Hey Jason, I have been waiting on this video. Thank you for putting all those different kinds of tongues and their uses in one video, instead of just answering a one-off question. I appreciate your knowledge
I'm mostly a wood carver, primitive furniture, charcoal pencil guy. I've just very recently turned my attention to forging, mostly because in my rural area the is simply nowhere to buy a quality chisle, gouge, scoop, sweep, and so on. I must say I rather enjoyed the video. You have just fanned the flame that is my interest in tongs. Just today 09/96/21 I made my 1st set of tongs. They came out alright, my wife was impressed (I'm trying to not read much into that) but you just showed me a couple sets, that I'm going crazy to try. For sure I'm firing the forge up after work tomorrow
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I took a class with Jim several years ago. I still talk to him once in a while. Very impressive guy. Like you he makes it look easy.
Thanks, now I have better idea of what kind of tongs I need, and why the forge of my knifes was a little hard.. thanks you Jason, greetings from Chile.
Great tongs primer man. Thanks for sharing. I dont do a lot of blacksmithing but I can see that I need to get busy making a better collection of tongs for future projects.
For years I only had a pair of 1/2 in. V bit tongs and 1/4 in. flat bit tongs. these two can hold most things. Once you have them you can also make your own tongs really easily.
Do your tongs ever take a bend in the handles? I’ve had a couple pairs start to take a bend after hammering for a couple hours, and I just hammer them back to correct shape. It’s weird because it shifts the alignment of the grasping end, for example the flat ends will not line up correctly. Great video, I think the number one obstacle I’ve faced in accurate forging is finding the correct set of tongs to have good leverage. It makes a world of difference
Softer, hotter, or thinner steel will bend more easily, as well as lower carbon steels. 3/4" rebar makes great tongs that hold shape very well, check out Liam Hoffman's 1 heat tong making vid on YT. Keep it thicker and have a cooling pail
Love watching you Jason you took part in inspiring me to start smithing! Also my four kids are all into it too I’m serious you seem like u have a huge heart too thanks brother from Pittsburgh
Keep up the great work! I truly enjoy this channel! It’s definitely one of my favorites to watch and learn from! I would love to visit your shop and possibly even do a bit of a forging session when I’m in the area next time!
Hey Jason I make my own tongs and I have a client telling me that the tongs I made for him keep bending and he keeps resetting them. I make them out of mild steel from Home Depot ½ round stock. Some of mine bend and some don't. Any advice?
I don't know what kind of mild steel Home Depot sells. They only identify it as mild steel. It could be 1018. I just don't use their steel because I don't know what it is. If that is your only source of mild steel maybe try using 3/4" stock instead. Though I can make tongs I don't specialize in them. You can find makers on YT who have more experience in making tongs.
Do you feel like making your own tongs is an essential skill for every smith to learn? Or are you better off to simply order tongs from a reputable source and focus on forging other things?
Depends on what you want to do with your time. There are several smithing techniques used in tong making universally beneficial to know; doesn't mean it's the only way to learn the techniques. I buy tongs & modify the jaws as needed.
Great info Jason! Can never have to many tongs ! Started blacksmithing making tongs so I would never run out of tongs.
I have about 60 pair of tongs. All shapes and sizes. Still need more. Lol My favorite are my wolf jaw. Thanks Jason! lots of experience talking

Great video! Straight to the point.
Watching what Jason does is genius. Listening to what he says is dangerous because you can't handle the genius

I'd say the best is to make whatever tong you need for the purpose.
So tongs are like Clamps for woodworkers. You can never have enough.
Lots of great info! But don’t be buzzed when you are recording these videos.

Did anyone else get a little distracted by the constant power tool in the background? Is that a sander? Anyhow, Jason is the master!
Well damn I bought the wrong tongs. Oh well I get to buy more stuff now I guess.
That's the spirit, I'm buying something I'm your honor
