Thanks man. I was thinking of putting this in my I8 but after seeing this I think I'd rather use the BMM options and just get a phone holder and use the phone. Good video and lots of info you can't find on other videos.
Interesting, I just installed the box today and I'm so happy. It's much better than the phone holder. Of course, touch would be great, but it's not that difficult to get around with the idrive controls.
I have a 2012 e93 and installed an MMI box with CarPlay and a backup camera three years ago and I really like the usability of CarPlay over BMW's system. I wish I had installed it sooner.
Due to buy an F10 next week, this was one of the things i was looking for at £200, however the review has swayed me against one now, the android screens are twice the price unfortunately but does allow for touchscreen capability. I think i will just update the maps to the latest one and Bluetooth my music. Thank you for the review.
I think the 2014 and up have the touch pad on the idrive controller so you can just write with your finger what numbers you want to enter. Like a laptop mouse or ps5 controller.
Thanks a lot, great video. How is the transition to the reverse camera or parking view happening? Will it take longer than usual? Will it disrupt the connection of the module or something strange that you might notes?
I appreciate your breakdown of the MMI. I have a choice with Bimmertech, the MMI $750 or the NBT EVO retro for $2400!!! For my 2014 740i. The CarPlay looks like the way to go although it is not seemless. Great detail, thanks!
so far all the issues mentioned appear to be apples issues and not bimmer tech's as bimmer tech is mearly running apples carplay or android auto, and the screen mirror issue is simple because it is a screen mirror so what ever is happening on your phone is what you will see on the screen of your BMW.
These all just seem like minor complaints for me. Seems like it works exactly as advertised. as far as dialing a number im not sure why you would ever dial like that. siri dial xxxxxxxx or pick up your phone and just dial the number like normal and itll just connect the call. this is how dialing would work with any system that doesnt have a touch screen.
Not a touch screen. Usually boots in a few seconds but occasionally hangs a bit. Once in awhile it’ll appear connected but not be and the only cure is turn car off and back on.
Dude literally said its "hard to do" when he had to turn his phone sideways... lol this is the MMI PRIME. The MMI PRO os available now. Edit: Not having a touch screen is really not as bad as this guy is making it out to be. This dude lives life glass half empty for sure.
Hi, i've got a question. How's the sound after the carplay upgrade? i mean the music has the AUX quality even if you're connected on the bluetooth? As far as i know there's a difference between the AUX sound quality and the Bluetooth one. I'm lookin forward to get a carplay module but i dont wanna lose the sound quality. I hope you can understand what im tryin to find :)) sorry for my english mistakes.
You are complaining more about Carplay features defined and controlled by Apple, which really have nothing to do with the MMI interface itself. All of these Carplay quirks appear on EVERY vehicle that has Carplay, whether it's factory or aftermarket.
Not meant as complaints. Just trying to give a feel of what this unit is like. In fact, I commend them for using the car’s original controls when able.
really stupid review, I mean i get it that you get annoyed with using dial to navigate between apps but you highlighted stupid things which doesn't really matter
I definitely feel your pain, I recently installed to my 2019 G20 and that thing has its own mind, it is convenient and at the same time very destructive unit. It doesn’t support Touch screen that is the biggest downside, but yet $800 price. I don’t know their R&D department is working on this?
Does your G20 have a touch screen? In my BMW there was never a touch screen in the first place. I don't think they are working on it. They only asked which software version I had after I complained. They never seem to have software updates.
@@daveyator I do have a touch screen but apparently MMI prime does support touchscreen. what is going on with their product is more they sell more they are figuring out about MMI prime glitches and keep adding to their list to do. So each customer is guinea pig.

Great upgrade - we also install Apple CarPlay for BMWs over here in the UK!
Thanks for the eye-opening personal review. It appears to be more cumbersome than helpful.
Um maybe. But with this older BMW at least you're getting some functionality back rather than staring at a useless display. Better than nothing.

This was a 2014 5 series.
Isn’t the control button’s touch working with it?
Not completely sure what you're asking. I don't own this car anymore so hard to go check.
@@daveyator hes talking about on the steering wheel
Is it possible to get a CIC screen to work in a NBT car?
Thanks a lot, great video. How is the transition to the reverse camera or parking view happening? Will it take longer than usual? Will it disrupt the connection of the module or something strange that you might notes?
No delay. Works as normal. Doesn't affect it.
@@daveyator, thanks!
Does the CarPlay maps work with the HUD Display? Any you lose any original functions once installed?
@@ricardosola2784 It does not work with the HUD. No original functions lost due to installation.

Very helpful..thanks!
Was it a hard installation?
No. I didn’t have to install a mic or audio cable though. Hardest part was getting the module to stay where I wanted as I put everything back in.

Sorry I came across that way. I like how it allows use of the original screen and controls.
Weird, my Waze works great when it comes to finding local businesses.

It’s at least as good as original equipment. In fact, you use satellite radio, it’s probably marginally better.

Just use your phone with a decent quality mount and leave the car alone
It didn't do anything to the car. In fact, it extends the use of otherwise useless controls and display.
