonances 😮. Kudos to the ability to hold their own lines and remain in tune in such tight chords especially while moving. It seems to me they also purposely keep their vibrato to a minimum to accentuate these tight harmonies. I’ll be listening to this piece a number of times to take in and appreciate all these intricacies. Thanks for reacting to this piece! ❤
It's crazy, isn't it?!
I love how we can literally see the wheels turning in your head as you watched this. Like every time you catch up with what they are doing, you just get thrown for a loop again 😂
Darn complex arrangement 😂 Have been listening to this on repeat all day today, still noticing new little nuances here and there
When the dissonance hit at the beginning your face said it all with full truth!
Subscribed.
Thank you, and welcome!
This reaction is pure gold! I can't help but click on it when it shows up in my feed. If UA-cam gave out awards for best reactions, this would hold 1st place. Thank you!
Haha that’s what it looks like to break my brain 🤯😅
@@SirHairless 😄
This is another beautiful Christmas song. CK out Do You Hear What I Hear, it's amazing.💗💗💗💗
Do you hear what I hear is by far their best Christmas Song!!! It is, in my opinion, a complete MASTERPIECE!! It was arranged by Adam Rupp… need I say more?
10:20 Mary Did You Know? Is simply gorgeous. I love your reactions. New subscriber. ❤
Thank you!
Love your reaction. Same as mine, without all of your musical knowledge of course. 😁
You should check out Voiceplay 😊
Your teaching/commenting is so great. My better understanding of the music only enhances my enjoyment of it. Thank you.
Cheers!
Amazing how much more depth is revealed in their performance by your explanation of what is happening. Terrific.
Thank you! This arrangement, in particular, I was completely fascinated by
@@SirHairless ❤️
Adoro músicas de Natal e sua reação a harmonia de vozes me emociona, sugiro um cantor Brasileiro que participou do AGT 23,tem uma voz extraordinária, desde já agradeço sua atenção abraços do Brasil 🇧🇷
Thank you! I've been recommended him a few times now so he is on my list
Love your reactions, so glad I stumbled across!!
Thanks!
Interesting, I never even missed the descant - and we KNOW that HF can provide a wonderful one if they want to.
@@darsynia the human brain is so weird.
Interesting. As far as Austin goes, when you hear him singing 'May Day' he demonstrates he can do either head or chest voice on the high note. He did that to show off that he can do that at will. Thanks.
Great reaction and analysis! Love your good definition of “disgusting”. lol another reactors says “disgrosting” also meaning it’s really good. Lol
🙏
A song done long ago in this history now some twenty plus years old group ... Chris the FOUNDER, gone seven years now and his brother remaining does the ARRANGING when Darren Rust does not. the same outcome though, SUPERLATIVE SINGING, HARMONIES just this side of Heaven !!! Kudos, Boys ! God bless and keep 'em coming !!!!!!!!!!!!! jj
🙌
G is different to D), but the context is still the most important thing
Please feel free to check out my several previous Home Free reactions (in the first one - Ring of Fire - I include a transcription of the introduction)
Thank you! I've been listening to this on repeat for a couple of days now and the harmonies are SO, SO good. Just wow
New subber! Excellent reaction! Have you heard Rob and Austin sing Nessun Dorma? It becomes quite obvious that Rob could’ve had quite a successful opera career! ❤
I agree- those dissonant harmonies and melodic layerings and fills are actually HEALING. Those chords have a healing resonance! ❤
Thanks and welcome! Not yet, but it's been recommended to me several times now so it is on my list for the future at some point!
Insane
I watch other analyst’s. You gave a different take, one I appreciate. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you 😊 Next Home Free reaction comes out later today!
Both Voctave and Voiceplay are on my radar through multiple recommendations 👍
This is a display of their pitch and control to slot in on changes. What a “filthy” reaction! (In a good way)!😂😂😂
Haha indeed!
I get Real Group vibes from the arrangement. Quite jazzy.
I feel you on that! Word(s) ;)
Your choices in music align with mine. I really like this one from Home Free. Would love to see an analysis of a Jacob Collier song.
Good to hear! Ooft, I know a lot of Jacob Collier' stuff already so can't do reactions to them - and as for the analysis, we'd need hours 😅 And I'm certainly not worthy; he's a genius
@@SirHairless Since you are doing a lot of Christmas songs you could try listening to So Hyang sing O, Holy Night.
Tim, the human pipe organ...
GODS chior on earth. Called a preview. Get ready.
Harmonics everywhere. Argh! And wonderful suspensions…I’d not heard this one before. I agree. It’s filthy. In the best possible way.
Haha it so is!
It's actually right now in an ongoing members' poll for my next Home Free reaction - let's see if it wins
Thank you. I believe the music, at its core, is really what determines the overall feel of a piece of music, which is why I like to go into that side of things 🎶
Abraços do Brasil!!🙏🏻💛🙌🏻

I don't think you were breathing at the end of the song! I wish we could hear what you were 'thinking' at those moments!! Fabulous Comments and expertise!
Not enough time to breathe when witnessing this 😂 I've been listening to it on repeat ALL DAY!
