Very nice selection, Dave. I was really surprised by the Kalvin Klein watch - a fashion brand making a pretty decent watch. Cool.

I was meandering through my local Wal-Mart and spied a generic in-house brand (George? maybe) minimalist watch. High-polished stainless case, quartz movement, plain black face, 38mm diameter, chrome hands and hour markers. It was mounted on a terrible brown "leather" band, with 22mm lugs. Price? $9.99. I bought two. I mounted one on a red/white/blue NATO strap and the other on a black alligator band. Now I don't even need to bother swapping the band to go from casual to formal, and they've both kept perfect time. The unbranded face keeps the watch snobs guessing and gives the impression of something exclusive. Winning!

    Nice selection there, Dave.
My first thoughts on the one watch collection would be Sieko SNKL83 or SNKL23.
Wear it on a leather strap at the office and a bracelet as a casual wearer and a Nato for the beater.
I mean, it's black dail and a little shiny case you can't miss.

One of my favorite "minimalist" watches is the Timex Metropolitan 40. I prefer minimalist watches without a second hand, only hour and minute (and no date).
As for a one-watch collection, perhaps the Casio MDV106-1A diver. Not a huge diver fan, but it looks great in any environment, is very well made and reliable, and a heck of a good price. It's hard to imagine it won't make the list as it's so widely loved.

One of the best inexpensive watches you can buy:
    Casio Edifice EFV-100D-7AVCR
White Dial with Black Accents. Stainless Steel. Excellent Casio Quartz Movement. Date Complication. The bracelet has solid links, hollow endlinks, but is remarkable for the price.
The down side is the Chinese origin of the watch. Right now, some may not be up on this idea.
That said, for the money, it is incredible value. Usually around $60-$75 USD.

"Right now, some may not be up on this idea."
Why? At this point the US, Italy and Spain have more infected people than China (total numbers) and Switzerland has certainly more infected people per capita. Also, funfact, no virus survives very long on metal surfaces to begin with. That would be a straight up insane argument against that watch.

I have two CK ETA movement watches and love them. They wear amazingly well, great size and great case finish. It does have the low end of the ETA 2824-2 movement, meaning it was not regulated better than +20 sec. 'Pound for pound' can't do better.

I think the Cadisen c1032 is the perfect everyday watch, pair it with a $10 leather nato from Eache for casual wear and dress it up with a $10 suede strap from Eache. The watch has a 5bar rating so you can take it for a swim, sapphire crystal so you don't have to worry about scratches, the case is all polished so it's easy to polish with a bit of Cape cod and it has a seiko nh36 movement, wich is simply amazing. Get a $10 Casio F-91W for your dirty jobs.

1 watch collection? I'd suggest the Pagani Design Submariner for around $65, it has NH35a movement, sapphire crystal, 100m WR, 90-click bezel, display caseback and a fairly decent bracelet.

    • @karlsenula9495
      @karlsenula9495 3 роки тому

I've got three Pagani's love and wear them all, could have gotten a fourth, and will be picking up a fourth.
The three I have: 2720k mecha-quartz chrono, Rolex Daytona homage - also mecha-quartz, and the 43mm Hulk submariner homage (at the time they did not make a 40mm version and still don't make a 40mm Hulk). The one I passed on was the Pagani GMT, but I picked up the Parnis GMT because I had not had a Parnis before, liked the jubilee bracelet better and the solid black with orange GMT hand instead of a two tone bezel. The one I will get this fall or winter will be the Datejust.

A number of years ago I bought a Braun sports watch. The style was so simple and understated it looked so good. The direct comparison with most of my cycling buddies was of course the Casio G Shock which for looks & style just could not compare to the Braun, everybody just loved its simplicity. Alas! After that the comparison ends. The G Shocks for all their complicated dials were rugged reliable and durable. The Braun on the other hand eat batteries; you’d be lucky to get 6 months out of it. Somewhere between a year and eighteen months the minute hand gave up the ghost and flopped down to the 6 o’clock position and that was that. It was a terrible pity for such a cool looking watch and coming from such a reliable brand as Braun. The old saying that all that glitters is not gold applies here in spades, such a pity.

Thanks for this! I've been going down the watch-rabbit hole and came across a lot of MVMT bashing. I guess I can see why from a watch geek point of view, but I just keep coming back to MVMT because that's the watch I like the look of. I don't care about the movement and other stuff, don't even care it won't last for 50 years. Just want a watch that tells the time, looks good. So thanks for putting the light on brands like MVMT being a decent pick for people like me. I'll look into these watches too.

I recently stepped across a Seiko Solar SUP855P1, a very beautiful minimalistic watch, no seconds hand, Roman numerals, black dial with a little sunburst in it, a very slim profile, hardlex crystal, and a black reflective case... At a little less than 120 USD.
Unfortunately mine arrived damaged so I had to return it, but will definitely look forward to acquire one.

