"The AnNsWerrRr!!..." I always hesitated to go through the trouble of building this moc, and it seems like it had good ideas, with some flawed execution. What I always admired was how well it looked like it fit into the original Bionicle canon for the time. With your simple fixsr-uppers, I might actually go out and piece this guy together!
@@DuckBricks lol it was part of the joke that Guy num 1 has lot of lewas And guy num 2 talks about the rahi contest then Guy 1 builds tahtorak from his lewas for the contest
I love how crazy these old momcs were. They may not be very stable or posable, but I love how strange and creative the parts usage and overall aesthetic are.
This guy was always so mind blowing to me as a kid, I got that contest book from a scholastic book fair in first or second grade and I spent so much time just staring at it X)
Seeing the Tahtorak flop around at the start of the video gave me flashbacks to the MOCs I made when I was a kid and hadn’t yet learned what structural integrity was. Multiple appendages that fuse into one limb too close to the end to actually reinforce anything, a body far too bulky to be supported by those legs, only one precarious pose that would actually stand up for any length of time before the slightest vibration created by a footstep on the other side of the house made it come toppling over. Never built anything that looked this cool, though.
Thank you very much for this thorough review, this is a model that I've always wanted to try building and I'm still gathering the parts before finding the fan instructions. It's good to know that there are some issues with posing that need to be fixed and that there are methods to do so. Right off the top of my head, while watching the review, I was inspired to create a torso design that uses those standard torsos on top of each other, but adding a worm gear in between so that it can have stationary posing when needed, kind of like the 2015 Bionicle sets with friction gears. When or if I get that going, I'll try to make my own video explaining it
I guess it makes sense that the Tahtorak's construction wouldn't meet LEGO's quality standards in regard to its stability since it was a fan creation. Still, you can get it to stand without altering the build if you've got one or two spare figure display stands lying around to support the weight of its head and body. It's not the most elegant solution, but it's reliable and will enable you to actually use the torso articulation. I'm currently using figure stands to help keep Ultimate Dume and Kardas stable, but I'll definitely keep your solution of using friction adders in mind if I ever have enough spares lying around.
Aaaah, Tahtorak. The Bionicle Godzilla himself. One of the most funny things with those reviews is, the MOCs often can't support their own weight and can't keep staying up, like if they want to make you ashamed in front of the camera. *Duckbricks : Please stay still and up. *Tahtorak : No I won't.
Welcome to the domain of flip-flopping, on the good side, he can be the winner of any slap-battle with those floppy clawed hands. I wonder how would he look if you would stabilize and straighten up the torso with additional axels, connecting lewa torsos. That head design though, if it's really a kid who made it, my applause! Head truly looks like something that should be in an official set, now I want a green Sidorak relative riding one of those Godzillas (but would completely redo the body).
I can't stop laughing ever time it falls over and the neck pops open. Someone finally understands my pain. Ever since I figured out how to make the Tahtorak back in 2009, I was amazed at how bad it was a posing. The featured picture of it is really the only position it can remain upright in.
As a suggestion, I put a 3L pin through the rakshi kraata holder in my Tahtorak. This way the neck stays in place without falling. It works better than the pin you're usin because it is larger and more rigid.
Dont blame the build, blame the pieces you used, if you buid it using very old and worn out pieces of course is gonna flop a lot, but if you use pieces in really good condition the rahi works perfectly well
One thing I really wish we got to see animated was the Kaiju fight the Tahtorak and Krahka had with the Zivon. Or the fight it had with Kardas Or even the fight with the Kanohi Dragon Yeah, the one from Metru Nui had been through quite a lot
This Rahi is one of the most resilient in the universe. It battled several similarly sized Rahi like the Zivon, the Kardas Dragon, and the Kanohi Dragon, and never seemed like it would lose the fight Also the fact it is sentient and speaks Matoran makes it scarier. Imagine waking up to "GIVE ME THE ANSWER!" and seeing a 40 foot tall green dinosaurian Rahi destroying your village or city
Just as something to consider, maybe the joints that seem loose and floppy were originally strong enough to hold up a pose but over time they've lost some structural integrity. After all, we are talking about 17-20 year old plastic at this point. I've actually got a kongu inika that will hardly hold himself upright at the joints. Just food for thought.
That definitely could be part of it, although there are ways that models can be built to work around these issues and be more stable despite having weak joints
Thanks! And yeah it’s definitely a valid point; joints are not as strong as they were back in the day due to time. Thankfully it seems CCBS is doing a much better job of standing the test of time and staying durable though!
At 15:50 you are pointing at 2 Lewa Torsos. If you moved those blue pieces that do nothing, into those open slots on the torso pieces. It would hold the body up, no? Also, not the Kanohi Dragon as winner? That thing looks Monstrous.
Hmm perhaps, what’s strange is that instructions do say to place them where I did so I’m really not sure. I’ll have to try and and see if it works. The Kanohi Dragon is certainly very impressive and imposing as well! Sadly, since there are no instructions for it yet, I haven’t gotten the chance to get a hands on experience with it to truly judge it. Maybe someday!
@@DuckBricks Well if they're in the instructions, then they are probably for aesthetics. So perhaps some brown or black ones of they same type, to blend into the green better. Great work Btw!
Kirbold and Kyry shouldn’t be too hard to get pieces to make reviews for. Somebody else on UA-cam known as The Legend Reborn did a review of Kirbold, but it looks like in his video, he had the helmet on backwards, because the artwork shows the details of the mask from the back. Also for Kyry, you’ll need to go off of the original contest entry photo when building him instead of a screenshot from his appearance in the comics, simply because in the comics he has a different head design.
Wow there are so many fan models that can’t stand up. Once I someday build it using your few mods I plan to display it attacking the Battle for Metru Nui set or the Ninjago City Gardens set.
Ahh tatorak, it is large, and kinda stupid looking. I feel like the official lego contests were very much chosen because of part count or size, as seen by the makuta contests. It looks neat, but it doesn’t really stack up to other mocs like some dark hunters.
100% agreed; I feel like there were other MOCs that were built a lot better even within the Rahi book, but this was chosen for the imposing look and classic Godzilla/dinosaur feel
I always Tahtorak very overrated personally. Good for the kid who won the contest but I found a lot of the other Rahi in that book way cooler as a kid. It's striking and I can see how it's iconic but it always struck me as "huh"
So it's basically green and sentient Tarrasque? Also, I would replace gear back spikes with Lewa swords. I've got a feeling that half pin wasn't included because that's not exactly a legal build.
i hate to say this, but the problems you are having with pose-ability are not universal. i just finished parting out this model (in all the correct colors), and i have never once had its head fall like in your video. neither have i had any issues with it keeping poses for its other limbs. i suggest sourcing unused or lightly used pieces, maybe don't use socket connectors made after 2007, which it is very clear you used in this build.

one of the few canon models I haven't built despite owning the necessary pieces. for 2 reasons:
1. non-canon scale
2. non-existent stability
Yup, two good reasons to not build this one sadly
Maybe the blue pins are supposed to connect a figure, maybe like a matoran maybe, so you can get them to ride on top of it?
That was what I was thinking - but what sort of figure, I don’t know
