At Christmas when Sainsbury's had 2 kilos of potatoes for 19 pence a bag, I bought 15 bags! I found all kinds of new uses for potatoes my favourite has got to be putting in fresh homemade bread 50/50 ratio flour potato! MUST try it 😊 reduce amount of water used
Very interesting about the potato that is good for chips/crisps. I tried several new varieties last year and will be going back to the good old boring , Red Pontiac, Yukon golds and Kennebec. My 81 year old dad is convinced that chitting means cutting the potato apart and letting it scab over, creating three or four plants from one potato. He was so mad at me for planting whole potatoes a few years ago. He said that's not how you were taught! LOL I experimented here last year with planting some "late" potatoes in the middle of April. They grew enormous, fantastically beautiful plants and not a single spud. So...going to stick with our good old "plant potatoes on St Pats day" wisdom here in the middle of the USA.
I never knew there was a golden wonder potato…my favourite crisps too…I would have tried them this year but already have my quota…Charlotte…super easy to grow…I did them in bags last year and just left them in a sheltered spot and was still unearthing them at Christmas…together with Maris Pipers my family will have plenty of spuds this year…thanks for another lovely vlog….xx
Quite a few years ago I heard there are over 250 varieties of potatoes, so lots to choose from for many of us. Here I'm hoping to get spuds into the ground around the end of March. Thanks for sharing your potato information with us. Happy gardening! Cheers!
I'm planting German butter balls. I planted a variety maybe 3 - 4 yrs ago, not knowing any better, I planted them upside down, thinking the chit was the start of roots. Hoping for much better luck this time, I'll be using grow bags.
I paused the video to go get my seed potatoes out of the hall closet. I thought that's where they belonged until planting, oops. Thank you for the information!
Your show is wonderful! Being down after your wedding, graduating, or a birth is normal. You have been motivated for so long that normal doesn’t feel like enough anymore.
very informative ,helpfull video ,straightforward, many thanks ,explained with a cheerfull smile too😂
The happiness and facts you share on your channel is why your channel is wonderful. I am inspired by your videos to grow healthy food. Thank you for proving and showing. You are an inspiration and show why the earth is so wonderful.
🥰 so kind, thank you
One more reason: She is incredibly good looking.
"Whats all this chitting about" haha, i didnt know what it meant about a week ago 😅 thanks for the informative video! ❤
one of my fav channels
Thank you so much for an awesome video... It's nice to see someone just do potatoes and not turn it into a modeling session... thank you... great information and love hearing about your varieties across the pond... in the USA and in the Midwest... thanks again.
I received 10 Sarpo Mira seed potatoes today & had egg boxes ready for them & for 2 varieties of shop ones I’ve been chitting. These will be my first ever potato or edible plantings along with dwarf pea seeds I’ve just sown 😊❤
Quite informative!
Fantastisch Good video Katrina the patatos kimen thans te vlog grootjes ✔️☕🌱🥔👍🌷🌞
Oh potatoes...I've never ever had success growing them :( But I'm delighted others do have good luck :)
exciting times
Being in New Zealand Im about to harvest our second earlies Moonlight. My first earlies were Lisette which are one of my all time favourites. I'm always interested to see what you are growing. We have had a lot of rain this summer so the veggies have been amazing.
I like the process of chitting as it one of the first jobs of the season and then it give me a nice feeling checking on them. Im growing Sharpe’s Express and Nadine this year. Never grown Nadine before, but the seed potatoes looked so good I had to give them ago. I could only get Pink Fir in 5kg year and that is too much for me.
I'm growing Valor in potato grow bags this year. I've just put them in the egg box for chitting although I'm slightly worried about the size of the seed potatoes. Last year I grew Swift and Orla and I could swear the seed potatoes for them were larger. Will just have to wait and see what happens! I remember Golden Wonder crisps but I don't think I've seen a packet in years.
I am growing baltic Rose, Huckleberry, gold, Yukon, gold potatoes great video thank you for sharing. I obviously have been doing chitting wrong the whole time.. and now I know thank you again love your channel
Lovely video 😊 we haven't been able to find any of our usual Pentland Javelin variety this year, so trying Charlotte for the first time 🤞
Ohhh! You’ll be converted 😉 Let me know how it goes 🥔
so glad your videos are back , you look really happy , im so pleased !
Thank you so much!!
Loved your video AND all of the helpful comments!
Hi Katrina Im growing Cara, Maris Piper and Picasso this year in 30L tubs I've grown Cara for years and they are a great variety for the tubs. I normally grow Sarpo Mira but couldn't get them, sold out ,normally for main crop you don't need to chit them. Steve
Hello lovely, always go by your advice, lovely programm as usual , thanku xx😊 🥔🥔🥔🥔🍠
Only have room for Charlotte variety this year, grown in tubs. I have a small garden to grow in, with only one half getting full sun 😔 but it’s my happy place and I fit as much as I can in! 😊😊
Great overview Katrina, what an opportunity that "Potato Day" is to try out different varieties, I'm sure it's full of friendly people with lots of great tips too !
We haven't grown any spuds for a few years now as we've had a lot of problems with blight and badgers digging them up, but miss the excitement of uncovering and harvesting the crop, perhaps well try again with pots like you. We always grew Charlotte & PFA which make the best wedges ever !
Good job you fixed that roof !
Ηi, the potato video is very interesting. Make and other small useful presentations for the new summer growing season.
