- Not everyone will agree, but I believe most folks are using the wrong reels for ice fishing.

Nick, you do great informative videos. Just getting back into ice fishing so this one gave me something to think about.
Thanks Jason! Hope you got some useful info
Spot on! Merry Christmas Nick
Merry Christmas!
Couldn’t agree more. Don’t remember the last time I bought an “ice reel”
Card to justify when the open water reels work even better!
Bigger spool size is definitely the way to go. But having bigger size reel generally increases the weight on your hand. That Daiwa Ballistic is a perfect combination of large spool and light weight. Just a little pricy. I'm not sure how the cold weather affects that MAGSEAL oil.
Weight is certainly a consideration, though I don't find 1000 sized reels to be terribly cumbersome if it's balanced properly on the rod. The Ballistics are obviously very nice, not sure on the impact on the magseal oil
To eliminate line memory for good and have zero curl,
Remove the spool filled with line and drop in a pot of hot water…and I mean hot! It will unspool straight every time…works like a charm
Thanks for the tip, Rob!
Your best tip ever. You went over this a year or two ago. I bought a 1000 finesse reel and I love it ice fishing!!! Great video Nick and have some fun this week on the ice
Thanks man! It makes a big difference
Take that push button breakdown reel handle off of the small reels to use on the bigger reels, and throw the rest of the small reel down the ice hole.
😂 That's a good idea, too!
I love the 25 plunger
They are tough cookies!
@@NickLindner I assume the 25 is a 1000. Do you know
Your logic is sound, especially when targeting overall larger fish through the ice. Not to mention with you being a little further north it’s worth the extra attention to detail with the longer ice season.
Thanks Matt. Appreciate the watch
Thanks for the tips, perhaps also find with larger reels you may prefer them on light action rods during ul and light fishing situations. Merry Christmas to your family and you!
1000 sized reels for me on my UL setups
@@NickLindner Hope the family and you have a Merry Christmas, Don’t like the 500 or 750 either!
@@davidrauschenbach6871 merry Christmas!
Hundred percent agree, excellent video and hello from Vermont!!!
I love Vermont. Gotta get back over there sometime.
@@NickLindner if you ever make it to the north east of the state try Willoughby Lake
I agree. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of worn out ice reels. 1000's & 1500's are the way to go.
I'm with ya!
Agree 100% I haven't used the small reels in years!
Right on Scott!
A proper ice fishing reel definitely makes a difference in cold temperatures. If I’m fishing in the shack, a regular reel is fine, but if I’m outside and it’s -20F I definitely start to see issues with reels that don’t have the proper low temperature lubricants. The drag and handles especially will start to bind up.
The cheap ice fishing reels that come on the $20 combo aren’t much (who would have guessed) but even going up to $40 will make a huge difference.
No doubt! Ice fishing tends to mean tough conditions. Better gear can make a big difference
The inline reels look good. I bet they'll catch on eventually.
The logic behind them is sound, but there aren't many (any?) very quality in-lines on the market.
Yup I use 1000 series reels. They work great!
Agree!
I absolutely agree with you
🔥
Size 1000 up only for me!! 👌
💪
I'm definitely gonna agree with you. Those dinky reels suck. Always freezing up when you get on fish.
100%
100% agree with the larger reels if you don't agree thats ok to each there own just fish and have fun.
100% everyone gets to have their own opinion on it!
I totally agree. I’ve been using the 1000 size for years. You save money in the long run. Ice reels suck.
Agreed!
Love my vanford 1000, 2000, 2500 for ice fishing! Will never use smaller then 1000,s reels even with smaller then 5lb line the twist is unbelievable, makes the jig do a spin in spot because the twist to!
Exactly!
The old argument about weight and balancing reel and rod just doesn't apply anymore. Have been using the 1000/2000's for walleye, since Daiwa introduced the LT line up in their reel series. I do have the 750's on my 27" Avid Med rods. The biggest difference are the handles, so much easier to fight a fish when the handle sticks out more, away from the rod. Nice video!
Very valid point. Tiny reels can be a nightmare to operate with gloves on.
Agreed 👍
Thanks for watching Marc
Love my tatula lt reels in open water but the anti reverse does not work in cold weather, do you have the same issue with ballistic reels?
I have Ballistics and Fuegos and they both have worked great for me. I actually don't have any Tatulas
Agree completely. Learned that years ago. Both ice and open water. Besides space in rod locker you gain nothing imo.
Exactly! That's the only benefit
I am a firm believer in the bigger reels.
Same!
1000% Accurate! Last thing I do when I put the boat away is poach all of my open water reels for using on my Ice Rods! Thousands of fish and zero regrets going bigger
You know it buddy!
I use 100 series reels, And I never use Fluorocarbon as a main line. In my shack I use braid. Mono is better in the outdoors with a fluorocarbon leader. But I never use Fluorocarbon as a mainline.
Totally understandable. I'll use fluoro more often than not, but you can't argue against braid inside a shack, it's great, and mono works anywhere.
I prefer a bait casting reel for ice fishing…it’s just a better reel for jigging all around…in my view
Totally get it. They are amazing in certain applications
Hard agree!!!
My unpopular opinion is using almost exclusively the shimano FX series. Instead of the more expensive ones.
Like Look at the parts list. Its the exact same parts as the sienna except one bearing being replaced by a bushing but how many casts are you doing ice fishing anyway?
That and to get a reel with more high quality part is going to cost WAAAY more but how much stress and casts are you actually putting on an ice reel? As long as its well greased and let to dry between trips that summer reel on an ice rod will outlast you!!!
Totally get it!
What about inline reels??
They have a time and place. Specific application for me.
I've been using a Shimano 500 for years. This season, I put a 1000 on my primary panfish rod. Will make a huge difference!
You'll like it more!
I like using 4000’s for 30 inch walleyes
I'm totally on board with that! Big reels for lakers, big pike and giant walleyes
note: Reason # 2. Build QUALITY. not QUAILITY
😬
One day I'll learn English!
Bigger reels feel funny on ice rods at first but then they become a part of you.
Exactly.
%100
Thanks for watching Ian
Never use ice reels take my summer reels and put them on ice rods
Heck yeah
The problem is not the 500 size Reel .... The issue is the non 500 size Fish.
I understand what you are saying, but ultimately, the 500 sized reels still have way more issues with coiling and line memory. Like I said, not everyone is going to agree with me! Haha
@@NickLindner I do agree, just joking. I use 3000s, I only have 1 2000 and a pair of 1980s 500s for nostalgia and joke purposes. .....When loading the boat tell someone You're taking fishing You need to match the rod and reel to the size fish You will be catching. While holding an 8.5 foot steelhead baitcaster hand them a 5ft noodle with a 500 reel on it 🤣
@@NickLindner Forgot to mention the 4+ foot Gar Pike I hooked on a 1 inch rattle trap last winter 🤪
Cmon nick.... I dont agree. love me a 500 president or a 20 series okuma afb but im not a hater either. I like the storage size. Get it together!!! Jk man merry Christmas
Haha Merry Christmas! The storage size argument is legitimate.
@@NickLindner not like I'm ever fighting monsters anyhow haha
@@jakedavid8187 😂
Inline is the way to go for panfish at least
It definitely has some applications
@@NickLindner I’ve also been using ice braid and a micro swivel to a fluorocarbon leader the last 3 years.
Has made a huge difference in the number of fish I catch. No trouble with jig spin.
@@jimnummerdor9687 that's a great system for sure
Buy a extra spool for ice fishing, so you swap out fast
That'll work!
