- Have you often wondered how to improve your bike?
Today, most bikes have a 1x8 1x10 1x11 1x12 single-row drive.
In this video I'll show you how to convert your old 3 row crank into a modern one with a narrow wide sprocket!

i did this conversion several months back and its worked out great. no more messing with a front derailleur and i don't feel that i've lost anything in terms of riding performance. i used the middle ring more than 90% of the time anyways on the 3 ring setup.
Very good 😊
Can you put a link to the stuf you used
@@Sebatron-pr9bv Race Face narrow wide chain ring RNW104X30BLK, Shimano Acera FC-M361 crankset (this is for a square taper bottom bracket)
53T/39T chainring and 11-32T Casette has the same upper and lower gear ratio as 1x 53T chainring and 11-42T Casette. 1x isn't totally losing out on the important gears if you don't mind the less narrow gear shifts.
same
Chainring actually belongs behind the spider for the 32t range area to mirror the original position and chainline
Thanks mate good 1 short sharp straight to the point 👍☺️
New subscriber here...I found your video in my recommendation...watch it..and boy..a gem video..more videos please..
😉
I just did option # 2 , but used $1.50 lock washers to shim the space, working flawlessly
Thank you so much for this video!!!! I unnecessarily took mine apart before I figured out how to take the crank off and it has been a B*** trying to put the three pieces back together. I didn't realize that the outer ring goes OVER the crank but your video helped me figure that out. Thank you again!!!
Very well
From what I understand about chainline, the front ring needs to line up with the middle rear cog.
So you would use option II and possibly up to 4 mm of spacers and longer chainring screws to line up the chain.

@@piotr462are you stupid?
I've done the same but with SRAM narrow wide steel rings which last much longer. The difficulty then is getting them to fit a different BCD. It can be achieved to a good finish with an angle grinder and a drill though.
I like budget 1x conversions and I do it myself sometimes but I feel like the 4 spider doesn't look as great because the way the spoke designs aren't sporty. The DM chain rings look sweeter.
After I got a couple more teeth in the back , I found that I needed the upper and lower ranges less frequently. Eventually I wondered if all the clutter and extra needs of attention was worth it for as often as I needed the outer ranges. I'll still keep the 3x for the road trip bike, but the switch will simplify the commuter.
That is cool, thanks for upload 🙏
Been doing this for 10years plus , chainline from middle ring doesn't matter , unless running 12speed where it needs to be bang online in order to reach top and bottom cogs without catching frame
i did this conversion on two different shimano 3x-Cranks and both times i had to file a bit of the chainring mount on the crank to put the chainring from china (Deckas, Snail, etc. all the same) into the correct position (Pos. option 2 in you video)
The oval crank is an amazing power boost and the weight reduction helps balance the bike out some carbon bars and bars and a billet stem should balance the rest out nicely.
It's so funny how things trend. Those oval rings were big on road bikes in the 80s until some famous competitor said they sucked and everybody stopped using them. Now they are back! lol
Nice idea 👌
What specific shimano crank model did you use is this video? Thanks
Liked the way you turn the Ratchet ( w/clicking sound 😅)to show viewers how to use it☺👍
I love option 1 with turning over disc, many brand logo on bike
Really has nothing to do with logo you can run it either way. What he is showing is you can run the chainring in both outside the spider or inside the spider. For most the inside position is usually the best for chain line puts it where the middle ring was. No matter which option you choose you can run logo in or out.
Super helpful ❤❤❤❤❤
Okay this actually seemed a lot easier than I thought, was out riding today and realized how little I need a 3x so thank you and I will re reference this video once I get a 1x chainring
Edit: my cranks are allterra but a similar set up in the front rings will this work?
actually using a mtb uphill makes you realize how little the front 3 matters
@@growingup4487 oh absolutely, the park I usually ride to ( a normal park since there’s no bike parks near me) has this massive hill that is super fun to go down but can be a pain to go up and even then I hardly use the biggest and smallest chain rings. I’m almost always using the middle one
Hi.can i convert my triple deor crankset to single for compatible to my converting cassette from 9speed to 12speed? Is it standard to use old crankset with new single one?
Did you use the same number of teeth on the replacement chainring as was on it. If not how do you decide ?
Its best to use the second option...it brings the chainline nearer the middle line of the cogs..
Usually yes 😁
Hey dude, the 94+96 BCD symetric dekas chain ring can fit to shimano altus FM 361 crank just like yours? i saw u had 104 BCD chain ring to that fit in.
Can cranks be removed from Shimano FC-TY501 crankset? And if so, will the same chainring you are using in this video fit to the cranks?
What chain and rear cassette did u use mate and derailleurs
Is the option 2 vs option 1 just preference? Or a lil better performance to it? Thanks for the idea for budget building.
Its connected with chain line and little with visual
I have a single. It definitely needs 2 front sprockets. 10th gear as a commuter is less than a bmx bike.
Sending my full support Sir ride safe
God bless you sir 🙏
Thanks bro 😉
hi sir: grate job! i wana upgrade my old bc. can i do this at 3X7 to 1X7 but to hollow BB ?
What if I want the biggest chainring only to fit in the middle...what do I need? thanks in advance.😃
Is this the same as alivio square type hole?
No spacers to accommodate the 122 spindle bottom bracket?

