While very funny in a 'Karl' way, it's bordering on sad how much Karl appears to want to ingratiate himself with Ricky, trying to use his name in desperately forced ways. Though now that I think about it, he did the same with Steve's name later on.

It’s the greatest worst radio show ever made
In all honesty, this is why I don't listen to the radio. Nothing would even come close to this for comedic value, shodiness, and chemistry that these three have. All other radio is just so damn boring. This is truly unique.
Yes. I think it is my favourite episode of all of these. It's a perfect storm.
I love how in the last two episodes with Claire, it was much calmer, much smoother and it sounded more like a professional radio show. The minute Karl is back is already back to the old chaos. Within seconds of Karl's return - Ricky: "I'M ALREADY ANNOYED" and the ads don't work and along with the start of rockbusters, educating Ricky, and "if you're mam's heavy you win a CD". That's why I fucking love you Karl
Yeah. I think we probably needed those 2 average Claire episodes to relax the show and then unleash the great run of episodes now and to start the prime of the show.

@@DJBassBoomBottom Honestly I was the same, but I listened to both the Sturgess ones yesterday and they aren't bad. The vibe is totally different and it's definitely missing Karl, but I probably won't skip them anymore. They're still enjoyable.
I've listened to these podcasts so much I'm convinced when I die and my life flashes before my eyes at some point I will hear Ricky's laugh.

I love how Stephen assures Ricky and Karl that the listeners love them for the general shoddyness of the show. It's so true.

I'm starting to realize what makes The Ricky Gervais so surpisingly relistenable through all these years. It's a deep story about both friendship and work at the same time. We are constantly reminded of how painfully dependent these three fellas are on each other in order to make a product that has a passing resemblance of being radio. And through that very struggle, the radio show emerges. It's the perfect radio show 'about nothing'. And of course everything.
This show had no resemblance to conventional radio hosting, that's why it is so brilliant!

I think what makes these xfm recordings special over the later podcasts is that because Karl is technically producer he feels like he needs to keep things quality and professional and gets frustrated when Rick and Steve mess about, and yet he also says the dumbest maddest sometimes rudest things ever, it's absolutely hilarious.

Don't know about anyone else, but the more I relisten to these shows the more I appreciate the tiny moments that you wouldnt even pick up on the first few times around. Like I already know the crux of the jokes and how its gonna go, but the little mannerisms still make me laugh, like the way Steve just quietly and unconvincingly says "...right" when Karl says that "if they pump you with all sorts of stuff, it wants to come out" at 52:05

The webcam wasn't like a modern livestream, it was an old one that takes a picture every five seconds or so.

The is probably the best xfm episode of them all.
It baffles me when i remember this was broadcast over 20 years ago. Its got such a timeless quality to it. Its only when they make topical references that i remember the times they were in

I agree. I know some people enjoy the ones without Karl but I always skip them. I listen to these for the dynamic of Ricky, Steve, and Karl, so I'm not interested if one of them isn't in an episode.
Some of the best ones are without Karl as Steve and Ricky are able to do more

This episode marks the turning point in the way Ricky views Karl.. Up until now Ricky has been saying he loves Karl and cant wait to see him each week. After this he starts getting much more insulting toward Karl, truly a pivotal episode. It's also one of the best.
