Styx - A.D. 1928, Rockin' The Paradise 1996

Tommy Shaw - Guitar, Vocals
Dennis DeYoung - Keyboards
James Young - Guitar
Chuck Panozzo - Bass
"Return to the Paradise" tour 1996
Dennis DeYoung is the VOICE of STYX.
Amen. Today’s “Styx” is just a cover band. 😢
@@crzycatlady62 I agree it was hijacked by Shaw And James
....was!!
That's EXACTLY how rock music should be played.
Styx for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame !!
The RRHOF is a joke. RR is missing in regard to many inductees.
But yes, Styx should be considered.
Yes i agree
No Dennis DeYoung no show!
Unfortunately, at the time, Styx was considered a shrewdly calculated, commercial "rip off" of Journey, just as, ironically, Foreigner would be accused of aping Styx. The Hollywood food chain is voracious. Critics never forgave Styx because they couldn't stand Journey and snubbed Neal Shon's band all the way to Neal's going to the bank and to HIS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPEECH A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. We true Journey, Styx, and Foreigner fans have never forgotten their veritable pop music genius nor their brilliant Music Hall performances made accessible to arenas, stadiums and, in some cases, entire city blocks.
Anyone that saw this tour in 1996 will tell you it was one of the greatest concerts they ever saw.
I was astonished to hear this, never hearing them live, and having grown up on the album. For a long time at the beginning the sound was so spot on, I was like, "Are they just playing a backing tape? Is he just lip syncing?" But we can see later that it's actually just a perfect performance, and that happens sometimes.
I did!
Saw the show in Cincinnati it was fantastic! Definitely one of the best I have seen.
True! I was at the show in Madison, WI the night before this.
I believe it. They are on fire here
I went to the MGM Grand Las Vegas NV Show I was the first one at the entry gate and was lucky enough to meet Dennis DE Young as he was leaving sound check and paid my condolences to John Pinazzo yet this was just a few weeks after he passed away but Dennis was very kind I shook his hand he asked if I was from Illinois and I told him born in Alton lived in Decatur IL we ended up chatting about our home towns and told Jim this was my first Styx show he told me that sail away was dedicated to me then we went our separate ways him to dinner me to my seat the best part was meeting Dennis before the show
I got to meet him and talk after he and Styx had split when he was doing a show in NYC, yes he really is a nice guy and I will always remember that experience
Dennis connecting with audience. Tommy and JY connecting with themselves.
An absolutely phenomenal vocalist!
I've seen Styx many times, this tour we'll go down in my memory as the best sounding concert I ever heard number one, number two the best I ever saw Styx perform! It was spectacular 😍 I'm sorry if you weren't there because you don't know what you missed and you never will.
These were the days .... back when our country had a soul.
I feel like Styx was lost without Dennis and never recovered. Some of them didn't like his broadway-like shows, and now they're trying to do the same thing without him, and it just doesn't work--at least in my view.
Tommy and JY wanted to be 20-something guitar strumming rock idols forever. Refused to grow up. resisted to change to pop success that Journey, Genesis, Foriegner, REO Speedwagon and other 70s bands had to adapt to stay relevant.
This was a brilliant line up for the band, the only one I really know, been following them since 1981 from Australia. I love the work Tommy is doing with young teenage orchestra a couple of years ago.
Can´t find this good anymore !!! Today´s music is so boring has no soul !!!
One of the all time great classic rock bands! Great musicians, great singers, great songs, and no filthy lyrics. Been listening to them since the mid 70"s! Thank you for all the music!
Saw this tour. Amazing. Everytime they started another song. I screamed That's my favorite song. All energy and talent. So fantastic. Thank you. Styx.
Styx were never the same after Dennis was sacked or whatever happened to the band
Amen and agreed
This proves that STYX is not STYX without Dennis DeYoung.
Agreed 100%
goodness. man i can c why styx was so good in the 70s 80s 90. dennis u r the man.
77 crater celebration, 78 okc
Watching in 2020. When our city, state and country reopens I want to rock like this song. With Dennis DeYoung on vocals and keys. This is Styx!!!
Why Would You Wait??
Need the lead guy back. He wrote most of the tunes and the voice can't be replaced
DeYoung's voice is amazing !!!!
True, but his want for theatrics brought this and Kilroy was Here to the stage and killed the live shows. They STUNK UP THE STAGE at Texas Monster
I was eight months pregnant with my son and sitting waaaayyy up in the grass at Rosemont during this concert. My son now plays guitar and loves all kinds of music. He had some good role models even before he was born! Thanks for posting!
That can't be. Rosemont was an indoor venue. I think you're thinking of Poplar Creek perhaps ?
@@nsc324 It was Tinley Park. 🤦🏼
This was filmed at the Rosemont Horizon, no grass there other than what you smoked.
The energy in this is contagious!!
It really is! I recently went to my first styx concerts and felt the most energy I ever did during a concert- even for other first time concerts from other bands
I've only seen them live once, back in 2005 and they were AMAZING!! I live in the UK and they rarely tour here which is sad because they have always been my favourite band and I'd grab the chance with both hands to see them again!! The energy from their performance is incredible😊
This live performance is just... AMAZING!
