This movie makes me feel like I’m a friend of a friend getting dragged along to a dinner party and they started killing each other while I’m sitting in the corner petting the dog

This is exactly what it felt like
@@alephnull423 That's cool, I probably wouldn't go anyway tbh~ (◡‿◡✿)
Just wanted to comment that the cult not making sense shouldn’t be an issue because no cult makes sense.
Uhmmmm... the point is not the intelligence behind the cult that bothers, I think, but how realistic it can be. It's difficult to believe someone would devote themselves to the point of commiting (forced) mass suicide when the cult does not provide what they think they need. The movie gives you ideas about what the cult is about but fails to make it relevant to the plot and characters.
Neko Mata , Oh, you mean similar to the People’s Temple?
@@iamslf I know about Him Jones and his cult but I haven't seen the movie you mention, so I don't know if it's done properly. But yeah... Jonestown is a good example of people buying into a cult and commiting to it to the point of mass (forced) suicide.
So... for the story in The Visit to make sense t they could've shown how their lives changed because of the cult (pattern of speech, avoiding cuss words, dressing modestly, living simply, or having their house covered in art propaganda, etc) and shown their belief and loyalty to their leader for example saying Jim Jones says: blah blah blah, taking him and his word and perfect and law, saying this a LOT, or getting super angry when leader gets insulted. And if they had a conflict of heart in the mass suicide, they could've shown guilt or fear or anxiety during the dinner, have the female cult member have a mini break down in the bathroom and then pull out a photo of the leader or a symbol of the cult as a talisman to calm down. All these things and other ideas can help the audience understand how critical the cult is for them, how unbalanced they are because of the teachings and how close to mass suicide they are getting... so it doesn't feel out of left field. And the couple could've mentioned how they got into it thanks to a friend in the neighborhood, which could explain the other red lanterns in a more believable light.
There's not much "showing" and even less "telling" in this movie... and whatever is shown or told is not enough to make the audience believe what they are seeing, so there's no emotionality involved, no fear for the protagonists, no compassion or hatred towards the cultists, no anxiety over the red lanterns... nothing... a great failure in a movie
💯

The most unrealistic thing about this movie is when that one person leaves no one else does. I feel like everyone knows that once the seal breaks and that one person decides to leave everyone else can take it as their cue to be able to make an excuse and leave lol
Once the first person announces they are leaving, I love saying “Yeah I’m gonna go too, I gotta....(excuse)”😂😂
I would have GTFO at that point.
Not necessarily. The party wasn't "over" in that sense, they didn't even have dinner yet. She left because she was uncomfortable with a game, not a natural "welp, I gotta go pick up my kids thanks for having me" kind of way. That's hardly the *most* unrealistic thing in the movie.
I think that was very realistic. For just her to leave. It was a dinner party and people were getting reunited with everyone. Yes it had gotten weird but people give eachother the benefit of the doubt and I mean they were all close, its not like they were not going to try to understand or make the house guest comfortable and understood. Will was just seeing through the bullshit and was staying cause trauma, protecting his friends, proving a point to his ex and and and so why would he leave? This isnt a "I would've done this" movie, It's a "I was there in the moment movie" which is more honest imo.

@Tiny Neko King depends. Sometimes you can have smart victims but you need a smarter murderer/monster.
I really enjoyed the movie though. It's supposed to be about grief and how the idea of "it will all end soon" can be really soothing to someone who lost the will to live, the boy's death wasn't supposed to be a plot point, but a device for the grief. You can see this movie in many ways among them: about people not accepting their loss; about seemingly happy people harboring immense pain to a breaking point; about how vulnerable people can be while in pain. The why bring innocent people to the murder/suicide party is similar to how people kill their loved ones before killing themselves "in order to protect them". The movie is basically about people avoiding facing their emotions, and how it destroys everyone around them.

