Despite the hiccups, this really does feel like a love letter to the northwoods. As a long time Wisconsinite, it definitely warms my heart. Thanks for documenting this journey!
I move to western Chicago beginning of 2023 from having grown up out west: thank you for these videos highlighting just how much of a treat I’ll find moving out there. I’m also happy I won’t be the only other SS’er too!
Goooooossssshhhhhh this was so good Neil!! I am eternally bummed I couldn’t make the trip but so stoked I got to live it through your video. Much love!!
Great video. As someone who lived and cycled in Houghton Mi, (the U.P.) for 20 years I can concur that the scenery , forests and trails are awesome - the only caveat - in the summer!
YES! great country. best people. tough climate. love how the spring has all the hints of autumn colors. folks should be sure to dance with Floydian Slip and the best local friends at a pub between Cornucopia and Washburn. great show here. dance and live long!
ayyyy my home state! done a variation of this route many times. live out west now and people always asking about my stormy!! so cool you shedding some light on an underrated and quirky part of the country!
This is great, we're hoping to do some of this route in late summer/early fall! Took a week bikepacking trip around Chequamegon last summer and can't wait to go back!
I always had a feeling you were from Wisconsin. I spent my childhood (and adulthood now) playing in this part of the state. Beautiful! Can't wait to ride this
Man, I practically grew up in Island Lake! Willy’s Still has been our spot forever, sucks it was closed when you went out as there is literally nothing up there. Great video
Hey Neil, we were just wrapping up our 7 day tour when we saw you riding out of Hurley. Figures that in this epic backwoods adventure we would pass each other on one of the few stretches of urban highway. Would have loved to had opportunity to stop and chat a bit. We started in Ironwood and road counter clockwise. That was quite the storm on Thursday evening. It only lasted a bit over an hour at the Stockbridge Farm Campground but it packed a wallop in that time - hail included. We missed out on Delta Diner as they were still in their early season hours - a common theme we discovered. No matter what day it was, that was the day the establishment wasn't open. Even the Pizza in Cable was closed but "The Portage" was a nice substitute. We did happen across the Benoit Cheese Shop - a true Oasis in what felt like the middle of nowhere. We spent a night at R.O.A.M campground south of Cable in the heart of CAMBRA - what a wonderful setup the owner has created there. Heading east out of there we opted for some of the gravel FS roads instead of the singletrack - it was spectacular as I imagine the trails were. We too were disappointed Willy's Still was closed as we swatted bugs and ate our pbj on the porch. You guys will have to get back there to enjoy the Bayfield Peninsula area that you missed. It is a bit different flavor of riding than the some of the other parts. I echo your sentiments - this is one ride to not rush as there are so much you might miss if you do. I live in the UP in Houghton MI and I was a bit afraid this route would feel too much like my own backyard. While some of it felt very familiar, it was unique in its own way and it is so much about your mates that you share the adventure with. Looks like I have to get back down there so I can hit the Delta Diner when its open. Regarding the comment about leaving a vehicle for the week: I often will start/stop a ride staying at mom and pop motel. Typically, these establishments are rather inexpensive and will allow you to leave your vehicle in their lot for the week.
Man1 That looked like an awesome ride! Having grown up in the heat & humidity of the Southeast, the Northwoods have always held a bit of allure for me. And now i want to go bike riding there, too! Thanks for sharing!
I had this route on my to-do list this summer, but decided against it when I started getting nervous about finding somewhere to park for a week and wondering if someone was going to steal my cat off the car. Maybe I'm just being over-paranoid. Also - I really like this format. Thanks.
I live in Duluth and have explored the gravel around Cable. Awesome too see this video and get inspired for more exploring. Love the footage! What CAMBA singletrack did you guys ride?
very nice.. but the video felt rushed like the journey was... slow down guys. you never see hikers running around trying to get the vacation finished as quick as possible 🤣 loving the channel... bless up
Pretty safe to leave your bike for a short time in the Wisconsin northwoods. I never bring a lock bikepacking in that area. If I’m n a larger town just leave it in front of the window.
@@BIKEPACKINGcom oh yeah that's what really would loved to do in the US fish there the Rivers in the so "called fly over States" defo not Las Vegas or the other typical Tourist stuff! Be one in nature the must be just Mega! Here in Germany on a Trip i always got a travelrod Pike Spiningrod or a Travelrod Trout Spinningrod with me and a Folding Net a few lures and i'm fishing! This bunch ways 2kg but Boy have i got fun!
It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Thanks! Gorgeous area! Yeah, all those bugs would make my trip miserable... everything LOVES to bite me for some reason 😞 And dudes...skidding is so UN COOL and damaging to the trails... PLEASE don't advocate that.
The audio levels are messed up, the voice-over is too quiet. So if the volume is adjusted for the voice, then viewers get hit with a piece of music that is too loud every time the narrator stops talking. And if adjusted for the music - can't hear the voice. Thus watching it requires constant playing with the volume "knob", which is quite annoying. :) Good stuff otherwise. Ticks are scary.