STYX for ever.❤
Dennis DeYoung is a very talented man!
Perfect song to start a show. Magnificent voice!
Everyone was in agreement that this was probably their best tour ever.
Best Styx tour ever
Nope. DeYoung and his theatrics were killing the band.
When Styx ruled the world.
Dietpepsivanilla , now they rule Mars, with The Mission.
I GOT FAITH IN OUR GENERATION.
STICK TOGETHER.
KNOWING THAT WE CAN'T LOSE.
ROCKIN THE PARADISE TONIGHT.
I was there in '96 @ the e-center, Camden N.J. And yes, it was the finest concert I ever witnessed, and I been to a ton of concerts in my life, this was an awesome show!!
All I want is one more tour with Dennis DeYoung!! C’mon, Tommy. Let shit go.
I heard it was mostly because he was ill, and not just because of differences. It would be pretty cool to see Dennis back though!
Grow up guys and let it go before one of you die
Styx, Rosemont Horizon Center, May, 1981. I will *never* forget.
This truly STYX!!!! Anyone who thinks the current lineup is just fine NEVER saw them with DDY....miss him dearly and i will not ever bother to see the new lineup, even if they came to my house!
My God they were tight. Rock on boys....
Classic Styx was at their peak on this tour if you ask me.
Happy 72nd birthday James "J.Y." Vincent Young November 14, 1949 Chicago. Styx wouldn't be Styx without you. Thanks for the memories. Many more James Vincent..
True, They would still have Dennis
Saw them in 1976 with BTO at the Madhouse on Madison, that was a great show! The last tour with the original band. Equinox is still one of my favorite albums.
Dennis Amazing!
Man I haven’t heard this song since I was a kid maybe 9 years old in 1980. It’s like I knew all the words from mtv and I haven’t heard this song for 45 years
They gotta get Dennis De Young back and do a tour ! Would be awesome!!
Saw this concert tour in Nashville, TN. I just really prefer this STYX lineup.
I was there! At Starwood Amphitheater, I believe it was July 1996.
Me too man. Would like to c that happen.
I would love to see a reunion tour with Styx +DDY.......and a Journey Tour with Steve Perry!
Cha-Ching ! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
And Glen Burtnik
Good Morning ,
It’s February 18 , 2023 ,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Dennis DeYoung ,
Rockin’ the Paradise theater
How do you not like this performance ????? This is epic.
DeYoung's antics. That's how you don't like this performance.
Yes awesome band got go see them on this tour, pieces of eight and grand illusion. So many amazing bands.
Fantastic, from a 71 yr. old man.
Great song, album + band. So much fun live! Rockers still 🤘
the drummer is a BEAST !!!!! the bassist also does an excelllent job keeping the tempo. Amazing..
This song rocks
I had this concert on DVD and it’s still one of my favorites. I didn’t even know about Todd Sucherman back then either.
unreal .. what a group...ffs sake who can beat that .. thats pure magic ... can u imagine the rehearsing... brilliant guitarist
ROCKING THE PARADISE...EVERYBODY, LET'S ROCK!
So Fukin Good!!!
This had to be one of the best concerts I've seen.
I saw them in June of 1981 and again in 1996, right after John Panozzo passed. Great live band. Forget about some of the Pop and Concept albums. These guys could play
ooh ooh I have this concert
Just, I love them..!
I met Lawrence Gowan after a performance one time. Great keyboardist. I also saw Dennis DeYoung on his own with his band and I was blown away by his talent. Whether he and the boys could survive on stage is another matter.
Gowan is talented, but painful to watch lately with the turning keyboards and such. Too much a clown on stage.
Styx the band losttbe greaest drummer in july of 1996 john panozzo
Todd is killing it on the drums great replacement for John.
John would want this guy to replace him. he is just that great.
Right? Like, I always loved the drums on this album and they're played accurately here, and I was like, why is there not more video of the drummer?
@@belovedconsole At this time I don't thin Todd Sucherman was a full fledged official member. He was just kind of a replacement until they made him the official drummer later.
todd looks so young, i didnt know it was him and i never knew he was a sonor guy
@@bobhowells9603 Todd Sucherman was a Sonor guy back in ‘96.
He’s playing Pearl Masterworks drums with Styx now.
This song is the best song Queen never wrote! Seriously this song has major Queen vibes to it! Love it!
Or Queen has major Styx vibes…🤔
i seen this tour back in '96 and still have the tour shirt.i had went to a drum clinic to see eric singer(kiss) in mobile al. and he asked me about the show and i said it was GREAT!...
So much energy, soooo good!
Just a great song entertainment at its best
epic.
I heard Gary Ritchrath eats frets for breakfast! I believe it! Rock on!
I would love to see the entire show.
