Unfortunately that is true but it's not necessarily Ford's fault. Thank the US Gov for the emissions BS that forced them to re-invent the wheel. The 7.3 would still be selling like gang-busters if it was still allowed to be made.
This channel has convinced me that 7.3 powerstoke is the goat of diesel engines. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2005 ford excursion with the 6.0 until I found this channel.
I just bought an f250 2003 7.3, very well taken care of no rust highway driven 330k miles. Runs like a champ, I am not doing shit to it but maintaining. I'm hoping I can save some money in the long run. If I could though a 6.0 Dave built would be bad ass I bet.
Ive been to the late Bill Hewitt's shop in Buford who was one of the original mechanics on youtube 15 years ago. Like Dave, people all over the country used to take their trucks to him
20 years ago there was an article in a diesel power magazine that compared all diesel fuel additives and Walmart 2 stroke oil won. I have been adding the same 2 stroke oil in my 04 cummins for lubricity ever since and still going strong at 580k.
We had a 1995 powerstroke 7.3 van, tuned with light mods, still going almost 30 years. We also had a 2005 E350 with the 6.0, its sitting junked for the past 10 years after a lifter failure.
Okay but the additive in your fuel in your 6.0 powerstroke never makes it to your hpop. Fuel never runs in your hpop(injection pump). May save a lift pump though And will lube fuel side of injectors.
We bought a 2003 Excursion with one of the first 6.0L Powerstroke engines. It had the triangular shaped EGR cooler which was a lot better than the round one that came out later that year and would leak coolant into the intake. We put over 265,000 miles on it without issue but we serviced at Ford without fail. They even replaced all the injectors at 100,000 under a recall but really, the truck was bullet proof.
I know this is not recommended on a modern engine because it will destroy the emmisions systems. But on some old engines back in the day especially in competition where these engines are heavily stressed. one trick we used to do is dump some two stroke oil into the fuel. Even on a four stroke engine. The added lubricity actually lowered cylinder temps and reduced friction. Things lasted a lot longer under those extreme conditions And the added lubricity in some cases increased horsepower. Do NOT do this to a modern engine. You'll destroy your emissions system. All this talk about lubricity and fuel additives just reminded me of that trick from back in the day. Just thought I'd share. 🙂
@matthewmoore757 I agree with you. Back in 2008 I ran used vegetable oil in my 1993 6.5. I thinned it 30% with kerosene. My truck ran so much better quieter and better throttle response on my fuel recipe. Yes I did strain it, filtered it both with a standard filter and a water blocking filter. I credit the extra lubricity for the better performance I experienced. The only reason I stopped using vegetable oil was because it was getting real cut throat out there. My exhaust did smell somewhat like french fries. The only thing I had to add was diesel-kleen cetane boost.
Yeah I see guys dumping all their old motor oil in their fuel tank on the 7.3s. Runs great no issues. Then there is WMO which is pretty popular with these trucks, although if you want to use straight vege oil or old cooking oil from restaurants you will want to get a centrifuge for about 2-3k. Then you’re set
@@formula19 Yeah, i wouldn't personally do that. Because some issues you can have with burning old oil, is the carbon deposits. You can get a build up of it around your piston rings and valves, and you can stick a ring or burn a valve. It's not the best idea. Old motor oil likely has some fine metal particles in it too. And soot. Not what you want running through a modern fuel system. On an older Diesel like an old Detroit or something like that, Go for it. Those old engines will eat just about anything. Modern Diesel engines are to darn fragile. Much of that can be blamed on the EPA though.
@ I agree it never sounded like a good idea despite how many people I see do it. I run archoil additive every oil change and their fuel treatment every fill up. Never looked back after.
Now days, I send them on their way, my customers never have the money and its a 6.blow needs a new engine ,im impressed with your shop and the high quality work y'all Do, well done 👍🏼
Thing needs a 6.4 starter.Theres a leak in the high pressure side, likely cup nipples.. a significant oil leak would cause enough air turbulence to inflate a glove on the oil fill. Plus they all have some kind of blow by cold. Because thats how are. Also, Chances are if it has that aftermarket degas bottle, it’s already studded.

