    Hey guys, just wanna apologize over the whole "no-one plays Pokemon games for their story" thing. Apparently a lot of you do! Had no idea. That does admittedly confuse me a little, I mean if you wanna play an RPG for its story I'd recommend something like Mass Effect or one of the Final Fantasy's, but y'know, to each his own.

I've enjoyed not only your movie reviews but also your game reviews since you do such a great job and your movie reviews are so great that I've been trying to convince the Renegades from Renegades React to do reactions to your movie reviews. I don't play Pokemon because the gameplay is so dull. The universe is fascinating, but I just bring myself to play through those repetitive, one-sided battles that, for all intents and purposes, lack strategy. It's a shame, really.

      Xelroxx but not everyone wants a throwback Thursday all the time whenever they get a new Pokemon game. So it should be optional so you can move on through. They should also have breaks to save before every legendary. They made a huge mistake here with tapu koko being the one case where you can't save right before catching it for the first time. Instead, the closest back you can go is right before battling the champion so technically you haven't beat the game until you battle tapu koko and catch it.

    Is anyone annoyed by how you can't preview haircuts in the game? I spent almost half of my money at the start of the game trying to find a haircut and colour I was happy with because I didn't know what they looked like. But anyway, great review Suspect!

    Glad to see you back! By the looks of things, Sun & Moon fixes a lot of issues X & Y, OR & AS had, or the whole series in general. After playing more turn based RPGs like Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, both series that use a battle system on exposing weaknesses and collecting monsters, like Pokemon, manage to be challenging and more fast paced. I still enjoy Pokemon, but after playing the Gen 6 games, It opened my eyes to how flawed the series is, despite me loving Black & White 2.

    To anyone who needs help remembering types strengths and weaknesses, one of the more uncommon ones to remember is Psychic, and a good way to look at Psychic is, it resists Fighting (because that's pretty much code for using your head over your fists) and Psychic has three weaknesses, Which are probably the 3 most common mental fears (Bugs, Ghosts, and the dark!)
    I started playing Pokemon when I was 5 or 6, I'm now 21, and I still struggle to remember all the strengths and weaknesses... But I always like the way of remember Psychic! :)

    To go along with that point of making us the true main character: think about being Lillie (or even a male version of Lillie, like, Lyle or something) Ya sure maybe you still get a starter like any other game but imagine having your team and Cosmog through the whole game (though maybe cosmog would be more like a key item through the main story) and going through only to have Nebby: a Pokemon that you would have a huge attachment to if you were Lillie, evolve into Lunala/Solgaleo by the end! The reveal would have been so much more powerful

    | SPOILERS!!! |
    I have to disagree with you there in terms of your player character not being important to the overall narrative. Throughout the story, you help others characters realize who they are. As Lillie travels with you, your relationship with your Pokemon demonstrates the good of training Pokemon to her and results in her being a far more independent person than she ever was before. Hau realizes he doesn't need to be better than you, but wants to work as hard as he can and live up to his full potential. He becomes his own person, not needing to compare himself to others, much unlike other characters like Serena, where much of her character is her trying to be a better trainer than you.

    I don't play Pokemon solely for the story, but the absence of a story would hurt a lot since Pokemon has a lot of potential in that regard. Although, I do agree they could tone down on how much dialogue is shoved at you in such a small amount of time, even though I'm not too bothered by it.

    • @Keeneye47_Wolfkeen
      @Keeneye47_Wolfkeen 7 років тому +3

      1. That's a self imposed challenge.
      2. People want to have a challenge and enjoy the game still.
      3. That's an alternative way of playing a Pokemon game.
      I get what suspect is saying, since let's be fair some of these Pokemon games can be EASY AS F**K! (Black and White comes to mind for one) Adding a sort of 'Normal and Hard mode' would allow newcomers or people who just want a casual experience to enjoy themselves no problem. While giving the long time fans of the series a new challenge to conquer.

    • @TheUnusualSuspect
      @TheUnusualSuspect  7 років тому +5

      I never got the appeal of Nuzlocke's. I mean why would I purposefully make the game more DIFFICULT? RPGs are all about the goal of making the game EASIER (i.e. levelling up, upgrading stats etc.). The whole idea of Nuzlocke's even being a thing goes to prove how easy the games are.

    Your point about the Dex Nav is pretty ignorant. You can find the EXACT patch of grass in the Dex if you've at least seen the pokemon in a battle before.