  • @lloydlanzar5491

A good affordable one watch collection option would be the Seiko SNKL41. The white dial is very easy to pair with a wide variety of straps and outfits. Add a good bracelet, different colours of leather strap, a good perlon strap or even some nato straps. Its 38mm diameter is a sweet spot for most wrist sizes and the 18mm lugs make it easier to find straps and bracelets. The 7S26 movement may be an entry level movement but it has been a reliable one for many years. The hardlex crystal is definitely not on the level of sapphire, but I have yet to scratch mine despite the almost daily use and abuse. It is also water resistant to 50 meters. A good watch to consider. Thank you.

Hi Dave. A bit late for this video, but maybe you’ll do another at some point, so I thought I’d throw a watch in the ring that nobody has put in the comments. I’ve heard negative comments about the build quality of the Braun (see Ben’s Watch Club channel amongst others), so my alternative is the Bering Max Renè, model 15540. Really nice 2 hand minimalist watch that should be more reliable than the Braun. I just picked up one today with the white dial and yellow strap and interested to see how I get on with it.

That Calvin Klein watch is pretty amazing. I came close to buying one but the size stopped me. It made me want to research affordable Swiss watches, though, which led to me eventually buying a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto, a Tissot Le Locle, a Glycine Airman, and a Glycine Combat Sub. Whoops...
A one watch collection... a polarizing choice, but the Invicta Pro Diver fits the bill. It's a functional 200m automatic dive watch that's shiny enough to wear to work. I got one for $46 on Prime Day but they're probably around $80 now.

In the bronze one-watch category, I nominate the Timex Expedition Metal Field quartz, 40mm diameter, just 9mm case height. I have the gray dial, but you can also pick green or cream. $55 retail, with indiglo, 50M WR, date 20mm lug width. Field watch, but clean enough design to be versatile. For the silver category, I nominate the Casio WaveCeptor WVA-M630D, gold dial, solar quartz, Multi-Band 6 radio updates, 42mm diameter (wears smaller), 11mm high, easily adjustable metal bracelet. Analog hands, digital display with multiple functions. Retails above $120, but available new under $100. Clean design, tremendous value as every-day watch.

Fantastic videos and recommendations. Love your watch channel and all of your great reviews and information. Here's where I stand, and why your channel is so practical and useful:
I do not get my jollies by possessing expensive stuff when I can get quality "generic" or non-big name items at much lower and reasonable costs. That includes watches. For example, if someone were to, say, offer me the choice of an authentic, new $10,000 Rolex or other high end watch for $5000, OR a free $400 watch I like, but with the condition that I could not flip or sell the $10,000 watch; I would take the $400 watch and cheer. That's what meets my cost to benefit ratio.

Hi Dave. I had to think long and hard about a ‘One Watch Collection’. In fact I didn’t think I was going to be able to come up with a contender.
Then I looked at the Invicta Speedway Pro 9223 on my wrist today and thought “That’s it”!
A Daytona-esque (some would say homage and they are possibly correct) design but it has a great gloss waffle dial with a small wave effect near the rotor pin, which is more subtle than it sounds and really plays with the light beautifully. A chronograph with the perfect Daytona dimensions, 3 sub-dials surrounded by stainless steel, beautifully applied stainless steel baton indices with lume, perfectly proportioned lume’d baton hands and crisp white printed minute / second markers around the dial all surrounded by a polished Stainless Steel bezel with tachemetrè on a brushed & polished case.
It comes on a good but not great bracelet, has triple screw down crown & pushers and sports 200m WR! All for $70!
I wear mine on very nice but not very pricey vintage style leather strap.
This watch can be worn with shorts and a T, or to a black tie event and look equally at home.
    www.jomashop.com/invicta-9223.html.
Check it out and see if you are as bewitched as I am!
It did take me a couple of months to REALLY appreciate this piece.
Thanks and I hope you and your loved ones are staying healthy and sane. ✌🏼️

I'm back again! I haven't read through the comments so this won't be the 1st nor the last (l suspect) comment about a Rolex explorer homage in particular the Explorer 1016. Since I'm currently saving for the Smiths 1016 homage the 'OG' has been on my mind of late.
It is - in my opinion the greatest 'One Watch Collection' of all time.
And I want to be really clear here!: not a Rolex Explorer - The 1016 Rolex Explorer.
But again, won't be the 1st or last!
Just out of interest, have you seen the Smiths Explorer 1016 homage? It's not cheap for an homage watch with a Miyota 9 series mvmt., but it has pedigree (Hillary was wearing a 1016 on one wrist and a Smiths watch on the other when he summited Everest. It has an incredible bracelet and a significantly domed sapphire crystal...and my name on the dial!!
£330? That's around $700AUD by the time it gets to me. It will be the most I've ever spent on a watch.
I have some sentimental reasons to buy this piece. My dad wore a 1016, it is with my older brother and this, as I said has Smiths on the dial. I've always ridden British motorcycles, who used Smiths gauges so I feel a connection to the brand.
It'll be a long 6 months until I can buy it...
      Sorry for the l o n g post. I'm bored!
With love and health to you and yours and all who may one day read my drivel...
      Anthony Smith.

