    Hi Gary! As a tip to disconnect the quick link, instead of using a piece of rigid wire, try using a longer old derailleur wire, hook it in the quick link and pull from both sides, usually you can do by hand no problems. I think you can find a video somewhere if this is not clear. This is great cause you can do it even on trails, I always like to carry with me a piece of generic bike wire just in case I brake the derailleur somehow and I've to go chainless!

      Good idea! I actually used a brake cable but I will try the gear cable next time!! Might be easier! Thanks for sharing the tip 🤗🤗

    I did a 1x conversion on a Trek 6500 bike, worked flawless, combined around $27.00 all in, flawless and surprisingly the bike is noticeably lighter, you wouldn't think that but it is as for the bike it's around 20 to 25 years old, bought used on Facebook Marketplace for, all in $250, one problem I ran into, actually two, the screw that attaches the derailleur hanger just turns, can't unmount the hanger, the second thing is the rear derailleur itself, the bolt the screw's onto the hanger proper is stripped, either that or there's some unknown way that that derailleur mounts to said hanger (Shimano Deore LX RD-mx550) but yea, I LOVE this minor change out, the gearing it spot on and considering I essentially guessed it turned out surprisingly well!

    Did that on mine too, same chainring but 38 tooth. Works great. Impressed what you get for 12€! Used little spacers on my cranks to fit it right and works with my chain line :)

    I watched this anyways thinking I already knew everything about 3x to 1x conversion but was happy to learn new things, like filing down a crankset and removing the dial from the shifter. The latter is helpful as I have a 7speed shifter that is difficult to fit next to brakes on swept back bars - might try to remove the dial.

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 роки тому +1

      Nice!! Ahh yeah I’m actually working on a bike where the dial is in the way with the swept back bars too! Need to sort it out. Glad you like the video cheers!

    It's cool that you were able to keep your original derailleur with this conversion. My bike still has the original XTR derailleur, and I'm hoping I can retain it if/when I do a 1x9 conversion. Do you have an update on the chain, and whether or not it ever dropped?

    hey man, loved the video. What's the reason you're running a NW in front? wouldn't one of the original chainrings work well?

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers man! Running a narrow wide helps keep the chain on - you could run the original but there’s more of a chance the chain will pop off

    If I use a 10-speed cassette (removing 1 cog) on my 7-speed hub, resulting in a 9-speed cassette, do still have to use a 10-speed derailleur and shifter or can I just use a 9-speed derailleur/shifter? Thanks.

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  Рік тому +1

      I would say use your 10 speed shifter because the pull ratio would match the gap between each cog on your cassette 👍

    Pretty sweet. I did the same to my 1982 Klein Pinnacle. It looks good with a single blue anodized chain ring, blue vintage Sun rims, with a matte black powder coat by Palms Cycle in West Los Angeles. Only thing is that it would not command the price of a resale, for those wanting an original Klein. Thanks for the video.

      @@garysprojects I wondered how to get the gear spaced closer to the shell.
      That explains more; because hard crossing the gearing from an outside ring, is not conducive shifting to get low gears running smooth:
      that will get more than 1/4" inward. -Good lesson!
