I recently purchased and installed the MMI Prime in my 2014 BMW 328i. After watching videos provided by BimmerTech I found the installation straight forward and easy. There was no coding required. It was literally plug and play. I'm using an iPhone 12 with iOS 16.4.1.The MMI has wireless capability which works very well. When first getting in the car sometimes it may take a minute for CarPlay to come up, but most of time it comes up right away. You can also plug your phone directly into the provided USB port that will keep your phone charged while traveling. Very pleased with this product.
Hi, which media module do you have?
I am not tech savy or mechanically inclined and I managed to install this retrofit pretty easily and in one hour. For those of you on the fence about installing it yourself. You can do it!
Glad to hear! We strive to make the video's as easy to understand as possible.

@@bimmer-tech does it need to use any coding after fully install ? such as BIMMER Code or Carly ........
@@bimmer-tech i installed in my bmw 120i and the check control and sound alert (door open and seat belt) dont work, any thoughts?
@@bimmer-tech can't get the DIP right, do you know the numbers sequences for a 2018 bmw x2?
I recently had BimmerTech retrofit my 528i xDrive (F10) with the MMI Carplay w/rear-view camera package and it was the best upgrade I’ve done to date. This upgrade gave my BMW new life since I commute quite frequently and having Carplay in my car allows me to use Apple or Google maps, Apple Music, iMessage, Calendars, Telegram, Siri, etc directly from the factory head-unit. Once Carplay is setup it connects automatically the next time I start the vehicle.
Nelson and his team are the real deal! They absolutely know BMW’s inside out. The installation was done quickly and I did not not have to return to have anything fixed/corrected. I highly recommend them to my other friends that have BMWs and would do so to anyone that wants to upgrade their BMW.
Real talk!
Great video guys, super clear and concise!!! 👌🏼
how would this differ from an f06 gran coupe i already ordered and know that its compatible just hope there will be space to store it behind the head unut and also wondering if my f06 would have the fiber optic cables that need to be transfered over
I just made a purchase on one. Excited to get it installed.
I'm wondering if I still can install this kit if I have the Alpine Hifi upgrade installed? It uses the same plug as in the harness used by your kit.
I just wanna say that this product is incredible!! I get so scared to put my trust into companies and ordering online in today’s world but I am beyond satisfied with my mmi! BimmerTech sent me all that I needed in order to install myself and the end result is perfect CarPlay! This has really taken my 2016 328i to the next level!!! Y’all rock 🔥🔥🔥🖤
We're very glad you love it 😊
Nice easy installation video - we fit these over here in the UK!
This is a great video. Straightforward and clear. You mentioned installing the unit behind/side of glovebox if there isn't space. Do you have a video or instructions for that?
We sure do, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/7h_b8z7qxGk/v-deo.html
Just ordered mine today for BMW 5 series F10... looking forward for the installation
You loose 400bucks... Buy on aliexpress its the same module
Thanks for this thorough and super helpful video! It really helped my install go relatively smoothly. Here are a couple tips that might help folks out that I wish I knew, or paid more attention to when I did my install.
1. I struggled with the first step. Removing the trim around my battery so that I could get to the negative terminal was practically impossible in my 2016 428i Convertible (F33), until I realized that if I take the top down halfway - to the point where the trunk opens to house the top - the area around the liner is easily accessible and can be temporarily removed.
2. At 6:22 into the video, he mentions that some BMW’s have fiber optic cables in the OEM harness that need to be moved over to the new BimmerTech harness. Make sure to check if this is the case for you. If you don’t move them over, you will have no audio in your vehicle! There’s another BimmerTech video that describes how to do this (really simple): “How to Remove Fiber Optic Cables from a BMW iDrive Quadlock”
Sorry for the long comment and I hope this helps someone!
Glad to hear you've made it! Thanks for sharing your advice :)
What are the specs of the MMI USB port? (Amps?) Will it quick charge?
I will be available to change next song from buttons on the wheel?
Good video! Can this Multimedia Interface shown in the video be installed on a 2019 BMW F2 series, 230i convertible, basic models?
Thanks! That depends on your head unit. If you have an NBT Evo you'll be able to retrofit CarPlay MMI Prime, but if you're equipped with MGU then unfortunately you won't be compatible.
Hi! I have a question... Is the CarPlay usb completely necessary for anything besides to update the unit? I would like to connect my iPhone to the standard bmw usb for charging and use wireless connection to CarPlay at the same time, would be possible? I would open the frontal trim to connect usb for updating... Many thanks for the tutorial!
Yes it also plays media (music, movies) from USB sticks. You can completely hide it so it won't be visible. Our support will explain how to do this after your purchase.
On a 1-Series, does your "box/unit" fit under the car control unit like in this video? Or it needs be placed in the glovebox (like mentioned on minute 12:22 )? Is therea video of this proces, and is it more complicated? Thanks ;)
The MMI unit fits either underneath the head unit, or in the cavity between the glovebox and the head unit, depending on the head unit size. We do not have a video for any 1-series cars, unluckily.
Very good video!! I showed it to a non-English-speaking tech [in Thailand] to install my MMI box. One question: Some MMI boxes connect top BMW Direct Connect using the AUX option in the MultiMedia options. Some BMWs don't have an AUX option. What is required?
Then you'd have to order the Aux coding service :)
What does this process look like on a 2017 i3 with a big iDrive screen yet no CarPlay? Does my factory backup camera still work?
Hello, please contact us at info@bimmer-tech.net and we'll send you instructions. Your camera will still work.
I didn’t see any aux jack on your interface. Does it transfers the audio by the USB as well? I want to buy this product but I am a little bit concerned about the sound quality issues that some users have reported on different forums. Could you please explain about sound quality in your product?
Hi there, if you have any concerns, please contact us at: info@bimmer-tech.net Our Sales Team will be happy to give you all the details.
Do you sell kits for the BMW M2 Competition ? thanks. Is. there enough room to install it under the radio or do i have to install it behind the glovebox thanks