Did you check the high pressure oil system for 500 PSI? FICM sync? 48 volts at the FICM? Glow plus getting power? The 6.0 doesn’t have the high pressure CP-4 pump. It uses HEUI system.
I agree with this, I understand it’s “staged” but, there was a lot more that needed to be checked before I’d deem an engine lol. I agree it does sound like it has no compression, atleast run a compression test on film. This is a business understand that lol.

Dave I have a 1995 international s1600 dump truck that has the ford 6.9 v8 non turbo the engine will start and run a few seconds and then shut down regardless of how much pedal you give it. Idle or higher rpm it runs about the same amount of time. The mechanical fuel pump and filters and water separator are all good and have been changed. The injection pump only has 1 electrical wire for the fuel shut off and it seams to be working , we even ran a 12 volt from battery to it incase it was losing power, but that didn't change anything eather. It is pushing fuel to injectors and injectors are passing pop test so it has to be something in the injection pump that's causing it to shut fuel off or suck air so that it runs out of fuel and shuts down. But then again it only runs a few seconds each time you try to start it and sometimes you have to try a few times. It has a stanadyne DB2 Pump on it. I think the fuel shut off is dropping out. Any thoughts on your end would be helpful as I hate to pay for a pump rebuild if not necessary central Georgia watcher of your videos.
6.0s don’t deserve the bad reputation they got tbh. I’ve seen plenty of stock 6.0s with 4-500k miles and still running great. Yeah they might have a new FICM, HPOP, or whatever. 6.4s are way worse. I’ll take a well maintained, well taken care of 6.0 over a 7.3 any day of the week

I want to see that engine torn apart, bet it's fine, just been spraying either in it too long, so the rings are dry. Is there any smoke out the tail pipe?
Hello Dave, I've been watching your videos and you were cutting a key way in a crank where the pins had sheared of the crank. You called it a woodruff key when it was just a plan key and the key way cut with a 4 flute endmill. A woodruff key is a disc that is cut in half and the key way is cut with a woodruff cutter. For future reference.
Truck owner: You made a very wise choice by towing your truck to this shop. I live in LA and I exactly know how shops operate here. I'm lucky enough to have a small home-based shop and fix most everything on my family's cars. Of course I don't have a full shop equipment, but If I ever have to tear down an engine like this, I'm gonna take it out of state for sure.
Using starting fluid on a HEUI injector system is a big no no. Will blow injector o-rings (sealing the injector between itself and the injector cup in the head)
We got 2 6.0s, live em when they run right, one is fully built and barely runs right but when it does its a monster, clean oil and clean coolant do not neglect these trucks with cheap oil filters ect, no cheap filters!
Dave, ive gotta comment on this one. Is the motor worn out? Yes, its got 350k on it and blow by. But you have another issue. Even with low compression it should be pouring smoke out of the exhaust.
Check your coolant reservoir bottles more often. The crazy heatwaves over the summer caused a lot of water to evaporate more quickly. It happened me and my Accord. I never had a leak or coolant issue and almost overheated one day waiting in a drive-thru line. Turned out it was low on coolant. I also noticed my shop van also was super low on coolant and confirmed there were no issues with the coolant system.
If there’s a hole in your piston you’d have fuel diluting the oil. So another way to check a box without tearing apart is an oil analysis. Or by taste if you’re good 😂
After hearing the customers concern, I would be very curious to see how the cylinder walls look on that particular engine. I’m willing to bet they look fine. I have worked on countless 6 liters over the years, and I’ve actually worked on maybe half a dozen that sound exactly like this one in the video. You can hear the injector clatter when cranking, indicating it is receiving sufficient high-pressure oil and voltage to the injectors to fire but obviously has low compression which is causing it to not start. The trucks that i have seen do this show about 180-200 psi of compression on all 8 cylinders initially and my trick has always been to remove glow plugs and add some atf or motor oil to the cylinders and just crank them over. Some trucks will start after 1 set of dead batteries others may take 3 sets. But once they are running the excessive crank case pressure is gone and the compression on all cylinders are back to normal range of 375-400psi. for some reason, I’ve seen it only on 05-07 trucks that sit a while and have even experienced it twice on 05-07 trucks that just had the head gaskets replaced. every truck that I have personally seen do it started eventually with enough cranking. Personally, I believe this truck is one of those cases after hearing the customer's concern. My idea behind it is the rings dry out over time and allow bypassing of compression into the crank case. I may be wrong on that theory. I am located in California Aswell and all of my examples are California trucks. Maby the hot and dry climate has something to do with it? Using this truck as an example, I would be curious if you’re able to determine what actually causes this issue on some 6liters!