This movie isn’t as straight forward as you think it is. when it comes to why they would kill their friends even if they didn’t outwardly come out with some sort of past tragedy. that is foreshadowed at the beginning of the film when will hits the coyote, it’s a mercy killing. To these cult members everyone is suffering rather they believe so or not so they invited all of their closest friends as a mercy killing to go to the other side with them. they thought they were being good friends. And everyone in the neighborhood wouldn’t have to go to Mexico just to be a cult member that doctor had made numerous videos and a lot of the people in the neighborhood could’ve seen those videos and had been brainwashed either by wills ex or other people who had bought into the cult these aren’t crazy leaps to take to enjoy the film you just have to pay more attention
Your comment makes more sense that this video. Whenever he doesn't like the movie, he always butchers the explanation. Thanks for this! ☺
Its great to see this comment.
This is also reiterated by the fact that they intend to kill everyone AND themselves, plus there is a dialogue between David and Eden (?) where she gets cold feet and they talk about free from the pain.
It is also backed up a little by real cults, where people get so convinced that they are following the “right” path and their notions are true, that they commit mass suicides.
This is the exact explanation i also came up with regarding the reasoning behind the cult people actions. This vídeo does not actually explain anything, ONLY describes what happens during the movie...
Adds some perspective of why the coyote scene was key and focused on at the start
so you are happy with the thought that a whole neighbourhood could be easily convinced so murder their close friends "to free them"... And not one of these people to call the cops when they don't want to kill their friends? A lot of logic needs to go out the window for this to work. Yes the coyote scene is neat but the movie falls apart

I don't think that the cult is suppose to make sense. Most cults don't, anyway. Also, with the whole neighborhood having these cultists, I think its very probable that it was a slow spread of the cult's influence. Perhaps the occupants of one household heard about the cult and ventured to mexico. And once they returned, they spread the word. And slowly more and more people are duped into being converted by the cult. The film never implies that this was some kind of over night thing. It's really not that crazy when you think about it.
Yea if you think about the manson family and jonestown those are real things in the real world. Its not that far fetched
They even mention in the start this "doctor's" influence in LA and Newyork which is horrifying because all of this is happening not just in the neighbourhood but over most of LA and NY.
You'd think a cult with rather wealthy members would want to make sure their members are alive
Cult leaders prey on vulnerable people. They isolate them and make them feel dependent on the cult. Considering the ex lost her son, the movie isn't so far fetched.
that is a lot of people in a neighbourhood that are willing to kill their friends, even over 5 years trying to convince them all and not have 1 go to the cops
I really liked this movie. I feel like the plot contrivances brought up are easily explained away. I also feel like if you watch the movie knowing that there is going to be gore you probably won't like it so much. I watched it completely blind, and was intrigued by the plot, never quite sure what was going to happen.
I also really liked the tone, I know from a certain perspective it feels disorganized or like there is a lot of filler stuff that doesn't get used or doesn't make sense, but for me it made it feel more like a realistic gathering. I've never been to a party that wasn't at least a little bit awkward, even among close friends. The dialog and character interactions during the party reminded me a lot of Convergence, another movie I really love.
You speak the truth. I also believe it was supposed to be reminiscent of a realistic gathering. The main priority of the cultists was to have a good time with everyone and then peacefully kill them while covering up the little suspicions of Will.
Obviously, this would lead to generic dinner conversation and anecdotes from the party-goers.
A lot of subjects were “throw at the wall” because the characters were just being people. I enjoyed it.

I liked this movie for multiple reasons but mostly for the way they handled the cult. I kept my mind open and tried to get behind their whole concept on “watching death” and as bizarre as it sounds, I loveeee how subtle the cult members tried to be with it. I love how the movie kind of leads you in between the 2 possibilities that the main character is just losing his shit or these people really are f-ing CREEEEEPY
I got the impression that Eden and David didn't invite Eden's friends because they had grieved over someone they had lost. I thought that inviting and killing all of Eden's closest friends was the only way she would go though with the Invitation in the first place. Think back to the video the group was shown and remember that Dr. Joseph asked the dying woman who she was excited to see. He told her something along the lines of, "You're going to meet them soon." Had Eden gone through the Invitation, none of her close friends would have been dead. Therefore, she couldn't meet them during her transcendence. However, had she died with all of them, she could be with her loved ones in the afterlife. Now, I'm not sure how well this gels with the idea that the whole neighborhood having their own suicide dinner parties, but at least with the main group, I believe this was the motivation for bringing them together.

@@BrokenGodEnt Thank you for not being one of those people who claim that people are too stupid to understand the film, or are just too use to B-horror movies to like this movie.
Same^ I didn’t expect much going into the film and honestly it was WAY better than I expected. I feel like he didn’t like it because it was slow. Anytime I hear anyone talk about the movie negatively it’s about how “slow” it was for them.

