- This is my translation and and arrangement of Dinogad's Smock.
A 6th Century lullaby from what we now call Cumbria, in an old British language very similar to modern day Welsh.
This is a loose translation from more an artistic point of view than a linguistic one.
I have read many translations of the words, but none that I felt would work as a song.
For this project it was, for me, using words that worked rhythmically and melodically, but were respectful of other translations and told my interpretation of the tale
Dinogad's smock is pied, pied
Made from a Marten't hide, hide
Whee whee whistling we call the eight in chains
When your daddy went hunting
Spear on his shoulder and bludgeon
He call take his nimble dogs. Giff, Gaff, Go, Fetch
When he killed a fish
From his coracle
It was like a lion kills a small animal
When your daddy went to the hills
He would bring back a roe, boar or a stag
A mottled mountain grouse or a fish from the Derwenydd falls
When your daddy aimed his spear
At a boar, a fox or a lynx
Nothing would escape, but those that had strong wings
