    This is such a fantastic resource. I’ve been desperate for a clear and concise video tutorial on a FSA and you have nailed it. Can’t wait to try this out on the Sew Over It Erin Skirt. Thank you ladies.

    I loved this video just because I am trying to learn all I can about fit. What I really need for myself is how to fit just the opposite in slacks. I have an almost flat back side from waist to crotch. Thanks for all your videos.

      I'm certain there is something called a flat seat adjustment. Or you can remove darts in the back of your pants/skirts! The grass is always greener on the other side, huh?! :)

    Wow very awesome! I have never tried this... not sure I need it as I think more flat butt for me... but will be great as I teach friends to sew plus good to have more tricks up our sleeve. Thank you

      The opposite of an FSA is a SSA (small seat adjustment), so you might consider that if you find yourself having too much room back there. You could also remove the darts to create a flatter seat.

      Inside the Hem I have done the darts adjusting before with ok results, but may try some of your tricks to see if I can improve in my next pair this weekend?

    I've been waiting for this and it's great. I have a skirt pattern that would flare out and I knew my bum was the cause. thank you!! cant wait to try it out. as for an overhead video suggestion, how about a sway back adjustment? it goes hand in hand for me with my ample derriere.

    • @InsidetheHem
      @InsidetheHem  7 років тому

      That's true. If you need an FSA on pants, you mostly likely need a swayback too. Do you find yourself needing them more with waistbands, tunics, sheath dresses, or what. What do you think would be a good pattern style to feature the alteration?

    That is amazing how much more flattering that skirt with the FSA looks! Wonderful tutorial, do you have the steps for the FSA written down? The overhead camera is a wonderful add to your vlogging capabilities. But maybe in the beginning when you were leading up to the tutorial, it would be nice to see your faces. Then add the tutorial and finish with your faces again. (my 2cents... but I think seeing you adds the personal connection that viewers like.)

      Thanks Debbie! No instructions written, but you can stop and start the video as you go through the steps or take notes! Someone else suggested that with showing ourselves in the beginning and end. I guess we are more lovely to look at than we realize! ;)

    Hello! thanks for the video! I'm not sure if I understand it all though... the measurement difference was 1in around the hips, so horizontal, but when you made the adjustment you added to the length of the CB, pretty much... I see that by moving the top CB piece you do add some room at the back but is it enough? wouldn't you need to spread the pattern horizontally as well?
    I have a narrow waist and very wide hips (36/28/43 more or less) and if I were to add 4 or 5 inches this way I don't even know what it'd look like in the end (which is why i avoid making or wearing pants... never fits anyway). I do wanna try this adjustment though, should I look into it? what else would you thing I should look into in terms of adjustments? thanks for the video!

    • @InsidetheHem
      @InsidetheHem  7 років тому +1

      Hey Steph! Great question! A full seat adjustment is meant for someone that basically has a "bubble butt" (excuse my lack of better terminology). You get this measurement from the hips, but it's not really about how wide your hips are. A person can have very wide hips and a very flat bum. Just like a person can have narrow hips and a "bubble" for a bum. Think J-Lo. I hope this makes better sense now! If you have very wide hips along with needing a full seat adjustment you might want to look into further alterations to accommodate your hips.

    Hi I'm a bit confused about the measurements! So did Abby cut a size 6 in your demo or was it 4 at hips graded to 6? If her hips are 39 inch you would need the garment measurement on the skirt to be 41 inch as there should be a 2 inch allowance based on the pattern? ( difference between actual garment measurement minus the body measurement ). So if it was a size 6 you cut, wouldn't it be a 2 inch adjustment you'd need to do? I'm confused!

    • @InsidetheHem
      @InsidetheHem  7 років тому

      +littlewazzie we cut the 4. You use the size chart to find the waist measurement then the actual garment measurement chart to determine the adjustment amount. No grading in an fsa at all.

    • @littlewazzie
      @littlewazzie 7 років тому

      Thanks for the quick response! Okay so if it's a size 4 and Abby's hip measurement is 39.. (size 4 pattern says it's for size 36 and actual garment size 38 so there is 2 inch of ease), shoudlnt actual garment measurement be 41 and therefore 3 inch seat adjustment? Thanks for your help it's been very helpful!

    • @InsidetheHem
      @InsidetheHem  7 років тому

      +littlewazzie well, it would only be 1.5" fsa if you look at it like that since your only working on half of the skirt. I don't usually worry about intended ease when doing fsa because you're building in room in different places so it's not just straight hip ease. It's like bum ease, too, if that makes sense.

    • @littlewazzie
      @littlewazzie 7 років тому +1

      Oh okay! Think just trying to think too hard with the numbers - like how would a 39 inch bottom fit in exactly 39 inch skirt?! And that's y I find any adjustment so confusing! Thanks for the the tutorial!

    •  6 років тому

      I thought the same thing than littlewazie ^^ I was part of the testers for Chi Town chinos (shorts and pants) and I look at your video because I need a FSA on a skirt this time.
      I don't look at the finished garment measurements but I look at the size chart. For example, I'm size 38 (France ;) ) at the waist and legs. I determine the amount of room to add by subtracting my hips measurement to the hip measurement of size 38. The result is half of the room that I'll add. If I do your technique, I don't need a FSA on the pattern that I'm working on (I'm 99 cm and the finished measurement of the skirt at the hips is 101 cm). But I'm worrying about the ease in this case because the size chart of my pattern calls for a hip measurement of 94cm, which is a huge difference with my 99cm... I'm confused :)
      When I did my technique on Chi Town Chinos, it's true that I had ease. But Chinos are casual, so it's difficult to say if there is extra ease or not...
      So I think I'll make a muslin on size 38 of my skirt, and if I can't seat down without a tragedy, I'll make a little FSA :D
