@5:06 you are absolutely correct. They are treated as garbage, but they never actually able to fully remove the excess diesel. Most people drive in the city. Valid point
Love my 6.4. Love the sound. I let it warm up. OFTEN OVERLOOKED by diesel and turbo drivers: When you're been running the vehicle hard, or even going uphill, or otherwise working that turbo, think about it. When you pull to a stop don't just shut it off instantly to save a few cents. Let that turbo spool down, cool down, at least a bit, for a minute. It stabilizes and keeps oil flowing through the bearings and won't burn up. Believe this is critical to a long life of all turbocharged engines. That's what I was taught to do with high performance aircraft engines, that's what I do with any turbo engine. And I have a few. Never replaced a turbo or had problems related to.
2008 with 200k, I'm original owner, oil changes every 6 mo with Rotella T6 and Motorcraft filter, fuel filters every 12 mo with Motorcraft, deleted, tow tune, and I drive like an old lady going to church on Sunday.
I bought a 6.4 about 5 years ago, it's not my daily driver. I use it to tow my toy hauler, flatbed and pickup big material. It was deleted/tuned early in it's life but had to be undeleted to emission it for the county I bought it in. The used car dealer threw in the stuff to delete it again. :D Other than replacing one bank of fuel injectors it's been solid and is at 175k miles.
I recently purchased a 6.4 back in October last year. I had a HD full reman of the tranny right off the jump. Truck is deleted and tuned, very strong and coming up on the first 5k oil change. Gonna change oil and fuel filters and hope it goes another 175k which is actual mileage right now. Good luck with yours!
Hey Tony, I like things you do… Anyway, consider putting a FASS or an AirDogg low pressure fuel system in the truck. Really prevents the high pressure fuel pump from working too hard… Make sure you’re putting a good fuel additive in as well. Can you tell me when your truck was built by the way? Trying to figure out when the “good” and remaining trucks were built.
The 6.4 is a strong motor. Once their deleted. I ran an 08 f550. Was a great truck when it ran right. It was an occasional use truck when i had a load that i didnt need my kw for. The problem we with it was that it sat. Ran decent when ran everyday. If it sat more than a month, limp mode issues. Mept eating injectors. Company finally got rid of it because at that point it ended up getting towed every trip out. I loved that truck, just needed to be run everyday and i think itd have been better.
despite their awful reputation, I find these engines to be very attractive. I bought me a 6.4 with over 200k on it and I love it, with some simple mods this thing is a power monster. the biggest issue with the 6.4 is quality control because most of it's parts come like 20 different companies. if you can find a 6.4 with high mileage and no blow by, you got a solid motor. if it was going to suffer from any of the issues these things suffered from it would have killed the motor before 100k.
Good day sir. You have a very good point regarding the sourcing of parts for these engines… I’m wondering if certain manufacturing dates used higher quality parts? When was yours built? Mine was built in May of 2007 so I’m wondering if mine used some later/better/left over parts from the 6.0 after many of the issues of the 6.0 were fixed?
@AllHatNoCattle13 mine was one of the last. It's a 2010. I don't know the exact date but it was one the last ones built. I am not 100% sure but I think it the last few had actual Navistar Maxx Force7 pistons with smaller lips while the first editions had Mahler pistons that were dirty cast and full of bubbles that led them to crack after enough heat cycles. Even looking at them brand new you can tell they were not very good pistons. The pistons are not interchangeable between these motors the 6.4 has a wider bore than the 6.0 so they wouldn't fit. And the Maxx Force7 and the VT are 2 different motors.
Get ready for the negative soy boy 6'4 comments. Most have never owned one and are toxic people.I have ran 6'4's for years and still love them because they're fun. Delete DPF, EGR and throw some head studs and Mahle pistons in and its ready. Good luck with your channel. Cheers.
Thanks for watch professor! Oh yes. I am prepared for the negative Nancy’s. I’m sure there are a lot of bad 6.4s out there. But I would think that the ones that are still around now must be still running strong or they wouldn’t be running at all!
In factory configuration 6.4 is a horrible design. Modded makes it barely adequate as far as reliability but if one needs to have that style ford body go for it. Just understand its a matter of when not if when left stock.