Great video again Katrina its nice to see you back in full swing.
This year I'm chitting Red Duke of York and Jazzy, a second early. I'm also trying out a French new potato variety called Armandine . They were bought in Tesco for table consumption and tasted very good. A Google search indicates they're first early, so I pinched a few when the boss wasn't looking.
Thank you so much! This is very helpful
Tôi đã trồng 10 củ. Cảm ơn bạn nhiều
🐝Thanks for the great video 🌻
I always chit my spuds buy mine in end Jan or Feb depending when my local garden centre has them in
But there's the old age do or don't chit. As said I doits a job and start of the growing season
The other side farmers don't just plant and harvest so its a personal thing iv even in The past planted planted some in deep pots so you green stems and leaf then planted out bit it's more work but it was a test thing and doesn't make any difference. All the best john in leicester.😊
At some point it would be great if you explained how allotments work. As a homeowner in the US, it is something I'm not familiar with. How do you get one? What does it cost? Is there a limited supply? Can you have it only for a certain number of years? I see videos of Flawless Cleaning Services and it seems like a lot of people have at least small yards they could grow things in...apologies if you've already covered this
Jacques Pepin recommended Yukon Gold for homemade French Fries. Also is good for boiled/mashed potatoes.
Hi Katrina where is that potato show I live in Nottingham? very interesting thank you lv Irene 😘 xx
I live in Oregon , US . I seem to always miss my window of opportunity as to when to order seed potatoes. By January all the seed companies are sold out ! You are blessed to have the Organic Gardeners seed potato event each year . I wish we had something like that in our area . I’d love to find Charlotte seed potatoes but haven’t heard of them in the States .
They're sold out for this year but I get my Charlottes via mail order from Wood Prairie Farm
Thank you ! When do you usually order yours ?
@@bobbilynnmiller742 The minute they open ordering, I think this year it was back in early December
l'm not sure if chitting really beneficial but i always do it , because i love going to my allotment 😃
Golden wonder crisps are owned by Tayto group. They have an plant in Corby Northants
Ahh not far from my hometown! Interesting 😁
I actually write on the potato…helps when you drop them! I’m growing Charlotte, Jazzy and Picasso this year. I love Pink fir apple for fried potatoes but don’t have any room left!
That’s a great tip 😃 🖊️
List all your varieties, then number them - 1,2,3,4 etc then write the corresponding number on your spuds. Must save some time.
Love watching all your helpful videos. Thank you! Sue on Merseyside x
Wow your channel is amazing! Thank you for your wisdom on growing food. I was wondering, is it not possible to use shop bought potato’s and use them for chitting? I have some organic white potatoes and was wondering if I could use them. Many thanks 🙏
Hi Katrina I live in Gedling I wonder where the potato day is lv Irene 😘 xx
Not only do I have to protect my chitting potatoes from rodents but from my very greedy cat Brian! Best wishes from Wales
Fantastisch Good video katrian te patatos kimen thans te vlog Good weekend 🥔👍🌷☕️🌤
❤❤❤❤❤
Great video, how many potatoes/ tubs do you grow to keep your self sufficient all year? Thanks
What camera do you use for filming these videos? They seem very good quality , thanks
Thanks for a fantastic video and tutorial. I have some charlottes and pink fir apples chitting. I understand my spuds only need 3 or 4 good chits ready to plant, but my pink fir apples have lots of chits...Do I just remove the excess ones so I'm left with the best 3 or 4 chits on each spud like normal?
i live in nottingham and prolly not too far from your allotment. carlton hill. looks like i've missed the nottingham potato event. can you suggest another place to get different varieties locally? wanna get those potatoes in my pots soon.! thanks for your vids...
How will a frost affect potato plants? Will it straight up kill them? Thanks for the video and good luck with your garden.
Coming to a future video soon! But in short no it won’t kill it but do mulch the foliage if it’s above soil before a frost.
I never plant potatoes till May. Where do you plant yours please? In the ground or containers and if containers which ones?
Those long potatoes look a bit like artichoke, I've been tempted to grow them but apparently you have to be careful because they spread underground and can get out of control 😂 funny how potato varieties have their own personality
Hi Katrina! Do you have to use a seed potato to start with? My fiancé and I have just used ones from the grocery store the couple times we’ve tried growing them. 😂
Can i plant the Potato if they show some green colour on the potatoes?
where do you buy just a few each of all these potato varieties?
Have you ever visited the "Schreber Gartens" in Germany?
I’ve never been to Germany! Would love to.
How long to store main crop? First time growing potatoes this year. I have too mant main crop.... Hopefully they store well. Thank you ❤
Depends on the variety and storage method. Some store better than others! Good ones will store for 4-6 months
@@homegrowngarden Thank you so much for your reply ❤️
You may have to write down your goals and celebrate each one reached. All of them are “important”.
Why can't you save a couple of potatoes you grow for seed? I heard store bought potatoes are treated to prevent sprouts and shouldn't be used but if you grow your own, can they be stored properly to be used next year?
You can yes! I always forget and eat them 😝
Is that onions sets in trays behind you? If so why and when did you put them there? Just something I've never seen.
Those are shallot sets. You can see me plant them in my February update video🙂

@@homegrowngarden thanks very much, I'll give it a watch 👍
Do you plant your potatoes whole or cut them ?
Looking forward to seeing your crisp making video :)
🤞
