My job was to wake him just before Lena came on screen. This song still gives me chills because I remember my dad mesmerized watching Lena sing it in this scene.
It’s astonishing. I heard Deborah Cox’s version live in The Wiz over a months ago in New York. It’s also in the CD coming out soon. I mean absolutely no disrespect to Deborah but it’s a little bit disappointing. Lena Horne’s version is just amazing. I haven’t heard another artist doing it like she does.

Not just a song...but a message to black people..especially black youth. Something we should tell our children everyday instead of talking about slavery...and very real obstacles. Sean Connery to Ellliot Ness: "Everyone knows where the liquor is...but what are you prepared to do now?"

But the movie does have its legends of fans...but not enough fans to make the movie a hit.

HISTORY FACT: When Lena Horne began to come on the scene, those who were helping her career insisted that she claim to be Spanish so that way people would book her more and invest in her. But she insisted that she not do that and that she promote herself the way she is-a black woman. THANK YOU MS.HORNE
The discussion here got toxic rather quickly. The concept of European Spanish goes over the heads of many Americans. And so for that matter does mixing. In fact, knowing nothing about Lena Horne's family, only her as mainstream singer and actress, her presence in this film threw me off at first, but not for more than an instance. I for one don't give a damn what she is, nor anyone else. Just do your job and fill the roll, and they all did that tremendously in this film.
Makes me cry every time. This should be an anthem for young Black girls (and boys). Know who you are and believe in it. Always. Because this world will never stop trying to make you disbelieve.
I always used to feel like she was singing to me when I was a little kid and I watched this she sung it with so much conviction it has always brought me to tears and still does to this day
It's not adorable. When singers are bad actresses, but they sing well, it's okay. In this film, unfortunately, they don't play well and sing well. The film did not become a failure thanks to the efforts of Quincy, Michael, some male singers and (most importantly) ballet dancers. You don't have to watch or listen to everything else.
This song always makes me want to cry. She sung with so much conviction. As a child this song help me to believe in myself and it still pumps me up as an adult!
Me too! I could never sing it because my voice always starts cracking with the emotion i feel inside. She does such a powerful performance of this song!
Given that I felt uplifted by this film's message as a child, I can scarcely imagine what it must have meant to black children who have to deal with our society's sickening onslaught of negative and exclusionary messages. Brings a tear to my eye.
I wish more people knew the story of this AMAZING woman. Her mother wanted a career in show business and was, sadly, always jealous of Ms. Horne's success. During WWII, this stunningly beautiful lady was the pin-up for black service members, hence Fred Sanford's ongoing admiration of her in the show Sanford and Son. Ms. Horne was also one of the first big stars to appear on "Sesame Street," making it 'cool' for others to follow in her footsteps; this is the reason she was an early guest on "The Muppet Show," encouraging other great guest stars to follow. I remember seeing The Wiz in the theater in its first release. Honestly, the overall quality of the film is a bit uneven BUT when Ms. Horne finished this song, everyone in the room gave her performance a standing ovation. Fantastic moment. I wish more of today's so-called 'divas' had half her brains, beauty, style, and class.

Ms Lena Horne should've gotten a Academy Award for this performance alone!...R.I.P Ms .Horne
This is my favorite part of that movie. You literally can’t help but feel your soul smiling as Lena sings this. ❤️ You convinces me to BELIEVE in myself Ms Horne!
1:49 - Baby lookin like, "You betta SANG girl"

When your an adult and watch this those words means so much more then when your a child 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽❤️❤️❤️
The Legendary Lena Horne!! Enough said
This is the only time a song could make me tear up in two minutes
I wish she would’ve floated out with an encore. I love the babies elevated in the sky with her…❤️❤️💯
When I saw this a billion years ago in the theater. Kids started to laugh because, I guess, the way she was floating, by the end everyone had shut up enthralled and clapped and whistled.
those babies are cute
Give me chills every time i hear her sing this song..Beautiful
