One day I will see these running. I grew up on beside the Reading-Tonbridge line at Dorking so the sound of them is beyond familiar. The noise when they're idling at the station is particularly reminiscent. They were quite intimidating beasts when I was a kid in the 70s!! There's definitely something of the valenta about them... 4:45 is a wonderful shot, a fair gradient too.
They sound just like a class 20 chopper when 1 very 1st seen a thumper in the 1980s I couldn't believe these sound they made as they sound nice at power/thrash 🥰😍🤩
Thank you! Thought it best to leave it running, as the sound in my videos is what I pride myself on in particular, and the EE lump just sounded too good to cut out.
Excellent video, thanks for posting. The acceleration from a stand of the 2 car DEMU presumably fitted with Suburban gearing (line speed 75 MPH) 8:40 illustrates how these units improved upon steam for frequency of service. When fitted with Express gearing the line speed became 90 MPH where allowed (although the Hastings units have Express traction motor final drive they are limited to 70 MPH due to being Heritage units).
Ref the comments by other photographers at 12:00 about our train's whistle - yes, it does indeed have a two-tone horn as was subsequently demonstrated. :) But the whistle is more than just a novelty: the SR DEMUs had them when new but they were replaced by the two-tone horns early in the units' lives. We sourced some ex-LU whistles to refit to our motor coaches.
Used to see these "Thumpers" operate on the Southampton to Portsmouth section of the Southern Railway as I was growing up. Lovely to see them still operating. That high pitched engine sound is forever etched in my brain.
So gentle here. Back n the day when the drivers opened up and gave it some thrash as they left Tonbridge station, the deep sound went straight through your whole body, right down to the core.
one thing that has always fascinated me is how the curves on railway track is calculated and how the radius is plotted out for perfect symmetry . does anybody know?
Always think them full width carriages added in spoil this classic unit pity it isn’t a 6 original car with a mini buffet added in as a modification would of been better I reckon
Palkia792 Thanks very much. 45379 was timetabled to be in service today but I believe some railway staff 'had words' to get the roster changed, meaning Cheltenham was in service to make the event a bit more Southern feeling.
I wanted to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so they extend the new abandoned underground stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into six cars per units and also having three Accessible Toilets on that six cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXC, Gardner 6LXB and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and also having 8 DisaAccessiblelets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. Oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build a brand-new underground train station so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford and could they extend the DLR? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Six carriages three accessible toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to create more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique minor no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 16 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those fascinating Journeys Please!!! oh, can you make all of those Coal Boxes’ 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us, passengers!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister of Germany, Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

I lived in Bramley between Basingstoke and Reading in the 70s when I was I kid and got these all the time. Great little trains.
They sound just like a class 20 chopper when 1 very 1st seen a thumper in the 1980s I couldn't believe these sound they made as they sound nice at power/thrash 🥰😍🤩
Superb video, great composition, thank you for keeping it running at 2:47 to continue recording the sound or our train! Great stuff! Thank you.

Thanks - if they watch this and read your comment, I'm sure they will be suitably informed!

Thank you Keith. They have a really distinctive engine note and "personality" so to speak, nothing really compares to them. Thanks for commenting.
I love the way the 205 looks like the 201s but fatter
Good film, I think it was great to see more than one thumper back on the mid hants again.
Thank you Charlie, it really was nice to have both Thumpers together.
I didn't realise that the Hastings unit was made up of so many classes of trains. Long and short DEMUs and two classes of EMU.
It wasn't originally. The restoration group have added in the CEP and Mk1 coach to provide additional seating and buffet facilities for rail tours.
So gentle here. Back n the day when the drivers opened up and gave it some thrash as they left Tonbridge station, the deep sound went straight through your whole body, right down to the core.
Great stuff. I always have a little look to see where the hastings unit is off to do some good tours.
Thanks very much! It always seems to cover some good track.
8:40 what a lovely composition, really loved this bit :)
Thank you Mike, it didn't come out quite as good as I'd have liked, but can't complain!
Great thumpers they are, sound like a class 20 😊
I love the uncompromisingly square lines of the Hastings units, shown very well at 6;45.
Thanks for the comment - it's definitely unique in terms of looks, and makes a nice change to the usual Mk1 body-shape we usually see.
Nice one ...great to see these ..something we dont get up here ..Dave
Thanks very much Dave, never seen it before so it was nice to have it visiting the railway.
one thing that has always fascinated me is how the curves on railway track is calculated and how the radius is plotted out for perfect symmetry . does anybody know?
I'm afraid I'm no expert on the subject so I can't really help.

awesome footage. :3 and lovely to see 45379 in the video. :3

oh no. :(
Being a southern fan i think it was a great idea because the line is southern region

What ever happened to ashford square and Brighton royal pavilion?
Excellent stuff
Thank you!
Great video they kinda sound like class 20’s
I agree
great but whats happened to the sliding windows on one of the coaches, not there, looks ghastly
My one criticism of this video is that no station names are shown on the Mid-Hants section.
I think the Thumpers should have been bi modes like the 73s (same engine)...
Anyone know what the white pipe and two attachments are at 8.12 below the engine cab ?
Speedometer drive equipment
They user to run through hampenden park to eastbourne
Isn't she absolutely gorgeous.
5:26 front window of tunbridge wells