Its posted here somewhere. Just search "Styx Return to Paradise"
Saw the paradise theater tour they were great
amazing
I remember when paradise theater album game out I was almost 13
Still have my t-shirt from this concert
Just like yesterday
Awesome
"Right in the DARKEST SKIES..."
seen the 1st show a couple days after john died.20yrs this july.they played almost 3hrs and it was great.
+po dunc Great man. So was the other john. Rest In Peace John Curulewski and John Panozzo
A shit load of talent on this stage all at one time! What it would have been like to have attended one of the concerts on this tour!!
Dennis uses his Broadway experience in 1993 to good use.
Saw it several time
The best concert I’ve ever seen……ever!
I’d love to see these guys together just one more time
But that’s never going to happen
🥲
Ive been born too late🤦♀️
Tommy has said recently he sees what happened to Styx differently and he would be willing to play with Dennis again. JY says never in a million years.
I was at opening night at MGM Grand Las Vegas 5 row….fantastic…
Sorry folks, but THIS is Styx, not the group currently touring. Not even CLOSE to being the same. Sure they have a DDY sound-alike, but that's about it.
+paulb1988 I have to agree.
1) there 1976-1981 styx
2) there is 1997 styx
3) there is styx 1999 to present.
id rather take 2), then 3), then 1
first time i have heard them, was in 1999 and it was this DVD in 97, so anything older than that for me would just be a waste of time,
Styx is finally styx 1996 and beyond
you also forgetting the fact that they have an incredible drummer by the name of Todd Sucherman... fuciking great drummer man...
paulb1988 yes, Dennis de Young was Styx. It would be like taking ocasek or Benjamin Orr from the cars. I don't know why they are waiting so long to get Styx back together.
Totally agree. The original band is the best ever STYX to perform. Seen this tour in Milwaukee. Awesome show
I think this was the tour that I saw them on, for the second time. The first was the Mr. Roboto tour.
A friend asked me and had great tickets.
Sooooo goood.
HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? THE WORLD'S GONE CRAZY...AND WE...ARE LAZY..
You are correct sir!
It’s so weird to not see cell phones.
...and sooo refreshing.
Oh, man, this is fantastic. They are all so talented, but what the hell are they doing without Dennis DeYoung? I had to grow up a lot to really appreciate him, but DDY is the real thing in an industry full of AutoTuned wannabe-singers who can't entertain a full stadium. Tommy and JY write and sing great songs too, but Dennis had the artistic vision, the instantly-recognizable voice, and the charisma to pull off his non-conformist "square" persona. He was what made them different from the other supergroups of the 70s. Sure, he had bad ideas as well as good -- but that's just what happens when you have a lot of ideas! I guess as long as the three singer/songwriters are alive, there's always a chance for a classic Styx reunion, but I don't think that's gonna happen.
I think in the end, his ego was what got him kicked out of the band. He didn't want to implement other people's ideas in fear that it would hinder his vision for the band, so Shaw and J Young wanted him out.
I honestly love Gowan with Styx and also Dennis's solo band is amazing. Specifically those guitarists are having at least a 10th of the fun the drummer of Iron Maiden has (so infinitely more than I could ever have in a lifetime collectively)
I think you are absolutely right! They were and are my favorites! I saw them several times, even had a couple of personal incidents! Love DDY and TS, need JY to finish the sound. I hate that they are not together! My son's favorite band too!
@@heythereitsRBK2 Well, Dennis explained in an interview that he got a nerve damaged as complication to a disorder, causing sensitivity of light. Shaw needed the money income and wanted to tour for the release of their 1999 album, but when he found Dennis couldn't tour due to this light sensitivity they removed him instead of waiting for him to heal up.
Dennis has a *fantastic* voice, but he just seemed more suited for Broadway. Sorry. I never thought he fit in a rock band.
Styx forever
In the darkest skies HERE AT THE PARADISE
Saw them with Reo Speedway and Loverboy and they were smokin hot at the PNC arts center here in New Jersey
This is and will always be fuckin great
Good times.
And I'll take any risk to tie back the hands of time...
The song is very queen
Styx were around almost as long as Queen. Its better than a lot of their big hits
Can we talk about Todd Sucherman crushing that kit?
Greta Van Fleet and other trendy up and coming bands will never match the sheer intensity and raw talent of a DDY-led Styx show...
The only thing that would have made this better would have been having the piano/keyboard parts that the original recording had.
Some bands thrive on tension...Beatles Stones and these guys...Deyoung theater vs Shaws professionalism meets guitar star is what bands need.
Agreed. It was that tension that made some great music in the 70s and 80s. But like all the other bands that have that tension, eventually it's hard to sustain when you have competing visions for the band.
god of America!
FYI Drummer is Todd Sucherman. Since that is missing :), Been with them since March 95.
Love Panazzo the bass player
❤️ 💙
Chuck panozzo looks like he's playing a bar mitzvah
I saw Styx bad company and billy squier on the same ticket back in Boston MA in 99 2000. When bad company finished he alf the tent emptied,I looked at my friends and said let's see how close we can get to see Styx. It turned out we were about 13-15 rows from the stage! We had mezzanine tickets and we acted as if we belong there!
