My grandmother made this icing all the time when I was growing up. Loved it so much and it always makes me think of her. I need to make it again, myself! Thanks for reminding me🙃
My aunt always made a maraschino cherry cake ( with this lovely 7 minute frosting on it ) for my birthday. I am 81 and I remember exactly how it tasted. Obviously, my aunt is gone,& I was blessed with her beautiful cake stand that displayed MANY of my birthday cakes. Thank you , Tammy for bringing back such sweet memories with your 7 minute frosting ♥️ 🎂👍🏼
My very favorite cake, my mother would always make one for my birthday except when she bought one at a bakery, thanks for showing the recipe for this icing
This brought back lovely memories. When I was raising my kids (during the sixties), I made chocolate cake with this frosting at least once a week. We had dessert after every dinner but in those days, kids ran all over creation to work off calories and adults were required to do much more physical labor. These days, I work less, still eat dessert, and it's worth being a bit of a chonk.
My mom didn't cook any more than she absolutely had to whether it was dinner or dessert. We very very rarely had dessert. This was back in the 60's too.
@@dm8553 My mother didn't cook either but I was in foster care a lot where women DID make nice meals three times a day. This was back in a time when people took children in out of the goodness of their hearts and not for profit. I decided at a young age that, if I had children, I would cook for them and generally just take good care of them in every way. Some people just aren't 'born cooks' but you can still get a decent meal into a kid using fish sticks, french fries, and even a canned or frozen vegetable. Store bought cookies can be a dessert. I LOVED to cook and bake and had the privilege (for a while) of being a stay at home Mom. I'd usually start prepping for dinner at about ten in the morning.
Ya'll must have been those "Leave it to Beaver" families that I saw on TV! We had a cake when we made it. But there were no desserts most of the time. Didn't you have a job??? 😂😂😂
This is the one cake my mom always made when I was little. Before they started making icing for sale in the grocery stores. One of the best memories I have of my mom. God rest her soul. Thanks Tammy for cooking like momma did!!!
This brought back memories of when I was a child and my grandmother used to treat us to her devil's food cake with this fluffy white icing. I will definitely make this for my grandchildren. Thanks for sharing this recipe with all of us. You are the best.
Omg..I have been looking for this Icing Recipe for yrs..My Husband's Mother use to make it for him when he was a little boy and he loves it..thank you so much for sharing!!
We LOVE 7 minute frosting. My mother-in-law gave me this recipe over 50 years ago. My husband’s favorite cake is white cake, lemon curd between the layers, 7 minute frosting and then covered with coconut. I make this for his birthday and at Christmas. Soooooooooooooo delicious. It would also be great on that chocolate cake. I can’t wait to see your new house. 😊
I watched this to remember how my own precious Mother would take the extra time to make this particular icing for birthday cakes for me because I loved it from the first time I saw it (that shiny, shimmering look) and tasted that sugary deliciousness 😋 !! I have never made it myself but perhaps one of these days I will. I could actually just eat the icing all by itself but with cake is good too 😊 ❤
Thank you oh so much. I just finished making this for the first time at 75. My mother used to make devils food cake with seven minute icing for my twin brother and I for our birthdays. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and now I’m waiting for it to cool so we can eat it. You made it so easy to do.
I'm. 72. This is always going to be. My. Birthday cake. ! My mom made for it every year. !! She's. Gone. Home. But. This. Makes my. Day ! Yummy. No. Other. Icing like. It. !
This cake is like the one my Mother made for my 1st Birthday! And she made one when I got older so I could taste it and remember, so delicious! Thank you for sharing and bringing back memories of my Mother. This August she has been gone for 30 years. Miss her every day. I will be making this!
Awesome and happy birthday Tammy!! Oh my God! My Mama made this frosting and I never appreciated it until you showed us how to make it tonight! Thank you so much dear lady.
Tammy, this is one of my favorites! My grandmother made it….I MUCH prefer this on a Red Velvet Cake than the cream cheese icing. Yum! This is delicious!
Oh the memories this video brought back to me. I'm 63 yes old and when I was a child of 10 or 11 my Grandmother would spend some weekends with us. She was in her late 70's I'm guessing. Every time she spent the weekend with us she would ask me to make her a devils food cake with seven minute frosting. It is still one of my favorites. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you for the refresher. I make this icing for my pineapple cakes. I put this on before the pineapple topping. Its my favorite cake when I do eat cake which isnt often.
My mother used to make this, and I’ve been trying to find her recipe for YEARS! None of my sisters can find it, either, but I think this is the exact same recipe. Thanks so much!
@@mamawfrancy Cream of Tartar is the key. It stabilizes the egg whites do they don’t deflate. Some 7 Minute Frosting recipes don’t use it & those are the ones that will “melt” off your cake after about a day. Keeping it in the refrigerator is also helpful…but I don’t like cold cake lol
Omgggg this is the only frosting I was raised with..my mother made this on every single cake but I was ashamed of not knowing exactly how she did it..but you got it...I was always waiting next to her waiting for that first slice of cake..hahahhaaa...that is exactly what my mother use to do...and the vanilla extract...yesssssssssss omgggggggg...so delicious...thank you so much !!! A million times over!!!!
This 7 minute frosting is what I make when I make a coconut cake. My mother always made this also. I love watching your channel. I also love to cook too. I hope you and your family have a blessed week.
@@pnwlaf I ice the cake and then add the coconut spread over the icing. I do not mix the coconut into the icing just top the icing over with coconut. Have a wonderful 2023. I use a white cake mix for the cake and I put little water and boil it with coconut and then use fork to make holes all over the to top of each layer before putting the icing on.

OHMYGOSH OHMYGOSH .. you brought back some memories. I heard people talk about 7 min icing. I grew up at my grandmothers (stuck in a wheel chair) who baked cakes to supplement her SS. She made Devils Food Cake with Divinity Sticky icing. Basically, what you did above but separated into 2 bowls & 2 steps to make the icing dryer. Every year she would make me MY OWN Devils Food Cake for Christmas & my birthday. She would not let anyone touch it unless I gave permission. ( even my dad ) - Gosh, I'm so glad I saw this video.
You must be reading my mind. This afternoon I was in the baking aisle buying an Angel food cake mix and I thought about searching your channel for this 7 minute icing recipe. And here it is 🙌🏻
I love how you explain the reason why you do things a particular way and what the results can be if you don’t. Like what will cause the icing to be grainy I learned to make gravy watching your videos. I learned to cook the flour and not rush into adding the milk. I love homemade gravy and cheese sauce.
Before you put the icing on top of the cake, all the chocolate layers with icing in between reminded me of a giant Suzie-Q cake by Hostess, from back in the day, which I don't think is made anymore.
Mama made devil's food cake with 7 minute icing for my birthday every year. She made the icing crunchy outside and creamy inside.
Yummy!
Mom and Grandma made this regularly. What great memories!
