@@pelipper-swagwhy are you looking for realism in a video game and it’s clear you haven’t even payed attention to the video he said she has bullet proof skin so armor doesn’t matter.
Not gonna lie, I think Captain Amari looks too sexed up, you could've still maintained the heavily armoured aesthetic, and not made her look like a stripper cop.
As a degenerate weeb, i still feel the Amari design is a bit off from her concept. Women in full clad armor can still be hot. And bulky armor to shield her teammates as well makes sense. I'd love to see an alternative take on Amari in full armor because i love your other two redesigns.
i agree with this, while the old design might be bad, the idea of the hefty armor of female character was kinda intreresting. Also i think Bazz redisign could have incorporate mor androgynous vibe but still looks great.
I like the redesigns but it just feels like the sex appeal was pretty forced for Amari. If you gave her a little more armor in her center area or so while retaining the curviness of your redesign, it'd make for a better design. Just my opinion.
Not to shittalk sexy characters, but a tank wearing leggings and being exposed from neck to bellybutton is kinda too much of a bikini armor type of vibe for me
yeah I was thinking the same thing like theres no way you should have your chest open like that as a tank? The bulky armor of the original one was a bit too much but this new one has nowhere near enough armor
I think you missed the part of the video where he said her skin would be bullet proof. So having the open shirt is no big deal in context. Think - Luke Cage.
Aesthetically pleasing, but not logically. Too many gaudy cutouts that scream “look my design is the opposite of the original”. There is a difference between good design (the concorde has a clearly terrible design originally) and design fanservice, in this regard, the design of the conditional tracer will be a great example between fanservice and design.
Fits perfectly in a Frazetta-inspired sci-fi shooter, which is probably what the original devs were going for but screwed up massively. Mr. D is actually the worst design on here, he doesn't mesh well with the other two
Its so dumb how he thinks he can make a better design than Concord (wich isnt that hard) and then he falls into the sexualisation trap. Like... i caNt mAkE a cHareCter inTrestiNG bEsides bOObs. Like... for the tank, tweak the suit a little, change the helmet (face covered), get rid of the little flag and make the weapon look like she ripped it of a satelite. Boom, the spacesuit fantasy that the original design tried to convey is enhanced. Edit: change the color of the suit to white.
3:50 while i like this design, given shes a tank i feel she should have like some sort of armor on to show shes a tank, maybe make the metal arms bulkier, like more muscley or something.
I don't mind characters that aren't the beauty standards of society, but I do mind if they just have horrible design overall. tbh, most of the body types and faces don't matter, it's 99% the outfits and clothes they wear.
Body type and face definitely do matter, but they don't need to all be generic babes 101 with the same pinup model proportions like this. Still these designs are infinitely better regardless. But they could use a lot of improvement.

The only design I have a problem with is Emari. Mostly because Concord's design feels like she's wearing something like juggernaut armor, which gives her a tanky feel. Honestly, Concord did the armor dirty because it looks like WH40k space marine armor from Wish that was made strictly from memory 💀
agreed lol, i feel that her previous body type did resonate with her role as a tank, but the armor was NOT doing it. it *is* possible to keep the juggernaut look while still highlighting femininity, especially because if anyone got shot in the torso with that outfit they'd be dead on the spot.
amari is actually a one character who’s redesign i don’t like, it makes perfect sense for her to wear this space marine suit as she’s a full on slow tank, what i have problem is her color it’s just so bland and boring and shape of her suit is also boring as hell, i love the color pops you added on redesign and all the little details to make her stand out but it just makes more sense for her to be full covered
Amari being bulky isn't so bad but the color scheme is god-awful, it's so dingy with the mint green and olive green. The rounded pads make her look less aggressive. Then she has these silly red flags sticking out and bright magenta stickers with her blue lipstick, it looks juvenile. It gives the overall impression she plays space football or something, not a space marine. She looks like the special ed version of the DOOM Slayer, it's ridiculous.
@@hatemongerofthetoxicbrood6561 Nah, Zarya works as a tank in Overwatch. Just make sure she has the blonde ponytail skin. But Concord designed a female tank in the ugliest, dumbest way possible. Women wouldn't even want to play her because she looks so embarrassing.