    • @komarunaegi7460
      @komarunaegi7460 7 років тому +4

      +Typhon Destroyer
      I wouldn't say it's ignorant. The DexNav provided an in-game checklist of all the Pokémon you could capture in the current area you were in without making you have to open up several different menus for it.
      It was a nice, convenient touch that was easy to see on the bottom screen. Plus, I agree with him when he said the gold/diamond crowns you get for catching them all in the current route you're in felt satisfying. It felt like I accomplished something even if it was just a tiny aesthetic reward.
      OR/AS didn't have specific Pokémon *only* catch in specific patches of grass in a route. Every Pokémon was available in the same patches of grass or bodies of water with differing encounter rates. So it didn't need that extra feature from S/M.
      Besides, S/M's Dex is still very vague on how to catch certain Pokémon. It doesn't tell us which Pokémon are SOS-only, which are rustling grass/bush-only, etc.
      I never would've guessed Goomy and Happiny were SOS-only until I looked it up elsewhere.

    • @typhondst3363
      @typhondst3363 7 років тому

      For the simplicity point, Yeah, you're right. As for the crowns, you get crowns for each island for seeing and catching each pokemon. Also, Bulbapedia exists for a reason.

    • @komarunaegi7460
      @komarunaegi7460 7 років тому +4

      +Typhon Destroyer
      Bulbapedia is a fan-run website and is not officially affiliated with Game Freak or Nintendo in any major way. If it wasn't for how dedicated, studious, and patient the Pokemon fanbase is in looking into every detail of every game, sites like Bulbapedia and Serebii wouldn't exist.
      It's Game Freak's job as game developers to make catching and seeing every Pokemon in the Dex engaging and not too aggravating to do. Without relying on die-hard fans to figure out the esoteric stuff on their own. B2/W2 did that, OR/AS took what B2/W2 did and made it better, and while S/M added advancements to make finding Pokemon easier on its own, S/M still took a few steps back.

    • @komarunaegi7460
      @komarunaegi7460 7 років тому +2

      +Nebby
      My dude. That entire point doesn't make any sense. Even if you scan QR Codes for Dex info on Pokemon, the Dex doesn't tell you exactly how to find it. It doesn't tell you which Pokemon are SOS-only, or which Pokemon are weather-only. Or which Pokemon are SOS-weather only.
      Many people, whether they have friends that also play Pokemon or not, could spend hours and hours wandering through Lush Jungle for a Goomy or Castform thinking they could just find it normally in the grass because that's what the Dex said when that's not how you find them.
      It's cool to have friends and other people to trade with and scan QR codes with and it's a neat feature, but it doesn't change the fact that some Pokemon are near-impossible to figure out getting on our own. None of the NPCs even hint that you can *only* get Pokemon through SOS chaining to begin with, and the Pokemon that *are* exclusive to it are very, very rare.

    Great review. I was going to point out that they purposely made the battles easy because I think the games were geared for young kids, but your alter ego brought that up and you also responded to that :). On top of that, I think that if they made the battles too hard to start with (which causes the player to lose from the git go), the player will get discouraged and will stop playing it (or keep resetting the game until the player wins).

    • @TheUnusualSuspect
      @TheUnusualSuspect  7 років тому +2

    Another idea for the GTS: ability to filter Pokemon based on held items. No longer will people need to ask for Slowkings to ensure their Slowpoke holding a King's Rock doesn't get ripped off.
    No longer will I have to wait for a friend who owns the game before I can get my coveted Dusknoir.
    Plus, if you have a rare Pokemon and your too lazy to find/earn a particular held item, lovely blackmail!

      There's a Spanish youtuber who is a huge dork about RPGs and the stuff that is prevalent in the genre (complicated and deep battle systems, deep stories and characters, etc), and he exclusively plays the Pokémon games for their story. He said it, he plays the games like a regular JRPG. He beats the league then he doesn't play anymore. He's been a fan since he was a child though, and he said that the stuff that attracts him of the franchise is the Pokémon and their backstory. And he still managed to effectively make a 50 minute video ranking the Pokémon generations, saying 1000 words a second (and ranking only 5 generations, because it's unfair to compare first gen to the others and he hadn't played 7th gen).

    If I'm going to be honest, Sun and Moon is alright, Maybe I need to get in the later game part where things might kick up, my favorite story wise and gameplay wise has to be BW2, great story, a lot of postgame content that can rival HGSS IMO, but can't really beat it. The only thing I wish they had is if you can't face Hilda or Hilbert instead of N. But facing N is cool. I hope the next games are DPPT Remakes, I'm replaying them and hoping they can get a major upgrade and see the megas of the starters. Sorry for rambling.

    I was similarly confused why people were saying this was a challenging game. I started playing Moon recently after about a 2 year dry spell of no Pokemon, and I'd forgotten a lot of the types and was always having to look up type charts, yet I managed to beat the game in less time than any previous edition without blacking out even once. This game has a lot going for it, the visuals are beautiful and the exp. share is great to have, it still had me addicted, but difficulty is not one of its high points.

