This video, along with the "designing wallets", and the "Pink Tote-bag" videos, have been the BESTt of all!! Seeing the procedure of how the patterns are made, cluing us in on what can be considered "standard" dimensions and allowances, etc. has been magnificently helpful. ...and by the way... I've adopted your stitching technique as well for almost all tasks done with the stitching chisel, and using the pony when awl work is called for. MANY THANKS!!!
I know I'm digging up an old video, but I just wanted to thank you for the amazing content! I was inspired to start leathercrafting thanks to your content and now I'm to the point where when I see those stitching chisel marks line up perfectly in the middle, I get goosebumps ;) TLDR, thank you. xD
Hi. thanks for the video . at the 2:28 you said 9and 3 quarters and 9 and 3 4 quarters . and appears you wrote the same thing . i got confused there . please help thanks
I want to thank you, not just for all your wonderful videos but also for getting me out of a minor fix. I hit a spot where I couldn't use my stiching pony, I remembered your video on how you stich. Now I dont use the pony anymore. Lol. Thank you
Your new hammer is very cool - love your video's - can you do a video when you order from Weaver and have a piece of leather split into multiple pieces. Thanks!!
I wish I Had seen this before I made mine, now I have to try it with this Expedition Leather! Looks amazing. What kind of cloth are you using for burnishing the edges?
@@scarlethenderson6510 it wouldn’t damage the batteries because there’s no ferrous “magnetic” metals in them. If you had a really huge magnet it may be possible to damage the data on the hard drive, but it would have to be WAY bigger than the magnets used for something like this. In fact, it would have to be so big and powerful that it would be more dangerous to your fingers than your computer.
Really beautiful. On my list and see it doubling as a document case. Will explore using Kangaroo hid, maybe just for one thickness. Thanks and Cheers from "Down Under"
I’d be inclined to cut a quarter inch strip of doubled up leather, and make a welt (is that the right term?) for additional thickness. It would also add a bit more rigidity to the structure of the bag. Maybe a single 5/8” strip doubled over? Beautiful bag! I’m going to try this. Might add a pocket for a charger. And a handle, perhaps. Or not. 🤗
We're looking for a parallel line, not just a line - so it's not really a case of the definition of a line. If you only do two points measured from the first line and one is off (at all), you're not going to draw a parallel line. The third point is to guarantee you've got a parallel line, sometimes I'll do 4 or 5 points if I'm cutting a very long piece
@@Corter I understand. This is a least squares regression. Thank you this has both answered my question and solved some of the issues I've been having as a maker. I've been measuring using a square all this time and felt like I've needed 3 hands. Putting 3 or 4 dots and drawing regression is less painful and at least as accurate. Thanks again!
I’m trying to apply this approach for a Kindle case. The Kindle is only 3/16” thick and the width is 4 7/8” wide. What’s your recommendation on how wide to cut the leather? I wasn’t super clear on how to figure out the width with the need for sewing room. Thanks!
Yeah totally could have... but I don’t think it was intended to use a liner until the weight of the leather became apparent, and you normally wouldn’t use a liner for thicker leather weights, which is more accessible for the average leather crafter. This method does show how you can protect the contents from the metal snaps when there is no liner, which is super useful in a number of applications. As you point out though, when using a liner there are better ways for more advanced leather crafters to hide them. Add the base of the snap first, add the liner, and then figure out where the cap of the snap belongs on the flap last. You can also get real fancy and hide the cap of the snap by attaching it to the liner before installing it, which would be especially good for magnets like some other posters have suggested... But again snaps are accessible for most Leathercrafters, and won’t risk harm to electronic devices.
Yep! You can do that as well, I just wanted to show how to do it if someone was using a single thick piece of leather instead of a lined piece. We also have another laptop case video where we do a more military style strap closure as well, and you could use the full leather sliding closure from the wet molded bag video, or magnets - lots and lots of options. I personally just use a slip case with no flap at all myself :)
Keep watching these videos. And others. Pick a small project to start with. I bought a “kit” from amazon with tons of odds and ends for tools. I bought cheap scrap leather in 10# lots. My first projects were making cases and containers for my tools. Sleeves for knives, a needle holder, roll ups for punches and other tools, etc. as you learn, replace the tools you use the most with better quality options. I’ve been doing leather work for 5-6 years I think. I’ve got a lot of tools now. I built my own stitching cradle. Enjoy it! Great hobby.
i really don't like the look of it. The better way would have been to install the snaps before glueing the two parts together but for ease of use i'd rather have some strong flat magnets embedded between the two layers. All of this is just my opinion and preferences. The snaps ended up looking like nipples xD Edit: Would have added a "pull tab" in the front facing the opposite of the flap so you could pull on that while taking out the laptop too.
@@rishabhshukla5354 of course! that's why i added: "All of this is just my opinion and preferences. " Each design and product is what the maker envisions, other than that it all comes down to personal preferences and taste. There is no right or wrong here

this looks like chrome tanned leather just by softness. i am not saying it is, it just looks like it and i dont understand how did you cut it with a knife. becaus when i tried to do the same with a crome tan, the leather always how do i say... streched? and made my cut awful
Hey. Thank you for the tutorial. Q: does this leather require a conditioner like mink oil, neets feet or some type of cream? 🤔 It really looks good. Depending upon how much it costs, I'd be willing to try this tutorial.

That is amazing leather. Maybe thats why it is priced the way it is.
If I wanted to make a phone case would I follow these same instructions? Thanks for the vids, theyre amazing and sooo helpfull!
Same concept. Measure carefully, and if plan your closures in advance, you can have the base of the snap (male end) between the layers of leather.
I just learn a great tip from you today, add the numbers to get the thickness of the side.Thank You

When will the Corter Pounder be available for order?
Nice design sir thanks for giving such a great idea 👌
hey! amazing sleeve! could you make a pattern please? i even ready to buy it
Awesome video. How to add a strap to it would be a good follow up video.

It’s just some pieces of canvas material. Works well.
using magnets for the lid would also good idea
I was wondering about that would magnets damage the batteries in the laptop

One additional consideration would be to make the case even larger to accommodate having a USB dongle in (like for a wireless mouse)
You should make a Master class course. I’d buy it. Would love to start doing this.
