I’m an old California grandpa who has heard a lot of live music from famous bands. I think “ The Deeper Understanding” is in the top 3 albums in the last 20-30 years. I don’t say this lightly. But deeply, with some understanding.
Thanks Dan, your comment has brought me to stop and listen to this band I’ve never heard before. I can really feel your genuine and well heeled endorsement that I find refreshing. From one middle age California hippie to the next. ☮️
First hearing I thought Tom Petty, Springsteen, Dylan well mixed and new. I Love it. Run to buy Lost in a Dream and deeper understanding... They are two of the best albums I own
First, the KEXP sound crew should get awards for this performance. Each instrument is perfectly staged. There is a lot of information to represent here but ALL of it is perfectly mixed. Second, I have never LISTENED to WOD before, yet this is a watershed moment for me musically. I can look back over the 50 years of my life and point to these moments and see their effect on my life. In 1981 it was Joy Division. In 1982 it was the Comsat Angels. In 1983 it was Stiff Little Fingers. In 1985 it was the Jesus and Mary Chain. In 1991 it was the Catherine Wheel. In 2018 it is the War On Drugs. I have been changed again. Amazing music.

Yeah thanks. I don't know this band (yet) and just stumbled in here, and had no idea where to start looking for the music until I saw this list of titles. Much easier than trying to find the titles again by backing up the video. I hate to interrupt a good song just to search back for the title. Phenomenal audio quality, BTW.
The way "You Don't Have To Go" ends is something else. This album was my therapy for some time 5 years ago, and I had tears in my eyes every time this song wrapped up the album. It still gets me every time.
im no audio engineer... amateur or otherwise, but KEXP has some of the best sounding live performances i've ever heard. everytime. they have turned me onto bands, i may otherwise would have shrugged right off.
Realize that this is how almost ALL recorded music could sound, if every freaking band and mastering engineer didn't brickwall the crap out of everything. The audio we could have from the past 30 years would be unbelievable....instead, it's all compressed. Look into the loudness war, if you're not aware of it. It is disgusting how technology has improved in every area of our lives, yet recorded music sounds worse now than it did 50 years ago. But that being said, yes, the KEXP sound crew does it right!! Best recorded performances out there. Go look up Local Natives and listen to how well that's recorded....the harmonies.....unbelievable. The KEXP guys should be consulted for all recorded music!! :)
This song "Pain" when I heard it. Marked a moment in my life, when I went from kinda worrying about my little lane in life. To really feeling a part of this whole human thing. That we literally all struggle. That's music. Great music. It makes you really think really feel and just it's something many many paragraphs can't quite explain. Thanks Adam
This music reminds me of a time that I struggled with. A fabulous radio station where I discovered this fabulous band! My momma was dying from ovarian cancer. The music gave me something I could hold on to! Strong music for my soul! Bittersweet and beautiful!
Maybe what people understand as Live album tends to be sloppy. This KEXP LIVE is a controlled environment play. Not as they would play on a live stage with thousands of fans screaming and the guys moving around and the stuff that happens on a live show. This KEXP experience is very different from that.

I've watched the last KEXP War on Drugs performance like 3 million times. And now this! Awesome.. what an amazing band. Wish I could fly to America and see you guys on tour. Come to Brazil!!
Massively talented & massively under-rated,just seen their performance at Glastonbury on Sunday night & they are becoming one of my favourite bands, keep the albums coming boys!! 🎸👌🤘
Same. I've been aware of this band for quite a few years and really enjoy Slave Ambient and a few tracks from the following albums but when I watched their set live from Glastonbury it was a lightbulb moment. They looked and sounded absolutely spot on and in fact sounded better live. Always a good sign. Now I'm kinda obsessed with them tbh. Such a great set in the sun. Unfortunately I can't find it on UA-cam (just the audio). Best band by a hundred miles that weekend.
They're great but they're not under-rated. I read that so often in comments on various bands and I find it very parochial. They don't sell as many records as Taylor Swift, but they are current and one of the most popular and respected indie bands of the past twenty years. You don't get nobodies playing Glastonbury.
