I love how the Welsh people still have such a hold on their native tongue. Yes in some parts of Scotland and Ireland they still speak their native Gaelic, but nothing like Wales.
+Char Char Binks Exactly. Everyone in Wales speaks English, there is zero need for the Welsh language. Yet fluent Welsh speakers in Wales are rising to nearly 30%, growing each day. I'd say that's a pretty strong hold. Despite speaking English, still holding on to their heritage.

Fear not. Celtic languages in Britain and Ireland are being revived. Also. A recent genome study found out that the old Myth that the Anglo Saxons of England wiped put the celts was actually untrue. Anglo Saxon DNA Actually makes up less than half of English DNA and as low as 10% in some areas. So even In England, a majority of our ancestors would have spoken Celtic Brythonnic languages very similar to welsh
After living over 10 years in Wales as a Pole I started learning this language even if nearly nobody using it daily. I like to surprise my older neighbours everyday with new phrases I learn in their language and they seems to be very happy of it. Most of my english I learn I learn from older people who speak so clear. Compare to young people who speak like they keep hot noodle inside of mouth
You are not turk, you should revive the lydian language , you are giving other peoples advices but you forgot that your ancestors shifted from native Anatolian languages to greek and now Turkic, my friend

The PROBLEM in the north is the campaign to drive any, and every-body who is not fluent in the language OUT of that part of the country. Ethnic cleansing based on a language which has no known use outside Wales.
I am from Germany and came here due to my interest in such languages. Ever since I first heard this song, I thought I may have felt the absence of time. And that never changed. I am a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and his love for the Welsh language brought me here. May this language never be forgotten.
WidePeepo7 nice one... lots of us Welsh or the Irish are belonging through our blood, also years ago they wanted my gran to go to America to have tests done on her because of her being o negative and I also got the same blood, but she did not go and all flights etc would have been payed for
A lot of Welsh came over with Strongbow during the Norman invasions. They eventually assimilated into Irish culture and the popular saying 'More Irish than the Irish themselves' came to be. One of the most popular Irish surnames Walsh come from Irish for Welsh man I believe.
Iordain, you'll be pleased to know that those two great welshmen, Patrick and David, both lived in a beehive cell ( at Ffynon Santes Mair - Saint Mary's well ) in my village of Llangyfelach, just north of Swansea. They had both trained in the great teaching monastery at Llancarfan, near Barry, and eventually moved West and North, with the end result of becoming the patron saints of the countries they were evangelising.
What I am reading here in the comments is mostly from those not informed about Wales and the welsh language. Do you honestly think we welsh wanted to lose our language? Should we feel guilty or embarassed because we from the South cannot speak it? We are even ignored by those up North if we should ask for anything in english...especially during the Llangollen Festivals...yes we get knocked by both sides and if only you all realised....we did not lose our language by sheer disinterest, no it was beaten out of us. Yes, kids at school were beaten and sent home to learn the english .......and who could teach them? nobody knew then any english, and the kids not allowed back in school until they could speak what those so called teachers demanded. The fact is now...The only perfect English is spoken by the Welsh, this was the outcome from the determination of those kids who wanted education and needed to be able to communicate. This then proves that even if the language could not be spoken in schools or in public, at home they still spoke Welsh...they never lost it...but forced to not use it and in time yes it did decline. The Welsh Language is the Oldest Language in Europe...and yes, I do wish i knew more about the origins
you are right jillian, most people don't know our history or how we were treated throughout it, or the systemic racism and oppression we have dealt with for centuries... but we're still here, so hold your head up lass and be proud... cymru am byth!
Don't let anyone make you feel bad! It is not the fault of Welsh people that they were colonized. That is a kind of violence that many different peoples were subjected to throughout human history. Your relationship with the language belongs to you and you may do with it or not as you wish.
@Owen Cradoc No its not. Welsh has been proven to be the oldest venaculiar language in Europe and has its origins in archaic Hebrew and Sanskrit. Welsh was old when Latin was thriving. The reason there arent any written records is because druidic doctrine and beliefs stated that language can be misused when in written form. They weren't illiterate as the English will have people believe. It was actually the other way around. Proof of this can be found in Latin influences on Welsh (wouldn't have occured unless they could read and write)....as the first universities in Britain were said to have been in South West Wales. From as early as the 3rd century, maybe even earlier. The very first university in britain was likely on Ynys Mon! And dated back as far as the 4th century BC!!!
@@bea2985 you are correct. Basque is estimated to be 500-1000 years older than the celtic languages. And welsh itself in it's current form is a relatively young language.
My father was a Welsh man. Most of his life was away from Wales. His heart however never left wales. Listening to the Welch choirs is the most beautiful thing to listen to, the passion and sound moves me to tears. We brought the ashes of my father to his home town nant peris. For me listening to welshmen singing in Welsh is an emotional experience of joy. Thank you.