Agree. I think the Baz(?) redesign would benefit from just the addition of skinny jeans tucked into hightops? Or give her some future boots for faster speed? hes not an artist, pay close attention and you realize everything is AI. the minigun makes no sense, the jacket from mr dee also is completely illogical, why does it have like 5 pockets. and the helmet on the capitan character is completely different in two different pics side by side, look at it
I think you made a mistake with Amari. I think she would look better with a build more similar to Illoai from League of Legends to give her the impression that she's physically robust and powerful. I think your design is okay, but the open chest doesn't really scream "tank".
I can see what you mean, but I would say look up tall African women. The visual style of the game is photorealism and a character in that shape (especially female) wouldn't translate. To be that big at that height is an unfathomable amount of muscle.
@@criticalart_64 I mean, you're already making her a 7ft tall super soldier with bullet proof skin. Is it that strange to give her a more robust build and more armor to better visually convey that she's a tank?
@@criticalart_64 Fair. If your redesign makes everyone more sleek, I can see that. Like I said, I don't dislike the change. It's better than it was, but I just wanted to share my thoughts and offer constructive criticism. It's still so much better than what it was!
Yeah, personally I would've leaned more towards something like glory's redesign by Joe Keaton and Ross Campbell, but I still think it's much improved. I especially like the red lipstick and new helmet criticalart gave her.
I like C. Amari design, but I would remove that neckline, since she is a tank and a Capitan it makes sense for her to have her body covered with amor instead of being half naked xD. I also wish she was a little more intimidating cuz she is supposed to be an imposing super soldier. Mr D deign is genius tho.
I get it, I kindof went in more of a "Heavy Metal" / 80's exploitation film design for the memes. I had one design of her as a petite girl in a mech suit, another version where she is more like Cyborg from the justice league with cool cybernetic dreads and full body armor, I went with this one because it was more classically ridiculous and closer to the color scheme of the original. My boy Mr. D is bringing back the moon boots puffs on space hookah and smuggles aliens and contraband in a highly tricked out freight ship.
I get where you’re coming from. I like strong armored women as much as the next guy. But if I saw a 7 foot, roided up bikini babe tanking gunshots on her bare chest, I’d honestly be way more intimidated. Either direction is valid though
That's a really good observation. The designs in concord do not say very much about who they are as characters. I think it is because a committee came up with the designs so they are all a hodgepodge of stuff with no cohesion ( also no one had the courage or stomach to say "no that would be lame").
@@criticalart_64 I think they have checkbox of list when making character hence all the bad design made.. which ironically didn't include these 2 checklist, "being attractive" and "not cringe".
While I completely agree that the original designs are ass, your designs fall a little too far into the "characters must be sexy to be visually appealing" trap. Amari being a prime example. I feel like something closer to Brigitte from Overwatch fits her thematic a bit better with the super bulky armor that still has an appealing silhouette without being hyper sexualized / super feminine
I just can't take these redesigns characters seriously. The second one looks like she came straight out of one of those low-budget porn game on Steam. Sure, the originals were awful, but these are bad in an entirely different way.
what's real crazy is i was excited to see what concepts he could bring to the table that would've improved these characters. Only for him to think with his dick on the first two and essentially just give the guy liposuction on the last one. Oh and also that trans comment deducted some points for me.
You literally just took bad designs and turned them into the male gaze. Their styles, outfits and colours are bad. Not their body shapes and features. I'm going to redesign these characters myself and make a video.
Please do. I said the same thing. He just made them into conventionally attractive characters with boobs. He didn't fix the colors or the design elements that are actually objectively bad. I'm far from woke but the word transvestite is so dated and sounds so gross. This could've been a great idea but he just didn't execute it well at all.
Your redesigns are so much better but it is kind of a shame you took female characters who weren't weirdly half naked and suddenly they have super revealing outfits? It would have been more interesting if you worked within that original concept for something more original
Everyone: Concord's designes are terrible. The artstyle is fundamentally off, the material of their clothing not retaining its real life counterpart's properties giving it a uncanny effect. All of the characters dont have identiying traits to signify their abilities, roles or personalities. Him: Concord's designes are terrible. I can't cum to this, I can't cum to any of this!

I feel like the second design is a bit too blatant. As a straight guy of course I like seeing scantily clad beautiful women, but if it's supposed to be a tank they definitely need proper heavy armor, or at least some coverage. @@chiffoncakeandtea many seem to be missing the humour of this video. Concord is meant to be a retro hero shooter, instead it's a sloppy depiction of modern negative stereotypes. In this video, the creator instead redesigns the characters embracing RETRO stereotypes. Friggin give her an innerboob area? You talk about adding unnecessary crap with dee, but then you sexualise the living hell out of the other 2 characters
They're all unrealistic anyway. And I believe he was just aiming to make it more appealing, which it is. Also, sexiness used to go hand and hand with strength and still does in asian games.

