    Concord may go down in history as one of the biggest gaming flops of all time. The Concord play your account was less than 600 on Steam Charts less than a week after launch. Console sales weren't much better and Sony pulled the game from its stores. Sony also refunded anybody who purchased the game. I've never seen this happen before. Even cyberpunk 2077 got better support than this. So today I want to talk about why this game failed in terms of marketing, Market saturation, it's gameplay, and unfortunately it's politics as well.

    The big reason for failure is, why would I buy a hero shooter for $40 when overwatch 2 exist which is free and a superior game. Also valorant is on gamepass,, apex legends is also free.

    I think the gaming industry has a huge issue that suits are essentially making the games. Using numbers and algorithms to make games instead of letting the artists just make the games.

      I think it is too late for that. They already pulled the plug, refunded everybody and cancelled the whole project. It is somewhat unique in that it is a far worse faillure than almost any other title in the history of gaming.
      I believe financially, possible only New World could be a more massive faillure, but I have no insight in their financials. Amazon has a trackrecord of overspending on nearly everything, as we know from Rings of Power's insane budget, but they might have made a decent amount by being extremely ambitious with their MMORPG, as well as having the most insane marketing budget for that title. It seems to have died out long ago though, judging from the gaming channels that offer up to date info.

    A big factor is that the average gamer really only has enough time to put serious hours into one, maybe two live service games, and after so many years of so many live service games coming out, basically everyone has had time to find one if they wanted to. The number of gamers open to finding a new live service game at any given time now is pretty low, so to penetrate the market, it needs to be either a uniquely exciting IP or a fresh new genre breaking title.
    How many people were really going to leave whatever live service game they’ve put years into for Concord when it’s 90% the same stuff already available? Traditional video games are like shirts. Even if you own a ton, you can always get another new one if it looks good enough. Live service games are like phones. Most people only need one, and unless there’s a compelling reason to replace it, you probably won’t switch it out.
    Concord didn’t seem to do a ton wrong, but it offered very little reason to pick it as a game to sink hundreds of hours into over the rest of the games on the market. Being a mediocre game in the live service market is worse news than being an awful game in the single player market.

    You may as well be talking to a brick wall JT. If they are so delusional that they believe the political atmosphere on twitter is an accurate representation of reality and that spending nothing on marketing out of the $100 million total budget to make a game that only appeals to about 4% of the population (but only about 5% of that 4% will actually play) is a good idea and sound business strategy…..then you can’t tell these people nothing. I believe the people making it knew it would flop (why they spent 8 years trying to fix it) but they knew they could milk 8 years employment, and tens of millions of dollars in salary from the people bankrolling it and they didn’t care if it was successful as long as it pushed their agenda and paid their salary.

    I don’t think quality and being different even matters anymore. People just want to play these fps shooters that have been playing for years. There are TONS of people who play only CoD or only CS. More, and more people who play some single-player games + 1-2 live service ones. And it’s getting harder and harder to change their habits and make them play something new. Especially because games = friends. And making friends try something new is even harder ;)

    • @NinjaPieceLOL
      @NinjaPieceLOL 9 днів тому +1

      Agreed. If you're going to release a new game in this crowded live-service genre, you need something to hook people in. You need to be an established developer with a reputation or have a popular license. Riot is an established dev, so they were able to get people to try out Valorant. Marvel Rivals has a popular license, it should do fairly well. There is a My Hero battle royale that is doing well enough to keep receiving support.
      Not everything can be a lightning in a bottle like Apex.

However, currently there is no meaningful or even personally rewarding progression (Weapon Mastery takes a "trillion" levels and your Player Level only increases once in a blue moon), this still leaves playing just fun... Unfortunately, due to Disbanding Lobbies, you basically spend more time in Matchmaking than playing, on top of that they've only added TWO 6v6 maps since the game launched!

  • @pinobluevogel6458

    Can I just start by saying this is a massive understatement video. Should I applaud you for sticking up for a game that is clearly flawed in nearly every way, trying to see the positive? I think the criticism is just way too light for how misguided the devs for this game have been.
    Like many, the first time I actually heard about this game was through extreme negativity around the character models. And to be fair, when I saw them, I thought they were a joke. Leaving aside all the diversity issues that people associate with them, they aren't just characters you would want to play. I was already critical of some of the Overwatch character models, but at least most of them were fun and original. They at the very least had some sense of style and craft to them.
    The concord characters however, are a disaster. I have honestly looked at each and everyone of them and there isn't a single one that spoke to me, or that I would want to play. Now if the gameplay or level design would be amazing, that could save it a little, but even there the levels look boring, the weapons are bog standard and the gamemodes are all carbon copies of other, far better and more succesful titles. What reason does a new player have to even try this game, let alone keep playing it? Really, there is nothing here.
    For modern gamedesigners, instead of trying to do a copy of a gametype in an oversaturated market, that can barely sustain what is now there, they should maybe start by coming up with something original. Instead of starting with a live service model, they should begin by designing something that people would want to play. Take a look at Forever Winter or Black Myth Wukong. Those are some bonkers ideas, but they draw in a crowd .. and people love it.

    I think part of the problem is that when it seems like the most thought-out or unique thing is the "wokeness," then people are going to fixate on that. I, for one, want diversity in games, but even I understand why it irked the anti-woke and I agree to an extent. It feels like that was their only "selling point" while not offering anything else interesting. It feels like it took too long to develop, too many similar games came out, and they pulled a Bud Light and thought "crap, how can we appeal to a different audience?" and went "woke". This ultimately could have been avoided with better market and character design

    [Edit] 10:39 Yeah that's how I heard about it too. A big red flag for any piece of media, not just games is when something like that is up front be it "woke" or not, It usually means that the substance of the thing in question is bad. Same goes for when a game is showing you a lot of graphic fidelity or "in game cutscenes" and fails to show any gameplay that's significant. Sometimes not entirely for that reason but there's a lot of sentiment around that viewpoint that's been proven time and time again. So goes the adage one time is a mistake, two times is a coincidence, three times enemy action.

