Electrifying the TransAmerica Trail

- This summer, we made the 7,700-mile trek across the TransAmerica Trail (TAT), a network of mostly dirt and gravel roads designed for vehicles to be able to travel coast-to-coast with minimal pavement and maximum adventure. It’s not uncommon to see off-road vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, or even horses on the trail. But for two electric trucks to drive the whole thing, Atlantic to Pacific, and to do it in one go? This was a first. stories.rivian...

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. We believe there is a more responsible way to explore the world and are determined to make the transition to sustainable transportation an exciting one. We designed our emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles to challenge what’s possible. We hope they inspire you to do the same.
What a beautiful series. We need a long way up movie version.
stories are great. now annouce some news so the stocks can get back on track pls RJ!
This is a legit overland! So proud of Rivian for their achievement!
So cool! I'm impressed.
CyberTruck... or Rivian... it's going to be a tough choice. Maybe I'll just borrow that HMMMV you're working on
Superb work from all the Rivian Team !!! Europe is waiting for you !!! Greetings from Barcelona :=)
More of this trip please 🔥
That UI scrolling map lag at 4:17 ugh *shivvers*
Well spotted... hopefully that doesn't make it to production 😬
Considering it's a preproduction vehicle, it wasn't too bad.
@@rvboyett it’s officially in production.
Nothing a little patch can’t fix
@@juanreyes3336 heh, *hopefully*
That's some hard-core off-roading
Lightweight off roading. the Cybertruck is built to WIN the Baja 1000.
I don't know if it's video editing/creative direction type team at Rivian or what they seem to love giving their official videos some vintage film styling and I kinda love it. Teared up a little bit, not gonna lie.
These vehicles seem to have a humane soul and positive spirit because of people that are responsible for their existence seem to as well.
I almost teared up, too. The style of the video, the spirit of the people, the sense of adventure, and then SEEING THE NATURAL WORLD…I felt it.
It would have been nice to say how they recharged along the way
Go to MT they have a full article about it