Same. I'm Lakota, and what caught my attention. Was Dacw, which pronounced (at least here). Sounds a lot like a Lakota word, which means "what is it?" I also just like the song
I'm English and believe it very, very important you keep the Welsh language alive. It's your heritage and you're right to be proud of it. Love this song. Beautifully preformed here. Well done indeed.

My family used to be massive, 14 children to each couple, all living in tiny villages in the south of Wales, working in the mines mainly. Then, my great grandparents on both sides of my family moved to England, one side to London, the other to Kent. I was born and raised in England, but I've always felt a connection to Wales as my origin, as my home. My last fully Welsh relative died two weeks ago, we are playing Land of My Father's at his funeral in two days. I know longer have my living link to my Welsh homeland, but it will always be the land of my Father's, and songs like this keep the connection strong, and keep Wales beautiful and magical in my heart 💕

The Welsh have given us the most beautiful language and music in all of human history. I hold more dearly to my Welsh heritage than to any other in my family history. Cymru am byth!
Welsh isn't just the language of Wales. It's the modern incarnation of the original language of almost all Britain. Even English are mostly of Britonic descent. That's why it resonates so much with English speakers. There's something in my blood that reacts to it. Like hearing a long forgotten lullaby, not heard since the womb.
The word Welsh comes from old english/germanic meaning foreigner. Im not a celt that speaks german, im Anglo-Saxon with a Norman last name, but all kids in Britain should be exposed to all British languages in school
@@realkingofwales3917 I was in the absolute middle of nowhere Scotland once, in a pub, and there were two older men there talking in Scottish Gaelic. (i only know because i asked) I used to spend two weeks there every summer for holidays every year for maybe 18 years and even now i drive a truck so i'm up there fairly often, never once heard anyone else speaking it. I'm not even slightly Scottish but losing something that's lasted this long is sad
I'm over 50% welsh yet I've never been taught anything about my culture and people. It was on the verge of being banned in my family.... I'm so sad about it
My dad was born here in Canada, but his father came from Llanidloes. I never got to meet him, but I feel a very strong urge to connect with the land, the language, and the music.

What a beautiful and resonant language 🏴 I'm so happy it's now revived ❤️ I'm actually in love with indigenous civilizations, including the Celtic civilization 💓
Interesting. As an Algerian, do you feel the same about the Berber languages and think that Berber languages should be spoken instead of Arabic that originated far away?
i started researching welsh culture for a character a year or two ago, and now i'm absolutely consumed by it. i've known my grandfather was welsh, but i never bothered to look that much into the culture. it's a beautiful country, and one that i've absolutely fallen in love with.

