I'm enjoying your TAT videos (just watched your new Arkansas section) and getting pumped about doing this. I live in TN, but this section is probably where I'll start, maybe at Linville Falls and work my way back to TN). I just got the NC and TN maps from the TAT website. I'm in a 3rd Gen 4Runner, so I should be fine if/when 4WD is necessary. Are there any sections where a 2WD would struggle (wondering in case some of my friends join that don't have 4WD)? I've heard the Hurricane Creek section can be challenging (but I see on the TAT map there is also another way around that). Thanks!
You 100% need four-wheel-drive for hurricane Creek but there is a bypass. But I would at least put all of your buddies in your 4runner and take them down it. It’s awesome!
Sorry for the late response!!! Gaia is the mapping software we use and you can purchase the full maps from the Trans America Trail website. We have a discount on our website for the Gaia subscription if you still looking
In the NC section it’s quite of bit of the drive time but not the total mileage. In other words. The most time spent on the trail is on one lane but it’s not a ton of the mileage lol. So 10 hrs out of the 24 it took
Great video. Assuming you guys aren't Subaru haters and might have some knowledge of their capabilities, do you think a stock Outback (older, non-CVT) with good AT tires could manage this trip?
Paul Speakman 100% yes. There was only 1 spot that had a bit of washout that I assumed would be fixed by now. But the Nantahala area had a water crossing that during the middle of the summer at a dry period would be doable.
This is AWESOME! I just learned about the TAT. I bought my first motorcycle about 3 months ago and live in NC not too far from the Parkway. I have a few questions if it's okay. (1) Would a regular gps have signal for the entire ride? Is there a particular one you would recommend? The one I have is just an old garmin. (2) How remote are those fire roads. Would you feel comfortable riding this alone or would it be best to partner up on it? Thanks
I rode most of the TAT a few years ago on a DR 650. Stopped at Utah. Most regular GPS would have signal the entire way. Which Garman do you have? Learning to input tracks on your gps is an art in itself. The fire roads are pretty remote, a partner is good if you can find one. We started out with five, but broke down in groups of 2 and 3. Less is more, I didn't listen to this advise, and took all kinds of crap I didn't need. The passes in CO are a Bit@h on a heavily loaded bike. I want to ride it again, but I will take a lighter bike with a lot less gear. Fuel Injection is your friend.
Ed Green Hey! If you google Trans American Trail you can purchase the trail maps from there. The guy who mapped them Sam keeps updated trails on the site. Best to get the most updated ones.
I think FS 63 has been closed a long time. I went through it in July and it was closed then. I still went because I didn’t want to take the detour, and it was washed out, but the Jeep would have made it easy (at the time I went through)
Thank you 😊
Wait did you get the guy from Outlander to be a dirt bike overlander for you? 😂❤
Are the camp sites hard to find?
@@JoeMunday-v7w there are lots of camp grounds not too far off the path. The maps have some marked.
@@OverlandPioneers sweet thanks.
Very nice video. Better put together than some with 100 times the subscribers.
Thank you!!!!!!!

Great video, thank you for taking time to make it and sharing!
What's the device at 6:20 showing your route?
It’s called a roll chart. Moto users love them because they can hit the odometer reset at each point to know how far to the next turn.
Overland Pioneers thank you!
That was a pretty sweet trip and what beautiful views you got with the drone! I need to start looking into that TAT and get me some maps.
Looked like an awesome time. Nice video

Awesome trip and vid. Do you carry a chain saw for downed trees over the road?
We carry an electric chainsaw now
How much of the trail is one lane?