Incredible, let's go!
Holy moly! Now that's what I call a real adventure.
Congratulations! And it wasn’t that long ago when people laughed at the thought that a truck could be electric powered, can go off road and be rugged. This is even better than what we dreamed it could be!
the Rivian is Built FAKE TOUGH , the Tesla CYBERTRUCK is Built REAL TOUGH , is less EXPENSIVE and has SUPERIOR SPEC & Performance.
@@markplott4820 The cybertruck is a joke
@@themaddog9202 - what Exactly makes the Cybertruck a JOKE ?
@@markplott4820Idk, maybe the shitty edgy look.Maybe it is tesla's shitty reliability or maybe its how tesla makes it hard for their customers to fix their own product
Congrats to the whole team for making trips like this possible!
So glad to see such extensive real-world testing of these trucks in exactly the kinds of conditions people want to use them for.
I'm sure the R1S will be just as capable! Can't wait to see you test it! Better yet, can't wait to see one in my driveway!
P. S. It would be great to have the FIRST Rivian in Nevada!!
The time invested to promote this truck has been insane. Hope you did similar stuff with the R1S, I am really looking forward to see more of the SUV.
I can only imagine how fun that drive was...to drive a R1T
I’ve never cared for the outdoors until now. I’m waiting for my R1S to start exploring. Great job to the Rivian team for designing such a capable BEV that just does it all.
black bear pass is #1 on my "i'll never do that again" list
This is simply AWESOME!!! Thanks so much for leading the way Rivian!
I’d love to see the logistics behind the trip like:
- Average speed
- Average distance per day
- How long did you spend charging?, - Where are the charging locations?- - Any breakdowns?
I’d also love to see a series where you guys do a breakdown on the towing capabilities and how it affects the range.
Motor trend wrote a whole series of articles about the trip.
@@haydenb7546 awesome! Thank you!
@@haydenb7546 the MT article says nothing about the chargers they used other than saying they charged the car in Georgia and that one of the engineers panicked when they used too much battery by accelerating a lot.
The truck can tow 11000 lbs. Towing a large trailer can cut your range in half.
Best of luck to you and your company, the more electric options, the better!
Lets, see IF Rivian can Deliver 100k FIRST , then we shall see Whats What.
My dream car
I was never into SUV or Pickup type of cars … but this one omg, I love it!
the only suv in the field..👍
I'm waiting for a Rivian movie for all of the docuseries packed in 1 movie.
I cannot wait to take my family on adventours in our R1S
Very cool! I want too!)
Great promotion video👍👍 proves you really don't have to fear going EV
Will there be an accommodation for a winch ?
What are the two red dot lights below the tailights?
Rivian should make this a pay to do road trip. I would be there in a heartbeat.
Please make a proper one way up like video, It would make an amazing series
What a great video. You guys are knocking it out of the park. It was cool to see one of your SUVs here in Sedona the other day!
Can't wait for the R1S release.
Seems we have tough guy in the electric Ute category, I hope the outside water has no effect on the batteries and motors in the long run..👏💙
I can only imagine the range anxiety, running out of energy in the middle of nowhere. What’s the remedy? Sit there a few days with portable generators to power up the batteries?
How about a feature length version of this or an episodic?
#landroverdrive turned into riviandrive when it is available in Norway. 🙂🙂
Good that very good 😊👍 nice love it good
SILENCE! Enjoy the silence! Amazing!
Nature & Cars❤️
I want one, I want one badly. But still: haven't seen the bad or cold weather version for the kitchen or tent (e.g. an annex or a cabin, ...). Kitchen is for 4 people (great!), but what about the tent (3 person)? I'd go for two 2 person tents (no recommended version yet), or a 2 to 3 people tent with annex that would accommodate another 2 persons). Please, Rivian, give "official" alternatives.
You can have a tent on the bed and another on the roof at the same time. Oh, and you can have as many regular tents as you want on the ground too.
Love you. ;)
Ravian could branch out in to expedition adventures as a side line company let along selling trucks 🛻
When the SUV version becomes available I hope I’m in the position to be able to say yes please I’ll have one 😁👍
amazing 🤩🤩🤩🤩
That's so beautiful and scary lol.
The truck looks nice except for two things. One that needs a dog mode that keeps the HVAC going and notifies the owner using the phone if the battery or the HVAC fails. It also would be nice if the daily recommended state of charge would be 80% instead of 70%
Steady Mobbin
The trail looks incredible! But is there a way to avoid Black Bear Pass? I can see accidents happen every now and then there and maybe not dare enough to take.
There are multiple ways to avoid Black Bear pass. It’s spectacular, but so are all the other roads in that area, even the paved ones!
You can avoid the whole trail entirely so no theres no imaginary road block to skipping BBP
@@mattbrew11 what's with the attitude man
@@aminahabdullah4972 the trail goes across THE COUNTRY of course theres a way to go around a 12 mile section.
The real TAT route doesn’t go over Black Bear Pass. It goes over Ophir.
Awesome 😍😍😍❤❤❤😎😎
I am so so ready to get an R1T hopefully by 2023 🤞
Taking a mechanical engineer perspective it would be even more "off road" prepared if the vehicles came with a front wintch with a "in build" motor in cases that it will require another vehicle to pull it, so RIVIAN here's an idea that dounds interesting for such capable pick up
Totally desirable! Sooo cool
...I wonder if the military is considering a Rivian for its off-road performance (45 degrees rock climbing, 3.5 feet
of water, 15 in ground clearance, tows 11000 pounds, 2 person tent, kitchen with a sink), silent sneak up on enemy,
400 miles range.
Absolutely not.
Can you make a video showing the behind the scenes and logistics of charging?
I already see one of the future episodes of The Grand Tour, in which the trinity will go on a long journey on the Rivian R1S, GMC Hummer EV SUV and Lucid Gravity =))
I would like to test drive one of these and compare to the Tesla cyber truck once its out. should b fun
Vem pro Brasil 🥺
come to Brazil 🥺
so these trucks don't need to be charged???? or solar?
Was the final location Port Orford Bay?
When you plan to come to india without truck concept due to road so narrow.
Rattle can that beast and put cover it with stickers that will be this vehicle in 20 years
My question is simple, when in the middle of mission the batere is empty, what you should do?. If convetional truck can bring gasoline reverse, what rivian do?
Rivian, can ya'll make an electric, full-size van?
Great video but I was hoping to hear about how they "Electrified" the route.
Usually when I go off-roading I bring extra fuel tanks so when I run out in the middle of no where I can put fuel in and continue. How does the Rivian charge after a few days out in a remote area?
With an EV you have to plan the trip to make sure you can reach a charger before the battery runs out of energy. With a truck you also have the option of bringing a small gas/diesel/propane generator on the bed to extend the range, but charging will be slow that way. It is also possible to recharge a Rivian truck by towing it with a gas vehicle.
Do you plan on running out of gas in the middle of nowhere?
If your combined range on gasoline with extra Jerry cans is 600 miles.... Do you try to a 650 mile trip? No.
If your EV range is 500 miles, do you try to do a 550 mile trip? No.
@@edsgarage001 obviously small trail trips one can easily plan. I’ve been off-road where I spent all day just on a 14- mile fire road/trail to get to the end and be too low on fuel to get back out. These were very difficult trails and required winching at times to get up some of the terrain. If it rained we were stuck for a few days before we could get out. Luckily I’ve done this enough to bring an extra 10 gallons of fuel to get back out and make it to a gas station. It can be alarming how much fuel is needed for hardcore off-roading. Maybe the EV does better on battery than what a Jeep does on fuel. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@smarticus6384 Evs are quite a bit more efficient, especially at lower speeds. Not using any power when at a stand still unlike gasoline vehicles. Plus any time you're going down hill, you get to regenerate some power back without using brake pads to slow you down.
I think people are going to be very surprised at just how good they can be off road.
@@edsgarage001 good point.
why could one not do it west to east?
Did I miss how often and where they recharged?
How often?? That wouldn’t be an indicator of anything. Thats like asking how many times did you stop for gas cross country. Speed, weather, aggressiveness, temperature etc all play a part.
This wasn’t a big data dump it was a film about
The passion
The amount of time hours spent charging at what KW rate matters more. Not the amount of charge stops.
Can we get a dual motor version for longer range? No need for tank mode plz. Range is King
how to charge in the wilde
Would love to know more about the infrastructure that enabled this.