I am an American, and I too have Welsh heritage. I speak English, learned some Spanish in high school and college, am learning Welsh now, and hope to learn Gaelic, German, the rest of Spanish, and maybe Scottish, Irish, Italian, Hebrew, and Portuguese if I get around to them. Maybe Latin too since I read and write a lot.
Oh, how I understand that! Any time I look at pictures (either online or from my father's travels) or listen to the music, I feel an almost-painful pull to go there myself. It's an odd sensation that ranges in intensity from a sad longing to a sense that I am missing a piece of myself and need to somehow reconnect.
@@craigwilliams9279 If you didn't already you really ought look up the word mentioned, hiraeth, it's the feeling your describing. Welsh is nice for taking a whole sentence of emotion into a single word :)

Amazing how this old version is still the best one. This was a golden moment in time. The back vocals are perfect against the song. A beautiful song, rendered with the utmost simplicity and innocence. Not trying to show off, not trying to be extra cool. The song speaks for itself. It's simply wonderful.
I am not Welsh but I am Lithuanian, and I think it's awful that Wales lost its beautiful language same with the traditional English and Scottish. Wales is a beautiful country and has a lovely language I am glad we have this great song to remember Wales. Love from, Lithuania
English is still used! English developed over time. Wheras Cymraeg almost went exstinct becasue of an aseerted effort by the English to wipe it out of Britain. The only native language of the island that is still used on a regular basis. Look up "The treachery of the blue books" or the "Welsh not"
... you know Wales as a country and the Welsh language still exists? It's alive and well. The language has changed a little over time, but all languages change given enough time. There are still a lot of people in Wales who are first language Welsh speakers, Many speak it as a second language, and most people in Wales at least know basic Welsh. It's a minority language, but don't cast it off dead when it's being spoken more and more
I am Polish and I have the highest respect for the nation of Lithuania, that survived with it's own language and culture, despite not having a country for like 300 years or so (1586-1918).
Welsh is such a musical language, one of the best places to hear Welsh singing was at Cardiff Arms Park, during a Wales v England rugby match, it would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
I am Spanish. I can't understand a single word but I must admit that this is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I can't stop listening once and again. Beautiful song, lovely voice.

I'm Hispanic and I honestly have come to love Welsh so much. I currently know French the most fluently besides English, but along with Swedish, I really hope to become fluent in Welsh (and maybe the other Celtic languages too!). Diolch for this song. It is truly beautiful and what inspired me to start my studies.
I really like the Welsh language, I love how it sounds. I wanted to learn it but then I realised that I had to improve my English first in order to learn this beautiful language. So one day I'll do it for sure! Greetings to Wales from Mexico :)
Sorry for replying late😂 But I'm Welsh and I've learnt Spanish (had to learn for where I was living at the time). So I hope you enjoy learning our language as much I enjoyed learning yours.
ive never heard welsh spoken until now, im american but my moms side of the family is welsh, we still have family over there. anyway, it sounds beautiful, like a home i didnt know i missed
The Irish have had Political and Social backers in the US for almost a century, thats why. Wheras Wales hasn't because its hidden behind both England and Ireland. Go ask an American to name a Celtic nation, their answer will be Ireland, then ask them to name a British nation...they will look puzzled as they are only ever taught that England and Britain is the same thing. As it is in Korea, where they use the same word for England and Britain. The native British have well truly had their Culture stolen from them.
@@taffyducks544 an american friend of mine insists we have no culture…have you seen your own lmfao. also calls the language ugly and insists what the english did to us was called for. literally idiotic
Hi William. I'm Canadian of British descent and I LOVE the welsh folksongs. As long as someone keeps this beautiful music alive your lovely language will NEVER die.
Great song. I was born in Wales and when I mentioned the country of my birth to an American, he said "didn't even know Wales was a country." While I felt very humiliated, the truth is that out of 318 million people, he can't be the only American under that impression. The culture of Wales needs more exposure before it's lost altogether.
You must realize that many Americans don't understand the difference between Britain, U.K. and England. In school we are not (usually) taught the difference between the British lands. When I (as an American) were taught of Britain, I thought of England only. Unfortunately in general talk, Britain, England and the U.K. are used interchangeably here in the U.S. among us ignorant populations. I had heard of the language Welsh before but had no clue it had anything to do with Wales; in fact I used to think Welsh was an extinct language. Whenever I heard Wales growing up I thought England.
Thanks for your honest reply. After two years on Google Plus I've learnt much about not America but Americans. I was under the impression that because of America's excellent universities that generally speaking Americans would have a fairly high standard of education. When the subjects are maths and English etc the standard is high but any subjects concerning the rest of the world and unless there is an American connection then it's like America is a seperate planet that is not connected to the rest of the world. I even tried to find out why and as you said it's partly education while it's also because America's television news is all privately owned so advertising revenue comes first so news about the Kardasians will come before real hard news... All the best. nsmx1
Then I came up with what I thought was an interesting idea for a story. I have been writing what now is a book, a Young Adult Fantasy, using Welsh mythology and language as the basis for the story.
Well, while I plan on reading up on more modern history of Wales when I can, so I can get some of that in my novel, I'm more of a mythology buff than anything else. Heck, I'm a fantasy writer, after all. So of course, that's a terrible thing that happened, and I know the English were horrible to those in neighboring countries (pretty much all of them), I'm really more interested in the Ancient history more. What they all have in common.
I'm part Welsh on my mum's side (and also French on her side, and Italian on my dad's) and I love Welsh so much. Your voice is beautiful and I have this on repeat.