I don't think your rendition of Captain Amari should've been unnecessarily sexualized. With a breastplate to complete her armor (preferably in a diamond shape to add to the sharp look of the power armor), she still would've looked sexy. With a naked chest, she just looks weirdly exposed.
The Bazz redesign is so great that crashing into this awful "Emari" redesign hurts so much more. To make such a huge point about the original Bazz design's shoes not being appropriate for running, and then giving "Emari" high heels!? Unbelievable. This redesign is simply not the same character, shares no DNA, and the stupid tight butt, exposed chest and high heels belong in something like Girl Fighter, not in any professional project.
Yeah, she still looks goofy with the armored arms and legs but exposed chest and abdomen. She'd look much better with a green armor on the rest of the body, kind of like a woman RoboCop.
Look, these designs _are_ better across the board, but I disagree with the focus of injecting sex appeal. I'm not against it inherently, there's plenty of space for that when making new characters, but when skimpy clothes do not fit the description for a particular character, it is still a design flaw to shoehorn it in.
You know nothing of the Era it's trying to Evoke then. Especially Black/Latin Club Culture during the era. I am not from that era but my mom was and That style is basically 1-1. The Devs claimed that their "Theme" they were trying to hit was 70's-80's fashion and sci-fi.. But they completely missed that mark by decades. His Redesigns fit way closer to the era it's supposed to be themed on while also sticking to the culture the Characters are Also themed on. Although I do agree they Kind of don't fit in a Space half of the Setting but fully fit if the game only took place Planetside with no space elements. The 70-80's sexual openness and trends was a big part of that era.
The original designs are what you get from listening to the opinions of insiders for decades on end. He isn't trying to appeal to the people who know the "rules", he's trying to appeal to the people with disposable income. The rules you're spreading are just the opinionated sensibilities of a select group of people with specific tastes. It's just a list of demands an artist has to obey to be approved of by the ones in charge. How many times must the rules be broken and entirely new styles of art established before people just let go of that nonsense?

I honestly thought that second design was satire at first. He was making fun of basketball shoes for being impractical and then he put her in HEELS. She doesn't even visually read as a tank to me anymore, more like a DPS main. The silhouettes and costumes definitely needed work, and honestly haveing one or two character be conventionaly attractive would be nice, but this just feels like the crazy Twitter artist that 'fix' art by making everyone fat and a poc but in the opposite direction. The only character he didn't hyper sexualize was the male character and by that point I wish he had done so to at least balance out the aesthetics, but instead he... changed the race of the character to insert representation?!? Like I was pretty sure that character was Asian/Polynesian(although maybe he's intentionally racially ambiguous), it feels pretty ironic actually.
if the character description does not fit skimpy clothes the description is wrong and should be changed. This is a product aiming for large mass audience, see for example The Last Descendent game, all the women are babes in skimpy armor and it's making millions per day with 100k+ constant players online
First design looks amazing. 11/10. Second one, I don't like the idea of only armoring the parts that don't have internal organs. She absolutely needs to cover the center of mass if she's a slow tank. Finally, the last one looks alright, I would've liked a little more personality on his chest. Like a t-shirt or stickers on the harness or something. Excellent video, the roasts of the originals had me dying 😂
am i the only one that thinks the first two have the right idea but wrong execution😭? the first was passable (as far as sexualization) but the second one really took a swan dive
You are not the only one. This guy kind of shows how we ended up with the problem we have today--the male character design looks like he's going to enter a fight, the females look like they're entering a strip club. Videogames went from overly sexual designs, to the most unsexy characters ever, back to overly sexual again. Try to make the women look good while also making them look like real, competent soldiers. Unless she's a stripper or something (take Moxxi from Borderlands, for example), she wouldn't be walking around in only her bra.
Yeah I agree these redesigns rely very heavily on just altering the characters to be more physically appealing rather than creating new designs that work with their body types and backgrounds. You can still make visually appealing characters who don’t fit into classic beauty standards, it just requires a bit more thought than just making them skinny and sexy.
@@5371W Don't think the first one's a great example, I'd consider Ghost in the Shell retro. Other one's more debatable. But I respect it for the sheer audacity. Didn't think anyone could get that jacket to make sense lol
I don't think the right approach for thoses characters was to sexualise them. Concord doesn't have good design i'll be firm on that but to fix a characterdesign by making it the sexiest possible really isn't fixing it. And quite frankly not very good design choice. Impractical clothings for fighting and no sense of personality. Something we have seen time and time again. Sexiness can be done with a purpose but if its only for eye candy it doesnt really stand strong. What does it say about the characters? You obviously have skills but not the best approach to charadesign
I think the same thing as you! I don't like these designs either because they don't tell me anything about the character. Maybe if they weren't standing in such a static pose I could see what they where going for
100% Agree. Mr. Dee is his best redesign for this reason. I still can't tell the character's gameplay role just from a still image, but I know he's got style at least. You can tell he's a goofy mfer from what he wears. Can't say the same for the outfits he gave the girls. Not to say cleavage and whatnot can't show characterization, just not in a static t-pose. Maybe a more dynamic pose showing off the cleavage would be better. Here I can even make it woke. The character is trans and showing off them thousand dollar implants, welcoming the haters confidently. The kind of arrogant confidence fit for a fast dps role. It's at least something compared to Shoulders McGee from the original design.
ye and it's not even close.i didn't even fully realize just how bad the original designs are before this video. oh, that's right... "were", "how bad the original designs WERE"
The original designs suck, that's very much true, but yours feel like the rule 34 parody. Your criticism are let down by the solution to everything being "they should be hotter and less clothed"
I mean, I like the first one. The other two are completly different characters. Brigitte is a fully armored woman, and Roadhog is a comically fat man, and that doesn't harm their designs at all. The issue with Concord design is that the characters are plane and boring. I'm not even convinced that Mr.Dee is less boring than Daw. It still looks as if was made with a character creator from an action RPG. Captain Amari, even if deviates quite a bit from the original concept, and has the major disadvantage of having the most visible and easy to aim part of her body exposed, despite the fact that is a tank, at least looks like its own thing. Like a Judge Dredd Character, but it has a defined identity.
The most absurd thing to me is that the dude starts the video by talking about how impractical the first character's shoes are, and then delivers us a tank with no armour covering her vital organs. That's definitely very practical armour, right? Medieval knights were well known to wear open-faced helmets, greaves, gauntlets, and absolutely nothing on their chest and back to protect like... Their organs and stuff. lol Let's get real, the dude's design philosophy is "make them hotter."

