- The S13 is obviously the most used chassis in drifting across the entire world. It is getting really hard to find OEM and even some aftermarket parts for them. Popularity has been a double ended sword, more parts being made, but less cars to put them on. I believe this is sort of the last hoorah of being able to build one of these cars even if you're frugal and have the means. Soon youll be spending a lot of time and even more money tracking these things down.
My wife recently wanted to build one as a street car, which should be a bit easier than a drift car, but itll take some time to source all the parts and it will be a running project for awhile! hahaha

Imagine if cash for clunkers never happened. There'd probably be a lot more 80-90s cars still around for parts and whatever
I graduated high school in 2002 and had 2 ae86 that I bought for 1000 together and killed them both in the winter 2003 then I got my 1st 240sx sohc it think it was a 1990. Then kill that trying to drift the mountain passes of salt lake county, Utah. It had tein coil overs and welded diff. I got that car for 800 bucks. Alot of us young drivers also just didn't know that the cool jdm cars would disappear from us not respecting what we had.
I don’t even want to think how many cool cars suffered through cash for clunkers or the scrap scheme we had here in the UK around the same time 🥲
It’s happened all over the world, only some countries have started to pick up on it but it does suck.. the amount of Jdm cars I’ve seen wrecked is shit
I only got interested in cars maybe 5/6 years ago I really regret not getting into cars when I was younger and in high school back in the 00s
Back in the ‘90 my dad as to make a choice : a brand new e36 323i or a brand new S13 with the CA18DET
He witnessed rust holes in a 1 year old S13 so…

This reminds me of my younger days buying clapped out 90's cars and trying to resurrect them with nothing but a shoestring and a dream. Good times and tons of lessons learned. Decent S-chassis haven't really been affordable or available here in Canada for many years so I'm stoked to see one with a ton of potential in good hands.

i have a s13 coupe sitting in the driveway. been there for like 3 years. Got it, fixed the rust, got SLIGHTLY rear ended, and its been sitting because building these things are MONEYYY
I wonder if anyone will want to restore these in the future the same way they do old muscle cars

Yeah there's literally an oem+ resto thread on zilvia. there's a lot of guys that own them and keep them stock.
Even all the bare, smashed up, drift shells will probably be restored at some point. I told Aaron Losey he's sitting on a retirement gold mine of chassis'ssss. He thinks it's all scrap, and technically, they are.. but when did that stop anybody 😂
I’m starting my job next week at a hot rod/auto body shop and old jdm cars becoming more rare is the exact reason I want to learn.
@Chelsea DeNofa exactly. Thankfully builds are becoming much higher quality now that the drift missile craze is over so now the remaining ones skyrocketed in price so ppl will hopefully treat them better

I’m here for it. Looks like a pretty good 240. Most of them are busted to hell and back and/or total rust buckets. If you guys do ever paint or wrap it - I’d love to see it back in misty blue. The platinum blue is sick too.

240's have suffered from the "drift tax" for so long. In my area it is damn near impossible to find any decent ones for a reasonable price and if you want a stock one you will be paying a premium. This happens all the time - e36 bmw's are now suffering from this as well where I am at as are early 2000's vette's, miata's, foxbody mustangs, anything JDM. There is also what I call the youtube tax on certain cars (usually happens when a multi-million sub channel comes out with a video being like -""these are the last cheap, best (insert car) of this out there" then you will see an extremly quick price spike.)

At this point building any of the cars we enjoy. S chassis, e chassis etc. It is going to be expensive. Today's builds are nothing like what we were building in 2003 and the cars cost 5x to 10x the cost. Regardless good luck with the build.
First car back in 2013 was an S14 Zenki all stock with a clutch welded diff and coils for $1700. I went on to own 4 more S13's all running and driving and didn't pay a dime over $2200 for any of them. Wish I stashed one away so I could've built it over time but I had other priorities. I love these cars but they're pieces of shit and the market has been way out of hand for so long now.
I WANT THIS CAR! It's only a little molested and has a heart of gold! That's just my type. One weekend I would have her cleaned up and feeling good about herself. Three months later she will be out of my league but hopefully still love me!

Also it’s not 100% but more than likely that’s a Black top SR. It’s got the vertical casting marks on the front of the head just below the valve cover. That’s a late model SR thing. It’s not for sure because there was some cross over but more than likely it’s a blacktop

That differential most likely came from a HICAS s13. They came with both ABS and high capacity cover.
A ecoboost in the hatch when your done getting the parts would be pretty cool I love how your mustang sounds with it and ruby with bright red flake would be neat too

As far as i know, the 3x2 bolt drive shaft flange is pretty normal for an s13, at least in germany. But no, its not a german diff, because the german s13 recived a diff coller from nissan. The subframe is also s13, because the s13 subframe is the only one, which has 4 rear bolting points for the diff. As far as i know S14/15, r32/33/34, z32/33/34 just have 2 bolting points at the rear.
I also got stock rolled fenders isn’t unbelievable 😂

Always disliked the hatches but I also just randomly came across a complete bone stock 89 hidden away here in Texas I will likely buy. Really crazy to think how things have changed in terms of cost and availability of clean stock examples.

I don't understand the allure of these cars. Must be a generational thing. This is one step better than a Datsun.
They look cool. They're fun to work on. INSANE aftermarket support. They're lightweight. They're easy to swap. Their heritage runs deep. They dominated the OG drift scene in the early 90's. They dominated the professional drift scene in the early 2000's. Any fan of JDM cars remembers 100 legendary builds. In stock form they're junk, which gives them that lovable underdog charm. They have an endless parts interchange with RB-powered cars. I could go on but won't because I know you've got to be trolling.
@@RearWheelZeal Not trolling at all. I knew several people that owned these cars back in the 90s. You said it yourself. These cars are pretty junky and nearly all of the were turned further into trash by misguided young people. I'm sure there are some nice examples out there somewhere but I swear every single one of them in the PNW is just hammered dog shit. I am not a JDM guy at all and never have been. Well except for that one time I had a mint non trashed Integra GSR. I will say that you have reminded me once again by mildly calling me out that I do need to be more positive about all aspects and kinds of automotive enthusiasts because many of todays youth don't give a crap about cars and before too long there's a good chance cool cars will die off and everyone will be forced to drive an appliance.
The crazy thing is someone would buy that shell and put on parts from a crashed car on it.

Dang makes me miss my hatch that was platinum blue metallic, feel so bad because it was such a clean car when I got it and then I did all the dumb drift things, threw black over fenders on the front, rolled the fenders and of course buckled the the quarter panel.

In 2002 I bought a s13 pig nose auto for 600 bucks ran and drove. Just alot rust must of had that tyranny plug disconnected Cause shifts were narly
I just sold mine for 4k and bought it for 6, put almost 4 into it. Don't buy an s chassis unless it's super clean and has very little issues, no rust, no frame damage, nothing. They are money pits just like the ae86.

Wont take much to make that look awesome. Pretty clean all things considered. Need to wack that fake nardi over the head of who ever put it in the car though.
Chelsea that diff is from a s13 with hicas, they came with abs sensor on diff snout. Also comes with VLSD.
And that's a s13 black top sr20det (has the ribs in front of timing cover.)
Its a redtop SR20det you can tell cause it doesnt have VTC

thats a vlsd diff cover. the drain is in the bottom and has cooling fins and a little more capacity. open diff cover has the drain the middle of the cover and makes a mess. driveshafts are specific to abs and non abs diffs