Are the holes in the central star threaded for the bonnet or not?
Hello.what is differences between a shimano 9 speed casette 11-32T or a shimano casette 11-34T?

Can this be done with the claris double r2000 crankset?
Anyone know if these square bolts are any good ? regards
Hi this is fascinating. What is the offset on the new chainring? 6mm?
That chaining has no offset.
Can we use any chainring from the drive train chainrings also u know i am short on money

How do I know how small I can go with the rear cassette and screw mounts on the crank?
you have to count it with the ratio calculator or read what people use and it will be the best for Ciebie

Hi where did you get option 2 from thanks
did you use the same chain ring bolts from your old 3x chain rings for option 1?
Yes
All crank 3by can be removed??
Is it possible to use the middle spocket from the stock instead of buying a new one ?
Maybe yes, if the chain line allows but narrow wide spocket is better 😝
bullshit answer, sorry. that will not work at all. your chain will fall off before you even arrive at your hometrails
Does this work with oval or round or both?
which crank you used?

I have a 21 Speed hybrid, 1-year-old. Could i just reuse the middle ring from the crankset, All I need is the correct fitting fasteners? Then i got a 7 speed.

Hey thanks for te video, Is It posible to colócate 2 crankwheels
its work too on two wheels crank
Can you link those snail bolts/thingys
um one problem i don't see bolts anywhere on the 3x chainring
Does it work with 11 speed chains?
I'm about to do this on my older 26" full suspension trek fuel 90 with an oval 32T chainring. I have a 3x9 set up. Is it going to really suck climbing hills? I'm thinking about changing the rear cassette but figured I would try it first with the old one on there.
Great 😊
Hi, what crank brand i will buy? And which online store, thank you
I use shimano, but all cranks types with 104 BCD, you can fight used good condition and buy new deckas crank wheel 😛
what model is the crank on this one?
My wife just rides on the middle chain ring and as it has 32 teeth, could I not just keep that ring, when converting her bike? I know buying a 34 tooth chain ring would give her a greater power range but I was thinking of keeping the cost down!
yh u can mate
Sure. But it depends on if you change the rear cassette. With a modern cassette, you might have equivalent lower gears with the 34 and it might be worth changing. If you want to compare, you can find gear calculators online that will show you what the gear inches are. You just have to input the wheel size and the range for front and rear gears and it’ll show you the numbers for each gear.
You can keep the 32T but you must replace the current ring for the narrow wide ring. It will prevent a chain from falling of the ring.
The narrow wide single chain ring helps to stop chain drop. The stock chainring with definitely work for street riding but on rough trails and hard riding in lowest and highest cassette gears you may end up with the chain trying to bounce off or “shift off” the stock chain ring.
Can you explain what's the difference between 2 options? why use different bolts in option 2? Thanks!
Chain line difference, in 2nd option i use bolts from SNAIL set from aliexpress 😉
@@lonerbikes So it's used to control the chainring offset?
And, couldn't you have connected in 2nd option with original bolts?
@@YanikBrown yes,
yes you can also use original screws, but the snail set looks better :P