It looks like you did “parts” of the TAT.
That's great and all but are you putting charging stations along the route so the rest of us can do it?
Where did they charge the vehicles?
there are enough places to charge in the back roads?
Not at this time. You have to carefully plan the trip to make sure you can reach chargers before the battery dies.
@@cruiser97eric1 thanks. stay safe
Rivian engineers, how many “real life” validation miles have you covered so far?
my understanding is that rivian vehicles have logged over 500k miles to date
Is there a different series where we actually talk about the vehicle and its performance driving on the sand?
All the Rivian PR stuff is like this. Very fluffy and not much if any practical info. They expect you to seek out the reviews.
Which other brands do this? Buy one and tell us all. I should have mind in 4 months
Driving on sand uses a lot more energy than driving on other types of terrain. That is true for gas as well as electric.
where did you land on the west coast?
When could I pick mine up?
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This car.. god damn i want it, but i dont think this will be available in finland? :
Is there a snorkel option to get the clean air above the dust ?? !!
Just needs some off road rubber option and it would’ve been even easier , been enjoying this slowly as it’s drop fed via Motor Trend 👍🏻
Clean air for you?
EVs dont have an air intake dude
Its on ATs. An MT sucks a lot of range
@@mattbrew11 lots of EV’s do need cooling and have ducts or vents in or below the grill, not for the engine, but for the brakes, air-con, steering and even for the batteries
But yes, I meant the snorkel for cabin air aswell 👍🏻
@@JohnInSale exactly zero EVs have ever or will ever have a snorkel for those things.

I have questions! Haha
How many times did you guys have to recharge??
This is my concern. We never get actual hard details. I would want to see the real route they took. The website said they were driving for about 300 hours and I'd imagine about 100 hours were spent sitting at a charger.
@@devinjohnson8623 they charged overnight

I want this vehicle in Australia. I know you have a plan to bring it here, just giving you one persons request to bring it here please.
Please post the map route!
The TAT is a route put together by dual sport motorcycle enthusiasts, GPS routes and roll charts are sold on their website.
This is great, how about putting resources into building the vehicle?
I'm an owner and would like to see this company succeed, love my truck but how about having outside funded people making these videos. I get disappointed when I think this company could fail for not putting out product .
I'm doubtful this is realistically possible for the average person. Showing a map of where the chargers were that they used would have helped. Doesn't take away from the vehicle though in my opinion.
good day, can be connected to a Tesla super charger
Its cute and all but I feel like this would be dramatically more effective if you went into the weeds A LITTLE and talked about the charging experience of the journey. As a whole the Rivian PR stuff has seemed to just ignore the practical concerns of the public and that is perhaps doing a disservice to your brand specifically and EVs on the whole.
No. there will be a flood of details as people buy and use these. Let it play out if youre scared
How many hours were spent sitting at chargers? Or having to drive extra pavement to get to chargers?
Many. That is the nature of driving an EV today.

tesla products are outdated decade old technology (e.g., only has cameras not even radar, no laser to detect other objects).
Tesla self driving is only level 2, whereas Rivian is level 3 autonomy (on an off-road, you don't have to keep your
eyes on the road and don't have to keep your hands on the wheel).
I want to see the truck do amazing things not people tell me about it, that's how you sell it. Let the truck speak for itself.
