I'm a middle aged woman who took up ice skating in 2019 and LOVE it... but have no idea what I would want to do with it given I'm no spring chicken but I want to do more than just skate for myself. I'm interested in learning more about the different ice disciplines, mainly ice dancing. I am also interested in knowing more about coaching specialties and definitely a video on how to switch coaches. I've been thinking about it for a while and it feels like a breakup and I definitely don't want it to be taken personally!

do you think you could talk about what the best age to begin is in a future video? I learned how to skate when I was 7 but only started doing smaller tricks like skating backwards, leg lifts, and small jumps in the 2019-2020 winter when I was 10/11. I wanted to do keep going in the 2020-2021 winter but COVID sort of stopped that. If rinks are open by this November, I'll be starting again, but I'll be 13. Is that too late to get competitive and learn trickier jumps or would it just be harder to learn? thank you :)
Never too late!! If you have a passion for the sport and are willing to put the effort in, you can definitely achieve your goals

As a former skater and current coach would you do an episode on Coach Eteri? Results. Yes. But is she good for the sport based on the young peak ages of the athletes.

I think one thing you forgot to add is don't go with any coach who promises "fast" results or that they have some kind of secret magic thing nobody else knows to make said fast results happen. Even if it's true, there's so many variables involved, especially as an adult, that they cannot reasonably make that promise. By this, I mean something like "I could get you to pass Intermediate Moves in 6 months!" (starting from Pre-Pre) or something like that. Not just a generalized "you have potential" kind of thing. Working with one coach with that attitude, and having a student of his years later (after I quit partially because of working with him) try to poach me from my current coach with those kind of pitches, without exception it's BS. Even if they can get you some initial speedy progress, usually they're giving up on the actual quality needed to long-term progress in the sport, and usually take shortcuts on edges, flow, carriage, etc.
There's also the fact too besides the unmet expectations, the psychological style of such coaches usually works by placing the blame on the student for not meeting the expectations, with statements like "not having what it takes" and all that kind of thing. I think it's much better to go with a slower and more detailed coach that doesn't make explicit promises. After all, a coach cannot lay hands on you and make you skate, it's still up to you at the end of the day.
Hi Coach Michelle! I live in Monterey and the nearest ice rink is 45 minutes away. There's one they put up for Christmas but I really want to skate all year round. Any tips?

Is there any way I could find a coach to teach me so that I could learn the techniques enough to the point where I can do them, and use ice skating as a form of stress relief. I don't really want to perform I want to use it as a way to relieve stress. Advice?
Yea I’m sure you can just get coach to where you don’t compete and just do it for fun like beginners they don’t compete but get lessons
yeah, local rinks usually have group or private lessons for leisure skating. you can learn small tricks and how to glide in those classes!
How can foreign figure skaters get sponsors in the U.S. to teach figure skating and get job contracts?? How can they get free ice skating time? What rinks give free ice time in California and in Texas?

Im about to turn 15 in like... 3-4 months. Can i possibly try and make a living from competing. I mean... i have yet to master it... i have balance but ive been on ice once for an hour... lol
Do you mean make a living from shows? Aside from the very top skaters in the world, most skaters spend far more on training than they will ever get back in prize money if they place at a big competition. Figure skating is an extremely expensive sport unfortunately. You can absolutely compete, but expect to spend a lot of money doing so. As far as shows, if you are a good enough skater then yes you probably can make a living from skating professionally, but probably not for some years due to covid (although if you're only just learning to skate you probably have a good 10 years ahead of you before you get to that level).