I hope it goes well, the video to me kinda sounds kinda like an attempt to justify. The late great Bill Hewitt wouldn’t even touch these after having an entire shop dedicated to fix and solve all the issues with the 6.0. I do truly hope you have zero issues with the 6.4 though!
Hi Ken! Thanks for watching! Definitely a justification video. I’m sure this video will eventually find a 6.4 hater so just wanted to explain why I bought the truck. The truck was 100% stock and I read a lot about how buying a deleted truck was questionable as well since I would be inheriting “somebody else’s problem.” But that’s also the case with buying a used vehicle as well…
it's a diamond in the rough, if you can find a good one they're not bad. it's just really hard to find a good one. these engines are like snow flakes, some could last a few 100k miles while some will shit the bed before 100k. overall the bottom end of these motors were built really tough, they could handle 1000 horsepower. just need some better pistons.
I absolutely LOVED my 05 6.0 powerstroke. Had it "bulletproofed" right after i bought it. Fantastic truck. Rode and drove better than any of my dodges ever have and im a die hard mopar guy with a bit of a ford fetish lol. The 6.4 is a goddamn engineering marvel. Much like the 6.0 for that matter. They were both WAY ahead of their time. I believe emissions crap is what really hurt those engines. Go ask a guy that works at an international/navistar shop how many 6.0 head gaskets they do... they're just going to look at you weird. Navistar designed them for totally different vehicles with totally different emissions requirements and ford goes and shoe horns them into the f series and tries to make it work...now anyone with a bit of common sense that isnt in denial can admit that the 6.0 and 6.4 have some very very very serious reliability issues and quality control issues and design flaws from factory. But my god can they make insane power and as a lifelong motorhead i cant help but admire the hell out of the tech. and engineering that went into both of these engines. Enjoy your 6.4 man. Take care of her and she'll take care of you.
I personally worked for a company who bought one new in 2008 and they went through two motors in the truck we had it go in limp mode each time and then mechanic said motor was done I’d be very curious how reliable they’d be once they are deleted ect. I will say the truck never lacked in power and was smooth while towing being an f550 I believe it was the H.O. Model I’d be very curious what the specific failure on those engines was
Hey Rad. Thanks for watching! Yes, I have heard of these trucks going through 3-4 engines before the warranty was up as well. I also drive like a grandpa and I have heard if I drive like that, that will protect the truck as well. What is your knowledge of the HO 6.4? I read there were trucks that were de-tunes down to 600 pounds of torque, compared to 650 but I am unfamiliar with an HO 6.4?
They're fine once they're deleted. Also they demand on time oil changes and the motorcraft oil and fuel filters religiously. Get one with no rust and low mileage and delete and tune it keep up maintenance and ya won't melt pistons.
Hey Klamminator. The emission systems were the largest issue these engines had. Other issues included valve covers not properly oiling the valve train, rockers, etc. radiators cracking, etc.
Another young dude trying to claim the 6.0/6.4 engines are good. Newsflash - they're shit. I have an 08 and only bought it to Cummins swap. Start saving for the Cummins swap when the 6.4 shits the bed... because it's going to. I wish it were more reliable and I wish I didn't have so many problems but they all do. The young guys think they can overcome the problems and they aren't that bad, but it's older guys live through it all and experienced all the b******* firsthand.
6.4s may not be reliable but they have some pretty good tuning potential because at least the bottom end of the motor was built to take some serious power, and it's injection system is way overkill for what it is. these motors can rip the chip without much money put into them. it's just keeping them running is what's going to cost you tons of money.
By the time you are done doing the cummins swap you could have a built 6.4 but ok… Have fun with your constant wiring issues and other stuff that comes along with it
I hated the way these things regen. newer trucks can do parked regens which is better, but the 6.4 would just clog the fuck up and if you did any stop and go it would not complete the regen so then you got to a point where the truck is constantly in regen and that was a big thing that would kill these motors.
So I disagree with your statement on the 6.4l that engine is absolutely garbage. We bought a 2008 450 new. No mods dealership serviced every time on time. Used to pull 45ft camper and 38ft horse trailer and a boat during the summer months. This truck was used to pull not a mom wagon as you say. This truck listed till about 65k miles and blew the motor. New motor cost $22k as it was 1 month out of warranty. Ford should be required to payback every 6.4l owner as they knew that motor is junk.