Fuel additive is so Important, along with good Oil, and “HOT BATTERIES” when owning a Diesel. Maintenance on a Diesel vs Gas is Apples and Bananas!!! Before you Purchase a Diesel, take whatever Dave charges, and save yourself a big giant headache!!!
I loved the channel for the honesty and integrity. I realize one should be allowed to monetize their success, but peddling an unproven “secret sauce” for multiple times the cost of a competitor is a slimy thing to do. Prices are from websites (actually cheaper elsewhere) ignore shipping and tax. Your stuff 34c per gallon treated. Hot shots EDT 5c/gal (double dose 10c/gal). Archoil 11c/gal (double dose 22c/gal). Are you saying your stuff is worth three times the cost of a double dose of hot shots EDT?
Do you guys over in the USA not have an option for premium diesel? Here in the UK, and across the rest of europe, most of the big hitters like Shell/BP/ESSO ect offer regular diesel and in addition to that also a premium diesel option. So Shell for example offer V Power in gas (petrol) and also diesel, a higher quality diesel fuel with an enhanced additives package to help keep your engine clean and improve its performance.
The 6.9 IDI and 7.3 IDI were two of the best diesel engines ever designed in my opinion. Simple underpowered and built to last millions of miles with minimal maintenance. Once they got into the 6-liter junk 6.4 junk. Everybody I've met that's how to 6 l or a 6.4 either absolutely loves it or they say it was the biggest piece of crap they've ever owned in their life
I have an '04 6.0 with 221k....it has been deleted but that's it. You can not boost that motor without eventual failure. It has to be stock or do ALL the bulletproof shit.
Yep. I have an 07 350. Having issues with the VGT turbo. Needs a new one. And I got it about a year ago so I can't really find a way to egr block it anymore.
Well, what do you think you’re 30-year-old truck is gonna last long enough for you to give it to your grandkid that’s what happens when you don’t properly. Take care of a vehicle and you drive it like shit.😂 I’ve seen more than 10 of them trucks at my work that I got over 300,000 miles on it never had oil problems never had transmission problems never had motor problems so must be something in the air up here in the Midwest😂
@ they where junk. Only a few cases of what your describing. Just cuz you hear of one, doesn’t mean the rest of us didn’t get screwed by international and Ford.
I was pumping gas the other day and I seen a guy dumped a whole bottle of automatic transmission fluid into his gas tank and said it's works better lubrication
From my experience with 6.0 and owned plenty, dealt with a lot of issues, you really need to hooked up the block heater, get the engine nice and hot and spray wd40 or ether. The heat helps the 6.0s, it could be the piston rings are gummed up from not changing the oil as often as the truck sits. Plugging the block heater will help these trucks fire up easier. The 6.0 doesnt do well parked, they really like to be on the highways towing. As for the heads, cracking... many used to swap out the regular 6.0 heads, for the F550 6.0 heads
I understand the man. So many dirty, scummy shops. Im happy to pay decent money for honest work. When it can be found. Utah is just a bit far from Atlanta.
All diesel is the same no matter where you get it the problem lies in the tanker trucks or the physical underground storage tanks. Most of the time tanker trucks don’t clean out the diesel compartment after dropping a gas grade wether it’s 87, or 91/93 they will fill the compartment with diesel on top of the gas that was remaining in there and will cause it to be a “hot load”
My worse days as a mechanic was any day I had to tell someone the needed a motor and all people in my area want to afford is a junk yard swap and they NEVER understand that you are buying a used engine that may have issues or be wrong for the application and the vehicle sits and ends up costing more than the rebuild or more than the reman …. Hidden cost of going the “cheap” route it’s not always cheap and it’s almost never faster.
