  • Flintlocks are beautiful and masterful pieces of artwork and engineering. They're also incredibly finicky and need constant attention to keep them reliable. While flintlocks are obsolete for modern warfare, there was a time when they were cutting edge technology. To living historians, reenactors, and muzzle loading enthusiasts, they still are. And knowing the proper ways of maintaining and cleaning them is of the utmost importance if one has the goal of becoming as proficient with them as our ancestors were.
Today we talk about the first level of cleaning and maintaining flintlocks, what I like to call "on the run" maintenance. This maintenance can be done standing or on the move and does not require any specialized tools and helps keep the flintlock running reliably from shot to shot.
Coming soon will be two more segments about cleaning the flintlock that will be more in depth so stay tuned for those!
Sorry for the bad auto towards the end. I'm still learning how to use my new microphones.

Great job...glad you are covering this for those who are new to black powder. Especially liked that you did it in a wooded location! Take care!

When cleaning/ wiping down your lock, watch your fingers around that flint. It's super sharp and will slice you like a razor !

I have been getting into smoothbore flintlocks lately. I have a blunderbuss and am looking to add a Musket and pistol. It's been a lot of fun, and I am getting better ignition.

How do you know if your lock is designed to hold the flint flat side up or flat side down? (8:45)
