    I've gone away from short rods in the last couple of years. With roomier shanties, there's just no reason for me to handicap myself with anything shorter than 36" or so. The longer rods are especially nice for fighting some of the deeper water fish we chase in depths of 75-110 feet.
    As always, thanks for the educational video, Tom. Good luck out there on the ice.

    In my area we jig without electronics. I’ve become quite a good line watcher and this means holding the rod still. No question, a longer rod excels AFTER the fish is hooked but to detect and stick ‘em, I’d recommend around 28”, give or take 4”, at least for targeting fish under 4 pounds. My two cents.

    Thanks for the great info Tom. I’m a custom rod builder from Minocqua, WI. I’ve been trying to lean my customers into longer rods - the benefits are really clear. The main drawback I see at this point is that transport of the longer rods is not easy. Limited commercial options outside of the 2B long rod case. Most of my builds are in the 32-40” range, for all the reasons you mentioned.

    Hey man I love long rods. I use to fish the old glass noodle rods. This year I’m building a 51” carbon rod. So freaking light with a cerecoil followed by regular ice recoil guides. I’ve had one for 10 years and figured I’d build some for friends. Maybe you’d like to try one? It’s made for a 4 mm tungsten so you can still pound it and honestly you don’t lose fish if you hook them. Very fun rod. I’d use 1 or 2lb flaurocarbon and still land nice pike on it in the mix. Let me know I don’t fish with anyone else’s rods they don’t compare.
    Mine are called jrods. 🤙🏻

    Thanks for all the videos you put out,it's alot of hard work,and happy newyear. Love the actions on the rods but I just can't get past the fact you gotta tape on your reel to 100$ plus dollar rod bro,it just cheapens up the whole set up,hope to see them come up with rods with reel seats goodluck stay safe

    • @timothythompson1784
      @timothythompson1784 2 роки тому +1

      Custom rods don't have reel seats cause they add weight to the rod and weight takes away sensitivity. There is nothing wrong with taping your reel to a rod they even have tape they sale for that purpose in different color options

    I really bought it to learn more about my presentation to the fish and practice jigging and lifting thru the hit
    But it does affect my electronics I have a garmin striker vivid 5 ice not sure if I can turn down the gain but the camera does interfere with the ducer even when several feet away from the camera
    But the camera is amazing

    You could do videos of looking at contour lines and describing how you dissect new lakes. Maybe dive into how to read fish surveys. Even if they are repeat topics a lot of us could use a refresher. Even if you aren't on the ice catching fish just listening to things in this video provides awesome info. I bought my new Elliot rod for dead stick based on your video and I smashed them the other day. I watched your tip up videos on how to set them up and my buddy who has never caught anything on tip ups brought up a 28 inch northern (Not huge and wrong species we wanted but still cool to see).
    On the ice or not on the ice your videos with educational stuff like this is always wanted. Keep it up.

    Tom, How often do you change out old line on your ice fishing set ups.. I bought two new beaver dam rods you recommended to different lengths to see if I want to get into the long rod game but I found I’m farther from my ducer so getting more fish wrapped in the ducer cord easy fix but not ready to buy all new 44” rods plus expensive when the old ones work fine for now but good info for the guys want to start adding to the rod collection
    I got a mixed bag of favorite rods already hard to replace the memories of out fishing your buddy for a longer rod just my thoughts 💭

    I am one of those who actually IS interested in the fishery aspects... why is the fish population so low at 1.1 to 1.2 fish per acre? Is this due to low natural reproduction - minimal spawning habitat? Or is it a stocked fishery and the stocking rates are low? Or some other reason? Thanks.

    • @joshuat7171
      @joshuat7171 2 роки тому

      Define cheap. You want a heavy action rod and a solid reel with a good drag. The piscifun 1000 is a decent reel for 60 bucks. Another 40-60 on a rod and you got a setup for 120 bucks. If you’re looking cheaper than that, go to Walmart and get a beaver dam tip up for 40 bucks or even worse, a prepackaged rod/reel combo that is too soft for a big laker.