I loved this movie... so much tension. Amazing. "Where the **** is Choi!" that scene got me hard.
Made me check how much longer was in the movie when he showed up.
Why.. I didn’t get that at all.. I thought Choi was dead. But he is now.
Bruh my wife and I have been quoting to eachother “where the fuck’s Choi?” And “DONT PATRONIZE ME DAVID!” For like 5 years now lmao
The Circle sounds like a good plot. That's my vote
The guy looks like a long haired and bearded Tom Hardy

Lol he was so much better in Upgrade.
He looks what I imagine Jesus to have looked like.
I used to think Logan Green and Tom Hardy were the same person...

I believe most of the friends met at a grief support group (it’s briefly mentioned near the beginning) and they developed a deeper friendship from there.
As for the the whole neighborhood being involved, it’s not clear how long they’ve been back from Mexico, but they could’ve “recruited” some of their neighbors, but it is mentioned that other people who do not know them were had also “accepted the invitation”, so it’s seems to be more like Scientology is in Hollywood. Not everyone is a part of it, but a surprising amount are! If Scientologists decided to perform this kind of thing, it would have quite a few houses with red lanterns.
Then pertaining to the suicide, that second message from the cult leader sounded as if he had just come to the realization that a mass suicide was in order and the decision of individual members to take their lives was accepted and supported before then.🤷🏻♀️
Over all, I did like the movie. I do want to know what happened to Claire when she decided to leave early and who the people really were who came to the door (the ones David said “were kids looking for a party). Other than that, I think it was pretty well done.
Oh.. and as far as the locks go, there are deadbolts that only have a keyhole on each side and need a key to lock and unlock it… and I believe that back yard had a sheer faced cliff on the other side of the low brick wall, so they couldn’t have gotten out from the back yard.
The Circle seemed pretty cut and dry: Aliens. Even though I liked it, I choose Room.
When I first saw your comment, for a second I thought you meant The Room 😆
@@rosereviews2492 it is named the Room

@Daddy Vladdy ???
In regards to the multiple lanterns in a relatively close proximity, I don’t think they all went to Mexico and moved back to LA like Chris said. It’s more likely ( based on cult behavior) that when Eden and David came back, that they were looking to spread the word of Dr Joseph and found some neighbors who bought into the kool-aid
After hearing for one of the options for the next movie called the room I could not stop thinking of Tommy Wiseau hunting the house
Can we hear your take on "The killing of a sacred deer,". It's on Netflix and it's a very intriguing movie that is left up to the viewer to decide what it means.
I watched that movie last week and I was so lost
Rubbish film
Seems like you’re into artsy fartsy films lol
Tyler Skeen eh those movies/anything really aren’t a lot of people’s cup of tea but they have their worth
Tyler Skeen it's produced by a24 so a lot of their films are gonna be "artsy fartsy" since they're giving chances to smaller creators with great visions to get their name out there. Besides if you actually wanted to dissect the movie you'll see that there's lots of hints that show to different interpretations of what the boy really is or if anything is even real. Plus countless amounts of symbolism with different shots in the film especially the opening scene. Like someone else said, they're not for anyone especially the ones who don't wanna appreciate good film work.
Man chon just showed up and died. If he was late or didn't show he would have lived lol

Wow. It's amazing how two people can see the same movie and have 2 completely different experiences. This movie had me on edge 93% of the time. Partially because of the slow burn. The moment David locks the door...it's like the pilot is lit. When Pruitt follow Claire outside and then he takes her out of sight to "talk", I think I actually whimpered.
I didn't find the conversations asinine. We heard a large imposing socially awkward man confess to killing his wife. There were uncomfortable intrusive kisses. We watched the hosts lovingly play a video of an assisted suicide in a cult ceremony. Crazy stranger chick Sadie is showing Will her bits in a way that should have had a subtitle: "I'm here to make trouble". Then Eden slaps one of her guests for no reason. The underlying vibe, before we even know what's going on, of Eden's constant low level panic that everything hinges on every single moment of the night...but desperately holding on to a smile and lithe movements feels like a pressure cooker full of candlewax, holy water and pig's blood.
OMG the fucking message from Choi about having been at the house an hour ago, but apparently never making it inside. Ah!
Yeah. This was an 8 or 9 on the psychological horror scale. I really liked it.
You know...this group of people, without the tragedy that tore everyone apart, would be a set of healthy, young, beautiful, financially independent professionals living in Beverly Hills having a delightful dinner party with friends and fun...I'm wondering if you not really connecting with the movie is because you feel like maybe wouldn't fit in with that kind of group.