With every live service game that comes out it gets more and more difficult to convince people that their time is best spent playing it. It's not a bad lesson or at least "worthy of note" point to acknowledge, though, that if you're an upstart brand especially, you probably can't afford to be woke fresh out of the gates. I mean be real and look around you. There are _legacy_ companies with brand cache and power millions of times greater than your little game studio that are _also_ struggling to embrace this ideology. Look at Disney and their box office sales anytime a movie you know from the trailers is pandering to a minority of people. Look at The Acolyte. Episode 3 into the series and they had to toss out the show because they can't get off the train BEFORE it leaves the station. Driftor's right to point out and it's interesting to think about because this is *also* true for me, that for a lot of people, if you're going to OPEN with the bullshit, it could very well be their first impression of your product.

      Cyberpunk is incomparable to this. Even on launch it was extremely fun to play (on PC), it had a great storyline, beautiful and extremely modern graphics, excellent music and an amazing world design that is almost unrivaled in gaming still to this day.
      I know it was buggy, but the game has since been updated in every way. Pretty much, if you weren't trying to play Cyberpunk 2077 on an old PS4, it was never that bad. But now, especially on modern systems, the game is still a marvel and I have yet to see a more visually impressive title to this day.

Apart from the fact that some don't want to make another account, I also heart that in 120 countries you can't even make/use a PlayStation account for PC, and those are also all potential players missing for that stupid reason. Not that this alone would have saved Concord, but with other issues it adds up. Btw I don't see the 80s to 90s Sci-Fi aesthetics in those mostly ugly characters.

    My idealized interpretation in terms of a contributing factor to the situation is, given the limitation of releasing the game on PS5 and PC, it would be even more important for it to follow the live-service model with battle passes, premium shop + currencies, the whole shebang. As it was an entirely new IP, maybe it was difficult for many to welcome yet another game wanting to hog our attention. I have not seen a single flesh vessel talk about it, but I think many subconsciously have that thought with modern multiplayer-focused games these days, i.e "how expensive is this game _really_ ?".
    And I agree as well, I feel the supposed wokeness (gosh, what an abhorrent word) most certainly wasn't a cause to the game's reception.
    There must be so much going on behind the scenes surrounding the game and its developers that what we know probably does not even come close to the full story. Whether we ever really learn about it fully remains to be seen.
    Lastly, I find the recurring comments about the developer insulting those on twitter a very fascinating case. This wasn't exactly a lead designer or director of the game, but an animator, and a former one at that. Does their word really hold that much weight in the eyes of the potential players? With that said, didn't a number of developers from the Helldivers team also throw around "skill issue" at their players regarding meta's being patched out of the game?
    Ah whatever, none of it matters anymore. Bloody excellent video as always mate! Looking forward to the manga review!

    • @pinobluevogel6458
      @pinobluevogel6458 9 днів тому +1

      I disagree with both of you. On one end this game was indeed very bad. At best it was bland and uninteresing and came out 10 years too late, at worst it was a very poorly designed piece of garbage with an overused and outdated political agenda that put some more oil on the fire of it's faillure. There are no redeeming qualities to this game.
      That said, I also disagree that unsubscribing from a channel that offers mostly honest content and a great talking head that narrates well is just a little sad. I'm not convinced Driftor is remotely interested in 'trying to avoid negative press' in this situation. He is actually taking a lot of unneccessary flak for sticking up for this bad game.
      And if it is his honest opinion, which I believe it is, that is perfectly fine with me, we don't have to agree on everything. I actually prefer my channels to offer different insights, or at least make me think for myself. You unsub from a channel because you think the content is bad and you no longer want to be updated or participating with it, not because you disagree over one stupid game that isn't worth anymore of our time.

    Yeah woke doesn’t affect a game unless it’s front page not hiding it.
    Valorant, LOL, Overwatch all have some sort of LGBTQ in their roster of characters. But still very popular games. Because all the woke stuff they add for points is subtle and irrelevant.

    • @pinobluevogel6458
      @pinobluevogel6458 9 днів тому +1

      The main difference is that all those games feature characters that look cool. Their art style is good, sometimes even impressive. I'm not a huge fan of focusing massively on the LGBTQ side of things, but if done correctly, you could create a really diverse set of characters that are all worth playing.
      I think I'm more understating what you posted than offering something new, but I felt the quality of the art and sense of style and flashyness is a major difference between Concord and those titles mentioned. In my opinion a popular character always fits somewhere in these 4 catagories, or a combination of them:
      1. The male powerfantasy. These are the muscular types with big swords or guns, or in fantasy the big burly orcs or minotaurs, or bulky combat robots in science fiction
      2. The female powerfantasy. These are the stylized, beautiful women. Often themed as a warrior-woman, but they can be from any type, as long as they are pleasing or cute to look at.
      3. The cute/furry style fantasy. These are your cute little cats, your pookie bears, fluffy fantasy creatures or baby dragons.
      4. The odd-balls / humor fantasy. These are your unique, but still well designed characters, offering something unique and/or something funny. Good examples are Fiddlesticks or Amumu from LoL.
      Despite some of these tropes being present in Concord, they are not designed well. I haven't played League of legends or Overwatch in ages, but I still think most of the characters on their roster look interesting and cool. I would 'want' to play with them. Most people take ages designing a character in an MMORPG for good reason.
