Stone Temple Pilots filmed a behind-the-scenes documentary as they recorded the LP in their beach villa-turned-recording studio. “It set out to be like a modern-day ‘Let It Be,’” Chapman Baehler, the film’s director, said Thursday (April 5, 2001), referring to Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 Beatles documentary.
The film follows singer Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz through the record-making process, from hammering out songs in preproduction to putting the tunes down on tape. “It’s got a lot of really beautiful, moody shots - these art shots with either Dean or Robert playing an old organ in a really beautiful space, to Dean and Scott playing acoustic, to some totally awesome rock-out live stuff in the main recording space,” Baehler said.
An established rock photographer who has shot STP for years, Baehler was working with the band on a coffee-table book when they approached him about the documentary. The project is Baehler’s first venture into filmmaking; all of the footage was shot by him and his sister, Rebecca Baehler. Both the book and the film should be out later in 2001, he said. STP moved into the Malibu house in January to work on the follow-up to 1999’s platinum No. 4. The band is now mixing the album in Atlanta with longtime producer Brendan O’Brien, Baehler said.
The always ambitious Weiland said late last year that the band planned to make the recording a double album. Shortly after work got underway, Robert DeLeo said that goal looked realistic. “Scott’s in a space right now where we’re not cramming to just get a single record done - he’s in a space where I think a double record is possible.”
There was no more words about the status of the double-album plans, but a source at the band’s label, Atlantic, said the label is hesitant about the idea.

I agree 100% been saying this for years it’s like going to a Rolling Stones concert and they send out an imposter instead of Mick Jagger to sing HIS song’s I distinctly remember watching interviews where Dean himself would say we would send SCOTT a riff a melody and the lyrics that SCOTT would add to It would be incredible The cherry, on top of the Sunday Dean’s on words .don’t get me wrong I love STP as a whole but what these three guys did to SCOTT in a time of need was wrong and I can never forgive them for that (I was also an addict myself and people that truly love me never abandon me and I’ve been clean for over 20 years SCOTT was also diagnosed as bipolar and I know firsthand that it is twice as hard to kick a habit when you are bipolar)it was all about money and greed and they already had plenty of $$$! but they’ll try to tell you that they just wanted to play music that’s a lie anybody who would believe that someone already being a multi millionaire would want to go on tour for nine months out of the year is insane if they were serious and just wanted to play music the playlist at a concert would be nine new STP songs and three old ones but no there’s no new STP songs that are worth playing anyway because the three of them together couldn’t match SCOTTS creativity of lyrics for one second
Oh yeah I almost forgot Scott would go to rehab and as soon as he got out, they Would pressure him to go on tour and anyone who knows about addiction. When you get out of rehab you need to stay away from persons, places and things for at least six months anyway they would push him to go on tour, knowing it would Reignite His addiction That my friend is true greed if you truly cared about that person, you would never do that but they will tell you it wasn’t them. It was the record label when all they had to say is we’re not playing till Scott is better And that’s the end of it. It’s not up for discussion.
