  • And they told us steam was dead...
50 years on from what many people considered "The End" for steam in the UK, we can proudly say it is still thriving around the country, both on the mainline and on heritage railways thanks to the millions of man-hours put in by paid and volunteer staff.
To commemorate "The Last Day", there were 3 steam railtours running in the north of England on the 11th August, over both the West Coast Mainline and the Settle and Carlisle.
    These tours were...
-- "The Settle and Carlisle Golden Express" - LNER A4, 60009 "Union of South Africa"
-- The Cumbrian Mountain Express - " LMS Jubilee, 45699 "Galatea"
-- "The Waverley" - LMS Jubilee, 45690 "Leander"
Although all 3 tours were diesel assisted owing to the fire risk (despite torrential rain leading up the day...) there were some spectacular scenes at various locations, and I have tried my best to capture just a few of them.
I hope you enjoy, and here's to another 50 years of steam preservation in the UK.