The Truth - This is a moot point for me because I already have 3 "dress" watches and they get very limited wrist time, I'm not really a dress watch guy and I rarely need to don a suit for an event.
But the best dress watches are vintage watches (or vintage style) IMO.
So if you are running 20 secs out a day but only using it as a dress watch, no problem.
But yeah, a full 2 minutes per week? Not good for an everyday wearer.

Great review! Was surprised you didn’t list Citizen #NH8350 40 mm automatic (Miyota 21 jewel). A stunning minimalist dress watch in various face colors, textures, etc. Currently at $109 on Amazon. Note: hand-winding but no hacking. Can be back-hacked.

the CK i think is a great deal, the watch looks great swiss movement swiss made, i dont cara about the name on the dial, anyways two of my favorite cologne, the only thing is that is made for big wrist, i got 7.5 wrist so still look good for a dress watch, almost forgot, it's sapphire but no AR

Many years ago I bought a Calvin Klein watch from a well known jewellery store.
Eight months later the battery died so I brought it back to the same jeweller, after the guy replaced the battery he told me that inside the watch was filthy and it needed a service.
To this day I don't know if he was trying to con me or not.never got it serviced and it's been in the back of a drawer ever since

One watch collection is a watch that offer comfortable to wear everyday, suits every occasion such as office or labour works, cassual or formal, in door or out door, good looking, but solid build, it must be accurate time keeper, but maintenance free and everyone can afford to have.. ..... The answers is Citizen eco drive aw1430-86a. New trend looks with 43mm, large numeral display dial for easy to read the time with any angle of the watches, 100m water resistant, accurate as +/-5sec per month or +/- 1minutes a year. And only for a little as $150.

Talking about plated brass - I'm planning to take one of those watches apart, take out crown, movement, dial and straps and put the case into hydrochloric acid to dissolve chrome and nickel and have an actual brass watch. Has anyone of you ever tried that?

    • @brilliantradience

Not sure that's a good idea, it may be plated for a reason. If you try it give us an update and let us know if it tarnishes quicker.

I've read a little bit into that and brass should just like bronze form a protective patina. Have also heard about cases where pockets of zinc "rottet out"and left brittle copper behind, but I don't really know how/when that happens. Not every brass alloy is the same, and for example brass parts in lighters hold up very well in my experience. Either way, I'd try it on a Chinese watch for a few bucks first, won't hurt if something dramatic happens.
I'm lacking the equipment for a useful video but I'd absolutely post a small article on Reddit or somewhere else including pics. Only issue: Due to the current situation I won't be able to get watch and acid before Easter.

Sad that the dinner plate sizes dominate so much, especially in this design. Junghans solves it with the short lug-to-lug on some models. Shouldn’t be that difficult to get a lug-to-lug under 47mm. Next list suggestion: Best watches under(for example) 250$, with a lug-to-lug between 40 and at the very maximum 47 👍😊

For a One watch collection I'd go with a black or blue dial Submariner style or dive watch ... you can always swap out straps for different looks ... bronze tier I'd look at the Pagani Design or Parnis homage ... San Martin also makes a nice Submariner homage for a higher price. Uber cheap would be a simple dial Vostok Amphibia (no scuba dude, or submarine or paratrooper etc.) or the Casio Duro (hey Bill Gates wears one). Plenty of brands and looks and price points in this style.

Maybe the Alpha Explorer for next month? It's a 36mm Rolex Explorer Homage with Sapphire, 50m WR and a Seagull 2824 clone (which have been getting better over the years and basically match the original nowadays). I know homage watches are looked down upon but for about 100$ it makes a very good "one watch collection"

Noob question here, what is a lug?

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch  4 роки тому +1

It's the little part that sticks out that the strap attaches to. The lug width is the distance between the to lugs on one side of the watch, and that determines what size strap can be installed on the watch. The Lug to lug is the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the lug on the opposite side of the watch, which usually is the widest distance across the whole watch, and is sometimes also called the watches wingspan. The lug to lug distance is important for figuring out how the watch will wear on your wrist. If you have a small wrist and a watch with a large lug to lug, then the lugs might extend past your wrist and look awkward.

Please include the Seiko Solar SNE166 in an upcoming review. It has been around for a while but received little attention due to the ultra-CRAPPY quality of online promotional photos. But make no mistake, it looks extremely nice in person w/two-tone metals, AP-inspired bezel, and glinty applied indices which lean closer to GS territory than base Seiko. No joke.
It SLAYS the Seiko 5 "baby nautilus" which is hideously overpriced anyway. Also, despite being a bit of an automatic/hand-wound snob, having a solar option in the collection is a nice way to shake things up.
Check it out man! Was an impulse buy the other day but turned out to be a nice surprise.