My old old timer heart makes a jump . This band is the shower for my brains and and give my abig smile from ear to ear. What a sound. War on drugs is for me the band . EVERY DAY i listen to this AWESOME band. I love these guys.
Its a beautiful song, thanks for sharing Jesse ;) Btw What d'you think of this one? ua-cam.com/video/1b85V2p4puw/v-deo.html&list=PLWehun4PmMf_00nsBZDretT5gHW_zhBeb

"i dont even know what emotions are overcoming me" Those last 2 minutes are undescribably good, just reminds me of everything... my childhood , dead pets and on and on Have also bought myself a gretch semi acoustic guitar and started learning to play thanks to this! Love you guys
The deep tone of the sax riding along with the bass sets an incredible mood throughout the album. Heading down a hill on a recent road trip, I hit 90+ on a wide open 2 lane local route without noticing one bit.
My favourite thing to do is have a little "gummy", read in bed for a bit, then lie down, listen to The War on Drugs which is fantastic when a little stoned and drift into my afternoon nap!

I ain't going to lie That is the best sound ing band The best sounding studio the best sounding everything ever and I listen to more music than 10 people normally do in their lifetime
I recently discovered this band thanks to Spotify. I was listening to my Foals Radio channel when Pain came on! I honestly felt a connection to their music and started listening to everything they have put out. Change…in the woods.. OMFG you guys absolutely crushed it! Very surprised to have discovered another rare and truly talented group of professional musicians who touched my soul with their music.
I’ll never forget hearing this band for the first time when my college roommate brought home a vinyl of “Lost in the Dream”. No problem with other commenters’ comparisons, but on the other hand, don’t much agree with any - Adam and Co are in a league of their own. Even tracks that I once felt were lacking tend to grow on me over time…one in a million
I love when Adam lights up and starts talking about Sean everett. In my humble opinion, I think that they all made one of the best records ever here, and it's always such an absolute pleasure to listen to, and the attention to detail on all the recording and engineering is so noticeable if you sit with it for a moment, and pays off in such an incredible way, and to me, establishes so so clearly that Sean Everett is the baseline, the gold standard of what modern organic studio engineering looks like.

Pain
====
Go to bed now I can tell
Pain is on the way out now
Look away and domino falls away
I know it's hard looking in
Knowing that tomorrow you'll be back again
Pin your head and let me in
I'm waiting
So long
I was staring into the light
When I saw you in the distance, I knew that you'd be mine
Am I moving back in time
Just standing still
I met a man with a broken back
He had a fear in his eyes that I could understand
I can even shake the hand
When I break it in
I've been pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
But I wanna find what can't be found
I'm aware you're tired and lost
Like a demon in the doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just begging
Pull me close and let me hold you in
Give me the deeper understanding of who I am
Yeah, I'm moving back again
I'm waiting here
I'm just pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change, own it in your own way
Yeah, I wanna find what can't be found
Holding On
=========
Once I was alive and I could feel
I was holding on to you
And I redefined the way I looked at dawn inside of you
I went down a crooked highway
Alone outside the line
I've been rejected, now the man has turned and I'm out of time
Ain't no way I'm gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I can't move the past
Feel like I'm about to crash
Riding on my line, I keep keeping on
Once we were apart and I could see red
Never trying to turn back time
Never meant to bring my pain to the front and into your life
Now I'm headed down a different road
Can we walk it side by side?
Is an old memory just another way of saying goodbye?
Ain't no way I'm gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I can't move the past
Feel like I'm about to crash
Riding the same line, I keep keeping on
And he never gonna change
He never gonna learn
I keep moving on the path, yeah
Holding on to mine
When you talk about the past
What are we talking of?
Did I let go too fast?
Was I holding on too long?
Ain't no truths from the past
As silent as the sea
And it holding on too long
But you're right in front of me
And I'm moving on a cast
Shadows on my seam
I keep moving with the changes, yeah
Ooh
Strangest Thing
=============
Some are right underneath
And how I look today
I've been hiding out so long
I gotta find another way
Late at night I wanna see you
Will my eyes they begin to fade?
Am I just living in the space between
The beauty and the pain?
