This movie reminds me of an "Am I the asshole?" post where this guy who has schizophrenia and his gf got into it because she hid his medication, and she waited until he had a full on panic induced tearful breakdown to say that she hid them as a prank. She then had the audacity to play victim when he yelled at her for doing it, I think it took him like an hr of searching before it got to that point. She kept telling him that she didn't know he couldn't handle a joke. The kicker is, it was the bf who made the "Am I the asshole?" post.

His kids were going through grief over their mother's suicide which traumatized them and only 6 months in he's talking about marrying his new piece? They made it clear that they didn't want to be stuck with his girlfriend and they had strong negative feelings toward her and instead of putting their feelings first (and giving them more time) he insists they go on a trip with him and his girlfriend to the log cabin they used to go to with their mother. The icing on the cake he leaves them alone with a woman they hate and has mental illness. And he gives her access to the gun safe. Genius! 1) You missed the detail of Aidan drugging Grace's drink. That's how the kids managed to hide all the stuff without her waking up.
And yes, they did plan all of it from the very beginning. There is a scene of them sitting in front of the dollhouse and quietly talking before the travel to the cabin, they were clearly discussing their plan back then. And Aidan is also shown to pack up some climbing equipment, that how he managed to fake his hanging later on.
    2) Grace didn't shoot Richard because she got angry with him for not listening or whatever. She tried to persuade him that he's already dead and was sure nothing would actually happen - you also didn't mention the fact that she tried to shoot herself first, but the gun misfired.
By the way, it's so interesting that every character in the family dies or is about to die from a gunshot. I mean, the filmmakers could choose a different form of suicide for Laura, but they chose the gun. It makes all the deaths feel like one long connected tragedy, like it was somehow Grace's inescapable fate to destroy the whole family.
    3) I must say, I have some questions to this characters. The dad's decision to leave is stupid on multiple levels. I mean, the trip to the cabin takes 5-6 hours, if the roads are clean. So, his plan was to drive 5-6 hours to the cabin, then, the very next day, 5-6 hours back home, then, in a few days, 5-6 hours back to the cabin, and then, after Christmas, 5-6 more hours back home? I know that people in US have a thing for cars and driving, but isn't that exhausting?
And the kids decisions are stupid too. I'm not even talking about the whole gaslighting idea, but why don't they stop the whole thing after Grace becomes physically dangerous, hitting Mia? That's the moment they should've realized they are stuck with a crazy lady, who NEEDS her medication. And why didn't they steal the gun from her even after they had seen it?
Also, they are worried that she will freeze to death when she seats outside for too long, and that's what makes them tell her the truth. But why didn't they do it when she decided to walk to a town, wearing no outer clothing but a blanket? She totally could have died at that point.
Also, after they realize she's dangerous, why do they hide in the attic that has no locking door? Their room has one, and the basement has this secret area where they hid all the stuff, why not go there?
And please don't say they're just kids. According to the obituary, Aidan is 17. He should have known better.

I still had my mother and I'd have done anything to make the other woman miserable. If I had lost her, well, Aiden and Mia would seem kind by comparison of the actions I'd have taken.

Hating a new member of the family, especially the replacement for a recently deceased mom, makes a lot of sense, but the kids in this movie go far enough that I think it’s basically comeuppance. He knew that the kids blamed the girlfriend for their mom taking her own life. We gotta remember theyre kids - that said they aren’t going to understand things as an adult would. That said, neither the kids or Grace were in the right mental state to be left ALONE in a lodge in the middle of nowhere.

    • @insertname7325
      @insertname7325 2 роки тому +21

Actually, the argument of "they're kids" doesn't hold up since children can learn right from wrong at the age of five and onwards, and can understand concepts such as death, torture, and abuse, and the implications of what they entail. While the father shouldn't have left all three together, it's ultimately the fault of the children for going through with their premeditated attempt at causing their step mother to commit suicide.
One of the reasons why we shouldn't underestimate how much children do understand about the seriousness of their actions, is because it does lead to real world nightmares. Such as the Jamie Bulger Killers who at the age of ten, premeditated a kidnapping of a two year old, and then proceeded to sexually torture and finally murder them, only being caught because their attempts at hiding their wrong doings by dumping the body on a train track lead to an investigation. They revealed in later interviews that they fully understood what they did and why they did so, even if one of them was utterly unrepentant of their actions.

I thought something paranormal was happening and that a ghost or demon took their stuff and she turned crazy cause she was not taking her pills anymore so I felt bad for the kids who were caught in all of this and I really was mad that it ended that way. But after finding out that the kids were behind all of this, the ending couldn't have been better they got what they fkn deserved.
She was trying her best to get them to like her and bond with them. And the dog part omg, they actually went too far, she said she always wanted a dog and she got it as a symbol of moving on from her traumatic past so when he died because of the kids she snapped. It also wasn't her fault the mom was emotionally unstable and decided to shoot herself because her husband wanted to get married to someone else. The kids were evil but....

The dad was horrendous. It is very possible even his first wife was a patient of his, so he was making some unethical decisions way before. Explains why the wife killed herself, she clearly had underlying mental health issues even before. The kids come up with a plan to completely manipulate and gaslight Grace to the point they are willing to kill her dog (the living symbol of the progess she's made in life) and Grace finally breaks. They must have picked up their sociopathic tendencies from dad! He definitely is the origin of this chaos in a way for sure

They researched Grace on her fathers computer. Don’t you think they would’ve known their mother, who they were fervently obsessed with was a part of his books? If that was important, don’t you think there would’ve been a single line in the film to indicate that?

Hereditary was terrifying and bleak and deeply disturbing, but this movie is the very definition of tragedy: everything that happens could have been avoided, but the characters curse themselves at every turn. I actually really like that they decided to flip the assumption on its head and do a opposite of the sixth sense trope with it turning out the whole movie was just a big PSA as to why tormenting people with their past trauma is a horrible and sadistic idea that can harm a lot of people even those not involved, without going overboard and breaking away from its core story and characters

I swear the mother's suicide is still the most shocking part to me.
Not only did it happen scarily quick but it was terrifyingly loud in the theatre when I went to see it. Don't know if it was just my theater or if it's the movie but the sound design really gets to you.
Next to that, the psychological horrors really make you think it's all supernatural.
Those kids though are little shits and the Dad did kinda deserve it once I saw the dog, no sympathy for those little demons.

Because The Others is a English version of a Spanish gothic tale, it's the 1st film that is English spoken to ever win a Goya Award. In fact the film has 7 Goya Awards (Spain's national film awards). It's won 3 Saturn Awards. It was also nominated for 1 Golden Globe award and 2 BAFTA awards. It also grossed over $200 million at the box office on a $17 million budget. A remake is already in the works. But yeah, "it hasn't gotten much attention".

What absolutely awful kids. She was trying her best to get the kids to like her, trying her best to start a new life and be a good person. They should have returned the meds the minute she said she needed them. Gaslighting a survivor like that is the lowest of the low. They got what was coming to them and they deserved their fate.