@@dirtbagindistress5545 Exactly, my parents are divorced, but they still care about each other. They always talk about how most people who get divorced or break up think that they have to hate each other, when that's not really the case.
Maybe because they are both adults and she was way more than just his "girlfriend"
I love the way he say the word “ridiculous” 😆 I want him to say it once every video it’s great
I was watching this movie and I'm guessing one boy accidentally hit the son with an aluminum baseball bat? It looked like they were both playing with them pretending they were swords or just hitting them together for whatever reason. Then the boy hit the son (maybe swung it as the son the lowered his bat and couldn't stop in time?). Thats all could understand for it
I actually really liked this movie. It's a bit more grounded in reality than other home invasion type thrillers. And the chemistry between the cast was really on point. Especially since the movie takes time to show the relationship between Will and each friend which has their own impact on him. And the movie takes a great dive into how people deal with grief.
I also like that one of the random side characters also survives. You rarely see that in these kinds of movies
Kian Zinzell I was rooting for the gay guys the whole time, they seemed like cool dudes and I liked their characters more than the majority of the cast.
Chillzey How is anything in any horror movie realistic to that extent? The realism is never about the overall plot- it’s the responses, the chemistry, the build up, the atmosphere and the characters behaviors and flaws as well as strengths and weaknesses. Many movies fail to keep the characters realistic or relatable.
The room sounds like a more interesting movie to talk about. I believe that it may be a more liked movie to talk about, thus I believe the room should be covered first.
The only thing I remember about this movie is my mom showing it to me and about five minutes in, I was like, “oh, haha, she’s in a cult” being all sarcastic, and my mom was like, “you’ve seen this movie before?” And I didn’t really process what she meant, just saying “No?” And to this day I’m way too proud that I called it, I’m sorry
You watch enough TV you know a cult when you see one.
I mean it was pretty obvious. They really weren't subtle with it.
Don't pat yourself on the back too much...its pretty obvious and my 12yr old knew what it was pretty early in the movie
Lol that happens with me all the time as I’m sure it does with other people it isn’t like you solved the hardest of algebraic equations.. figuring out it was most likely gonna be a cult. If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck it’s probably a duck bruh
I really liked it. Will only showed up out of guilt, so the whole night was just hella awkward for him.
"Why wouldn't you be able to unlock a door from the inside?" At my old condo, the doors actually needed a key to lock and unlock from both sides. When we had lost all but one key, if someone locked the door while leaving then everyone inside was simply locked in. Of course, a few minutes with a screwdriver to take apart the lock worked, but a man with a gun running around shooting people would make that kinda hard to pull off.
I think you might have been living in a murder house if that’s the case.
@@jonjonjonjonjonjonjon nah, theyre kinda common in some places (i think Europe?), my moms house is older in the US & has one. Theyre apparently called double cylinder deadbolts and in the US are illegal in some states because if the key is removed you could die in a fire
Most of the houses that I've lived in have had doors that you need a key to unlock from inside. When I've lived in more modern, expensive places they've sometimes had doors than unlock automatically from the inside but in my normal houses and flats I've needed a key. I do live in Europe if that helps.
This is actually established in an earlier shot. Showing that the doors have a key hole on both sides.
Wow, I had no idea that it can be a strange concept for some people.
I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed the circle. It’s not an amazing film but it’s good for what it is, a movie with no background and very little plot. I would love an explanation though!

I swear, the whole time I said "omg just leave." I knew it was over when the guy from Gothika appeared. The weird girl gave away most it. But yeah. I agree. Weird slow dysfunctional burn.

Thank you for that review! I agree with everything you said, other reviews that I saw were like this movie is awesome but I think the movie was so obvious. The couple who invited their friends were so suspicious all the time and the "twists" were expected like the moment Eden kills herself or that the wine that was served at the dinner would be poisonous (the wine and the drugs had so much foreshadowing). However the protagonist had the more natural way of grieving about his son!
thanks for reciting the movie line by line and naming it an explanation
