    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dorothy (Diana Ross) sings "Home" as she reminisces about all the characters she's met on her journey.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

+OrangeXenon54 - It's been said, that while recording this scene....the director challenged her to just let it fly. This particular moment, is after the director had basically said to her...."Diana, you're not giving your all on this scene, maybe you need to go take a rest?" She got fired up after him having said that....

I like the part when she sings "maybe I convince time to slow up, giving me enough time in my life to grow up. Time, please be my friend, let me start again." I feel that part because I never really grew up. I feel like a little girl that never passed 12 years old.

Wow, this movie is more than a musical. There is a lot of messages that we can learn from this movie. (as black folk). Oz never existed, but only in Dorothy's world. That was Dorothy in each of those characters and that's the way she only could express herself. In real life she was a timid and shy girl. The Tin Man; she had subdued feelings of losing her parents and all of her inside emotions; Scarecrow; when her auntie suggested she should go to a different level than teaching the kindergarten class, she new she was smart but she was fearful from moving to the next level, and Lion; even though she had some sense of pride, she didn't let nobody come close enough to see her vulnerability, and that all she was holding on to. It took a strange occurrence to go within herself to realize her power that it was always in her. Even the great Richard Prior as the Wiz, he was not the answer, because it was in her all along, she had the answers. But let me stop preachin to ya'll!

Trivia: Diana Ross actually sang this song live on camera instead of miming to vocals that would be recorded later on. This allowed her to really let loose with her vocals. Lena Horne, who played Glinda, was allowed the same perk with her rendition of "Believe In Yourself".

Yes. That's why it's just one shot right on her face. Diana was notoriously not a great lip syncher. She couldn't fake this performance. (Lena's song has just a couple of cuts. Don't know if it's because they did a few takes and used the best parts, or if the cut aways to the babies was to reinforce the message that she's telling the young people that they need to believe in themselves.)

More trivia: it was reported at the time that when Ms Ross saw the rush releases of Ms Horne's stunning performance, she went back and redid hers. Lol. When asked about this incident in an Ebony magazine interview, Lena Horne evaded the question. It's probably a true story, knowing the insecurities of the Wicked Witch of Motown.

She is a Supreme singer. All singers in the 1950s and 1960s had to be able sing to get into Motown. Not like 1980s and 1990 singers. Thank you, Diana, for paving the way. Great arrangements, great songs, but please listen to the voice. It's talking through the songs and light and whispy. It just is🤷🏾‍♂️
Of all the Supreams she was viewed as most attractive and commercial. Heck, she dated Barry Gordy didn't she? They have a child. She positioned herself to get some great music and opportunity. That's ok. Not hating her. I am just evaluating singing and saying listen to Gladys Knight. Aretha Franklin, even Pattie LaBell. There are others but the voices are stronger and the range is broader.
Even in this performance that began this discussion, just look at the struggle to hold the notes and the lack of breath. Look at the strain in the throat? At one point she even gives up a note and shakes it off saying "Uhh!" It looked painful. Also she had to start screaming out some of the words which gave great effect and effort BUT the greatest don't have to scream. I know he is a man but I don't imagine Luther Vandros screaming...
She did exceedingly well with the things she had but just NOT a singer to bring you to tears with her voice quality. Now with her performance? Maybe 🤔 But that is what I am saying in a nutshell...Great performer that also sings a little but not a great voice of our times🙂 Come at me. I'm ready 🤺😉

Lady Sings The Blues? Yeh, you can't top it as a classic. Her, Richard Pryor, Billy D! It gets no better and she did a superb job acting in that. She could cut a rug up pretty good too. I see you saying she is top shelf. She is. I just don't think it's on the singing voice alone but taking her in as a whole she embodied "Triple Threat!" Have a Happy New Year's.. +terelon Unless you saw Stephanie Mills sing the song on Broadway 40 years ago, it's unfair to compare the "emotion" when one song is a movie performance and the other is a music video. Diana is playing a role in the movie. Stephanie performed in the Broadway play when she was 16 or 17. I saw it in 1975, and it drew a standing ovation.

***** I've seen enough clips to form my opinion which I know I'm entitled to, I love Stephanie Mills and think she's a wonderful singer and own a good bit of her music but I'm standing by my opinion sorry, I loved her acting and her rendition of 'The Feeling We Once Had' on the recent live re-staging of this, she was a standout to me.

Diana Ross just puts so much heart and emotion into this song. The song is already beautiful, but she just digs deep into the soul of the melody. Listen to the part where she sings "Giving me enough time to grow up." There is just so much sincerity in her voice. Then of course the part where she sings "Like yours, like mine, like home!" Man, what a powerhouse performance!

Well all i can say is blackbarbiedoll as you i gave it all lowercase letters, they know not of what they speak, and I'm sure if that was I'm sure Quincy Jones would have made her do it over, as was he totally stretched Diana vocals giving her a new and emotional voice to sing with, and not robotic perfection. And that is why she and her career have blueprint for most female singers who then actresses and fashion designers. This is a person who never studied acting took on the part of Billie Holiday even though she doesn't look sound like yet gets nominated for an Oscar she doesn't win that year it Liza Minelli but even Liza who saw Diana as Billie Holiday while being interviewed said that DR deserved this more than me. I can never understand how people can sit faceless behind a computer critic something truly great. And this is performer who never got into this for the money she just wanted to have record on radio, but if you have been DR concert you see how much she loves perform and how strong and perfect vocals are live. This is a singer from 60 's when they had to use there own ears to hear themselves sing therefore they are much better singers than singers today. I saw her in central park on the rain day, probably greatest performance i've ever witnessed live. This is a woman who when it started raining pouring rain did not run and even with all the lightening she stood on that stage ushering out to make sure no one got hurt. And she will go down in history as one of the greatest performers not dancers or even singers but performers of all time and no can ever take that from EVER.

My daughter is going through depression because she is afraid to live. I mentioned to her why I loved this movie and how this queen and Lena Horne's songs touched me so deeply. 💕

She doesn't sound good here. She sounds terrible, actually. I love her voice, not here though.