How about using combustive silicone spray instead of starting fluid to start diesels? I've heard it's characteristics are closer to diesel, higher pre-ignition temp
@@baitse7676 That's why this truck won't start - it doesn't know where it is. Probably cam or crank sync, which he should have checked before spaying quick start into it.
sounds like weak battery to begin with the low pressure dummy gauge doesnt read the high oil pressure. getting reading on the high pressure oil, icp and ipr. do high pressure oil leak check - could be a simple standpipe and dummy plug. High oil pressure needs to be greater than 500 psi to start firing the injectors. IPR duty cycle not at 85% cranking otherwise its a high oil pressure leak check ficm main and logic power Motorcraft oil filter and cap check fuel pressure too wouldnt jump to blown headgasket or blown engine
lol, my 07 lariat outlaw did this a few days ago … drove home but was idling poorly from work and won’t restart. Turns over fine. I’m not sure it’s worth trying to fix
I bought a 2006 f250 years ago with a bad motor Mobile and US purchased a low miles Ford remanufactured out of a crashed truck. Installed it in my 2006 and it sounded exactly like that but after some cranking and a few squirts of WD-40 fired right up has been running 5 years strong I assume since the engine had been sitting up for approximately a year the lifters were holding valves open a touch
I would have also checked cam and crank position sensors. If the computer doesn't know where they are it will not fire even with quick start - which really is a last resort in my world.
$45,000 replacement. Injector failure(s)....caused by stiction, piston(s) with hole burned thru. Block ruined. Boat anchor. Put a 12 valve Cummins in it

How much Cosby sauce do you give it all of it?😂
How about a update to all your guessing ? Ever here of Forscan ?
We got 2 6.0s, live em when they run right, one is fully built and barely runs right but when it does its a monster, clean oil and clean coolant do not neglect these trucks with cheap oil filters ect, no cheap filters!
I've worked at shops that made me do just 1 piston in the 6.0 and luckily they didn't come back.

Customer service 😊

Man I love the videos you guys put out
I just bought flash light can’t wait to get it.
Flash lights are cool.
I would've hoped for a compression test before pulling the engine! At very LEAST a relative compression test on the laptop..
Not a mechanic here. Why would you want a relative compression test on an engine that is pumping air mixture directly into the crankcase?
Waste of time. Just hearing it crank for 3 seconds you know that motor has to come out.
4:15 the background 👌🏻
The 6.9 IDI and 7.3 IDI were two of the best diesel engines ever designed in my opinion. Simple underpowered and built to last millions of miles with minimal maintenance. Once they got into the 6-liter junk 6.4 junk. Everybody I've met that's how to 6 l or a 6.4 either absolutely loves it or they say it was the biggest piece of crap they've ever owned in their life
My first guess is rats or harness erosion rubbing on block or exhaust
I have an '04 6.0 with 221k....it has been deleted but that's it. You can not boost that motor without eventual failure. It has to be stock or do ALL the bulletproof shit.
Dave’s side kick looks like our sports guy on Ch.3 evening news in Phx
I just completed therapy after owning a 2007 6.0. That’s all I can say about that…..
glad to hear your recovery is going well, praying for you. 🙏
If my cars ever need a engine rebuild it’s coming to you guys! Cars are sentimental and mean a lot to us, I’m only trusting y’all to get it done righ
Bring your line of credit.
The old Billy Squire song comes to mind- sroke me stroke me..stroke! stroke!
The golf cart steal the show 😅 kind of impress
You should make a video of all the sounds engines make, that’s funny!😂
I was pumping gas the other day and I seen a guy dumped a whole bottle of automatic transmission fluid into his gas tank and said it's works better lubrication
Ehhh, idk theres conditioners in there, it's hydrollic fluid not a combustible...
