This is my latest piece for Shawn Petite’s Creative Team and I hope you love it!
I had absolutely no idea where I was going with this one! I knew which stencils I wanted to use but had no idea what I planned to do with them!
I dived straight in and started to build a background, I roughly covered the canvas with a mixture of DecoArt Americana Acrylics, True Blue, Brown Umber and Black Tie and then scratched into the background layer and used a brush and a brayer to add texture.
I then added Champagne Gold to Shawn Petite’s Retro pattern 3 stencil. Next I used a combination of the colours Indian Turquoise, True Blue and Kelly Green to Shawn’s Graphics 1 Mask stencil and the Retro Pattern 1 stencil. I love these stencils!! I still had no idea at this point where I was heading but had so much fun just playing with the stencils and making patterns. I then used Glorious Gold with my stencils to make more patterns and build more layers. I allowed my layers to dry before adding the next layer. I used my brayer, a lid and cardboard tube to add more interest to the background. I was now starting to see that the pattern that I was creating looked a little bit like material so remembering the Shawn Petite Faces 1 Looking Down stencil that I had I wondered if I could create two soul sister girls standing together and use my background as their dress material! In this case I wanted to make my background as busy as possible, filled with layers and layers of pretty patterns.
I positioned and dabbed through the edges of the Faces 1 Looking Down stencil and then added a light mix of Warm White and Indian Turquoise. I then tore out rough dress shapes to use as masks for my girls bodies and then masks for their faces and headdresses. I stuck these down with a low stick spray and then painted around the edges with a mix of True Blue and Black Tie. I then pulled this out from the edges of the masks with a watered down version of the paint and blended it into the background. I wanted the edges of the girls to be defined but for the background pattern to only through in certain areas. I added a bit more Glorious Gold pattern through the Graphics 1 Mask stencil to the ... background where I felt it needed it. Once dry I began working on the girls faces by adding a watery mix of the blues to one side to add shade and adding white to the other side and centre to add highlights. I allowed this to dry thoroughly before dabbing a mix of True Blue and Black Tie through the Faces 1 Looking Down stencil. I then used a watered down version of this colour to add more shading and definition.
I love that I set out with no intention other than to play and have fun but then ended up with a piece that I really enjoyed creating. Hope you have a go at creating your own Soul Sister girls and that you too have a great time playing and creating with Shawn Petite’s stencils.
