- There's no shame in buying ready made blacksmithing tools. Buying good tongs to use while you learn to forge will make a big difference. But once you're ready you should still learn to forge your own tongs

When I first got into blacksmithing, this is the kind of video I needed. It gives you the options and let you make the choices. It tells you what's important and what can wait. Thanks John
Amen! Just bought a pair of specialty tongs from Blacksmith Depot because they were better made than what I would have cobbled together, and they exactly fit the stock I'm working with on many of my projects. I swear a lot less when my tongs hold my steel securely!
I really like Kens custom quick tongs. I got a set & made them up. A nice half way home made set of tongs... Thanks, John!
My immediate reaction/answer to that question is basically "why not both?"
John very nice and very helpful and definitely useful video. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend John. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.
I would Buy the first pair, and get the nicest pair i can find, and then try to replicate that!
Hey John, Love the channel. My first project ever after I build my forge was to make your tongs with no tongs flat bar tongs. they did not come out very well but did work well enough for me to make my next set of tongs which were better. Keep up the great work. I think without your channel I would have given up pretty much before I got started. Thanks
I'm glad to know the videos are helping out
As a beginner, 95% of the time I'm using a set of wolf-jaw tongs. I think mine are about 16"/400mm, so I'm guessing that's pretty similar to the "Tom Tongs Wolf Jaws Large" that Blacksmith Supply carries. I think the second one I picked up was a set of v-bit or bolt tongs, and then from there I started working on a set of tong blanks from Ken's Custom Iron. I love the ones I've made, but at my skill level, it's good to have a couple store-bought ones around as well 😄
John,
I am surprised that you did not mention Ken's Custom tong sets also. I made a set for my second pair and glad that I did. They came out OK and taught me alot.
I hate making tongs... only make them when I cant buy what I need. Which unfortunately here in Australia is more often than I like! Most suppliers only carry a very limited range.
Great words of wisdom John, really helpful. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Good stuff, bud. I started off with no tongs and made all the tongs I own. If I were to go back and do it again, I would absolutely have bought tongs. I was 3 years in before I used a pair of tongs I did not make. It was eye opening as to what I was doing wrong. Bite the bullet, buy tongs, and learn beginner things. When you've gained experience and knowledge, tackle the harder stuff like tongs.
Useful information for just about everyone. Thank you 👏
Glad it was helpful!
Hello John

Very usefull advise and always at the point.
Have a good week and take care

Thanks, you too!
This is the Ron Swanson of Blacksmithing
I always thought of him as Bob Ross of blacksmithing.
Hi John. Could you talk about the hammers you use, and when you choose to use each one? I seem to recall you using a double-diagonal peen hammer a lot, but I don't think it's appeared in a video lately.
Epic video. But where do I buy either Poz tong blanks or ready made Poz tongs? As you mentioned, it would be nice to have a pair to know what a great pair of Poz tongs should look like. BTW your series on Poz tongs is still king.
Seems like there was someone on Etsy a while back selling the blanks. I don't think anyone is selling ready made Poz tongs currently
Here’s my dirty secret ( & I’m no blacksmith) I grabbed up several pairs of nippers at HF, banged the jaws around as required on some and welded onto the jaws & handles on others.
These nippers cost something like $20@
I will always say that making tongs makes a far better blacksmith. There is no one tong to rule them all. Making crappy tongs teaches one to make good tongs. I have 40 some odd tongs and have made them all. Tongs may take time, but its 3-4 hours well spent.
Good morning
