- DrumTec Pro Heads don't get much coverage in the edrum world. I recently bought a set of them and have been playing them for awhile. They have alot of pros and cons. But they are honestly incredible to play on.

I've made my own mesh heads for a while now. This material looks identical to the sun guard 90 window screen I used on some drum heads I made a some years ago. I put them on an aluminum kit I built from scratch. Your review is right on with what I remember; Great feel, but not quiet. It was frugal. A whole roll of screen was less than $15, and made about 20-30 rock solid heads, depending on size.
Do you use something to glue the layers or some center dot to make them more durable?

Very interesting that you put these into the L80s or low volume alternatives category. I'd like to see you do a comparison between Rtom black holes, aquarian super pads, and these heads.
I was also wondering if you've ever heard of anyone making diy trigger pads out of super pads or black holes. Sort of a diy take on the nfuzed pads.This idea
has been on my mind for some time now.

Many thanks Justin, great review - I've already got this Drum Tech head on my snare - spot on - the rebound is way less than any other mesh head and feel is just like the reel thing. NOTE thanks for pointing out that with a side trigger (Roland in my case) there are some dropped hits or low level hits - for me it seemed really random and thought I as going nuts for a while! - Great to know it can fixed by switching to an internal center trigger.... Or by using something like the 3 ply real feel heads (which have just arrived from Germany...) (I'm in the UK) Thanks again

Justin, the videos are informative and well done. I appreciate your work on them. I have a set of DrumTec Real Feel heads on the way. From your reviews I am understanding I need to stretch them pretty snug. Is that correct?
Nice review. Drum-tec Real Feel is amazing. I will never go back to standard Roland 2 ply.

I use them as a low volume practice kit with zildean L80. I like the feel, the only problem until now it was the snare one. It lasted 7months, but i will buy another one. The others mesh heads are fine including the bass head but you have to put the sticker to protect.

Hi Justin I bought the pro for my snare and I’m using it with a dtxtreme 111 module I installed the firmware update from Yamaha and bought a dt50s works great had to tweak the sensitivity though . I’m thinking of getting the bass drum trigger and a real feel was the bass drum head .how was the bass drum ? the snare is quite loud should I go for a different one cos the bass drum might be a bit noisy ....great channel
Drum tec pro mesh head in terms of rebound are the best so far, but are loud a lot, trigger for me works fine.

wow, big difference is sound. I like Roland heads just fine; for me, they are an acceptable trade off point. Also, most places I play, I need the pads to be quiet so they don't hear me hitting the pads over the sound volume of the speakers. Thanks for showing us the options.

I wonder if taping these would improve the tone, i saw a video of a guy doing that to a silent stroke floor tom and it made a huge difference but those seem to have more of a closed mesh than these heads do.

But how loud are the loudest heads compared to hitting the rubber of the cymbals of the ekit.
Hey Justin what does the mesh head do with your cone, because it's so rough. Will it rub the top of your cone of, damage it?

Only question I can think to ask is whether they will play well with positional sensing.
Wonder how the sound is if you put some foam or polyfil in it???
Hi Justin, I know its an older video, but maybe you read this and you can answer to my question: what about using this heads like regular drum heads? No trigger, just like the Silentstroke heads, but less rebound (at some level, noise is not an issue for me as I practice in a garage, where normal drums are loud, but with muffling its bearable). So what about the tones and snare wires? Is is garbage or not? Thanks in advance.

I wonder how these compare to the 3 ply mesh head that Roland makes for the digital snare? 🤔. I don't know why Roland hasn't been selling that mesh head in different sizes.
I have a question: I'm looking for a mesh head to use with my 22" kick in my new acoustic conversion. If not the Pro heads for use specifically with a kick drum, which heads would you recommend? Has to work well with side trigger, and not be ultra bouncy, but not necessarily super realistic either
I bought a drum rack with a bunch of extras from Drum-tec and it's been phenomenal, the shipping if you're in Europe is (or was) pretty ridiculously cheap considering weight, and besides the high minimum price order. Highly recommend them.
Edit: I usually really despise youtube channel fanboyism but Drum-tec would do themselves a favour by sending you some free stuff to review.

I actually use linen bags on my drum set because they aren't as bouncy as other mesh heads

I have these pro black heads on a small acoustic set (breakbeats) together with some Agean R cymbals(yes overpriced got them second hand) it works really well to be able to practice at home. It probably drops the volume to 40/50% so still got some tone without bouncing through the hole building. I did try other meshheads but when there is almost no tone and it bounces like a trampoline I can´t get inspired. I think these Pro blacks are more in between normal and "regular" mesh head. Let me know if someone want´s a video!

Great review. It’s kinda odd that manufacturers are heading backwards in the very direction that makes electronic drums good. Quiet practice. They are so busy trying to make Edrums so much “like” and “feel” like acoustic drums that they are starting to have all the same issues and you may as well just have an acoustic set....loud mesh heads. Metal cymbals (from jobeky etc) don’t get me wrong I love these ideas but as stated if you need to be quiet for your neighbours all these innovations are working against it.
Every drummer is looking for different things from an electronic drum. You buy an electronic drums for quietness, but other drummers buy edrums for sonic flexibility and easy recording. Just depends on the drummer.

I want a Siberian husky or Alaskan Malamute. But it's way to hot in Oz. Too much brushing. There are so many over here that people buy and get rid of them because of the maintenance A friend of mine has an organisation. That kennels abandoned huskies and malamutes and looks for new homes for them.

This is with Zildjian L80 Quiet cymbals, and I've noticed that the volumes of the heads with these cymbals matches well.

Putting a resonant head might make it quiter
Do you mean a mesh head on the bottom (resonant) side of the drum, or a true mylar resonant head? From what I have seen, a true mylar resonant head would make it considerably louder. The resonant head in this case would do what it is intended to do, resonate to the vibrations generated by the mesh head and move significantly more air in the process, resulting in more sonic disruption.
Yeah that helps, but it doesn't even come close to solving the volume issue. The snare, the high tom, and the kick all have resonant mesh heads on them in this video.

What are the worst drums you should never buy?
If it's too loud to be in an apartment and one can play full acoustic drums without bothering anyone, why not just play regular acoustic heads that sound way better anyway?