+Highretrogamelord You might want to take another look at Wales xD As a Welshman myself, like Joe, I say diolch yn fawr (thank you very much) to you my friend :)
diolch o galon dwin caru fy iaith xxx
The PROBLEM in the north is the campaign to drive any, and every-body who is not fluent in the language OUT of that part of the country. Ethnic cleansing based on a language which has no known use outside Wales.
In North Wales, hardly anyone speaks fluent Welsh. The main Welsh speakers live in the middle east and southern east.
I am from Germany and came here due to my interest in such languages. Ever since I first heard this song, I thought I may have felt the absence of time. And that never changed. I am a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and his love for the Welsh language brought me here. May this language never be forgotten.
Strangely, I do not understand anything at all, but I can imagine angels singing like this.
That’s because they do
Welsh used to be called the language of heaven

Great song makes me proud to be an Irishman of Welsh descent. Éire go brách, Cymru am byth.
Iordáin Breathnach I’m the opposite a welsh man with Irish blood 👍🏼
WidePeepo7 nice one... lots of us Welsh or the Irish are belonging through our blood, also years ago they wanted my gran to go to America to have tests done on her because of her being o negative and I also got the same blood, but she did not go and all flights etc would have been payed for
A lot of Welsh came over with Strongbow during the Norman invasions. They eventually assimilated into Irish culture and the popular saying 'More Irish than the Irish themselves' came to be. One of the most popular Irish surnames Walsh come from Irish for Welsh man I believe.
Oh... also.. St Patrick was Cymraig......
I think the Oldest Language in Europe is Basque Language
Thank you.

Wales is one of the most beautiful countries ever 🇺🇸 ♥ 🏴
Do you visit Wales? If not i recomend it, it is lovely there.
Learn Welsh Elouise, your connection to your roots will grow stronger and you will feel better. It's like dusting off old memories, releasing old forgoten soul. Every one of us have this coded in our long DNA strand, we just need to uncode that (and not change this by any mRNA or other DNA manipulation under any circumstances - it has to be natural way if we don't want to be cutted from our ancestry, biological and evolutional wisdom and strenght and the most important - from our soul). Learn Welsh, unwind your ancestors memories, free your soul ❤✌
So proud to be 1/2 Welsh. Cannot wait to visit the land of my ancestors one day.

Welsh should be taught in English schools. It’s the language of Britain.
The word Welsh comes from old english/germanic meaning foreigner.

All the best. nsmx1
I believe that about Wales, myself. I started learning about it when I discovered my maiden name is Welsh.
