  • This is my interpretation of the ancient lullaby found in the book of Gododdyn. This song is thought to be 1400 years old, so the Welsh language used is quite difficult to understand. It’s speaks of the young Dinogad in his speckled smock of pine marten, and how his father has just gone off hunting and whistling, taking with him 8 slaves. He calls orders to his hunting dogs, Giff and Gaff.
He hunts fish, he hunts like a killer. A mighty lion. It tells of his travels across the lands and up mountains over many days, and this section of the song gives us hints of the origin of the song. It tells of Derwynydd, or Derwent, among other places, locating this tale in North England when it still had a Welsh speaking culture. Boar, lynx and deer are not safe from him, nor any creature less it has wings to fly away. This reference also updates the date that lynx are to have gone extinct in the uk. Here’s the lyrics in Old Middle Welsh. I hope you enjoy. :)
    Pais Dinogad, fraith fraith,
    O grwyn balaod ban wraith.
    Chwid, Chwid, chwidogaeth!
    Gochanwn, gochenyn wythgaith.
Pan elai dy dad di i helia,
Llath ar ei ysgwydd, llory yn ei law,
    Ef gelwi gwn gogyhwg:
'Giff, gaff, daly, daly, dwg, dwg!'
    Ef lleddi bysg yng nghorwg
    Mal ban lladd llew llywiwg.
Pan elai dy dad di i fynydd
Dyddygai ef pen i wrch, pen gwythwch, pen hydd,
    Pen grugiar fraith o fynydd,
    Pen pysg o Rhaeadr Derwennydd.
O'r sawl yd gyrhaeddai dy dad di a'i gigwain,
    O wythwch a llewyn a llynain,
Nid angai oll ni fai oradain.

In this lullaby it mentions the lynx well the lynx was extinct by the 5th century so this is really old maybe even before the arrival of the romans

My language skills are close to zero - still struggling with Icelandic - but I would love to try singing this. If anyone would be kind enough to correct what I have scrached together from Google I would be very grateful. Saetll og blessuth! M.
    Pais Dinogad, fraith, fraith,
    o grwyn balaod ban wraith.
    Chwid! Chwid! Chwidogaith.
    Gochanwn, gochenyn - wythgaith.
    Pan elei dy dat ty e helya;
llath ar y ysgwyd llory eny law ef
    gelwi gwn gogyhwc.
Giff, gaff! Dhaly, dhaly! Dhwg, dhwg!
    Ef lledi bysc yng corwc
    mal ban llad. llew llywywg!
Pan elei dy dat ty e vynyd
dydygai, penn ywrch, penn gwythwch, pen hyd,
    penn grugyar vreith o venyd,
    penn pysc o rayadyr Derwennyd.
Or sawl yt gyrhaedei dy dat ty ae gicwein -