And the real thing
Now the sky is painted
In a wash of indigo
I've been holding on too long
That I hardly know the score
I recognize every face
But I ain't got everything I need
If I'm just living in the space between
The beauty and the pain
It's the strangest thing
Yeah, should I surround my life
Surrounded by a hole
Surrounded by no other
I wanna ride it home
Yeah, be the writer of your own story
Let it turn you onto love again
Be the writer of your own story
Let it turn you onto love again
I wanna ride, I wanna ride
You Don't Have To Go
=================
Love is a bird I can't even see
Even in the darkness right in front of me
And you were shining bright through the window in the morn
There's a torrent that rises gently
There's a wind
You can be free, sometimes brave
Sometimes all you want to do is run away
I don't need a curse, the hurt is much too real
But even worse, I'm silently waiting
For her, the room will be painted
Yeah, I know, it's hard, this time
Yeah, I know, you know, this time...
How could I wait until you recognized me?
When you were there inside my dreams
No, you don't have to go, I want to make you stay
Goodbye, anyway
I heard the news today
I've been up since the break of dawn
I lost my mind today
I'm at the sea, and I can hear the trains
Winds of change, so new
Blow right through me and blow back through you
And pull you into the light, yeah
Now I'm home, and it's clear you're gone
Lost my edge today, singing all my songs in the pouring rain
Pushed and pulled apart by the scenes
I can feel the change
Winds of love blow few, and they move through me, and they blow through you
And take you into the night, yeah

The beauty and the pain
It's the strangest thing
Yeah, she runs surrounding me
Surrounded by the whole
Surrounded by no other
I wanna run home
Yeah, I can run slowly
Don't run away again
Yeah, I can run in the storm
Don't you run again
I wanna run, I wanna run
Yeah, I can run slowly
Yeah, I can run slowly
One of the best bands out these days. Super underrated...real solid performance!
Pain makes me cry like a baby
What a band! How have I only just heard of you. A criminal miss!
That 'Strangest thing' solo gives me the chills, amazing
Damn!! the way Adam just goes at that guitar on strangest thing gives me such goosebumps..It looks almost impossible that anyone can do that with their hands!
Bass dude in this band is quietly back being a stone cold killer. Best player in the band.
Keyboardist is pretty solid as well
Those licks are so fire
Do everything once,and enjoy.
My 4 month old daughter is ´singing´ with Adam, love The War On Drugs!
Charlie bossing it just like the last KEXP session. He's so important to their sound, legend.
I've watched the last KEXP War on Drugs performance like 3 million times. And now this! Awesome.. what an amazing band. Wish I could fly to America and see you guys on tour. Come to Brazil!!
I came to Rio
Maria Vitória Garcia de A. Camargo ....and to Germany!
Também já assisti várias vezes as duas performances deles no KEXP. Simplesmente demais. Ia ser incrível se eles viessem ao Brasil
Ctz faz 8 meses q só dá eles e Mac DeMarco nos meus chills
Shoutout to the bass player. Superunknown shirt is STRONG.
It's not Superunknown it's Ba
dmotorfinger dude !!!
Album of the year
choggerboom ---could not agree more; best long road trip disc in years!! Play over and over! Disc of the year!!
My old old timer heart makes a jump . This band is the shower for my brains and and give my abig smile from ear to ear.
What a sound. War on drugs is for me the band . EVERY DAY i listen to this AWESOME band.
I love these guys.
It's like 80's Bob Dylan if he cared deeply about melody and band cohesion.
Nail it!
Its a beautiful song, thanks for sharing Jesse ;) Btw What d'you think of this one? ua-cam.com/video/1b85V2p4puw/v-deo.html&list=PLWehun4PmMf_00nsBZDretT5gHW_zhBeb
Thought the same thing. Esp these most recent albums.
He has a voice with a cross of like Bob Dylan and Bryan Adams
@@bittersweet_reign4159 And Mike Scott
The war on drugs makes my heart melt, i go from feeling hopeful to nostalgic, and then I jump back in to hope!
So, so so good. Best band in years.
Cheryl said it the best.. "i dont even know what emotions are overcoming me"
Those last 2 minutes are undescribably good, just reminds me of everything... my childhood , dead pets and on and on
Have also bought myself a gretch semi acoustic guitar and started learning to play thanks to this! Love you guys
saw them for the 12th time recently. God damn, they just get better and better. Truly an incredible live force now. Cant wait for the next time.
