Control is one of the very few games that actually felt next gen to me and it quite literally has it all... fun gameplay, impressive visuals, great controls, interesting story, addictive worldbuilding. I haven't been so impressed by a game since Crysis.
The FBC and all the OOPs/Altered Items stuff reminded me a lot of that old Syfy show Warehouse 13. Was a fun show and I hope future FBC stories take some more inspiration for more crazy stories.
I usually never bother with lore in video games. I'm here to kill things with guns or swords or both. But with Control? I read everything. Every report. Every item description. Every enemy profile. There's just something about this kind of story that I couldn't put down. I fell in love at first sight and I'm so glad I got the chance to play this game. There's often the question of "If you could go back and experience one game again for the first time, what would it be" and my answer will always be Control.
Couple things that I remember about this game. The ashtray maze sequence was amazing, felt like I was living an action movie! I also remember thinking that the actor for Dr. Darling look familiar and after looking him up, found he played the guy with the knives in Robin Hood Men in Tights!
That took me by surprise as well. The first bit that pops into my mind when I think of that character is when he shaves down an incoming arrow into dust then breaks the 4th wall "Am I good? I'm good"
Fun fact about Finish tango, while the first verse applies heavily to Alan Wake, I feel the second verse after the chorus applies more to Quantum Break! A nice nod to both games, particularly the latter!
Fun fact: the ashtray maze also can be interpreted as a reference to the book house of leaves the house in question being on ash tree lane (I got this thought from the comments on the stupendium song)
28:40 Hedron was a catalyst for the creation of Polaris - it created Polaris and placed her inside of Jesse to help her and Dylan defeat the Not-Mother that escaped from another of the slides. I like to think that Hedron is Polaris' mother.
fun fact, in Alan Wake's American Nightmare, released in 2012, the Old Gods of Asgard song 'Balance Slays the Demon' features a section of backwards talking that specifically references the town of Ordinary and warns of the happenings there. It also features the line: "Beyond the shadow you settle for there is a miracle illuminated" Jesse's favourite Tomas Zane poem.
I remember playing this game just to get the achievements and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The story and lore was confusing at times but the detail was very impressive
No one ever points it out but when you first meet the janitor, the hallway changes positions on the lobby’s wall, 1:33 and loops around itself. It’s subtle but disorienting and everyone gets distracted by the elevator
Yeah, I remember playing through the game for the first time and trying to double back into a wall, realizing that the room had changed! That's when you realize it's going to be a trippy game!
I absolutely love this game. I went into expecting something along the lines of SCP and was blown away with what i found. And the fact it ties in with AW is a cherry on top. Control is a genuinely fun game that allows you to actually feel powerful and a sense of progress with your power.
This game was absolutely fantastic and I love that you covered it finally. There's so many details in this game that you have to go out of your way to find. Like the 2nd floor room in the Transportation area that you have to parkour into through a window that has Alan Wake's typewriter and notes about it. Or the music room at the bottom of the stairs in the main area that played My Dark Disquiet by Poets of the Fall. So much love and care went into this game
I loved Alan Wake, and when they reveal that Control takes place in the same universe, as far as saying that Wake was even a candidate to become Director, it totally blew my mind. Sam Lake is totally crazy, one of the best game writers of his generation.
@@Kirbydreaming oh I did, I'm a huge fan of David Lynch's works and I noticed how much Sam Lake took inspiration from Twin Peaks, which made me love it even more.
@@NekoHibaCosplay Same here buddy, Alan Wake 2 is mind blowing. Such an interesting and scary game. Its nice that Sam Lake was inspired by Lynch/Twin peaks. Control is nice game also, but Alan Wake 2 broke my brain.
On Sankarin tango, the song is actually primarily about all the "heroes" we play as in video games. Chorus talks about how they all very often get beaten down, but must continue soon after with their quest. Meanwhile, First verse is dedicated to Alan Wake, saying how he "mistook an ocean for a lake" and "looks for a path to light, to find his beloved" Second verse is dedicated to Quantum break, while not as 1 to 1 as the first one, it talks about "time shattering into infinity" and "never finding a happy ending"
This was my first Remedy game. I just played it for the first time a few weeks ago. It's a good game. I get some almost Metroidvania vibes from it (which is my favorite genre), but in 3D.
I was wondering how you did 2 videos back to back. Especially ones so different and control being so open to interpretation. Welcome, Gabe, and also damn control makes way more sense now that I can see the themes behind it.