what about the front derailleur can i just take it off and it will still shift properly?
If you make 1x ? Drive you can remove front derailleur because you need use narrow wide crank gear
What shimano crankset is that?
Need help with setup. I have a 3x. 48/38/28 with fixed rings. Can i buy this crank & change the 48t for a 46t . keep the 38t middle and remove the small ring . so it would be 2x - 46/38 ?? My issue is i don't have hills here and my 8speed 11/ 32 cog im always on the 18t. So i need something smaller up front so i can use all my rear gears more , or should i just go 44t 1x up front ??
Shimano CX 50 crank set is 46/36, try that
What if they're riveted in?
whats the exact model of your shimano crank? thank you
Its Shimano Acera FC-M361
does this exact method work with all shimano branded cranksets? thanks
No, you need some crank with 104BCD, to fit it with crank wheel ( deckas 104BCD)
What do you call the chainring bolts for the Option 2? I can't find any listing for it
Try to find on Aliexpress: snail bike chainring bolts
What if pins instead of bolts?
Example: my stupid altus crankset 2x???
it's riveted/non removable
nice
can i just remove the smallest and the biggest ring and keep the middle one? or i have to buy a new chainring?
If course you fucking can, imbecile.
@@Daisy-ef6bq jsjsjs me refería a si lo puedo agarrar con un taladro salame rodilla seca
What if u have a 94+96BCD chainring is that fit to a crank that 104BCD?
No, you need crank with 104BCD
Which is flush with the holes
What's the actual benefit of this conversion? I have two chain rings and i use bigger one mostly of the times and small one when climbing steep sandy hills. Works perfectly. I know one ring looks cool and neat but is it actually wort it? As i like to get faster on the tarmac and i like steep climbs too.
Cleaner look, mechanical simplicity, slight weight saving and streamlining of the controls.
If your range works for you, it's hard to argue for the expense and hassle.
had you test it with oval option?
No, but its doesnt matter ,
Important here is only correct chain line 😉
Option 2 looks cool but looks like it would interfere with the chain.
can I use a normal 8speed shimano 48 chainring with a 1/8 chain with no problem?
Use a normal chain for 8speed.
Dont use singlespeed chain because its bad for chainrings 😝
Can SR Suntour XCT be changed like that?
If this crank is 104BCD - then the DECKAS gear in the video will fit
Check that this crank is 104BCD for sure,
Because the bcd of the sprocket and the crank must match- facing the holes 😉
it depends on the model of your chainset
if you have bolt on chainrings its doable, if not... than
Suntour is garbage, you don't want that crap on your bike
Option1 the best u can save weight😅
You just gave me an idea.
Great!
how to know its the perfect t?
can the group set shimano altus 3x9 can became to 1x9
if your chain line allows it I think so
narrow wide sprocket in the place of the central table top from the middle or outside depending on the chain line
@@lonerbikes
Are you switching just to be fashionable? Unless you’re changing your rear cassette to a modern cassette, you’re going to lack gears on the high and low end. If I were still racing XC, I would never go 1X; just not enough high end gears.
yes
What are the pros and cons of both options? Thanks a lot!
Mostly the con on most setups is outside the spider will cause a pretty bad chain line when in lower gears. Inside the spider which is middle ring position tends to center it better with cassette this will keep the chain line better weather in low or high gears.

I have a question is it possible 3x in front and 1x in rear ?
It does not make sense

@@lonerbikes what if we use 3 same size cog to keep chain in line
So I have to buy another chain ring can I just get the one that was already on it and put that one on and take of the other chain rings that were on it
I don’t think you have to I think he just wanted to because I’m going to try this soon
dude, its required to swap chainrings when converting a 3x crankset into 1x because the ones installed in 3x cranksets aren't narrow wide which allows the chain to be transferred to other rings in the crank while a 1x purpose built chain-ring has narrow wide teeth so that your chain wouldn't derail when trailing or going through rough terrain.
Do I have to shorten the chain if I do this and if yes by how much do I have to shorten the chain ?
@@JS-bh3fg it depends if you are willing to change your cassette from a smaller teeth count to a bigger one(ex. from 11-32T converting to 11-40T and higher). If you decide to keep your old cassette(possibly a smaller teeth size),you need to shorten your chain to keep your derailleur in tension. If you change to a bigger cassette size, you don't really need to shorten the chain pretty much.
edit: it depends on the size of your cassette and your chainring when choosing the right length of chain.
PS: if you have a medium cage derailleur, you either extend it with a goatlink/extender(downside of installing this is not having a smooth feel when shifting up/down) to accommodate a bigger cassette or the jockey rings will collide with the biggest gear of the cassette or...change to a long cage derailleur.