I'm sure the lack of difficulty stems from not being a child, as when I first played Pokemon, I didn't understand the mechanics fully and found the games (in my case, Ruby and Sapphire) pretty challenging. Now days, the games are a walk in the park.
      If challenge is what you're looking for in Pokemon, the competitive battle scene is what you're looking for. Breeding, EV's, IV's, Egg Moves, Abilities, Natures, and Team Synergy - all of these aspects are crucial in the competitive metagame.

  • @Jirachibi25
    @Jirachibi25 7 років тому +4

    A couple of things..
    IV training should not be scrapped. The point of it is you put a lot of work into making your Pokemon perfect, so you have more of a bond with it, which is a main theme of the series as well as anyone can do anything. You'll probably have more of a bond with the Talonflame you spent hours perfecting and getting the right movepool, IV's, EV's, etc. than a random fletchling you found and raised to 50.
    Hidden Abilities cant be done with the capsule because..they're HIDDEN abilities. Hidden. Secretive. They're special abilities you cannot normally get. The whole point of them is a Fletchling with its hidden ability is a Special thing that regular Fletchling do not have, so letting you change it to its hidden ability would take away all the worth of a Hidden Ability in the first place.
    I found the games the hardest in the series. I have been playing pokemon for around 15-16 years now, and Sun and Moon were the first times I have EVER whited out and lost a non online battle. Even in the beginning, i lost to the first trial captain, I lost to the first totem almost (Had 1 Pokemon left in the red), and throughout the whole game I lost plenty of times. its not just me either, most people iv'e seen that have the game have lost at least a few times in the game and the ones that didnt lose only didnt because they used OP/Super good Pokemon like Dragonite and Garchomp and Gengar.
    Last thing I have a slight issue with is the camera complaint. For what? Its an RPG, there's no platforming or time limits or real time battles, you walk back and bump into something? Okay..nothing bad happens, you just move slightly to the left and keep walking, no real big deal.
    Other than those 4 things, i pretty much agree. :)

    • @TheUnusualSuspect
      @TheUnusualSuspect  7 років тому +7

      Really? You get more of a bond with 1 egg of dozens as opposed to a monster you met along your adventure? And it'd be fine if it was 'IV training' but it's not, it's 'IV breeding'. You don't train your Pokemon to get good IVs, you put a Pokemon in a daycare and have it hump a Ditto over and over again and every Pokemon that ISN'T PERFECT you either release or wonder trade. It's beyond fucked up and I don't see how you can form a bond with a Pokemon that's the end result of THAT.
      But I do agree with your hidden ability thoughts. Perhaps instead Pokemon should be able to change ability free of charge and then the super expensive ability capsule item should be used for hidden ones. That way it keeps 'hidden abilities' more hidden than usual, but there would still be a way for normal Pokemon to unlock them.
      Just reiterating what I said in my review about difficulty, it's gonna be different for all players. I never personally whited out once in my adventure. But you obviously didn't fare the same. So it makes the idea of difficulty modes all the more important.
      And a camera is important in RPGs! You have a WORLD TO EXPLORE! Full camera control would allow you to be in awe of such a world! The camera in Sun/Moon does indeed obscure a lot. It's not a big complaint though; more of an idea for future releases.

    over 800+ hours in iv breeding in Omega Ruby- it's much faster when you have tools to do it (good dittos or a few 5 iv male pokemon from different egg groups) - the only flaw in Sun and Moon I see here is the lack of pokebank- I have tools in Omega Ruby that I wanted to transfer to Sun&Moon to make the proccess faster, but I can't
    Anyway, I'm good at multitasking, I bred quite a few good Alola Vulpixes during watching this review :D Good review, but as a pokemon veteran I'm used to much harder stuff, ev training and breeding in previous games was much harder, so slowly we're getting better.

  • @fernando98322
    @fernando98322 7 років тому +1

    Gen V is often referred to as the best games. Why? Because of their story mostly. So, yeah. Story is important in Pokémon games. I don't see a problem with the story being focused on Lillie. There's also a story of your character going and exploring Alola. You only meet with Lillie in the beginning of an island, somewhere in between and at the end around the Kahuna fight. The only exception is the climax battle at the Aether Foundation and Poni Island. But at that point you should be invested in her story. Completing the Alola Dex which only have 302 Pokémon including Mythical, is easier than never. I will agree the game starts slow but it puts a lot of story and characters introduction so if you are invested in story which most Pokémon games are (in general, not only main games) it's not really a hazzle. Though I welcome a skip tutorials feature a la Banjo-Kazooie. And I know you kinda adressed this complain but honestly, you cannot say the game is easy when you pick the 'easy mode' option. And I don't agree with that free experience thing you said, it doesn't make much sense to me. It's true that trainers don't have many Pokémon and I'm so happy someone adresses this issue that exists since Gen VI; I'd love for that difficulty setting that would make trainers have more Pokémon and better AI/strategies. But, you thought there wasn't a challenge thanks to being overleveled. Which means you probably outspeed most Pokémon, and you even faint Kahuna's teams and Totems, which both are where the challenge is found, with one hit and that's the problem of the EXP. share. When you get a 6 IV Ditto from the internet, breeding although tedious becomes easy and quick. I've got many 5-6 IVs in so little time. And if you don't like running around on Tauros; that last island in the Pelago, the hot springs that raise friendship, actually are able to hatch eggs. Put 18 eggs overnight and there you go, you should get a better IV Pokémon and be able to continue breeding. Though I won't have any problem if they get rid of IVs. I'm not sure if you give rounded scores, if that's the case I guess I understand that 8 score but I think that's pretty low, considering the cons you list are not as bad as you make them seem to be. But hey, I'm interested in those Star Wars reviews so I'll stay in your channel for a bit and if anything else, I'm glad people are honest while reviewing.