I really slept on this when it came out. A friend of mine begged me to play it, so I bought it played for about hour & never looked back. That was April 2020. Fast forward to Feb 2021 & it's available on PS+, so I add it to my library, didn't play it til I finally decided to play it in June 2021 & I'm so glad I did. I plat'd it in 4 days then went back & plat'd the PS4 version 4 days after that. I still have to finish The Foundation DLC though. Even got my son to finally play it.
Also, in Take Control, another of the backwards message reveals how the Koskela Brothers came up with the symbol of the Cult of the Tree, stating that they were drunk, started seeing double a document from the FBC, giving the double inverted black pyramid It's so cool to have details like this 4 years before AW2 was released 🥹
I remember playing this game years ago and man it was an emotional roller coaster. Something about playing it pissed me off, yet it was hard to put the controller down. The mechanics werent the best and the gameplay felt all over the place. I have a love and hate relationship with this game, but Ill give it credit for the insanity that takes place when you begin this story. Anyway glad you did a video on this!
Alright 1. I want to say thank you he you post amazing content cause you post like you have millions of subs and yet somehow you have 250k which is crazy i have been following forever and I just can't believe that you don't have like million of subs but keep it up people will see how amazing you are. 2. cod ghost is sooo underrated and over hated lmao 😂
oh to experience this game for the first time all over again! this game was just a fun ride! and as a big POTF fan, i got so giddy when i found the secret room where u can hear the song My Dark Disquiet, which has a few references to Control, much like how War's music video is for alan wake! and ofc the alan wake easter eggs x3 easily one of my fave spontaneous gaming buys!
One thing I appreciated about the story was that Jesse didn't stay a reluctant hero for too long. She begins with an attitude of 'I'll do what's necessary but I'm just here to find my brother' to not really wanting to give up being director quite quickly and I think that was a good idea. It gives her a motivation for arriving but reluctant heroes are kinda tired so abandoning it quickly, in a way plausible for her character, made the character more interesting. Also, it took me an embarrassingly long way into the game to realise that when Ahti suggests Jesse is there to interview for janitor's assistant, he isn't making a mistake ... That's just how Ahti sees the Director.
I beat the main story in five days. That is how much I loved it. I mained the Charge form and the starter Grip Form, especially after getting the Eternal Fire Mod for it.
Please do Alan Wake 2 I really loved the narrative and how it’s connected with Control with the FBC being in their own universe. I never played the first game but started the second one. I wouldn’t have known about alan wake 2 if it wasn’t for control
I just finished the main game recently and loved it. Also went in completely blind and was super happy to effectively playing an SCP game since i don't have a PC to play the actual SCP games lol.
31:04 "And Dylan being the one who killed Trench makes him giving himself up to them hit a lot harder." I don't think it was Dylan who killed Trench, but rather the Board firing Trench for letting the Hiss into the Oldest House. Once Trench used the partially burn slide he'd taken from the Ordinary AWE, the Hiss found a much more capable vessel in Dylan and loosed their hold on Trench, but he wasn't completely free either, so the Board fired him. At no time does Dylan pick up the Service Weapon, because to do so would put him in the power of the Board, which he couldn't use unless he submitted to them.
Got this game on ps plus not long ago didn't know much and omg it was one of my games of the year, the nods to twilight zone and the like were the cherry on top
My theory for the motel is its supposed to represent the collective unconscious of the transit point. All the AWE are from a part of our collective unconscious and the motel is no different. Most cultures of a certain size have that, the Chinese and Mongols had waystations on the silk road, medieval Europe had inns along major roads, and modern America has the small motel.
Huh, I suspected Control and Alan Wake 2 occurred at the same time but thinking about it, noticing Ahti's holiday clearly showing Cauldron Lake? Throwing in the stuff about how the FBC can't get in contact with the Oldest House? Yeah, Ahti puts Jesse on the right path and then sneaks off to make sure Saga and Alan have the guidance they need. He's starting to feel a LOT like Hoid from Brandon Sanderson's works. o.o
Got lucky when this game in ultimate edition was free as part of Playstation Plus back in 2021. Definitely a great game, but very weird universe and hard to understand. It wasn't until I played AWE dlc that I learned that its connected to Alan Wake. After going into Alan Wake 2, I start to appreciate more of Remedy's bizarre universe.

Fun fact, the Oldest House's exterior is meant to be the AT&T Long Lines Building, which is a massive, windowless, brutalist building in NYC
Is that a fact or just something you made up?
@@nicolaassteenkamp2152if you googled you'd know. Although the oldest house resembles brutalist architecture, it's not exactly the at&t building