I put a few drops on my model train tracks, keeps the dirt from building up and less track cleaning. That dudes injectors are shot
@@feminazislayer you dont think trans fluid will ignite? You are dead wrong my friend.
I love your little red tow vehicle
Man, I can’t believe that golf cart dragged that thing in there.
Depends on the slope.
Maybe from the parking spot to the garage is 1ft down
Those 6.0 ford's were on their last leg when they were brand new off the lot.
Dave does so much duramax rebuilds he's probably happy to do something else
Please Please!! Put that on a t-shirt, “Just for pisses and giggle” 😂
Blessing for all
I understand the man. So many dirty, scummy shops. Im happy to pay decent money for honest work. When it can be found. Utah is just a bit far from Atlanta.
Lately I’ve noticed a big uptick in in-video advertising and associated product peddling. Then have to listen to YT on top of that.
“For pistons & giggles” hahaha
Beautiful shop ,
All diesel is the same no matter where you get it the problem lies in the tanker trucks or the physical underground storage tanks.
Pre-ignition in a diesel? Lmao how would that be physically possible?
@@OtisFlint knock? diesels have knock too, it's all about injection timing
@@baitse7676 That's why this truck won't start - it doesn't know where it is. Probably cam or crank sync, which he should have checked before spaying quick start into it.
Im sure he is glad Dave cooked the glowplugs with the ether
@@jeffreyzimmerman2553 Actually the ether never made it that far!!!!
@@josephward6422 Correct, he'd have to do it after the air filter. It never made it.
I want the powerstroke turbo but front side with eltric conversation back side America has a audi way😂
🎶Driving down the street in my 6.0. Blowing a gasket, needing a Tow.🎶
Check the spark plugs and distributor
In a diesel truck?? 😮: 😊
@Amarillobymorning777 yeah, they're just harder to find
This is the same guy on tiktok that said, "It's bad to let your diesel idle to warm up in cold weather 😂😂😂😂😂.
sounds like weak battery to begin with
the low pressure dummy gauge doesnt read the high oil pressure.
getting reading on the high pressure oil, icp and ipr. do high pressure oil leak check - could be a simple standpipe and dummy plug. High oil pressure needs to be greater than 500 psi to start firing the injectors. IPR duty cycle not at 85% cranking otherwise its a high oil pressure leak
check ficm main and logic power
Motorcraft oil filter and cap
check fuel pressure too
wouldnt jump to blown headgasket or blown engine
We shall see when the customer gives the go-ahead.
That's why they are called 6.BLOW!! Good when they're good and not when they're now
lol, my 07 lariat outlaw did this a few days ago … drove home but was idling poorly from work and won’t restart. Turns over fine. I’m not sure it’s worth trying to fix
RIP Bill Hewitt.
😂😂😂
New set of plugs and wires and clean the points?
been using optilube stuff for decades. multiple diesels past 300k
Sprayed thru the air intake?? 🎉
@Amarillobymorning777 yes

Either that or stuck rings, but this was not a thorough diagnosis.
@@garrisonstatt5838 I'm curious if there will be a video of what the actual problem was
Replace oil pump and mount it in easy to replace spot since you are pulling the cab and engine.
You're thinking oil cooler, the HPOP is driven off the crank.
@ your right
C'mon Dave, you know better than to spray starting fluid into a diesel. It had an obvious compression skip.
I would have also checked cam and crank position sensors. If the computer doesn't know where they are it will not fire even with quick start - which really is a last resort in my world.
I used to have these POSs at UPS. I have seen about everything go wrong on them.
$45,000 replacement. Injector failure(s)....caused by stiction, piston(s) with hole burned thru. Block ruined. Boat anchor. Put a 12 valve Cummins in it
Surprised they didn’t check ICP, IPR, and fuel pressure. 6.0 diag is unique and different.
I know the problem without finishing the video.... California plates means emmisions intact.
lol for reals I live in the Bay Area And man this smog emission here is getting harder and harder straight bs and trust me don’t respond with you get what u vote for cause I would never vote for some bullshit like smog