2 questions:
It's possible to code the headunit after this installation?
Do you have some partner in Europe to avoid customs fees?
hello, yes, this installation will not affect any potential further upgrades. As for the customs fee, it should not be imposed, please see the shipping information here: www.bimmer-tech.net/information/shipping/pdf.
Thanks for the vid. Got any comparisons of the rear camera OEM vs 3rd party?
Not yet but thanks for the idea! :)
I had this installed on my I8, but it's lacking essentials for being "3rd generation" . The USB play black has no FWD or RWD function, and since it's not touch screen , you are stuck listing mp3s that are mixed into a long play session, so you can't advance or rewind a track...this sucks. I have asked for update, and I have gotten no response.
Great video
How do you switch between the OEM BMW menu/nav ect and the MMI (Android Auto) box? Or does this remove all the OEM menus?
No, your OEM menu is still included. You can always toggle back and forth between the MMI/Android Auto and the regular iDrive screen view by pressing and holding the iDrive controller MENU button for 3 seconds.
Would you be able to hook an OEM backup camera to this device rather than the AV hookup style one so not to lose the trunk opener button?
MMI Prime works with OEM cameras natively - you do not need to connect any additional wires for the OEM camera to work. It just takes a quick change of the settings.
has anyone installed in their G20 330i? how was the review and how easy for the installation?
I have a retro fitted Nbt evo id 6 on my 2012 F10. It already have wireless apple carplay. If i add this kit will i be able to get android auto as well ? Please reply. Thanks

How would I know if I have fiber optic cables in the OEM harness that need to be moved over to the new BimmerTech harness? I have a 2015 F30 with NBT.
The fiber-optic cable is the green one coming out of the upper right corner of the quadlock (when looking at the back of the head unit with the harness connected).
Question, do you know if the m4 has space or it has to be in glovebox
If you send an email with your VIN to info@bimmer-tech.net one of our team will let you know.
Do you have to install the usb hanging out from underneath the center controls? Can you not attach the usb wiring and just use the wireless connection instead? I would prefer not to have a usb hanging from the dash.
The USB is mostly used for the software updates which are released every few months. We strongly suggest having the USB routed to an accessible location.
I have a question, will it support the new features iOS 14 is bringing? I assume iOS will work with it but I’m referring to the updated interface and features?
Yes, it will support the new features.
Does this allow the original Idrive features to be retained or do you lose that along with the service history etc?
Our MMI Prime does not interfere with the iDrive features.
Is it not possible to connect the built-in USB port under the center console instead of the USB cable hanging there? Drive an F30 320D 2012.
This cable can be nicely camouflaged. It will not just hang from the dashboard. You can contact our support team for help: www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact or via website chat. They'll guide you what to do.
My head unit is easily twice the size of the one shown in the video, so as stated at around 12:25, it would need to be installed behind the glove box. Does anyone have a link to a video showing how to do that? Thanks.
I’m fitting one right now to a F21 with pro media so it’s double din. I’ve removed a lot trim around the centre console where the gear/auto stick it to check for voids and to also have more space to pull the double din out. I can reach to back of glove box that way, however the downside to this is it’s probably going to rattle. Recently fitted one to a F20 with single din which is a breeze. Good luck with it though 😊
Nice looking install. How would this differ for an f10?
If your F10 is compatible with our product the installation will be about the same - as with any other compatible BMW chassis. The electronics don't differ much. You're welcome to send us an inquiry at info@bimmer-tech.net with your VIN and we'll let you know!
What is the purpose of the loose-hanging USB cable other than...it just being a USB port? Does it have a special purpose or is it just a general USB?
I'm thinking of installing this module into my 2018 M2 LCI, and I don't need any extra USBs, and having a cable just hanging there is kind of messy.
It's for charging your phone, wired CarPlay and Android Auto (if your phone does not support wireless), playing videos over USB, and updates. If you don't need any of those features, just hide the USB cable near the MMI unit so it's not visible.

hi i bought this and am having a lot of trouble sliding the head unit back in as i have the larger head unit (which required the glovebox to be removed), please advise or potentially make a video with the larger head unit. thank you!