This part of Wisconsin really reminds me of Southern Ontario where I grew up. Which I love.
Very cool and great video! Your way of reporting and explaining is perfect👍

The Delta Diner/Tap Shack are must stops on our bike adventures up there. Nice work!

Goodtimes! I would love to do this sometime.

Awesome content as always

One of these days Ill figure out color grading...But thanks, Josh, it was a fun one!

oh, I would not worry about it, You could always stay at a BnB in Cable the night before ask them if it's alright to keep your car there.
There’s a public lot in cable that is ok to leave your car overnight. Many people bikepack from cable and do that. I have done that many times.
Thanks again for another great video.
Please let me know what tires you were using .
( the tan gum wall )
Thanks
Mark from Maryland
Nice!
Excellent video, what backpacking is all about. Wouldn’t mind a quick review of bikes, bags,…
That breakfast sausage fried wrap is also available at 24hr Shell station on hwy 101 through Seaside OR LoL
Incredible!
I live in Duluth and have explored the gravel around Cable. Awesome too see this video and get inspired for more exploring. Love the footage!
What CAMBA singletrack did you guys ride?
I really want to do this . Moving from Colorado to Minnesota. I have done enough in Colorado hence , wanted to try North…
Well done! I feel like I was there. And even more like I wanna be!! Limited to a single thumbs up (bummer)
hey! I haven't done any archiving yet but do you have any videos on riding the iti? "north woods" reminded me of the Kuskokwim and Yukon
Was that ti Fargo set up single speed?! Beast mode activate!
Looks like it. I want to see the gear breakdown from everyone!
Hey guys, what tents were you using?
very nice.. but the video felt rushed like the journey was... slow down guys. you never see hikers running around trying to get the vacation finished as quick as possible 🤣 loving the channel... bless up
Did it, thanks, I’ll work on the next video, appreciate the feedback.
What model are those Black/ red FiveTen shoes?
Is Neil riding the Bearclaw thunderhawk?
T R I P ! 🙂👌🏻👊🏻
Awesome video, I subbed, liked and hit the bell. How can I find this exact route in case I ever get a chance to bike it?
The link lives in the video description. Or visit this page: bikepacking.com/bikepacking-routes/
What did you use to lock up your bike when you were in the diner? Always get so paranoid having my bike out of sight to duck in somewhere for food.
we didn't, we just kept them by the window, generally speaking, if someone was to go in, another would be outside a convenience store.
Pretty safe to leave your bike for a short time in the Wisconsin northwoods. I never bring a lock bikepacking in that area. If I’m n a larger town just leave it in front of the window.

Me as a passionate Fishermen wonder is there nobody Riden and fishing?
oh yeah, plenty of fly fishing opportunities and also some lake fishing.

I would be scared to meet the Wisconsin Dogman!
We talked about how there were a few serial killers based out of Wisconsin, but seeing the dogman, would be horrible.
Mayor Dave!
How come in a previous video you mention not to bring tanwall tires bikepacking yet all three of you are running them? lol
Mine were durables, can’t speak to those two, good eye ;)

I just sold 33 acres up there. Now I kinda regret it lol

Newbie here. Need to understand how people are riding this type of terrain with no suspension bikes. Like WHUT? lol