The deep tone of the sax riding along with the bass sets an incredible mood throughout the album. Heading down a hill on a recent road trip, I hit 90+ on a wide open 2 lane local route without noticing one bit.
I can't stop listening to this version of "Strangest Thing". It's amazing!
These guys sound freaking amazing in a live performance, almost studio level. Absolutely stunning.
Sounds even better than their studio release
I come back to this performance periodically to feel something.
Perfection. Lyrically, Musically, Emotionally,
The band should be very proud of this entire record
Jeffrey Scott I agree
♥️
the bass player / tone and fills are on point. tasteful.
The most hypnotic voice!.... I found war on drugs by accident a little while back!.... What a very happy accident!....
Simply outstanding!....
😎👌🌾🌾🌼
Same. Can totally relate. Found them accidentally on Spotify and wow...just wow!
every live performance from this band is an absolute clinic on what a live band should sound like...
That snare sounds so nice.
Francisco Santiago any idea what the sheet over his snare drum head is?
No idea! It honestly looks to me like he cut up an old t-shirt and taped it on!
Possibly another snare head he cut up? Take an old snare head and put upside down on top of your snare. Instant fat snare
Justin Martindale definitely more plausible than my t-shirt theory!
Here’s a better look at what’s going on with the snare. ua-cam.com/video/LA1dvunsBdw/v-deo.html
My favourite thing to do is have a little "gummy", read in bed for a bit, then lie down, listen to The War on Drugs which is fantastic when a little stoned and drift into my afternoon nap!
Holding on: 5:35
Once I was alive and I could feel
I was holding on to you
And I redefined the way I looked at dawn inside of you
I went down a crooked highway
I went all outside the line
I've been rejected, now the light has turned and I'm out of time
Ain't no way I'm gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I keep moving past
Feel like I'm about to crash
Riding on my line, keep keeping on, yeah, ooh
Once we were apart and I could see red
Never trying to turn back time
Never meant to bring my pain into the front and into your life
Now I'm headed down a different road
Can we walk it side by side?
Is an old memory just another way of saying goodbye?
Ain't no way I'm gonna last
Hiding in the seams, I keep moving past
Feel like I'm about to crash
Riding the same line, I keep keeping on, yeah, ooh
I ain't never going to change
He never gonna learn
I keep moving on the path, yeah
Holding on to mine
When you talk about the past
What are we talking of?
Did I let go too fast?
Was I holding on too long?
Ain't no truths from the past
As silent as the sea
Am I holding on too long?
But you're right in front of me
And I'm moving on a cast
Shadows on my seam
I keep moving to changes, yeah, ooh
Heart or hope
Heart or hope
Heart or hope
Heart or hope
Strangest Thing. Man that solo hits the heart.
I lie in bed in the afternoons sometimes, indolent on Indica, and this music takes on new life and meaning ... very innovative band
KEXP you have done it again! Great band and great sound highlighting the best music in the world. You guys in Seattle are spoiled with this quality. Thanks for sharing with the world. War on Drugs come to Ireland and meet your fans!
i love that they dedicated "strangest thing" to Cheryl
The best band in the world for the last 5 years, they made 2 masterpieces.
CHERYL IS THE ONLY WOMAN I'VE EVER LOVED!
We are all her children. 🤘🏻
David Randall Curtis I
Sound engineering here is incredible. Props to @KEXP! What a powerful sound, each instrument adding to the musical bliss. We are all Charlie Hall!
The fact that over 100 people didnt like this, is almost as mind blowing as this performance! War on Drugs never disappoints.
I ain't going to lie That is the best sound ing band The best sounding studio the best sounding everything ever and I listen to more music than 10 people normally do in their lifetime
Holy shit this is amazing!!! They sound so tight live!!!
i find it amazing how Adam can just switch on and go to that ethereal place. that goes beyond pure talent.
Jesus that last minute and a half of Strangest Thing is life changing.
Joshua Elliff That is a fact!
This is blowing my mind. Listening on a pair of Sennheiser HD 650.