In Nier Automata you can have a character displaying her ass all the time, in Super Mario Bros you can't, it's just not the tone of the game.

Im gonna be completely honest as a game developer and character design artist, these redesigns does not make sense. I hope you don't mind some constructive criticism, but you are not portraying these characters as their respective roles in-game. Emari is the worst in this front. A tank character, especially in a fast paced hero shooter game, should be bulky and big. The player has to be able to recognise the character and know what role and abilities they have in a split second while in game, and a lean "sexy" build does not contribue to this and will often only confuse players in the heat of the moment. I feel like you tried to fix this issue by making her taller, but unfortunately it doesn't work and instead feels lazy, as the rest of her character design feels a bit flawed. There is nothing in her design that portrays her personality or her backstory. Why would a soldier even wear high heels? Why does she have no armor? Look, the character design in concord is horrible and feels extremely empty, but I would argue that your redesigns are just at the other side of the spectrum from "woke" to "Traditional" without actually improving the characters. Sexualizing female characters is not automatically good character design, and often just ends up feeling very cheap. There are of course circumstances where sexualising characters work, but it doesn't really make sense in this context for this game. I would suggest looking into games such as overwatch or even valorant (circumstational), as they are very good at incorporating the characters respective roles into their visual designs. This comment is not meant as hate, but criticism from another artist.
1° being a game dev doesn't make your opinion worth of any value, if game devs were on point with their choices concord would have been a success, this is what gamers want you know what they say "the customer is always right" unless you want the game to be a flop. 2° bro is trying to give realism to a character in a science fiction setting 💀

@@Xahnel The thing is he is doing it freely where you have to imagine you are working under one of those DEI company and they keep asking you to change the design even though you don't personally like their idea. In the end, I just gave them warning about how it will look and just had to gave them what they asked.
Excellent video, the roasts of the originals had me dying 😂

not the only one
Def not the only one, the first one was okay but I really didn’t like the openness of the second one
No, boobs are cool 😎
I dunno about your Captain Amari concept, looks like a mobile suit pilot if she was a pinup in a 1980s Heavy Metal mag.

Maybe if they weren't standing in such a static pose I could see what they where going for
Yep.
100% Agree.

Concord does not have good des8gn because it is intended to desexualize them. Go cope and seethe in your own corner.

The point about Captain Amari is null and void because of games like The First Descendant and Stellar Blade.
It's not stupid, it's a design that brings players to the game. Evidence of it working is The First Descendant and Stellar Blade.
@@detective2221 It's extremely stupid if you start the video by critiquing the appropriateness of the first character's shoes.
Yes!!! My exact thoughts.
1° being a game dev doesn't make your opinion worth of any value, if game devs were on point with their choices concord would have been a success, this is what gamers want you know what they say "the customer is always right" unless you want the game to be a flop.

@@ToddLawrence23 He could be a zookeeper and what he said still holds value because of the content of the message. Oversexualization is bad not because "muh woke" but because if used improperly is lazy. Some characters use sex appeal marvelously like Starfire, Catwoman and Bayonetta. It would be ridiculous however to see let's say Ironheart in an armored bikini.
Even in fiction, there's realism to be had so the setting makes sense, Halo is as sci-fi as it gets and people would groan if suddenly Chief started creating clones of himself to fight as if he was Sun Wukong.