    I suppose I'm in the minority of these comments in that I don't play these games for the story either. I've been loving Moon since I picked it up but the story is just so obtuse. I loved in old games how you were pretty much left to your own devices and could explore/progress as you saw fit. In this, there's a cutscene in every fucking new route, town, building, whatever, and it's all unskippable. I could care less about any of the characters or whatever paper-thin plot they drew up for this, honestly.

    1: You forgot that the pokedex in sun/moon is only 300 Pókemon big before pokémon bank, and you only need that in order to get the shiny charm, which is why you would fill the dex in the first place. 2: You almost never need 6IVs. For competitive, 4-5IVs will be enough 99/100 times. Also, bottle caps are VERY easy to find: You can get 1 every 150FC in the festival Plaza! If you REALLY want to breed, get OR/AS breeding in that game is stupidly easy. 3: you don't really NEED perfect IVs, usually EVs will get you far enough, and you can reset them/train them passivly in the poké pelago. The only stats you may need 31 IVs on are HP and speed (if you're running a fast pokémon). Defenses and attacks can be boosted mid-battle or not at all and you will still be fine for the most part. While playing online, outplays will be far better than having 10 extra stat points on your defense. You don't need perfect pokémon for going online. What you DO need is a brain and some experience to make the right moves at the right times. As long as you have the correct nature, the right EVs and a solid enough strategy, you will do well. 4: "Hidden abilities are ofen their best ones" I dare you to use a serene grace Sawsbuck. Or a light metal Metagross. Or a heavy metal Bronzong. Hidden abilities are no better than first/second abilities overall. You can still make countless amazing teams without any hidden abilities. Also, as long as you give a sh*t about the nature of your starter at the beginnig of the game, you will easily get a competitive pokémon out of that afterwards. Though I do agree with you that changing the natures would be pretty good.

    Sun and Moon is weird with its difficulty. It can be easy.
    -Accidentally one-shotted 2 of the Island Gurdians, as well as being a slightly higher level
    -Went through entire game in a little over 3 days
    -Overleveled through the whole game
    Or it can be hard:
    -The Battle Tree. Do I need to explain?
    -Post-Game requires some level of grinding
    -This is an easter egg (i think), but on Akala Island there is a building that when you go upstairs, there is a room that only unlocks after you beat the main story. You fight Game Freak (wow) and they have really good pokemon, level 62, good abilities and moves, and there are 6 pokemon. Super hard if you're not leveled up.

    Well there's a reason why a lot of, if not most, serious competitive players gen their mons. Imo sun and moon is quite challenging if you use new gen7 pokemon, they are mostly very slow which means not only do they attack last, but are also subjected to constant hax by npc. They also generally have very exploitable weaknesses, either bad stats/typing and trash offensive moves.

      Spartan Jim Ultimately, I'd say it's a sacrifice that has to be made if the objective of the game is to focus its main campaign around your journey through *Insert Region Here*. If you pivoted the story to focus around something such as Lillie and her mother, then you automatically have to cast aside any notion of your trainer having their own purpose, because the purpose would be set FOR you.
      Admittedly, I'd love for more Pokemon games to follow plotlines like Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness (which are two fantastic titles if you haven't played them), but the core Pokemon series should always try to maintain a blank character.

    I agree so much about the whole "competitive breeding" thing, it's something i've thought for years. I've been playing pkmn ever since red and blue, i love the series to bits, I'd LOVE to create teams and plunge into online battling.
    But I can't do that because of the sheer amount of time it takes to breed a competetitive 'mon. I'm a 27 years old woman and my gaming time is very, VERY limited. I cannot spend that amount of time just to get one competitive pkmn, let alone 6 or more if I want to make different times. An entire, VERY fun feature of the game is precluded to me simply because of real life and adult responsibilities , and that's bullshit.