Hd598 here...amazing!
listening through a pair of Jerry Harvey in ears Angie, absoulte amazing sound
I recently discovered this band thanks to Spotify. I was listening to my Foals Radio channel when Pain came on! I honestly felt a connection to their music and started listening to everything they have put out.
Change…in the woods.. OMFG you guys absolutely crushed it!
Very surprised to have discovered another rare and truly talented group of professional musicians who touched my soul with their music.
So glad you got there bro. Best wishes.
Holding On live is incredible
This makes every emotion you have ever felt come through, you feel your past, present and future in one rush. Stunning xx
I can just see Cheryl at home in floods of happy tears as they played Strangest Thing.
First band that I can relate to with quality since the 60?s-70s. Thank you! Amazing…Brought so much joy into my life! Thank you!!!!💞
Do you have recommendations? :)
La mejor banda en la mejor radio. Todo en su lugar.

I like the introduction. I think Troy wanted to just say "FUCK YEAH, WAR ON DRUGS, TAKE IT AWAY"
NOOO CHERYL COME BACK PLS
She does the midday show. This is the afternoon show.
With all the rubbish music that is around these day's this is an absolute gem of a band. Brain cant handle the awesomeness!
I found this band six years ago during my time at law school. Bittersweet memories
Such a beautiful performance. The War on Drugs is surely one of the Top American bands.
Only just discovered this band 🎸🌻 my god this music is effortless and amazing
I love when Adam lights up and starts talking about Sean everett. In my humble opinion, I think that they all made one of the best records ever here, and it's always such an absolute pleasure to listen to, and the attention to detail on all the recording and engineering is so noticeable if you sit with it for a moment, and pays off in such an incredible way, and to me, establishes so so clearly that Sean Everett is the baseline, the gold standard of what modern organic studio engineering looks like.
Dire Straits vibes.. so beautiful. Best album of 2017
Agreed, mixed with some Bob Seger, no?
It's who they remind me of. Takes me back to that time. Loved some Knopfler sound.
Those keys in that upper register are so sweet. Such a well spaced out mix. A lot more lively, bright sounding than on the record.
I fell in love with this band the first second I heard them. Best music I've heard in a while. Thank u for this amazing music. Love it.
Oh my heavens! Strangest Thing was amazing! A very haunting song, "the space between the beauty and the pain"
to my ears, this dudes voice seems to capture the soul of the 80s and 90s, its incredible.
You dont have to go: 23:30
Love is a bird I can't even see
Even in the darkness right in front of me
And you were shining bright through the window in the mornin'
There's a tone that rises gently
With a wind
You can be free, sometimes brave
Sometimes all you want to do is run away
I don't need the curse, the hurt is much too real
Are we even lost
I'm silently waiting
For how the room will be painted
Yeah, I know, it's hard, this time
Yeah, I know, you know, this time
How could I wait 'til you recognized me?
When you were there inside my dreams
No, you don't have to go, I want to make you stay
Goodbye, anyway
I heard the news today
I've been up since the break of dawn
I lost my mind today
I'm at the sea, and I can hear the trains
Winds of change, so new
Blowin' right through me then blow back through you
And pull you into the light, yeah
Now I'm home, and it's clear you're gone
I lost my edge today
Singin' all my songs in the pouring rain
Pushed and pulled apart at the seams
I can feel the chains
The winds of love blow few
Let it move through me
Let it blow through you
And take you into the night, yeah
I cry every time. I am not able not to cry and it’s the most amazing thing ever. Thank you KEXP and thank you TWOD for the gift of your music.
Me encanta esta banda me encanta la primera canción. Siempre la escucho aquí la pasan en la radio 99.1 doble nueve. El mejor rock del mundo.. Saludos desde lima perú 🇵🇪
One of the best bands going
I just found out about this wonder of a band like a month ago (i know..).. A deeper understanding resonates me on levels I did not know was possible. Cant remember the last time I was this in love with a band. Thank you for existing
I truly hope they will be back at KEXP for the new album later this year. A man can only dream.
Love that drummer
So some fringe station was playing War On Drugs. I stopped the car. Hooked. Real band, real talent. Real music is back.
That's some real music gentlemen...