Is this compatible with CCC? Your website gives conflicting info. In the list of compatible cars, it lists several models from the 2002-2010 model years, but when a specific E6x model is entered, it says that car is incompatible (even though that very same model is in “list” of compatible cars).
Our list of compatible cars is a list of 'potentially compatible' cars, yet you can only see if your vehicle is fitted for a product only by decoding your VIN. It's basically because those car models can have different iDrive systems and the exact compatibility depends on the iDrive. In terms of the CCC - our CarPlay is not compatible with it.
Does this support the heads up display that projects onto the windshield? If so, does Android auto Google maps navigation directions show up on the HUD like the factory navigation does? If it doesn't support the HUD, does existing HUD functionality (mph, call info, etc) break? I'm asking for a 2012 335i sedan if it matters
syke512 Hi! This retrofit is completely separate from the HUD.
@@bimmer-tech I think that is what he is worried about. He wants to know if it will display the same data (or more) in the HUD.
How does this change for a 2015 x3? The screen is integrated in the dash instead of above it. Thanks.

Hello, would love to order this for my 2016 F22 BMW M235i convertible. Will the car microphone still work as is once this is installed? Or is there any additional steps required to make sure it will work?
Hi! It's fully integrated with your factory hardware, so your microphone, iDrive controller etc. will carry on working as usual.
Is it also possible to plug it into the stock USB port?
@@Robert-ty6nc i would also like to know this as this is my deciding factor.
Does it work if your just installing the MMI Prime thing on the old screen? How do you connect the LCD out and LCD in thing if you are only installing the MMI unit on old 6.5 inch screen?

Can we just not plug in the USB part if we’re only doing wireless or will that cause issues?
Hello Daniel, you will need to leave the harness installed and pulled through for any future updates or to setup the wireless connection for CarPlay. We initially ask to do a wired connection which then gives permissions for a wireless transition.
Can i still be able to use touch inputs for android auto? My screen is touch capable on nbt evo id6 for my bmw 4 series 2018?
Unfortunately not. With this retrofit you can use only steering wheel control or iDrive knob.

What is the wifi antenna for? Does it connect to your phone, or external networks?
The WiFi antenna is there to enable the connectivity between your phone and the MMI.
I've got my module and before installing I'm watching this video 20x 😅. I was thinking why not use the OEM monitor cable that goes into the head unit as the output from the MMI, and use your cable as the cable between the MMI and head unit? This saves pulling the trim and unplugging the monitor.

is removing negative terminal on Battery necessary? If you cut off the power i thought u have to use obs tool to reset the battery. Isnt it?
It is necessary, because you can easily change active safety features in your car. If you do that you’ll have to reconnect them first, or your car will store an error in the SRS module, which can be only removed by a BMW specialist. So basically, removing negative terminal is necessary. You do not need to however reset the battery if you are connecting the same battery back.

Isn’t this supposed to be like wireless? I though I don’t have to connect usb to my phone. So I have to like plug in my iPhone charger with the usb side on the CarPlay ?
Not at all! This system is wireless. The USB cable is used for updating the MMI, charging your phone, playing video files (off a flash drive), or for older Android phones that don't support wireless Android Auto.

any tips on my microphone not working? it had a aux mic port on the wiring but unsure on it.
AUX port is there so the MMI can play sounds through the car’s speakers. The microphone has its own 3-pin connector. If the microphone is not working you can check the microphone harness and its connector.
I'm an android user so this would be nice... will this work on my 2017 540i ?

Head over to our site (www.Bimmer-Tech.net), and click on "Identify your BMW." Once you enter the last seven digits of your VIN, the compatible products will have a green check next to them.

How difficult is this install for the BMW i8
Hi Brad! Well, we wish we had an i8 to hand to make an installation video for you ;) The fundamental installation process is the same for any model, it's just a matter of getting access to the head unit and connecting up the CarPlay MMI Prime unit. There might be a bit more trim panelling to remove in the i8 before you can get to the hardware underneath, but apart from that, it's not too different than in this video. You can take a look at how a previous customer got on here: ua-cam.com/video/A7LCl0s7HDA/v-deo.html
Wouldn't disconnecting the battery delete the car settings and maintenance historic?
No, it's all recorded in your BMW key :)
Is this plug and play without any coding I’ve got a BMW F20 2016
Yes, it's plug & play and no coding. Some cars need to have AUX coded in though, but you'll see if it's necessary for yours once you decode your VIN here: www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-carplay-mmi-retrofit
How comes the the Tone in the Car? Over Aux?
Yes, the module connects to the iDrive through the AUX port for audio.
I have a f30 2012 with no sat nav will this work for it?
Yes it should, but we'd have to make sure by checking your VIN. Please send us its last 7 digits and we'll see if this retrofit is possible for your car.
Can I check my oil levels and car diagnostic with it
Sadly not
