Thank GOD For Growing Up In NYC And The School Trips To Broadway Matinees In The 70s. Pippin, The Wiz, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair. One Of The Reasons I Love All Kinds Of Music.
Oh My Lord... You are so BLESSED! 🙏🏾 I saw Stephanie at a revival at the Beacon on Broadway. She broke her leg while dancing with the crows, kinda the beginning of Thee Wiz. The understudy was crucified by the audience before the first note she sang but had soooo much love after. She owned it on her own. Still hope to catch Stephanie one day. LOVE THE WIZ!! Bring it back when Broadway opens again! I can hope, we need hope these days!
I, too, saw The Wiz in '75 at the Majestic Theater with the amazing Stephanie Mills, Dee Bridgewater, Hinton Battle, Andre DeShields and Ted Ross. It was my 1st Broadway show; and it made me a fall in love with live theater and NYC.
YES! YES! you hear it too -- and they are, in my opinion, the two greatest female jazz voices in my lifetime. I am so privileged to have seen them both in concert, my two favorites.
I saw her just again a few years ago in a jazz nightclub in Indianapolis. Her entire evening was truly wonderful. She has had a long career, but still continues to please her public so very well. Keep at it, Dee Dee!
I'm looking for the Sarah Vaughan version of this song. I know they sound alike, but I could have sworn that Sarah Vaughan sang this song. I love this song, would listen to it at my college library with those big headphones on over and over again back in the day.
I saw the original on Broadway also still have the Vinyl. The town I live in is going to do a reproduction and u trued out for it and tried out for Glenda & got the part. Closest to Broadway I'll get but never give up! This and the Original Dreamgirls, my favorite Broadway musicals.
performed this when i was about 17 (obviously the wizz overture rather than this rendetion slightly different lyrics same melody ) and gave me the biggest rush and the biggest standing ovation of the play a memory that will stay with me forever
If you believe Within your heart you'll know That no one can change The path that you must go Believe what you feel And know you're right because The time will come around When you say it's yours Believe that you can go home Believe you can float on air Then click your heels three times If you believe Then you'll be there Believe in yourself Right from the start Believe in the magic That's inside your heart Believe all these things Not because I told you to But believe in yourself If you believe in yourself Just believe in yourself As I believe in you
Love this song from The Wiz. Believe Bridgewater was channeling Sarah Vaughn in this performance. But I believe it was Lena Horne who performed it the best in the movie version. However I still wonder if The Devine One ever performed the song, and if not why.

You can tell she was a smoker back then. I love Lena Horne's version the best! The passion, the power in her voice was simply amazing! This was just ok imo

This song is so true. Always Believe in your SELF. Love this song.
I saw this on Broadway in 1975, I was 16; I have never seen anything like it again!
Me, too! It was amazing. I wish Broadway would bring it back.
Right?
I was 6 years old, sitting front row center. My life forever changed for the better.
That's neat. I feel the same way.

Her voice reminds me of Sarah Vaughan. Very similar singing style.
+david kelly I was going to say the same thing.
Exactly my thoughts!

If you believe
Within your heart you'll know
That no one can change
The path that you must go
Believe what you feel
And know you're right because
The time will come around
When you say it's yours
Believe that you can go home
Believe you can float on air
Then click your heels three times
If you believe
Then you'll be there
Believe in yourself
Right from the start
Believe in the magic
That's inside your heart
Believe all these things
Not because I told you to
But believe in yourself
If you believe in yourself
Just believe in yourself
As I believe in you

Glinda:
Geloof in jezelf
Vanaf het begin
Magie zat bij jou
Toch allang binnen in
Vertrouw al dit moois
Niet omdat ik het je zeg
Maar geloof in jezelf
Kind, geloof in jezelf
Geloof nou maar in jezelf
Zoals ik geloof in jou
